“They Ate Their Lunch”

August 26th, 2019

Rattled on Friday, analyst says.

Brian Baldinger sounded like he wanted to throw up.

The NFL Network and FOX Sports analyst teed off on the Bucs offensive line nearly as bad as the Browns did. Baldinger had choice words for the shameful display of no blocking Friday night.

A former NFL offensive lineman himself, Baldinger said America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, was beaten up like he’s rarely ever seen. All thanks, in Baldinger’s eyes, to the offensive line.

Some folks think Jameis had a bad game, and Baldinger didn’t disagree. But Baldinger put the full blame on the offensive line saying Jameis was so rattled from the pounding he took, no quarterback could be expected to hit open receivers.

Joe likes Baldinger and has often cited his work on this here corner of the interwebs. But Joe has never heard Baldinger take apart a position group like Baldinger did the Bucs offensive line.

You can hear in his voice how he felt sorry for Jameis.

Remember guys the issue is attitude, not talent.

  2. Todd Says:

    Sad but true.

Licht needs to get off his ass and get creative. Trade Brate for a seasoned OL, perhaps. Say buh-bye to JPP, perhaps. I don’t know…anything. But to stand pat on our current OL is irresponsible at this point. Stating the obvious.

  3. miken Says:

We have a very expensive O line… I know its preseason, but that unacceptable.

  4. Hodad Says:

Way to tell it like it was Baldy. Give the O line credit for something. They might not have been quick to block, but they were quick to help Jameis up after he got knocked down. Lifting all those weights paid off!

  5. TB22 Says:

Winston will be beaten to a pulp with this putrid OL

Andrew Luck endured many years behind a crappy OL until the colts finally addressed OL in a huge way in the 2018 NFL draft.

But it was too late for Luck and it will be too late for Winston.
He is going to take major abuse this year. Feel bad for the guy.

Licht is a moron for ignoring the OL and the Bucs owners deserve what they get for extending this joke another 5 years.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Bucsfaninchina … Sorry, but the issue with the Bucs’ OLine IS talent. Granted, the Cleveland defense is VERY good, but there’s still no excuse for what we all saw on Friday night. Letting your QB get pummeled is simply unacceptable, and should be cause for either being demoted or released.

Let’s face it, our OLine is VERY highly paid but average to below average. Four of the 5 starting OLinemen were drafted by the Bucs … 3 by Licht & 1 by Dom. All but 1 (Marpet) are mediocre at their position. The 5th starting OLineman, Center Ryan Jensen, is grossly overpaid for what he’s shown on the field. Our depth is non-existent (except possibly Bailey who the jury is still out on). For a team like the Bucs that loaded up with receiving ‘weapons’ this OLine is unacceptable.

:icht needs to get his butt in gear and grab at least 2 OLinemen with starting potential. Don’t care whether it’s via a trade or signing a FA after cutdowns. Just git ‘er done.

  7. Joe Says:

Licht is a moron for ignoring the OL

Didn’t ignore the OL. Who was selected another story.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Oh and Joe, you REALLY need to find some new photos of Jameis. That particular picture makes Jameis look like is getting ready to cry. And maybe he was, but he won’t say it or show it. Cut him some slack.

  9. Joe Says:

That particular picture makes Jameis look like is getting ready to cry.

Which is exactly why Joe chose that photo. You think a picture of smiling Jameis fit this story??

  10. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

Gump’s claim to fame is his comprehensive knowledge of the offensive line and Division 3 athletes.

    God help us.

I wonder if the Joes can find out the exact day of Gump’s signing so we can have a countdown clock.

How about the QB calling an audible???

  13. DooshLaRue Says:

    @DR

I’m pretty sure Joe has a bank of photos that he uses to capture the mood of the articles he writes.
The above photo was probably chosen because the story is about JW getting killed due to a crappy OL …… hence the “verge of tears” pic.

  14. Joe Says:

How about the QB calling an audible???

What audible is going to stop non-blocking?

  15. Todd Says:

Joe, do you think Licht reads JBF?

    I sure hope he does.

  16. Destinjohnny Says:

    Worst gm in football

  17. FortMyersDave Says:

Baldingers right. Five sacks in a half to a Cleveland team that probably is okay on defense but by no means are the ’85 Bears or 1999/2002 Bucs on that side of the ball. It is amazing that JW did not get injured behind that sieve of a line. The OL got done about as bad as anyone since Ned Beatty ran into those University of Tennessee alumni when he took that canoe trip with Jon Voight and the late Burt Reynolds. Last year it was Mikey Smith mailing it in with the D and this season its an OL that looks like its only here to cash pay checks much like Smitty. Disgusting!

