Defense Not Resting

August 25th, 2019

New energy?

Yeah, the talk of the preseason win over the Browns wasn’t so much about the win, it was about the chaos displayed by the Bucs offensive line.

Lost a little in the freakout over the jailbreak was that the defense played pretty damn good, especially the secondary. And Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians grinned like a proud papa yesterday in his game-after presser about how the defense played. Among the accolades Arians tossed out were that the cornerbacks played “outstanding” in the win.

“I think the guys have really bought into the system and are playing at a real high level, very, very fast,” Arians said.

Could it be a culture changer? We shall see.

But mentally, the guys that survived the imprisonment of the Mike Smith siege sure have a whole new mentality. Before it seemed as if defenders were either frustrated or depressed or both. Just going through the motions trying to find a way to escape.

Now, the same defenders seem genuinely excited to play for defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. As if they are born again.

Could it be that Bowles is turning loose the hounds and letting them be aggressive?

Really would like to have seen our 1’s go up against Landry/OBJ. Much better test then Roger Willies or whomever the browns trotted out there

  2. K2 Says:

The defense was fun to watch…Go Bucs!

  3. Lamarcus Says:

Like I said last year. Carlton Davis is the guy we needed to build around and he looks better than year

  4. Sport Says:

Damn Skippy! Here comes an identity. Hope is slowly turning to reality. Lets carry this to the regular season.

    In BA I Trust!

  5. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Bradentonbuc

Agreed. Happy with the way DB’s played, but it wasn’t against OBJ, Landry..or Julio, Sanu or Michael Thomas…

  6. BucEmUp Says:

Wait….are you telling me coaching can actually make a difference on a football team? All this time I thought the players were expected to make it work and that the coaches were just paid to stand there and be called a coach?

    WEIRD…..

    Agreed!!! Progress!!!

  8. Defense Rules Says:

“Turning loose the hounds”? One of the things I missed at the games is when the PA system would let loose with the song (?) “Who let the dogs out?” Reminiscent of the organ blaring ‘CHARGE’ at our ice hockey games back in college. Definitely got me charged up.

Maybe you could talk to BA about bringing that back Joe. ‘Who let the dogs out?’ that is, not ‘Charge’. And BTW, watching OUR defense in action Friday night was exciting. Brought back ‘the good old days’ when our Bucs were King of the Road defensively.

  9. Go Bucs 72 Says:

It sure is great to see the CB’s not lined up 7 yards off the ball on 3rd and two anymore.

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

“Very happy with the inside run defense

we stop the run, the more 3 and outs

*GMC with his cute swim move created more running lanes for our opponents

The Buc Realist owes Todd toilet Bowl comment an apology”

  11. tmaxcon Says:

bucs defense better get some damn rest they will be on the field the entire season… there is a no hope for the offense once again with a Dotson led offensive line… dotson and his fellow nfl imposters can’t block anyone and when they do try and engage they are so over matched they get a damn penalty. this defense will get tons of field time doubt they hold up.

  12. Patrick Says:

S-Josh Jones cut by Packers. Could be worth a look for Bucs

  13. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    Careful!

Here’s that positive press the Bucs D will read and think they’ve arrived and then slack-off the next game.

    It happens over and over.

  14. macabee Says:

We saw the defense on display Friday night with the 94th Aero Squadron (secondary) in action. I wondered what might be if they were at full mast with Lavonte David and Vita Vea back. This defense might be special with S Justin Evans now added to the mix. Ronde Barber says he’s seen the playbook and they’ve shown only 5 percent in preseason. Something to look forward to. Go Bucs!

  15. Buc1987 Says:

    We’ll see.

  16. unbelievable Says:

It was definitely encouraging… But BradentonBuc is correct. OBJ and Landry are on a whole other level from the WRs they played against Friday night.

  17. Adrnagy Says:

It was good to see no blown coverage, open receivers. Noah was close acouple times.

  18. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Yes, the defense played well, but unless we improve our O Line, we will end up in the cellar of the NFC South again this year.

  19. Rayjay1122 Says:

The biggest injustice done to the Defense this training camp has been making them practice against our OL. How can they prepare against NFL offensive lines practicing against OL starters that could barely be 2nd string on 31 other NFL teams?

  20. Tony1775 Says:

Maybe the Bucs of old. Defense keeps us in games or gets us the win. Offense does enough to squeak by. Think Bruce understands the defense is the strength, and trying to reel in the liability of turnovers with Jameis to limit mistakes and manage the game.

