Touch And Go For Vea

August 11th, 2019

Possible timetable for return.

On Saturday in his first day-after presser as Bucs coach, Bucco Bruce Arians discussed defensive lineman Vita Vea’s injury for the first time since news broke that Vea won’t have surgery on a strained LCL

When news broke about this on Friday, it was also reported Vea could miss up to eight weeks in a worst-case scenario.

Asked about a timetable for Vea’s return, Arians was vague but seemed optimistic.

“Right now, it’s basically week-to-week,” Arians said. “Each guy heals differently for those things. It’s just a matter of pain tolerance and fitting the brace and seeing where he’s at.”

If Vea were to miss eight weeks, then he would be doubtful until the Week 4 game at Los Angeles on Sept. 29.

Joe thinks the Bucs really dodged a bullet with Vea’s injury.

Wonder if we’ll ever get a full season out of him.

  2. coach Says:

chuck you jimmy. did you watch the tape?

  3. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

Let’s not mince words: if vea misses the first month, we have a hell of a hole to dig ourselves out of. Can’t afford to start slow. Get healthy big guy.

  4. tmaxcon Says:

Vea will play less than 7 games all year….. write it down

  5. Pick6 Says:

2 winnable games at home, and 2 road games where the odds are stacked against us thanks to timing (Thursday night v panthers) and distance (west coast). 2-2 seems likely with or without the big man

  6. R.O. Says:

Guarenteed Vea Nor LVD54 play week one. The have to turn around and play Thursday night for game 2 . Earliest back is Game 2.

  7. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

My guess, both Vita and David will play the first week. It just a matter if they are in football shape to play the entire game.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Soon as I read this, Yogi Berra saying ‘Deja vu all over again’ came to mind. Been there, done that, don’t want to travel that road again. But it looks like we’ll have no choice.

Last year Vea missed the first 4 games … we won 2, lost 2. The 2 games we won were largely because our offense scored oodles of points (75 to be exact). Offense only committed 2 turnovers, while the Bucs’ defense generated 4 takeaways. A key to those first 2 games IMO was the positive TO margin AND holding opponents to under 100 yds rushing, which we did. Even came close to winning the Pittsburgh game, despite our offense making 4 turnovers, largely because we held the Steelers rushing game in check, allowing only 78 rushing yds.

Then came Chicago. Offense committed 3 turnovers while our defense had zero takeaways. Allowed Chicago to rush for 139 yds. Lost 48-10. Coincidence? I think not. THAT’S where a DT like Vea could’ve helped the most. But interestingly, even though Vea returned in Game 5 the Bucs rushing defense stayed pretty much abysmal for the rest of the season.

My HOPE this year was that our tandem of Vea & Suh … backed by Devin White … would be able to dramatically improve the middle of our defense, especially our run defense. Well, for a spell we’ll have to see if the 2 shiny new toys in the middle can do the job without Vea.

Beau Allen … next man up. And oh ya, Bucs offense … the pressure’s even more on you. Start fast, limit the turnovers, control the clock, score oodles of points. IOW, do your job.

  9. Magadude Says:

If there were a bright spot to this other than his injury is not as severe as it may have been, is he did get his offseaon and OTA work in, plus almost two weeks of camp. If memory serves me well, last year as a rookie he was injured almost immediately, and it was more severe, so time to get back in shape was likely longer. I’d still be suprised if we see him on the field before the timeframe Joe mentions…and I’d love to see the Bucs 2-2 then. They may be lucky to be 1-3 at that point, sad to say.

  10. Todd Says:

Even if healthy, all injured players should NOT play week one. Save them for the Panthers game.

  11. Bird Says:

No one knows what type of LCL sprain – whether 1/2/3rd degree

A lot of general articles I read had 6 weeks for lcl to heal / strengthen properly
But at that point , he wouldn’t be in football shape and throwing a guy back into the fire without getting body up to speed is just asking for another injury.

Arians wants to win now but he be smart about it and take time with Vea
Moving forward , Vea should get the Joey Galloway treatment.
Let him manhandle dudes only on Sundays

  12. Jeff Says:

More like week 8. Vea is a slow healer.

  13. DooshLaRue Says:

    @DR

    Words of wisdom sir.
Fingers crossed and Bucs jersey on!

  14. Pete Mitchell Says:

Somewhere Warren Sapp has a little bit of an “I told you so” grin.

Also… if Sean Murphy Bunting is not an NFL player than Jason Licht needs to be fired.

These message boards were damn near on fire when he made that pick because everyone and their mother knew he got it wrong.

  15. isrBuc Says:

    What’s up with edwards?

