Rough Day For “3”

July 26th, 2019

Seen better days.

Joe isn’t sure whether to chalk this up to nerves, being over-hyped or more likely improved defensive back play. But Joe cannot recall America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, having this bad of a practice as he had today in the Glazer Shed to kick off Training Camp 2019 at One Buc Palace.

Picks were a problem early. Later, passes that were just off were tipped by receivers into the waiting hands of Bucs defenders.

(Yeah, Joe gets that it was the first practice. That doesn’t and shouldn’t mean a thing. How many months has Jameis been throwing to receivers both at and away from One Buc Palace? Hell, just earlier this month Jameis was in Tallahassee with three teammates tossing passes to them, and he was in Quarterback School with coaches early this week for three days.)

No, Joe is not condemning Jameis in any way. Just, as always, writing what Joe is seeing. And Joe saw ugliness from Jameis’ throws. Too many in fact.

Yeah Jameis will throw a pick or two in practice, That’s normal. Throwing bunches of picks and having passes sail off-target resulting in tipped picks? That is abnormal.

Oh yes, Jameis had sharp throws. A beautiful long pass to O.J. Howard in the left corner of the end zone. Hitting Mike Evans on a crossing pattern for another six points was yet another strong throw.

Unlike past practices, Jameis seemed to have more picks than he did quality throws. Not a good ratio.

At one point, a Bucs receiver had to drag a defensive back to the ground to prevent an interception.

Blaine Gabbert may have had a better practice. Maybe. That’s only because his incompletions were so high that Manute Bol wouldn’t have had a prayer of catching them.

Yes, the offense is still new. For nearly everyone. Yes, guys could have been running sloppy routes. Yes, as stated before, the Bucs’ secondary was flying all over the place — something Joe is not used to seeing.

But for the first practice, Jameis was so off-target this bears monitoring throughout training camp.

It seems Jameis is in mid season form …

  7. DB55 Says:

Yup, panicked and getting hit within 1 second of getting the ball. Thanks Dotson!!!

  8. Joe Says:

If you had to guess …

How many picks did he throw ?

Know he had three. Should have had four. On pass down the right sideline receiver dragged the corner down to the turf to prevent a pick (guys were too far away to see numbers and Joe didn’t have his binoculars out on the play).

More than a couple batted down in traffic. One pick was housed.

  9. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

LMFAO altered!!! Interested in the guess of how many passes were picked.

  10. Bird Says:

4 picks it was it sounds like. But credit was given to dbs making plays.

Apparently Gabbert had the better day. Connected on 2 deep balls to perriman is what I like to hear.

Sounds like Perriman and Watson should be good battle for third spot.

  11. Bird Says:

    Whoops. Thanks joe.

  12. DB55 Says:

BA and Tom Moore could do a better job than Dotson and _____________.

  13. Bird Says:

CAnt wait for pads to come on !

  14. BucEmUp Says:

Considering this will be the first time he practices against a real nfl defense in his career, I would say this is the beat thing that has ever happened to Jamies

Must have been the humidity right?

  17. Stanglassman Says:

The defense is ahead of the offense at the beginning of training camp is not news. Ill get concerned if it continues after the first week or two.

I was just reading up on some of the UFAs and lesser known players to familiarize myself with all the camp players. Draft scout had a 3rd round grade on Wr Demarcus Lodge. He, Rb Bruce Anderson and G Zack Bailey (S. Carolina) are a few players to keep an eye on.

“Déjà vu all over again” …. Ndog says it was Koetters play calling, coaching and lack of running game

From the clips you posted on twitter looks more like chaos to me but wtfdik

  20. tickrdr Says:

Some wag might ask how you can expect him not to throw picks in underwear football with no defense, no running game and a terrible kicker.

    tickrdr

  21. JimmyJack Says:

This is a good thing cause if he don’t make mistakes Bruce will have nothing to fix.

Now let Bruce wisper and start getting excited for the games!

  25. Louis Friend Says:

Snore. He looked terrific last year. Look where that got them. Hope he’s nervous, he should be.

  26. Anonymous Says:

New defense guys. I doubt Jameis and his teammates did much tape review on Todd Bowles defenses. I don’t like the pics, but I’d honestly be more worried about Jameis tearing it up on the defense. The defense should have an upper hand since they have been practicing together and the offense is basically playing them for the first time without any film study. I’m pumped for our defense. Seems like they are going to be a lot more challenging to play against this year… And let’s be honest, we all know Jameis is going to let it fly every play knowing it doesn’t matter. Let’s just hope he cleans it up and gets better each day.

  27. Destinjohnny Says:

In jameis defense it was his first practice
But that practice is trademark jameis
Some great passes and reads mixed in with inconsistently

Petty vultures already swarming so sad so sad to be enjoying this news like it wasn’t the first of training but the third preseason game. Stay classy fake buc fans uh i mean loyalists lol whatever

  32. Buccernutter Says:

This could have been delivered so many ways but we get to see jameis had the worst practice of his career. Smh

    Pessimism runs rampant on jbf.

  33. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    The excuses are hilarious

He looked bad today, really bad

  34. JimmyJack Says:

There’s overreacting and then there’s AltedEgo. Get a grip bro.

  35. Defense Rules Says:

This was the first day of training camp, wasn’t it after almost 2 months off? Sounds like pessimism is running amok on JBF.com. Fans need to chill for a bit.

  36. JimmyJack Says:

Bruce hasn’t even had a chance to wisper yet. Calm down and let him wisper. And get ready to root for a winner this year.

