Detecting Tradewinds

Ready to deal?

Very interesting comment by Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians on how to fix his roster for the regular season.

The Bucs are currently really thin on the offensive line, really thin at defensive tackle and really thin at safety.

On the other hand, the Bucs have oodles of wide receivers and tight ends, and maybe a fair amount of corners. And — brace yourself for this — the Bucs have kickers (plural)!

When talking about the roster after practice Sunday night, Arians did not discount a trade or trades.

“We’re short some spots and we’re deep in others,” Arians said. “So maybe we can flip some with other teams and get what we need.”

Now this is very interesting to Joe. Just who might be trade bait?

Joe understands a lot of fans want to trade Cam Brate but paired with O.J. Howard, Brate is dangerous. Not sure he would be dangled for players.

One guy who firmly placed himself on the bubble when it appeared he virtually had a spot locked up is receiver Justin Watson. He’s dropped a lot of passes in training camp, including passes where he is wide open. Too many in fact. And there were footballs he didn’t squeeze against the Steelers.

Arians has groused more than once about the Bucs not having quality backup tackles, or at least young backup tackles who have yet to develop. The injury bug has bitten safeties hard.

It will be interesting if Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht can swing a trade or two.

Why would anybody want a Buc castoff…….I can see and interest in Santos…..and interest in Tanner Hudson…..perhaps a couple of our UDFA WRs…..how about unloading Benenoch?

  2. DB55 Says:

Trade McIceCream for a 3rd round pick 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

lol yeahhh, Watson literally has no game tape. What we could get back from him would contribute nothing to the team. Vernon Hargreaves and Cam Brate are the only guys I could think of that are fungible, yet quality enough players to where we could get something other than just a warm body.

  8. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

or, before they get exposed!!!!!!!! They won’t play the steelers backups every week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Alanbucsfan Says:

They will bring in more camp players as teams cut down.
Veteran may be signed on final cut day.
Unlikely to get anything for backup receiver.
If they think they have something in T Hudson , a Brate trade for OLineman makes sense- lots if cap space freed. Cowboys need a TE.

  10. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Stupid to trade (Cameron), our best red zone weapon. Better to trade Antony Auclair with Hudson showing up.

Best move is to trade Cairo Santos. Several teams are in need of a good kicker.

  11. Hodad Says:

We’re thin at D tackle, and this draft was loaded with D tackles, how did that happen? Maybe if we would’ve drafted the best D tackle available, or Risner an O tackle with our high second round pick we wouldn’t be in this position. But hey, we got Bunting, a corner from a small school that looked completely lost Friday night. Five years of Licht drafting, and we still have little depth, or quality second round draft picks.

  12. Todd Says:

Trade Donovan Smith for Trent Williams.

  13. K2 Says:

I don’t think Bruce was talking about trading starting players. He’s looking for depth. We have a lot of depth a certain position and no depth at others. For example the steelers seem to have a lot of O-line depth. Every team is a little different…so some trades are possible. We just don’t want to put talent on the street for free….and that makes sense.

  14. Hodad Says:

We have tons of receiving options, Brate is the only piece who has value, and we can afford to let go. Not to mention he makes like 7 million, which means we can pay who ever we trade for.

  15. adam from ny Says:

trade gramatica…maybe you’ll get back his brother 🙂

  16. adam from ny Says:

swap cam brate for adam humphries 🙂

  17. adam from ny Says:

trade the 3 amigos apartment in tampa for an o-lineman…toss in ryan griffin to sweeten the pot… 🙂

  18. Sarasot Garey Says:

Or trade Levontae David or Ryan Griffin

  19. BA FAN Says:

    Trade Santos only.

  20. Sarasot Garey Says:

BA FAN, Santos to the Jets, I like it

  21. orlbucfan Says:

Brate’s going nowhere. Waiver wire/cuts will be interesting to all 32 teams.

  22. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Maybe trade the incompetent GM and pick up some quality starting OL

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bunting clearly had first game jitters. Too soon to write him off.

Evan Smith may have gotten us a 6th or 7th rounder. Teams could have justified that. But we have other player we can trade. Peyton Barber, for example. We could roll with backups this year, since it’s a contract year and we won’t be able to pay him next year if he does well.

Santos. A couple WRs. A TE. A couple DEs.

The time is right to trade Lavante David. We could use him, but we can get by without him too, thanks to White. And thanks to DEs becoming OLBs, we have incredible depth there.

    No need to trade Brate.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

    im thinking brate….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  25. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete (formerly known as 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs Fans') ***Rhealist, louden annoying, & tminimum are the worst posters ever!!! Says:

Pair Tanner Hudson with Howard and please trade Brate…

He prob has the most value out of our ‘expendable’ players…

  26. Defense Rules Says:

Good job Joe. You got the ‘Trade this, trade that’ conversation revved up.

