Preparing For Liftoff

August 15th, 2019

Big season expected. Chris Godwin speaks on national TV.

There are a lot of reasons to be geeked about a new Bucs football season. For Joe, one is Chris Godwin.

The third-year receiver is now a full-time starter. And in Bruce Arians’ offense, Godwin is manning a position once played by Hines Ward and Larry Fitzgerald.

In other words, Godwin is being set up to blow up. And this isn’t lost on Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

Godwin is set to be Evans’ every-down running-mate. For a player with impeccable route-running, vice-grip hands, and plus athleticism, the third-year pro should make every list of potential blow-up candidates.

Joining NFL Network’s Good Morning Football Thursday, Godwin sounded like 1,000 yards this season was almost a given.

“I’m excited about this season,” he said. “I’m excited about what the season could bring for myself. I’m excited about what the season could bring for the team. I feel like, if I go and do what I need to do, obviously as a receiver I feel like our goals could be over 1,000 yards. I feel like I could have been there last year.

“So, me just trying to get to that point, I think that me doing that will really help our team. I’m coming in every day just trying to work, trying to be the best receiver I can be. I know I have a lot of room to grow, but I think that’s the exciting thing. From what I’ve done so far I can still grow so much higher.”

The thing Joe loves about Godwin is there’s no diva in him like you find in so many receivers. You can say the same thing about Mike Evans.

Shoot, in Godwin’s interview below with “Good Morning Football,” seen on NFL Network, Godwin doesn’t even think he is a starter.

    mike evans- 1600 yards 12TD’s

    godwin- 1150 yards 7TD’s

BUCS- 10-6 with a playoff berth!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

I agree with the 10-6 record, but I also regret we lost more than we should have in the second half of the season because WE’RE OPENING 6-0 BABY!!!

  4. Steven007 Says:

813, from your mouth to Dog’s ears!

  5. tmaxcon Says:

reality check for the delusional optimists…. the more realistic prediction is 6-10 and a ton of excuses why this high school defense blew lead after lead that America’s quarterback handed them. BA bails by week 7 and Bowels get’s run out of town end of year for not being able to turn a high school roster into a nfl defense. glazers are happy they get to add another basement title to their collection…. that bucfan is the most likely outcome for this season. you know it down deep so just accept it!

  6. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    Agree.

  7. NOSBOS Says:

#2s always blow up under BA. I’ve stated a number of times Michael Floyd,Jon Brown,Santonio Holmes and Antonio Brown all blew up under BA as #2s in BA’s system. Nothing new under this sun.

  8. Buccaroo Says:

Enjoy him while we can because after this season he’ll probably be demanding more coin but only if there is any left after we give Jameis his record 40 mil $ contract. Some really hard financial choices are going to have to be made next season, especially if they play very well.

  9. JGhoti86 Says:

Agree with everything you said here Joe!

Better lock him up soon or he could potentially garner #1 WR money if he continues on the trajectory he’s on and becomes what we all think he will.

These are the kinda guys you hate to lose. I love that we have one of the best #1 and potentially #2 WR’s and there is no diva with any of them. Something to be positive about with the Bucs and we are very fortunate to have both.

I live our top two receivers. Everything about them.

  10. DooshLaRue Says:

I love what CG12 brings to our team.
I just hope JW doesn’t get him killed over the middle.

  11. Alanbucsfan Says:

    TMax-
Be careful with those recreational drugs and alcohol if Bucs have a winning season

  12. tmaxcon Says:

    Alanbucsfan

your definition of a winning season and mine are most likely different. just being 8-8 or 9-7 without a PLAYOFF WIN is not successful to me. if you are one n done in the playoffs dungy style then you have failed…. simple as that… moderation is key to happiness with any substance sir….

  13. OBP Says:

If Godwin really is taking on the Larry Fitz role in this offense then given his ability he’s flashed the past 2 years it’s reasonable to expect him to get 100 catches and 1000 yards, dude is about to light the league ablaze.

  14. buc15 Says:

I am optimistic this season as long as we can stay healthy. We have enough talent to be dangerous but we lack depth so keeping guys from the injury bug is key

  15. Rod Munch Says:

I’ll add my predictions for the offense, always a fun exercise that basically never works out.

    Winston, 4700 yards, 34 TDs, 14 INTs

    Evans, 84 rec, 1340 yards, 10 TDs
    Godwin, 86 rec, 1160 yards, 6 TDs
    OJ, 65 rec, 840 yards, 8 TDs
    Brate, 35 rec, 350 yards, 6 TDs
    Perriman, 24 rec, 340 yards, 1 TD
    Watson, 22 rec, 280 yards, 2 TDs

RB situation I have no idea, but I’ll go with the following, very low confidence…

    Barber, 680 yards, 5 TDs, 14 rec, 100 yards, 1 TD
    Jones, 780 yards, 4 TDs, 11 rec, 70 yards, 1 TD
    Ellington, 210 yards, 1 TD, 30 rec, 220 yards

I tried to balance out the numbers to make them reasonable. The only question I have here is who is the underneath blanket, the role that Hump played. I put Ellington into that role, but I also think Bobo, if he makes the team, would be a good fit there.

In the running game those numbers above are slightly better than what we did last year.

Overall this offense would probably be around 10th. Last years the Bucs QB’s combined for 36 passing TDs. Meanwhile that Bucs defense was historically bad and yet only gave up 34 passing TDs, that’s how good the offense was last year. Just people are morons and think having the #1 passing game is why we lost, not having the #32 defense.

    todd

i’ll take it anyway i can get it!!!!…lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  17. 813bucboi Says:

    rod

    love those winston predictions….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  18. DooshLaRue Says:

    @Munch

Any prediction on JW’s fumble numbers?

  19. Ptwalk Says:

@ Rod Munch, Barber had 871 yard last yr so you’re saying everybody’s numbers will be better except his. Y’all sleeping on Barber.

  20. BucEmUp Says:

Ive been saying for two years that Godwin looks like an Antonio Brown clone without the mental issues. Bucs wont be able to keep him in Tampa

  21. Chip Chipperson Says:

Love reading how the regulars are ignoring the “troll’s bait”. Sitting alone in your Mom’s basement is no way to live…we know it’s you Tom Jones! You’re not fooling anyone with your “the sheep will know…” crap.

  22. Billy_45 Says:

Yeah I’m not buying those rushing numbers at all.
10 rushing TDs all season LMAO

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

The key for the Bucs is staying healthy. If the team is blessed with the gift of good health, the sky’s the limit. I believe the coaching staff if right and stick with them as long as it takes. The Glazers will not find any better in the NFL. I’m expecting big things from the Bucs. So much of it is mental and players believing in themselves and their teammates. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that this team can go all the way to the Top.
    Go Bucs!!!