  37. BigHog Says:

It’s only the first practice, …the process has begin! GO BUCS GO FAMOUS GO SUHY!!

  38. Jim Says:

If Blaine Gabbert makes Jameis nervous…

  39. Race to 10 Says:

Let the Joe’s tell you anything because they cater to the most ignorant of bucs fans. Dont you think the defense knows our offense well enough to have better anticipation than normal? Picks never look good but stop over reacting it’s the first day of camp and no pads are on.

  40. BucsBandit Says:

    ***WAIT A SECOND HERE***

    How is this possible??????????????????????????

    – Clyde Christiansen is a ‘master’ at fixing accuracy issues. He’s been working with Winston for months.

    – Winston got that new software for VR that made Palmer so great.

    – Bruce Arians is the “QB Whisperer” and has spent many many hours already working with Winston on throws, plays, as well as studying film. We were guaranteed Winston would only bet better.

    – Our awful Running Game was supposed to be the reason he hasn’t played well, because that’s what NDog, ONeilbucs, and so many others on this site have been swearing for the entire off-season.

    – We were told Jameis Winston has already put trending HALL OF FAME numbers so far.

    *****HOW IS THIS HAPPENING???????*****

  41. BucEmUp Says:

Anyone else remember when the Bucs manhandled the Jags in training camp?

Then what happened in the regular season?

    EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS PRACTICE!!!!!

    ITS COACHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. Rod Munch Says:

OMG, he had a bad first practice in a new offense!?!?! THE SEASONS OVER!!!

  43. JimmyJack Says:

There’s overreaction & then there’s Bucs Bandit. Get a grip bro.

  44. JimmyJack Says:

So what? If Winston has a bad practice the haters are gonna freak out like this? Then what if he has a good practice? Are the nugglers gonna show up talking about Canton?

Dang and I thought I get worked up on Gamedays.

  45. Anonymous Says:

Does anyone know when Arians will start the whispering process?

  46. Jeffbuc Says:

Oh no are qb thee three picks aagianst a brand new defense. It means nothing it is actually good news to me. Sounds like are defense is improved and that in itself can get us 3-4 more wins. If this article was in week three of training camp then I would be worried because that would mean in three weeks jameis couldn’t figure out are defense.

  47. Stanglassman Says:

    BA press conference.

    Q. How did you think Winston played today?

    A. Fantastic.

I’ll take the coaches word over JBF or the people who’ve been rooting for JW3 to fail since he was drafted.

  48. Tye Says:

    Sounds about right..
People fawning over a liability and a detriment to the team…

  49. BucsBandit Says:

JimmyJack – it’s hardly an overreaction. I’ve been consistent in my criticism of Winston…

    I’ve consistently stated HE SUCKS.

You’re just too blind to see it.

  50. BA FAN Says:

It is what we have seen at the first of games when Jameis is too fired up and his passes are off. He was just too hyped up to start camp. He will settle down.

  51. Buccaroo Says:

Maybe Blaine Gabbert was wearing a fake Ryan Fitzgerald beard. This young secondary is going to make Jameis look like crap or maybe Jameis is making them look great. idk but ..there’s got to be an excuse somewhere? Que Ndog

  52. I Bleed Pewter Says:

    He had 5.

  53. Adrnagy Says:

Todd was eating up Jameis to teach him a lesson. Todd knows that offense like he does with his defense. Bruce probably told Todd to light it up. Manage the game Jameis not you.

  54. D4 Says:

People are getting worked up over TRAINING CAMP but if jameis went out there and lit the defense up then y’all would say the defense still sucks

  55. Magadude Says:

No issue on a bad practice. Not worried about that at all. One question would be if he’s inconsistent though camp and pre-season…that can indicate he’s the same old Winston. I’lll add, if Winston has nerves getting him before practice going into his 5th season, he’s got serious problems to factor into keeping him around, because imagine how he’d be going into a playoff game.

  56. Bob in Valrico Says:

Watched some of the plays elsewhere. Jameis had a mixed bag of good and bad throws. The pass to Bobo was not particularly well thrown. He had TD’s in 11 on 11 that were well thrown.
A comment on the Bobo play, I wish the play design would give the receiver a bit more room to work. If a ball is thrown at or near the sideline the sideline acts as an extra defender and limits the receiver room to maneuver. IMO this ball should
be thrown on the break not at or near the sideline.

  57. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Just curious, Joe, but how different did the coverage look to previous years?

  58. JabooBuc Says:

Iverson would be up in your grill talkin bout practice. The very first day and you act like the sky is falling.

    You know he is.

  61. Magadude Says:

There is no reason to worry about Winston throwing picks at practice. Winston’s got the job locked up, and few would argue that this is the best pass D in the league as it is. No QB can be successful against these guys.

  62. Real talk Says:

Everyone is so quick to throw Winston out as a garbage qb for throwing interceptions but everyone loves Brett farve and he is the all time interceptions leader. From PeytonManning teabagging a female student in college or big Ben’s multiple sexual assault accusations. They won a Superbowl so it makes what they did ok. Or is just a simple a race issue

  63. Oneilbucs Says:

If he hadn’t thrown no interceptions yall will be saying it’s just practice it really doesn’t mean nothing. But when he do it’s a problem he suck. I can’t wait until he’s gone and he end up with the Patriots cause he will win there as a starting quarterback. And we will draft another quarterback and still lose. Cause people on this site don’t understand team.
