Jameis speaks

An update on the right guard competition has been provided.

And it comes courtesy of Bucs’ starting quarterback Jameis Winston.

Jameis stepped to the podium this morning to talk to local media members ahead of practice and, as usual, raved about young players stepping up in training camp, including Justin Watson, Ronald Jones and Bobo Wilson.

But soon after, he mentioned the Bucs’ current starting right guard, Alex Cappa, as someone playing drastically better than a year before.

“And we got Alex Cappa on the offensive line who has been dominant,” Jameis said with incredible excitement.

Cappa has had a quiet camp. For an offensive lineman, that is a good thing because usually you are noticed when you do something wrong.

So, for Jameis to call Cappa dominant only confirms what appears to be the case: Cappa is earning himself a starting position.

None of this will matter if Cappa fails to show up beginning this Friday in Pittsburgh. But enjoy it for now, Bucs fans, because according to Jameis, this team has a dominant starting right guard.

Fingers crossed! Lord knows it can’t be worse than last year!

  2. LordCornelius Says:

I’ve seen Jensen get more beat up than Cappa in the highlights actually. Sucks because Jensen was a top 10 OG/C in Baltimore and we need him to play to that level. I doubt Cappa is actually just that good but who knows. Preseason should be useful for the O-line evaluation / depth evaluation

    GO BUCS

  3. Siege the Bay Says:

I get why they drafted Cappa, in his tape he was physically imposing his will. What i dont get is why the heck they benched him last year. Were we unable to coach him up, I mean Caleb wasn’t hard to beat.

good….as long as it continues against the regular season opponents

  5. casual observer Says:

Friday should tell us a lot.

  6. Isaac haggins Says:

Would be great to see , he was beyond bad last year but the NFL is a big step from his college days !! Hats off to him if he has improved that much !!! If he has , I know for sure he has really worked at it he wasn’t even practice squad performance ready this time last yr.

  7. Destinjohnny Says:

Believe it when I see it

  8. JimmyJack Says:

It will be insane if Cappa is our starting Guard. That would mean Bruce and his staff have done in 1 month what Dirk and his could not accomplish in 3 freaking years. Developing a single OL player.

And I guess you could debate that Cappa was mostly developed last year but when you look at the track record of three years and not one Guard, Center or Tackle that sounds very naive.

  9. Magadude Says:

Joe should do a poll to see who the biggest BS artist is. Choices could be Winston, BA, Jason Licht, or Dirk Koetter. All four dial it on hot and heavy, but the only one not proven hard over yet is BA…hopefully he turns out to be the real deal. But I remember how much of Godsend so many said Lovie was over Schiano, Koetter over Lovie, and now BA over Koetter. In two years, who will be the next Godsend over BA? I expect the QB and coaches to be playing up the players, especially encouraging those who may be on the bubble. But that’s where accolades stop and damage to cred starts.

Nice! When he was drafted we all knew he’s too slow for tackle but guard he’s a mauler!

  11. PriMech54 Says:

Marpet, Jensen, Cappa is an interior unit with a pretty nasty disposition. These guys will set the tone up front and help anchor the running game. Kinda worried about both tackle spots but hopefully this coaching staff won’t hang them out to dry too often. Donovan has slow feet and blanks out mentally from time to time and Dot’s back could trigger at any moment, leaving Watford, Benenoch, or Lietdke. Yikes. Although having a blocking phenom at the TE spot like OJ could mask some of those deficiencies.

My guess is they’ll be running loads of power runs, iso and quick screens. Anyone notice what schemes they seem to be running so far in camp?

  12. Stanglassman Says:

If he got a foot taller and gained 100 Lbs of muscle he could start rag doll’in the DTs like he did back at smoke allota weed U. His tape was equivalent to Jefferson playing at fast times at ridgemont high.

  13. JA Says:

A “tribute” to all the haters and their literary prowess:

Jones Watson & wilson are losers busts if I ever seen 1. I seen Wilson drop 3 pass yesterday And the qb is leader of pak cappa wears a dress and is a liberal snowflake….. any body could blow by capa and he will profe it this fri nite. Coach is old and dum and this team will go 1-15.my mother could play better than any one on the team and coach better 2. Fire light now and glazers are dummer then sh!t.
All u sheep no nothin and proof will b seen soon when the real fans already know!!!!!!!
lose em all an get tua I say. I ain’t hater call them as I c em.

    The End

  14. Bucsdelight Says:

    Ronald Jones? Please, big disappointment..

  15. Cgmaster27 Says:

@ja no you’re not a hater, just a moron with those comments. It’s clear youre not a bucs fan, go pick another team and spare us your “words of wisdom” you and bucs realsist seem a lot a like. Making multiple profiles to regurgitate the same crap maybe?

  16. Eric Says:

We need mega improvement from several guys.

    Cappa
    Jones
    Vea
    Jensen
    Jameis
    entire secondary
(several others probably but I am trying not to name the whole team)

Asking a lot, but I believe until proven otherwise.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

I give every drafted player 3 years to shine.

    Including Alex Cappa.

I know that doesn’t make me a typical Bucs fan…but oh well.

3 years. Not one year and he’s a bust!

  18. Stanglassman Says:

    And Spence

  19. #1bucsfan Says:

Same here buc1987 only prob with that I’ve had to tell my self is the last few coaches we’ve had have not developed players that well or at all. So we might have to give the Spence’s Hargreaves an so on a little more time but it sounds like this staff is doing a good job. Let’s see what happens wen the real lights come on an it’s game time

  20. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

If Cappa, Rojo and last year’s 3 DB do extremely well this year, it proves how terrible the coaches were last year. Only OC Monkey was worth keeping in my opinion.

  21. DooshLaRue Says:

Hope it’s true but Jaboo is a rah rah cheerleader.

  22. JA Says:

    Cgmaster–

First of all I only have one profile. Second, if you’ve ever read my posts you would know I often attack haters, albeit disagree would be more apropos. If you had read my “tribute,” you’d understand that I was making fun of haters, who I often disdain because it seems to be their single thrill in life, especially Realist. Hence the quotation marks surrounding the word tribute.
I won’t reciprocate with your colorful analysis of my personna (moron) because we are on the same side. But it might have been fun if we weren’t.

  23. Pittsshore Says:

&bucs1997: you contradict your idiot arse self. Staying above you give player 3 years to develop. Your man crush JW is on his 5th year to shine and he is no where close to shining.

  24. Magadude Says:

Speaking of Winston talking up his team mates…who doesn’t have their own billing on the side the RayJay again this year? And there are other guys that may be surprising to see up there.

Yeah, Winston is on it, but he’s sharing space…as in…not Mr. Marquee…don’t expect him to be thought of as the franchise anything for now. Not a surprise. He has to dig his way out still. The clock is ticking.

Also notable is Suh is adorning the SE side, wearing #93..in larger than life form. Knew it was coming, but bigger mural than I thought. Nothing against GMC, but that kinda thing would likely really bother him.

  25. Brandon Says:

JA, the misspellings were a nice touch and I liked the use of “then” instead of “than”. Most probably didn’t notice. But in the future, please use the word “loser” but spell it as “looser” and throw in some common player name misspellings like- Rhonde, Mark Alstott, Chris Sims, Charles Simms, who am I forgetting? Maybe you start new ones like- Goodwin, Capa (you did that), Parryman, Via, Sue, and maybe a surprise or two.