Back to reality: Bucs won’t trade anyone. EVERY team knows that some quality veteran players will be released in several weeks so teams can get down to 53 men. Why trade a quality player NOW who you might NEED later on? (As in maybe NEEDING Cam Brate should OJ get injured again?). Better to see if you can shore up your weaknesses by signing a quality vet who gets released at the end of training camp.

I’m convinced that’s exactly what the Bucs will do. If for no other reason than they can negotiate a NEW salary for any vet who signs versus picking up their OLD salary if we trade for them. P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E.

  27. BrianBucs Says:

You can see now who is running the Bucs. Jason Licht is GM in name only, which to me is a good thing

  28. Jim Says:

Can we trade Licht? Just wondering…

  29. tmaxcon Says:

EVERY team knows that some quality veteran players will be released in several weeks so teams can get down to 53 men.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai … I agree on SMB. It’s laughable that some would get down on a rookie corner after ONE PRESEASON GAME.

However, trading Barber, LVD, Evan Smith is just as laughable (sorry, couldn’t resist). Barber is one of BA’s favorites it seems. LVD in INJURED … AND he carries a $10 mil pricetag. Not to mention that he’s the most experienced LB that we’ve got & has the capability to play at a Pro Bowl level in TB’s defense.

Nope, no trades on the horizon. But we will be adding several veterans when cutdowns occur I’d bet. What that means to some of OUR backups is anyone’s guess at this point.

  31. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Not going to get much in return of course, but both Bobo and Watson are likely #4 WRs on most teams and would be worth trading for some depth.

Same with Auclair and Hudson. Quality backups who could potentially land a #2 spot somewhere.

We should trade one of the two at each spot to some teams in need at those positions

  32. tmaxcon Says:

EVERY team knows that some quality veteran players will be released in several weeks so teams can get down to 53 men.

    D R

Really now I am CONVINCED you are a glazer brother or sister…. How has building this roster through other teams garbage, castoffs and rejects worked for the last decade plus????? Every damn year it’s the same thing going into training came with HUGE KNOWN holes that were NOT addressed or were addressed with GAMBLES that stand no chance… How many weeks did I hear from all you homers that Murphy was a solid number 2 and would be great for the bucs yet all he accomplished with Tampa was a legendary drunken night at the museum where he had to be rescued. murphy is just one example of bucs gambling with a player that had no chance.. dotson should have been replaced 4 years ago, smith should have never been signed and marpet is average at best yet the entire o line was ignored all off season. sorry pal but there is NO excuse for that.. BUILDING A ROSTER THROUGH OTHER TEAMS CASTOFFS, GARBAGE AND REJECTS IS EXACTLY WHY OUR BELOVED BUCS OWN THE WORST WINNING PERCENTAGE IN SPORTS HISTORY AND MORE BASEMENT TITLES THAN ANY OTHER FRANCHISE ON EARTH!!!!!!

Cancer93 should have been moved 3 years ago for at least a 3rd. There is no excuse for the failures of this minor league franchise. You can’t be this bad for this long without trying to be this bad… glazers have trained you well to hang on to 1 lucky expired championship and building through other teams garbage!

    Glazers have l

  33. tmaxcon Says:

brate has a hip, jpp is off teaching drivers ed, lvd has no value bad contract and proven loser…. godwin might draw some interest but jameis and evans are the only players that actually could be traded… remember other teams which you need at least one for a trade to happen do not share low standard bucfans affinity for mediocre players with no value. if bucs had ownership leadership and held the entire organization accountable it would not take 2 decades to be competitive

  34. Greg Says:

I like Brate but he would be the highest value trade bait we have. We would be able to get rid of his salary and get a good player in return that could actually start. Patriots would love him. A lot of big contracts could be coming up soon such as Winston and Godwin and Hargraves if he has a breakout year. Noah Spence could actually have a breakout year simply because he’s finally in the right system.

  35. gotbbucs Says:

Brate’s contract will make him hard to move.
    Same with LVD.

  36. tmaxcon Says:

vh3bust has HORRIBLE tape that low standard bucfan refuses to accept and averages about 8 missed games a year…. sure teams that want to win are lining up to give away valuable draft picks for a over-drafted, short, slow, stupid and fragile player with bad contract and bad tape… yep he has value…. man the standards on this site are lower than a strip joint by the airport in any town usa….

  37. tmaxcon Says:

bucfan is like a 16 year old girl all emotion no brains nor logic

  38. Defense Rules Says:

tmaxcon … I WISH I was a Glazer brother or sister. I’d be a lot richer and the Bucs would have done a lot better over these past years … HOPEFULLY. And BTW, teams are forced to cut some quality veteran players at the end of training camp. Besides, it’s not like the Bucs have oodles of salary Cap cash just waiting to be spent.

