“We’re Not Doing This Again”
July 9th, 2019The Bucs have been keeping their video department busy this offseason with fluffy get-to-know-him features on various rookies.
Joe has shared a few interesting nuggets and there’s another one in the latest edition featuring rookie kicker Matt Gay, the Bucs’ surprise fifth-round draft pick.
The full video is below and Joe was intrigued to hear Gay talk about his awareness of a split fan base when it came to drafting him.
Gay acknowledged that a faction of fans were sort of holding their heads saying, “We’re not doing this again.” Others, Gay said, were glad the Bucs attacked a position of need in the draft.
Joe’s first reaction was to wonder whether it’s good for a kicker to be paying attention to fan chatter. Is it?
Joe’s second vibe was that Gay knows he’s under a very unique microscope with the Bucs. That, in part, led to Roberto Aguayo falling apart, along with the Bucs inexplicably allowing him to change his successful college kicking mechanics.
Firs things first, of course, Gay has to win the kicking job from Cairo Santos. Yes, Joe believes it’s a real competition. Bucco Bruce Arians has not time to waste on developing a kicker.

Sounds like the real deal
Sure would be nice to not have to worry about the kicking game anymore!

Step one is admitting it… he knows there is pressure and is acknowledging this only can go up from here. I think we may have OUR Janakowski fellas!!
Go Bucs

Sounds to me that he has his head on straight………maybe he’s also a “savior”!!!

Definitely has the leg and the right attitude. Time will tell how he handles real pressure. I truly hope this guy is finally the answer for our kicking problems.

Wish he had the experience to match the confidence. He has been kicking only since 2017 huh? WOW!

Missed field goals/extra points have cost the Bucs quite a few games over the past few seasons.
Lets hope this year’s kicker is solid and can can hit in the 85% range on field goal attempts for the season.
Would be nice if the Rookie can be consistently accurate and show he is the best option – because the kid has a much stronger leg and thus at least 10 extra yards of range over Santos.

I can’t believe our luck with kickers…

Gay Savior… Yes, it would be nice to have the kicking game fixed once and for all.

LOL. Yer another article about a kicker. Lawrence Tynes is somewhere in America wondering why he did not get so much attention from the Bucs. The same organization that tries to recover their lost legal battle, with Tynes, by falsely filing a damage claim against BP for that oil spill in the Gulf.

Gay’s got the boot. No doubt. He was making a ton in the 40-50 yard range down the middle of the skinny goal post in the spring. I really think they’re going to work on his mentality throughout TC and PS to see if he can be the savior of many more Bucs games than before.

let’s all be honest here, when the Bucs 5th round pick was announced and it showed K – Gay, did anyone here not do a face palm?! Seriously, after an already frustrating draft, could it have been more comical? LOL

Hell yeah!!! WTF is this F’in bozo doing!! Especially after trading our top of the 3rd round pick to the Rams and missing out on Henderson!! Agree with the Ghost on his thoughts about him!

So.. Sebastian Janikowski kicked 68.8% his Rookie year. Im assuming everyone would be fine with that then and not calling for him to be cut when he misses a FG? Also there are number of teams experimenting with Kickers not just the Bucs. Bears, Vikings to name a couple off the top of my head. I believe SF is having a contract issue with theirs. Move on…

Nothing stresses me out more than watching a stupid field goal …

“Developing a kicker…”
LOLZ. What kickers in NFL history have ever been developed? They can either kick it through the uprights or they can’t, on a consistent basis.

The first Gay kicker in the NFL! Diversity realized
