theMMQB Predicting Doom
July 10th, 2019Bucs fans, if theMMQB is correct, the Bucs are in for a few months in the near future that only Stephen King might concoct.
Albert Breer, the captain of theMMQB.com who took over for Peter King, is one of the most well-plugged in NFL reporters out there. He just doesn’t throw crap against the wall.
Breer has, however, succumbed to the mock draft crowd and promised the masses he will bring NFL draft coverage year-round to his site. Why? Because the proletariat demands it.
Joe doesn’t think Breer would concoct something just to stir the pot and make himself look like a fool in the process. Breer is likely to put reasoned thought behind trying to figure out what teams will be targeting what players in a draft — even if we have no idea what teams’ records will be in January and what players will be eligible for the draft.
So Breer put together sort of a mini-2020 mock draft for the top-5 picks.
Now is when Bucs fans may want to pull their socks up and brace themselves. Breer has the Bucs picking a safety. Yes, Breer foresees a truly brutal season (again).
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Grant Delpit, S, LSU
Possible that the Tigers have a better safety prospect than Jamal Adams on their hands in 2019? Yes, it is. Delpit still has to prove he’s got the dog in him than Adams does, and he’s not quite the hitter Adams is yet either, but he’s bigger and a better athlete. And he can cover out of the slot, making him exactly what NFL teams are looking for at the position in 2019 (and presumably ’20).
(Surely the braintrust at One Buc Palace won’t be sniffing paint enough to trade up to draft a safety. They wouldn’t do that, would they? Then again, #ItsABucsLife.)
As sick as this sounds, this would not shock Joe. The Bucs sure do like safeties and if the Bucs did pick Delpit, that would mean three safeties in the past three years drafted in the first three rounds. But tell Joe, doesn’t that sound like a stunt the Bucs would pull, seriously?
As Joe typed earlier, Breer put thought behind this.
And Breer’s speculation tells Joe several things:
* Even though the Bucs, per Breer, will be so awful (again) to have a No. 5 pick, Breer hints the Bucs believe in America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, for 2020. In what is expected to be a draft with top-shelf quarterbacks, the Bucs will pass and instead draft a safety. If a team needs a quarterback they sure as hell are not drafting a safety. Thus, it seems Breer believes Jameis could get franchised. This backs up what another plugged-in NFL reporter said this week, that the Bucs are all-in with Jameis.
* Picking a safety at No. 5 means the defense is horrid again. If it wasn’t, then why in the world draft a safety at No. 5?
* The proud Bucs tradition of having trash for pass rushing continues. Why this team has such a low value on such a high priority like a pass rusher just blows Joe’s mind. You think there might just be a reason why the Bucs are in a decade-long playoff drought? Just maybe there might be a cause and effect here? Just maybe?
* Bucco Bruce Arians and/or Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, or both, will have survived yet another Bucs rotten season. Both of these guys love safeties. So drafting a safety at No. 5 is right up their alley. Totally believable. Joe just cannot imagine a new guy coming in from another organization and actually lobbying Team Glazer to draft a safety with a top-five pick.
The way Joe sees it, if Breer is accurate with his educated guesswork, it’s going to be a long, long, long fall, winter and spring.
If the Bucs pick a safety at No. 5, it would be beyond mindnumbing.
July 10th, 2019 at 5:22 am
If the Bucs are indeed in a position early 2020 to think they have to draft to S, we know one thing on that alone: Licht will not be GM at the time.
If the Bucs are picking 5th overall, there’s a good bet BA says “screw this” and rides out of here on his own.
If the Bucs are picking 5th, it it could very well be Winston didn’t meet the grade on picks/decisions/fan vibe along with another horrid D…and with a QB rich draft class and ability to avoid paying Winston 25% plus of the salary cap…there is as good a hint that the Bucs move on. Frankly, can’t read anything into this either way but if anything, Winston’s best situation is picking in lower half of the draft following at 9-7 or better season. That’s rough to expect right now.
Many things shall be revealed by New Years Day. I hope it’s all good…and NOT 5th overall pick.
July 10th, 2019 at 5:33 am
Predicting any draft targets this early in the game is premature,IMO I mean
lets evaluate their play before we decide to replace them. The main question
I have on Jamal Dean is his previous injuries and if he will have more in the NFL.
July 10th, 2019 at 5:48 am
This is a loose / loose for Buc’s fans…
If the Bucs are successful this season, then the Glazer stooges reward Licht with an extension…so we get stuck with more years of mind numbing moves from the GM.
