Fighting For Five Spots

August 29th, 2019

Decisions.

It’s down to five.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht made his annual appearance on the fourth preseason game Bucs broadcast to talk pending roster moves on WFLA-TV.

Specifically, Licht was asked about position battles. Licht said there were about five spots up for grabs that could be determined by how specific guys played tonight in Dallas. He did not mention who they were or what positions they played.

When pressed, Licht noted there really aren’t any position battles as in, if Receiver-Y can beat out Receiver-Z for the final receiver roster spot. Rather, Light said it is down to how many players they keep at specific positions — such as will the Bucs keep five receivers or six, will the Bucs keep three running backs or four or will the Bucs keep five cornerbacks or six?

Licht did say a good chunk of the 90-player roster will be chopped off tomorrow (Friday) and the tougher decisions on bubble players will be made Saturday.

Licht admitted it is the worst weekend of the year for him as he knows he will be killing the boyhood dreams of many guys he releases.

Teams must trim their rosters to 53 by 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Did Justin Evans even play? I forgot to pay attention to the backend at the beginning of the game, but I’m not seeing that he tracked any stats.

  3. RustyRhinos Says:

Good training for winning the regular season Rod.

I’m happy we beat the Cowboys

    need to cut him

  6. Rod Munch Says:

    Testaverde passed for 41 yards…

    Reverse that and it’s 14…

Wow, brings a tear to my eye.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Cichy or Bond or both make it?
5 WRs……Evans, Godwin, Perriman, Watson, Bobo (Miller & Schnell to PS)

  8. DB55 Says:

The nfl should let the Bucs play with 106 men on their roster. 2 at each position.

  9. NOSBOS Says:

I bet trey dingo ain’t laughing at our 5th round selection of a kicker now. All hail Matt Gay. He’ll be recognized as the best in the league after this season.

  10. OBP Says:

Anthony Johnson and Bruce Anderson should both be PS picks imo, maybe even Mazzi Wilkins and Spencer Schnell. Tanner Hudson clearly made the main 53.

  11. Rod Munch Says:

Tampabaybucfan – I don’t see how Cichy makes the team based on all the tackles he missed tonight. Yeah, he had a really nice sack, but you missed, what, 5 tackles or something? He should be a PS guy, might still just be a bit rusty. Bond is a sure thing, plays inside or outside, solid depth guy and plays special teams.

For WR, Miller didn’t do anything that would make me think he should make the team or another team would sign him to their team, he should be a PS guy. Schnell as well. But they also have 81 Johnson who looks like an NFL WR, he’s a big guy like they like, but I don’t know if they’re going to keep three WRs on the PS.

i think Noah Spence hasn’t earned a roster spot.

    IMHO

No on Cichy, bad juju with his injuries. He ended his season on his first play last year. He looked a little sketchy on that leg on that fumble recovery.

VHIII will prolly make it through a game or 2. Hang on to R. Smith for a minute.

  14. Jmarkbuc Says:

    But WTFDIK

  15. TampaTown Says:

    @BucDan:
I heard on the pregame show that the Bucs decided to not play Justin Evans and risk a set back. So no, he did not play.

  16. BucBeliever Says:

I think Bobo probably beat out Watson (drops) and Miller (injury/playtime)
especially since he fielded so many punts. Not sure if Spence will make it with all his penalties, who Arians said would hurt players who failed to correct. Also not super flashy compared to Barrett but may stick for depth. Still think we bring in a player for RG after cuts as Cappa got blown up on a real pass rush. Gay makes it and Cairo gets signed by Bears. Safety seems an issue again as far as draft picks so I think Edwards stays and maybe replaces Evans since he’s from old regimen unless he goes back on IR. With JPP on schedule it looks like we won’t be putting his 7.5mil to use either.

  17. Bob in Valrico Says:

I wonder if Schnell special teams effort will hurt him. I have never seen a kick returner slide like a quarterback to avoid a hit. I also thought he called for
unnecessary fair catches in previous outings.

    Thanks for the follow up

    Bucbeliever,

Have you noticed the number of linemen who have been traded in the last 24 48 hours? The market isn’t getting any bigger the longer this week goes.
if licht is waiting for the last hour …He’s not going to find much if anything.

Linemen are going faster than I phones on Thanksgiving day.

  20. D1 Says:

But there’s always a good deal on d3 players. The flip phones of free agency.

    D1:

First hillarious response! Secondly, yes I’m surprised about the amount of last minute trades, especially for multiple picks, as opposed to waiting for waiver wire bait. I’m not saying we’ll get a premium player but they still might bring in a depth piece with experience. But there always seems to be that shocking player that’s let go too so anything is possible.