  21. Get a clue Says:

No David or Vea also. Pretty much was Suh and young guns

  22. NOSBOS Says:

Mac you won’t have to wonder for much longer. Only person you left out was JPP, trust me all will be on the field week 1. Kevin Minter said we will be a top 5 defense this season. It’s kinda easy to foresee considering how the puppies are performing on the back end. People saying they didn’t face Thomas,Julio or so and so man please. The eagles secondary was composed of a bunch of backups when they lost to the aints in the playoffs last year and had the win if the wideout simply squeezes the ball at the end if the game. And folks slobbing the browns (no disrespect to you Marine,I know you from the old hood) but y’all misguided. I don’t think they make the playoffs because the many egos in the locker room and the hotheaded nature of the QB. Also, we’ll see whose D line is better during the season. I’m taking Suh,Vea and JPP over any D line in this league next season.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

NOSBOS … JPP won’t be playing until the second half of the season, if at all this year. I’m sure that the Bucs would love to have him back in there, but only if he’s 100% and in football condition. That doesn’t happen overnight as we both know I’m sure.

I’d be ecstatic to see us get back into the Top-10, but would be more than satisfied if we make it into the Top-16 this year. That’d be a dramatic improvement over where we were last year.

And Julio & the Falcons don’t concern me either. We don’t even play them for the first time this year until Nov 24th. LOTS can (and probably will) happen between now & then. We could be at full strength by then for one thing. Our Secondary should be playing like seasoned vets for another.

  24. bucs4ya Says:

I’m excited about what this defense can become BUT I think we’re getting ahead of ourselves. I recorded the game and watched it again yesterday. We’re happy our DBs were making plays on the ball but that was the backup receivers. They’re was a drop in the endzone but the DB was beat I’ve gotta think OBJ or Landry come down with that. There were other drops where our guy was beat however the receiver dropped the ball. I’m not trying to be a Debby Downer I’m just saying pump the brakes a bit on the DBs. I can’t wait to see Vita and LVD back for game one and hopefully sometime this season JPP

  25. NOSBOS Says:

We’ll see about that come week 1 DR. Your take is based on the belief he really injured his neck. My take is based on the fact I believe all that was hogwash. We’ll soon see what’s good here shortly.

  26. JimmyJack Says:

Very excited about this defense. Friday Night was easily their best showing of the preseason because they were in a hole all night with awful field position.

To me the biggest thing is that all three games we have made lots of plays on the ball with fumbles INT trys and batted balls. This is going to be a drastic difference from last year’s defense where we literally went months at a time without sniffing a turnover.

I could care less about defensive ranking. It’s based on yards and means a lot less when you can make game changing turnovers. Think back to that Pittsburg. We had a chance to win at the end and it was all setup by a defensive turnover. Or the Browns game. Our offense struggles all first half and our defense is able to keep us in the game & within striking distance to comeback in the last 2 quarters.

We will win games with this defense of they play as advertised.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  27. 813bucboi Says:

So is VHG is a nickel…..lol….

Mayfield was scared to throw his way on the outside…..

Ive been saying for 3 years, the problem has been coaching and scheme not talent and players……

    GO BUCS

  28. bucs4ya Says:

813 I may be mistaken but I thought they threw at him early and he was beat however it was an overthrow( but an accurate QB would hit the player in stride for a TD)
But they didn’t go at him often I’ll give you that.

  29. Cobraboy Says:

Even the bottom roster D guys are flying around.

It is a beautiful sight to behold.

  30. BucEmUp Says:

RayJay1122, I agree with the drawback of our defense practicing against our oline and it making it more difficult.to prepare for better competition in games.

I just hope that someone ( not necessarily you ) that sees that would not criticize Jameis when he has practiced against the leagues worst defense year after year..The same defense that forces him into be a hero mode every Sunday.

  31. Mike Johnson Says:

Great coaching will only take you so far. After that..you’d better have very good players..especially on your Defensive line.

  32. Destinjohnny Says:

If we get jpp and big boy back….
We might actually have a interesting defense

  33. geno711 Says:

@NOSBOS I have not thought that JPP was faking his injury but always was thinking it was exaggerated and he did not need the brace on and was just choosing to show us photographs with his brace on. Tend to believe he will be available closer to game 1 than game 10.

  34. BucEmUp Says:

Mike Johnson your right, however it works both ways. You can have very good players with crap coaching and well….same result. Now we can actually guage exactly how lacking this teams talent pool really is

  35. Jason S. Mclaurin Says:

This defense is better hands down with the backups as of right now but once we get David, Vea, and JPP back I think this defense will be lights out. The DB group is playing way better off the press and blitz scheme. My starters at DB week 1 will be Hargreaves and surprise Sean Murphy-Bunting. I don’t think they like Carlton Davis as a full time starter at this point which is SMB is getting all the press and I feel he will be one of the ones to impress in the presason finale along with T. Hudson. I feel Watson and Wilson are locks for the final 53.

  36. Ptwalk Says:

It really doesn’t matter if their starting WRs didn’t play because last year we were torched by everybody and at no point did our corners look this good. In this game Baker had to make a lot tougher throws and their wide outs had to make tougher catches. That’s a credit to our defense whether you except it or not.