  39. tmaxcon Says:

    Defense Rules

i get what your saying but the results prove building a roster this way has not worked. there really is no hope until the glazers get a real football guy and not some has been from the failed past or dungy the one dimensional clown. a real well rounded football guy with no ties to the one year wonder has beens or some mythical tampa2 guru just a nuts and bolts football guy who can build it right without emotions or a has beens in his ear. glazers are making the same damn mistakes across the pond. they are the common denominator and the fact they pin their futures on frauds like cancer93 proves they don’t have a clue who to pick for coaches, players or staff…. they keep making the same mistakes over and over again. they wasted 6 years of sapps career with no chance to win with dungy the one dimensional clown. the only hire they got right was when daddy traded the farm for one good year before he died. bucs need to a real football guy to run things. not sure I know who that is but I know who it should not be…

  40. mark2001 Says:

I think some of you might be missing the point. It likely isn’t about trading starters for quality starters…it is likely about trading third stringers or something of that sort, for other backups….plug in backups and developmental guys.

  41. mark2001 Says:

I think he is, more specifically,s likely talking about guys that wouldn’t be able to keep or sign on the PS, because they are better than that, or no longer qualify, for similar guy….potential or stop gap guys that you would lose when final cut downs come.

  42. D1 Says:

    Defense,

I understand you’ve been a firm believer that the team a veteran d tackle and right guard for quite sometime. My question is why do you believe it?

The mythical quality veteran you’ve been seeking is imo, Exactly that mythical.
There’s been a few players that fit your description available as free agents since the season ended. Yet, the team passed on them all.

If you believe BA needed to see the current players before making a decision. That’s a common answer among fans. It , of course, is a huge insult to the BA is most professional coach ever crowd .

The team did sign a couple of players last week at the positions you identify.
Veteran guys , if you wish to call them that, but they signed players. Why do think BA is going to sign anyone who is going to step in and start ? It makes no sense and licht has had opportunity to do so and has not. Why?

Signing a better backup is what will probably happen. Doubting that whoever it is will be someone you’re familiar with or anyone else.

Unless we get extremely lucky, I won’t rule out a possibility, but it’s more lucky than designed , the quality of players you’re looking for are rare. Trading for a quality backup lineman especially on the oline is the option but they’re of such high value because of the extreme shortage of quality linemen it’s not going to be easy to trade for with a lesser valued position. A 3rd receiver is not equal to a 2nd string tackle or d end. Strictly a numbers game and , to date, the team hasn’t been able to get that done.

  43. Theodore Says:

“Let’s trade for Justin Watson,” said no GM ever.

  44. teacherman777 Says:

I called for us to sign Danny Brown as Suhs backup.

Watson and Benenoch need to be cut.

Why do we keep draft players just for their salaries?

  45. Slugglife Says:

Trade Brate. Dumbest FN thing I’ve seen said in this whole thread.

  46. Brandon Says:

No starters are getting traded. He’s talking about guys that won’t make the team in exchange for players that probably won’t make the team. He’s talking about getting decent depth so we can finish the preseason healthy. I swear it’s like some of you have never been around football on your lives.

  47. Defense Rules Says:

D1 … Every year a bunch of OLinemen are drafted, and other undrafted OLinemen will also make it to training camp. Some will make the team; some will make the practice squad; some will get sent packing. And every year a number of OLinemen retire or get hurt during training camp.

So there’s always a delta there, meaning that some OLinemen will be released so teams can get down to their 53 limit. The vast majority will be B-linemen (depth players) at best. But every year it seems several quality veterans get let go, usually for salary Cap reasons admittedly. Bucs are in a good position to grab 1 or 2 of those. As I look at FA OLinemen available (Spotrac), I still don’t see anyone I’d be willing to invest our relatively meager salary Cap dollars in. Not yet at least. And if all we end up with is a couple of ‘better backups’ then hey, I’d be satisfied with that. For the time being …

And tmaxcon … I obviously have a much higher opinion of BA & his coaching staff than you do. And I certainly have a MUCH HIGHER opinion of Tony Dungy & his coaching staff than you do. To each their own.

  48. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

In a perfect world, GM’s would trade bubble players like Bobo Wilson to a team that needs a WR early in camp so they can get a few reps and pre-season games in.

In exchange, the ‘Buc’s could pick up a bubble player like Ryan Nassib, but get him in camp early so he can learn the defense.

It’s not that Ryan was bad, it’s just that the Brownies had too many DE’s or the coach didn’t like him personally. The same with Bobo, the Buc’s just had too much depth at the position.

Maybe the Rams would trade Henderson for Bobo?

    The Saviour for Jesus?

  49. Bucsfan1988 Says:

My thoughts are if we need O-line depth, let’s work something w Dallas.
Isn’t Lial Collins a f/a after this season?

Dallas will have no cap room to sign him.

Let’s work out a deal for him and that solidifies RT position. Use Dotson as swing-tackle maybe?

Yeah Dallas needs WR and TE’s…..See what you can dangle to Jerry Jones..

  50. TDTB Says:

Brate to the boys for Collins or to NE for a RB.

  51. mark2001 Says:

    Brandon…BINGO… said the same thing.