If the Bucs suck again…then we are in jettison mode and most likely in total gut the roster and start over mode.
July 10th, 2019 at 5:55 am
Can’t believe that you’re giving any credence whatsoever to the MMQB crowd’s 202 draft prediction BEFORE the 2019 training camp has even begun. It’s either a horribly slow news day OR it proves some nebulous point about Jameis.
Aahh yes, there it is … picking a safety with our 2020 top pick means that Jameis is safe DESPITE leading us through a season worthy of a #5 pick (let’s say yet another 5-11 record?). What a bunch of horsepuckey. Now THAT’S a worthy poll … ‘How many believe that the Bucs could go 5-11 and Jameis would still walk away with $30 mil from either a franchise tag or a new contract?’
Not to mention that the Bucs POTENTIALLY have a very good stable of safeties right now. Mike Edwards is going to be a stud. Jordan Whitehead played decent as a rookie & will surely get even better under new coaching. Justin Evans, once his foot heals up, shows great promise. And don’t sleep on Kentrell Brice, he could very well be the surprise of the bunch.
So the Bucs, with a supposedly lousy record in 2019, bypass DEs in 2020, a position of need right now. We bypass OLinemen, a position group of need right now. We bypass RBs, a position of need right now. We even bypass QBs, a position of supposedly great strength in 2020, because surely Jameis is worth $30 mil and keeping Blaine Gabbert as his primary backup keeps his fragile confidence intact. Of course the MMQB crowd’s scenario makes sense. I’m just not sure to who.
July 10th, 2019 at 5:58 am
What safety might we draft in 2030?
July 10th, 2019 at 5:59 am
Bob in Valrico … Since I’m in ‘Awaiting Moderation’ he11 at 5:55 AM (yet again), I’m curious if you’re insinuating that the Bucs MIGHT draft yet another corner with our top pick next year if Dean proves to be fragile. Now THAT I wouldn’t put past the Bucs.
July 10th, 2019 at 6:00 am
Given Justin Evans recurring problems with his toe,it might have smart to tender an offer to Andrew Adams whose INT’s and pass defense was better
than our 8 million dollar corner who didn’t want to cover the number 1 receiver.
July 10th, 2019 at 6:06 am
If we are drafting top #5….it won’t be Licht. That will mean 5 of 6 seasons in the basement of our division under his guidance. Arians won’t be able to save him.
July 10th, 2019 at 6:17 am
Joe is trolling to find something to write about. Must be a slow news week
July 10th, 2019 at 6:22 am
Defense, I got confused on Dean’s position. I was thinking he was the safety
instead of Edwards. I was also waiting moderation about the same time.
July 10th, 2019 at 6:25 am
what we have here is a communication breakdown . 3 moderations in a row.
July 10th, 2019 at 6:25 am
My mind is already numb due to all the defensive backs that we have now. It’s way early yet for mock drafts, so with that in mind, I will conveniently forget that I read this article to save what’s left of my sanity. 😌
July 10th, 2019 at 6:26 am
4 do I hear 5
July 10th, 2019 at 6:29 am
This points more to the problem of how this organization is built like a house of cards!!!!!!!!!! We are going to hear this year of every excuse why the QB did not take the next step, but with another year could possible might!!!!! The Buc’s will keep the bad GM because jw3 depends on it!!!!! as long as the qb is in tampa, the gm will never evaluate that position, and will keep trying to build around the one decent draft he had back from 2015 with bad draft after bad draft!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Coaches were here to not evaluate the qb, but to fix jw3!!!!!!!!!! Every mock draft for 2020 have the bucs in the top 10, and most have them selecting QB or LT!!!!!!!!! But that won’t happen because instead of “what is best for the Team”, we will see once again, ” what is best for their jobs”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What happened to all the ” hold them accountable”??????????????
2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 10th, 2019 at 6:45 am
Defense , I’ll try again . I have injury concerns on Dean, but I hope not. Was also thinking he was a safety instead of a corner.
July 10th, 2019 at 6:49 am
Not sure why people are sleeping on Whitehead. The dude can ball and hit.
July 10th, 2019 at 6:53 am
Defense Rules—
Crushed it.