  21. Bradentonbuc Says:

andrew Luck is retiring due to injuries/exhaustion and one of his early O-Line coaches is here…

  22. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

How about hitting the open receiver in the flat? Or calling an audible? Or (here’s a novel idea)….ADJUSTING?

  23. Marine Buc Says:

You think this line sucks now? Wait until we have a few injuries… OMG is that going to be UGLY.

  24. Joe Says:

How about hitting the open receiver in the flat? Or calling an audible? Or (here’s a novel idea)….ADJUSTING?

Again, what audible is going to prevent non-blocking? Call an audible to throw the ball into the ground the moment the ball is snapped?

  25. Joe Says:

You think this line sucks now? Wait until we have a few injuries… OMG is that going to be UGLY.

    You ain’t wrong. 🙁

  26. tnew Says:

Sick of hearing “I don’t want to hear about the O-LIne” The last first round offensive lineman picked by the Bucs was 13 years ago (Cosey Coleman, 2006) Talking heads were whining about how the Colts only used two since 2011. Not taking Tunsil when he pulled a Warren Sapp and dropped out of the top 5 was a bonehead mistake. The big shame is the amount of money that has been invested in this group.

Leaving Winston in a preseason game for that was not smart. Gabbert proved that. Losing a preseason game is OK. Losing the starting QB in a preseason game is a disaster.

  27. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

LOL! Joe your comments are pure gold today!

The sad thing is (for the Bucs), I agree with them.

  28. Rayjay1122 Says:

The garbage men. No offense to the hard working folks in waste management.

  29. Dapostman Says:

You can tell which posters have Winston Derangement Syndrome. The article is on bad OL play and a few are blaming the QB. lol. You can’t make this stuff up. I used to think these poor soles wandered around talking to themselves waiting for a Winston article so they can get to their keyboards and post, see I told you Winston sucks! Now they post on any article. Do people live under the Skyway Bridge?

  30. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Yet the bucs sign the GM to an extension and thinks he can evaluate talent, the OL is the highest paid and worst performing in the NFL. YOu have a #1 overall pick being protected by a D3 player, what is bosa or dee ford gonna do to this inept OL…and isnt the OL coach the same one responsible for the crappy colts OL that got Luck knocked out

  31. diggler Says:

I understand the negativity BUT these are acceptable negatives.

    The positives outweigh the negatives.

    1. Jameis has 0 ZERO turnovers. The almost pick was a forced throw to that #10 kid to get him going. JW wouldn’t try that throw in a regular season game BA won’t have it!

    2. Held Mayfield to field goals if not for Suh’s penalty results would have been even better for the defense. What people need to remember is yes Mayfield was off but most of the time he was off due to corner route disruption and disguise. The secondary will keep bucs in the game against that QB in New Orleans.

    3. Secondary has playmakers! Whitehead for president. He better start game 1 he’s going to be special.

    4. Hard to run on the defense.

    5. The oline isn’t THAT bad, Brown’s blitzed non-stop but if a regular season game BA would have made them pay for that. BA knows how to exploit stupid defensive game plans. Brown defense will suck this year playing like that. The players are good but that game plan is just dumb.

    6. We know who are starting RB will be and it will be Barber, Barber can pass protect but Rojo isn’t terrible at it.

    7. Spence will be a very good pass rush specialist. Want to see him mostly on 3rd downs as a DE/LB. Was cool to see him not put a hand down. He looked a little awkward but once he settles in he will be a nice wrinkle to this defense. Blitz White and have Spence tee off or visa versa will cause some fun confusion for that QB in new orleans.

    8. Suh still got it.

    9. RG4 is a nice backup and/or trade chip.

    10. Gay is the real deal. Joe jinx has been broken! We have a kicker!!!

  32. Isaac haggins Says:

I have said it time and time again said it since Winston was drafted and the comparison I have used to drive the point home is the Colts !!! They didn’t protect Luck until last year and the results have been obvious and Licht has done the same . The highest paid center in the league is at best a top 25 center and Licht ran around for months like a lil child saying he can’t wait to beat people up with his center and d line signings , What a Joke !!! Licht number one job when you draft a qb number one is to protect the dam Qb . He has done anything but , at this time their is no Bucs lineman that is better than avg and many below avg .

  33. Bucamania Says:

Granted there was little blocking on that play but JW sees the blitzer coming and TURNS RIGHT INTO HIM!!! Cmon man.

  34. tmaxcon Says:

Please tell me you are joking because if you truly believe there are more positives than negatives when it comes to this minor league franchise you are in need of serious help immediately

  35. BigHog Says:

I been trying to tell ya! There is nothing tuff about this O/Line! Run FAMOUS Run and when the season is over due by resign here without some guarantees about better protection up front!!

