Fun With Kickers II (Video)
July 28th, 2019Yesterday the highlight of Bucs training camp was rookie kicker Matt Gay booming a pair of long-range field goals that cleared the netting behind the goal posts.
Today, while it may not have been a highlight of the day, incumbent kicker Cairo Santos gave Gay and Bucs suits something to think about.
Just like Gay yesterday, Santos booted both a 52-yard field goal and a 57-yard field goal at the same posts. While the kicks did not clear the netting, a field goal is a field goal.
Ladies and gentlemen, the gauntlet has been thrown down. The Bucs have a good old fashioned kicking competition.
And Joe sure as hell hopes whoever wins continues to kick well deep into the season.

Trade santos to the bears for a box of family size Funyuns and a late round pick

Keep both kickers. Stranger things have happened. If Santos wins, put Gay on the practice squad.

The bears signed Elliott Fry S. Carolina kicker. I thought he was the best college kicker coming out this year. Gay 2nd best. They also have the gator kicker Eddie P. come out this week and both my of them have kicked really well so far.

You don’t put kickers on the practice quad and there is no way you take up a spot on the 53 with a backup kicker. The only exception is if that kicker is a gunner on special teams or your starting punter. You would just be putting him on the PS for the first NFL team to get a injury at kicker. They would just activate Gay to their lineup. You have no rights to your PS players if someone else wants to activate them.
Best thing to do is give them both plenty of chances in the preseason. If it’s close and both look good you go with Gay because he has a higher ceiling and if Santos looks better go with him despite the draft pick you gave upto get him.

Seems as though Licht wasted a 5th rd pick on a kicker when they already had a capable kicker. Licht strikes again.

Not really. Santos was not reliable last year.