July 10th, 2019 at 7:13 am
Bob in Valrico … Interesting that you brought up Dean because I was thinking the same thing when we drafted him. Bucs seem to have this predisposition towards drafting college players with injury histories. It’s like ‘Hey, let’s gamble a 2nd rnd pick on this guy because IF he heals up we’ll have a steal’. We’ve had quite a few Top-3 rounds picks fall into that category in these past 5 years or so. Someone needs to teach Jason not just about team-building but also how to gamble better.
Had an uncle named Dutch when I was young who was a bookie by trade (he passed). Quite a character; he’d bet on anything. Can still remember him saying ‘If you gamble and win, it’s a job. If you gamble and lose, it’s a very expensive hobby.’ I’ve thought for years now that the Glazers must look at JL’s tenure here as our GM as a very expensive hobby. They’ve burned through an awful lot of money because of poor gambles.
July 10th, 2019 at 7:22 am
I thought Bucs draft talk begins in early to mid October, at least give us our 2 1/2 months of hope.
July 10th, 2019 at 7:38 am
Defense and Bob,
Gentlemen,
They way you two are carrying on about Jameel Dean’s injury history it begs the question.
Do you understand the injury was from high school and he played the last two seasons without an injury?
And he ran a 4.3 40 ……healed, Gentlemen, healed.
July 10th, 2019 at 7:41 am
If they are picking at 5, the new GM will select a QB! That’s it!
July 10th, 2019 at 7:45 am
I saw that mock draft yesterday….well it’s a good thing they drafted OL & DL with the first 4 picks in 2019
July 10th, 2019 at 7:46 am
This is definitely a slow off-season…to be making these kind of predictions before training camp is just ridiculous…I know we haven’t earned much respect in recent years but goodness…
July 10th, 2019 at 7:47 am
“Why? Because the proletariat demands it.”
Didn’t know Karl Marx and V.I. Lenin were football fans. Always thought they were lopsided, economic theory revolutionaries and dialecticians with little time to incite pigskin unrest. Now they’re calling upon “their people” to demand a premature NFL draft?
The world continues to make little sense.
Thanks Joe. The educational value of your site is unparalleled.
Seems I learn something new everyday …
July 10th, 2019 at 7:48 am
If they are picking #5 next year, I’m going on record right now predicting they will go 10-6 the following season.
Why? It’s a baseless optimism thing.
Some people have drug or drinking problems, I have a perpetual glass-half-full issue.
Happens.
July 10th, 2019 at 7:54 am
With the 5th pick in the 2020 nfl draft the Tampa Bay Bucs select Ricky Aguayo kicker FSU. The brother of Roberto. HAHAHAHA.
July 10th, 2019 at 7:54 am
Magdu and bucsreal a quarterback is not the answer to all the team problems. If we do draft another quarterback this team is still going to lose. To build a team the defense must be built first. Yall hate Jamies so much that yall just can’t see why we lose. All the teams that win are the ones that can play defense and they can run the ball. The thing is that yall let the national media brainwash yall thinking. When they talk about the bucs problem all they talk about is the quarterback even though we ranke last in defense last in rushing and so that’s why we lose not cause of quarterback. What do they say who a quarterback best friend is ? A running back something Jamies never had since his rookie year and the defense was ranked 32 so how can any quarterback help a team win with those problems????
July 10th, 2019 at 7:56 am
As we know these guys are 99% wrong about draft picks until weeks before it arrives, no idea why anyone would give this article validity when this years team has not even taken the field yet. Please training camp hurry so we can get real news not crazy talk
July 10th, 2019 at 7:56 am
This makes zero sense. If we suck this bad, we’re probably drafting a new QB, or if on the outside chance somehow Jameis survives another worst 5 record, we’re going pass rusher.
July 10th, 2019 at 7:56 am
Buccaneer Cove
Last place
Top 5 draft pick botched
It’s a Bucs Life
July 10th, 2019 at 8:08 am
If we’re picking at #5, which is ludicrous that we’re even talking about anyway, it won’t be a safety that we’ll be picking!
Movin’ on!
July 10th, 2019 at 8:13 am
Awww, C’mon.
Let’s evaluate a bunch of 10yr old safeties now for the 2030 draft.
It will be about as intelligent as discussing these “fortune teller” predictions.
July 10th, 2019 at 8:17 am
Groundhog Day.
July 10th, 2019 at 8:21 am
@Realist … “the gm will never evaluate that position, and will keep trying to build around the one decent draft he had back from 2015 with bad draft after bad draft!”