  36. BigPoppaBuc Says:

That was one terrible outing. This group had had very limited snaps, then sent out for the “dress rehearsal” against what is probably the best defensive front in football. The result was embarrassing. Now…. Let’s see how they respond. They’ve got to chew on this for two weeks. Let’s see if these guys take it personally the way o linemen should and step up their game.

  37. BucsBandit Says:

Our O-Line from last season was ranked ABOVE AVERAGE (15th) in Pass Protection, yielding sacks in only 6.6% of plays. That’s 93.4% of plays don’t give up a sack.

The Browns have one of the most talented D-Lines in the league, that’s why the added pressure in that game.

    BUT…

Stop making more excuses for Jameis WInston. On plays he wasn’t under tons of pressure he still struggled at times.

  39. jerseybuc Says:

It is up to the coaching staff to make the best of this situation.

That would seem to me to rely more on the tight ends, RBs and short passing game to slow down the rush. For the last few years we have relied on the deep ball, and BA’s no risk it no biscuit doesn’t seem to jive with an OL that is so below average. If we keep doing the same thing that is the definition of insanity. We need to play to the strengths, and in this case, the weaknesses of our team. Still ticks me off that we never moved Donovan to the right side, he simply can’t play to the whistle at LT and is just not suited to that spot. Dotson is on his last legs, our center is overrated and Cappa??? I think we grab an OL from the waiver wire next week and he plays a bigger part in this season than we know.

  40. T REX Says:

You can’t change the whole offense in a week.

6-10 is the max this team can do.

    3-13 is probably the bottom.

  41. Cgmaster27 Says:

Shocker, you can show the line being completley whipped in a second flat and clowns like pittshore try to pin it on Jameis. You’re truly a trolling loser pittshore. Everyone from coaches to analysts could see our line sucked ass, but nah, you only focus on the qb getting killed behind that swiss cheese line.

  42. Cgmaster27 Says:

@bucsbandit what exactly does last years line numbers have to do with this game? Please do tell how that matters? You’re reaching for any excuse to blame Jameis and it’s kind of pathetic, as is most of your responses. Did you not watch the video above? Some of you have a rousing amount of Jameis derangement syndrom.

  43. webster Says:

    Bucsbandit

What about baldy saying when any qb is under this type of duress, he will struggle to complete passes because the offensive rhythm is off. Its not an excuse its FACT. Again, another dumb buc fan who expects winston to do things no other qb has ever done. Jameis win with the worst defense, oline, run game and special team eventhough no other qb has…no big deal. Jameis stand in there and throw darts eventhough manning, brady, etc hall have struggled when they were constantly harassed. No big deal jameis. This idiot fan base expects you to do it. You know its funny….every year there is a team/qb that performs at an extremely high level offensively and then there is one game where an opponent eats that team’s lunch. Then the football savants/gurus/fans have this great epiphany……ah…thats how you slow this offense down. You have to get to the qb. Newsflash for idiots like bucbandit…..any time a qb is hit early and often, the offense will not perform well NO MATTER WH THE QB IS. Thats only been true for 100 years of football.

    Tnew

I believe you mean davin joseph.

  44. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Joe says “Again, what audible is going to prevent non-blocking?” Gee, you’ve NEVER seen an NFL QB audible a blocking scheme? Never seen a Brees, or Brady or Ryan audible and point to defenders to shore up blocking? That is being completely disingenuous, Joe.

  45. Slugglife Says:

Vinny better have his legs stretched out because he’s gonna have to run quite a bit this week.

Hopefully, the amount of shame the o line should feel lights a fire under their collective asses.

  46. Slugglife Says:

Or just a simple screen play.

  47. Brandon Says:

    ————–

Next thing you know people will suggest someone can audible into play that doesn’t take so long to develop and gets the ball out quicker or even takes advantage of teams providing fierce pass rush. But apparently flares dump offs, hot routes, and slants don’t exist to get the ball out quicker and RB and WR screens and smoke screens don’t exist to take advantage of hard charging pass rushes.

  49. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Jameis hasn’t hit the deep ball consistently since coming here even when he has time

Let’s be real he’s done little to deserve a second contract

  50. Jim Says:

Uh, any line that is in the future tense, as in “he will” cannot be a “fact”. Please…

  51. BrianBucs Says:

Hey Byron Leftwich , where were the screens and quick slants?

  52. Dapostman Says:

    @Bucsbandit,

how many times did the mobile QB duo of Fitz and Winston run to avoid the sack? I know they ran a bunch. This line is below average, see the run game stats.

  53. Bucsfanman Says:

If this is what we can expect from this o-line all year, Leftwich better start calling some quick-hitter pass plays. Is this franchise allergic to slants and screens, or what?!!!
And, OMG, they had better have a contingency plan for Dotson.