  16. #1bucsfan Says:

@R.O good point that week will be a short week.

  17. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

    “What’s up with Edwards?”

Edwards and Dean, the “two magic beans,” will go directly to the practice squad, they did not pass go, and they did not collect $200.

  18. OneBuc55 Says:

It’s a long season, no need to rush him or Lavonte back, like Defense said our offense is gonna need to be sharp from the get go…Barring any significant injuries, the offense should be Top 5; Top 10 at worst…

Our defense on the other hand has been pretty bad for a while now, if Todd can get them to go from bad to let’s just say “above average” that could be the difference between winning 8 or 9 games instead of only 5…

If the defense turns out to be really good or even dominant we’ll definitely be in the playoffs with 10+ wins…But in order for that to happen we need a healthy Vita and Lavonte…So let’s all pray to the football God’s that we get these two back asap…

  19. BucEmUp Says:

I think Suh Suh will accept this challenge to puck up veas slack and we all.know he is more than capable, we also know that arians is the only coach he has ever played for with the balls to chew his ass out for loafing or taking plays off. Im not.that concerned. We need David ready to roll week 1 and we need our corners to play lock down man coverage. We need leftwhich to call a good.offensive game and not get conservative. George kittle and tevin coleman are.going to be main weapons and goodwin will burn any corner in the league. Gonna be a tough match but I feel.good about any game they play with a kicker who can nail a 70 yarder to win the game

So many negative, immature idiots post on this site. It’s really disgusting that this world has so many negative people in it.

Kinda taking a negative view of the site and world, huh Ndog?

  22. NOSBOS Says:

😊,d@#$ you folks go for anything. Let me give you all some game. BA is beloved by current and former players because he looks out for and protects his guys. Vea is in my opinion the most important piece to the entire defense. BA knows Vea will absorb more physical contact than any other player on this team this upcoming season. That’s why guys like him LVD and JPP are being sat down. The latter two are vets man, vets really don’t like doing this camp thing. They prefer working on they’re own and being ready for the season. When the season kicks off.

  23. I hate soft players Says:

Good headline Joe… Touch and go for Vea. If you touch him during camp he goes down until November.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Whatever comes, I’m not going to stress over it. I’m through all the rises in blood pressure over this team.

Still bleed red and crap pewter, but changing the way I handle adversity. I’m going to look for positives all season to the point where it will drive haters and trolls crazy. Not just regarding the team, but also other people.

  25. tmaxcon Says:

no NDOG what’s disgusting is the on field product the bucs have fielded for the better part of 42 years…. outside of sapp and grudens glory year the actual results are what is disgusting

  26. Jmarkbuc Says:

All you need to gauge Vita’s return

    Is a thermometer

  27. Oregonbucsfan Says:

Ndog, it must be nice to be positive and very mature in all your posts. With such a gap between you “so many” dopes on this site maybe you should apply for a job with the Bucs. Be sure to include in your resume terms like “homer”, “opinionated”, and “disgusted”. Good luck.

  28. Cobraboy Says:

    @Ghost: you are an idiot.

You think either of Edwards or Dean would clear waivers?

Go back to fapping about Henderson. That takes no brains. Just a hand.

  29. ChipBuc Says:

Ndog as hard as it is, don’t take the bait. Somebody like you who is a true fan and wants to see the team do well, just has to resist the trolling that goes on on this board. Jesus Christ himself could play for this team and the same yahoo’s would find something wrong with his game. Trying to convince these same trolling posters of anything is impossible. Just realize you are not alone in your optimism for this team this year. Go Bucs

  30. runnerdoc Says:

The scary, but true, thought is most of these dudes arent’t trolling. It’s how their thought processes work.

Vita Vea could be out 2 weeks. He could be out 2 months. No one here has the information to narrow it down (his doctors/therapist don’t know currently, either, though they have a better idea). Ditto David (without any information, I’m more concerned about David, actually).

    Go Bucs

Jmark gets it. When the temp drops to 70 degrees and 0 humidity VV will be absolutely unstoppable. So late January or so

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

LMAO here. Touch and go aye? Meaning…He will miss all of training camp just like last yr. He will come back with an extra 10 to 20 pds on his frame. And he will need 3 or 4 games to get in shape. Further meaning..he will flash here and there with no consistency. Further concluding..about an 8 or 9 game season for him..Showing that..bright promise for the next season. My poor snakebit Bucs. BucLife baby.

  33. Buccernutter Says:

    Na we dodged a meteor.

  34. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Drafted the wrong guy… Derwin james Jr should be a Buc!