Still trying to get my head around how Lovie PICKED Jason to be HIS GM in 2014 and no one holds JL responsible for the 2014 draft (Mike Evans sole survivor) … it was all on Lovie. That same Lovie blew the 2014 season, perhaps intentionally (certain irony in the 2 dash 14 record in 2014?). So why would you then give Jason CREDIT for the 2015 draft? Wasn’t that Lovie’s doing also with Jason playing nice lapdog?
July 10th, 2019 at 8:29 am
Seriously Breer looks like Peewee Herman all he needs is the bowtie and his “prediction” is haa haa haaa hilarious!
July 10th, 2019 at 8:45 am
If the Bucs even pick at #5, I will be livid. If JW can’t carry this team to at least 7 – 9, 8 – 8 we should consider a QB. I’m so sick of basement titles and trying to win the draft..
July 10th, 2019 at 9:17 am

July 10th, 2019 at 9:19 am
He said IN THE COLUMN he simply based the draft order on Super Bowl odds.
July 10th, 2019 at 9:20 am
15 days….
July 10th, 2019 at 9:28 am
DR
good stuff…..
especially catching @realist with his pants down…yet again….
imo, the only way winston and licht return with a 5-11 season is if we jump out 3-0 and he has a season ending injury(GOD forbid)…..
GO BUCS!!!!
July 10th, 2019 at 9:37 am
DE or OL next year if Winston stays. No way are the Bucs picking a Safety again. They need to develop the players we have or sign a vet. Breer is an idiot.
July 10th, 2019 at 9:47 am
There’s no way the Bucs do this because Backstabbin’ Jason Licht should be fired by then.
July 10th, 2019 at 9:51 am
Guessing there is no bigger waste of time than breaking down a mock draft that is a season away. Predicting the Bucs will pick in the top 10 makes you look smart 95% of the time unfortunately.
July 10th, 2019 at 9:54 am
You would think so. But we’re talking about the Bucs.
July 10th, 2019 at 10:12 am
If we end up taking a Safety it means the world has come to an end for the Bucs. If we draft 5th the world has come to an end!
For all of that to happen means it’s finally time. BLOW IT UP!!!
I do not see this as happening but if this dude is correct about the failure part…if we can’t win at least 8 this year…BLOW IT UP.
I think JW has talent but if we have another losing season…JW…Licht..most of the team are gone or should be.
Then when we rebuild we surely will not start at safety and build from the back to the front.
AGAIN…I do not think we’ll suck this year so it’s just off season kibitizing but if we do we have to blow it up and do what many posters have been screaming for years…start building this team on the lines.
July 10th, 2019 at 10:34 am
D1
There is more imfo out there on deans injuries. He was going to play for Ohio State
in 2015, but was not able to play.He then transferred to Auburn where he got injured in training camp and sat out 2016.
He is fast and I hope he balls out, but it won’t stop me from being a bit
concerned about his previous issues. We are just one of those teams that is
often snakebit by injuries.
July 10th, 2019 at 11:36 am
I can’t even..
July 10th, 2019 at 11:37 am
@Oneilbucs…you are wrong as usual. I know exactly why we are losing; and I also know (probabably much better than you realize) what the larger organization problems are. I have always said Winston is but ONE of many reasons this team loses. I’ve stated clearly why if the status quo keeps up why he’d be gone.
July 10th, 2019 at 12:01 pm
This prediction is akin to scratching a dollar scratch off.
July 10th, 2019 at 12:17 pm
6-10 and bringing in some people with football knowledge to rebuild this team from the inside out and know that an SEC player is always going to be better than a D3 player
July 10th, 2019 at 3:28 pm
Derwin James….why didn’t we draft him again???
July 10th, 2019 at 3:30 pm
Why didn’t see draft Derwin James again???
July 10th, 2019 at 3:59 pm
Thanks for sharing what the MMQB thinks cause idgafos what they think, I know everyone said Bucs were going 0-3 last season… Go Bucs!!! No way they pick 5 next year someone would have to die or go to jail…
July 10th, 2019 at 4:12 pm
We need to keep building the trenches. Trading out big contracts with premium draft picks would be ideal. Im hopping we pick late in the draft and get a stud RB. I like the kid from Wisconsin. Or Dobbins from Ohio State.
July 10th, 2019 at 5:18 pm
If Licht is still the GM, I could see us drafting more safeties, and DB’s. However if we’re picking 5th again next year, how could the Glazers justify retaining Licht?