  54. Licht Headed Says:

    Over/under on 2019 Bucs wins: 4 1/2

  55. Defense Rules Says:

If I were BA, I’d be asking some awfully tough questions right about now … about the Bucs’ OFFENSE. The word ACCOUNTABILITY is really neat, but it doesn’t mean diddly UNLESS players (and coaches) REALLY are held ACCOUNTABLE. However, without any depth on the OLine, none of those 5 starters is probably the slightest bit concerned about being demoted or released. THAT’S a travesty. And it’ll bite us in the butt before this season is very far along.

This OLine got their butts whipped Friday night. They know that Jameis is their bread-and-butter, and yet they couldn’t protect him. Are they not big enough? Not strong enough? Not smart enough? Not coached well enough? Not motivated enough? What went wrong?

Against strong defenses (and Cleveland is a very talented defense) the Bucs have been woefully deficient over these past several years (I’m trying to be generous). That Jason Licht got a 5-year extension for building a team like this is beyond ludicrous. BUT … I assume that he’s riding BA’s coattails so I guess it should’ve been anticipated. The question going forward is clear … “How you gonna FIX THIS MESS Jason?” Better get busy. And fast … the clock is ticking.

  56. JimmyJack Says:

I do think there is some adjusting that could have been done in that game. A few designed rollouts can take you away from the pressure. A few more screens could take advantage of the pressure and a few more quick outs or flat routes can alleviate the pressure.

Didn’t see much of that and too many play designs seemed to be too long developing and played right into the Browns hands. TBH it kinda looked like Dirk Koetter calling the offense all over again. Except for some strange reason we didn’t see the trademark turnovers to go along with in(maybe Bruce’s whispering is paying off?).

I will chalk that up to basic playcalling and a limited playbook. But if I see a gameplan like that in a real game I will not be a happy camper. We might run into some tough games similar to that one this season and often times you will see well coached and well prepared teams make nice adjustments and start to find that rhythm in the second half. Kinda intruiged to how we would come out after the half and what we would have done differently if that was a real game.

I’m sure we’ll find out sometime throughout the season.

    GO BUCS!!!

  57. Jmarkbuc Says:

    DR

Excellent post, and right on point…as I said yesterday, BA sounding more and more like BS….

Licht getting an extension is a nightmare that we just can’t wake up from.

  58. firethecannons Says:

Good story glad Baldy made it clear. Yet BA chose to completely ignore, play it down , said the offensive line was strong just Cappa and Dotson got beat honestly Bucs are in trouble and Jameis will be made to pay.

  59. firethecannons Says:

so glad this happened–so obvious–now their will be no excuse when game after game we lose and Jameis is done for the year by game 3.

  60. Bucsdelight Says:

That first clip of the video is Jameis’ fault. He turned right in to the guy being blocked. You never turn your back to the Defense and he did. The RB picked up the blitz, but Jameis for some reason spun around right back into the block. If he would have either stepped up or went the other way, he would have been fine. It’s the small stuff.

  61. firethecannons Says:

Byron Leftwich should of realized this was a stupid game for Jameis to be throwing the long ball and long developing plays, he needed to get the ball out fast with quik screens to RB etc
wonder what jason licht was thinking as he watched this–damn that dude is really the one responsible, not one draft pik for the o-line shame!

  62. Cobraboy Says:

I am actually glad the OL was poor vs. a good defensive front…in pre-season.

Better know now that after Game 1.

Now the OL gets chewed with higher demands of performance.

    This is a good thing.

I coached for a guy who *wanted* some poor plays in scrimmages specifically to chew on players about getting better. Not saying this is the case, but this is only pre-season.

Hard for knowledgeable fans to read too much into it.

Cappa seems to be a problem. This may be the first time he faced a solid DL not on his team. Now he KNOWS…and his but will feel the butt-chewing…what can happen, and what he has to do ion the future.

I do not believe the sky is falling, and I do believe the team will pick up at least two veteran OL who get released next week.

  63. unbelievable Says:

Good lord our o-line is pathetic!!!

  64. Buccaneerscotty Says:

You have to have a starting quarterback to loose one!

  65. Rod Munch Says:

You had idiots on Friday literally blaming Jameis. There’s a lot of truly stupid people around here.

  66. Mike Johnson Says:

Baldy is 1000% correct. Arians says it was not that bad? Guess he’s our new..Spinmaster huh? Buc fans that’s how a pass rush is supposed to look. Jameis took mega hits. Brown D line plays like that and I guarantee everybody they will turn around. I got so excited it made me think of the days when We..actually had that kind of Pass Rush. That’s how its done Buc fans.

  67. Cobraboy Says:

@Rod Munch: BA blamed Winston on 2, maybe 3 of the sacks.
