Roster Roulette

June 7th, 2019

Shuffling the roster.

If a Bucs player is not starting, he better watch his back.

That’s the hint Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians threw out to the local pen and mic club at the conclusion of underwear football season yesterday.

When Arians was at Arizona, he was known for always adding new players. For those who watched the Amazon exclusive “All or Nothing,” often Arians and his general manager Steve Keim would bring in players, sometimes former Pro Bowlers whose careers were running on fumes, to come in and sometimes only play a few select plays each game.

Arians suggested yesterday that philosophy will continue with the Bucs.

“If there’s a better player than what we’ve got, we’ll swap him out,” Arians said. “That’s not just 90, that’s 53 [man roster]. Just because [in] September you’re on the [roster], there might be somebody else we like a little bit better.

“You’re always churning the bottom of that roster and your practice squad looking for guys. You get set in stone and you’re stuck.”

Joe understands this will be music to many Bucs fans’ ears. Good players who aren’t washed up sometimes land on the sidewalk looking for work. The Bucs often would turn their noses up on the guy but the same player would sign elsewhere and contribute.

Meanwhile, the Bucs would pile up loss after loss.

Last Joe checked, the Bucs have lost 22 games in the past two seasons. They shouldn’t be copping a haughty attitude with anyone who has had prior success in the NFL.

Of course, the flip side of this is, would a name free agent want to come to Tampa Bay? You know: 22 losses in the past two years and worst NFC home record since 2009.

    Nuff said.

The answer is yes, and it all has to do with a man named Bruce Arians.

REBUILD MODE…. how does licht still have a job. The roster is getting flipped, need OL & duke johnson

  4. mike Says:

@dusty… jason got a stay of execution bc he brought in BA

  5. Unimpressed Says:

Most of these guys aren’t worth keeping anyways, churn that roster. If Dotson and Benenoch are still starters by the beginning of the season, we have problems.

  6. Timbo Slice Says:

If you ask me, the issue isn’t finding the available talent, it’s being able to afford it in this tremendous cap space hole we’ve dug ourselves.

    Joe

What are your thoughts on donald Penn? Is he washed up due to injury or worth a look?

  8. DB55 Says:

Just took a look at the Raiders OTAs and there a huge contrast in energy and tempo. They look like a bunch of hungry grown arse men.

  9. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

They would come for the coaching BA !

I don’t hate on Duke Johnson but I am not sure that anyone has ever seen him as something special in the NFL.

If all the mock draft analysts were right that Rojo should have been a 2nd round pick and Koetter was the problem last year – then why can’t Rojo be a better player than Duke Johnson next year.

FYI Rojo by NFL.com was a 6.01 rating to Duke Johnson 5.75.

Duke Johnson clearly will cost you more (4 million per year). Are you ready to make him your #1 back over Barber?

To your point if there were a solid RG we could get for 4 million per year I would do that.

Once you get the hell out of Tampa….

Why would you want back in?

    🙂

Less us all hope this also goes with the QB’s who on this blog think our franchise QB is worth $25,000,000.00 a season? Who will we need to cut next year to fit that numbers into our cap? I for one am not impressed enough to want to pay that price, I do not see 20 million a season either. Who gets cut because of it, or who doesn’t get resigned? Big choices for the front office. But this all is putting the cart before the horse. That will work itself out by January 2020.

  13. Joe Says:

    DB:

Don’t think they will sign Penn to be a backup. Nor do Bucs have cash to pay Penn to be a backup.

  14. Mr. Lucky Says:

Our coach has the right philosophy – look at the NE Patriots and how they have men in there for a season on less and they get the job done.

    Bring it on man!

BTW Who is the smoking hot blonde?

  15. Lord Cornelius Says:

Duke Johnson is more of a pass catching RB than pure RB.

Would rather trade for Matt Breida who runs very well in between the tackles on top of being a good pass catching back.

Hopefully Rojo does not = Kenny Bell.

At least Rojo had like 2 decent preseason runs (1st carry he got he made a cut back at the LOS and got 5 yards when it could have only been a 1 yard gain. Then the jump cut on the TD run). Not sure Bell had any good preseason plays.

ALl if Rojo 2018 regular season yards were AFTER contact.

    GO BUCS!

Has anyone heard from or seen M.J. Stewart?

Has he done anything noteworthy in OTA’s?

Is he even on the “first” field?

  17. DB55 Says:

Lol. You both have very valid points. 🤣

  19. Magadude Says:

Yeah, and Arians only has 16 losses in his last two seasons. Licking my chops over the prospects of breaking .500. I just can’t contain myself. Yessiree…Bruce will have our team “Tennessee ready.”

Talk is cheap, and hope is for those who despair. Neither gets you so much as a cup of coffee.

  20. Clean House Says:

Pivotal moment of failure in my opinion- the main components of the offens were geeked out about training in Houston and playing with Adrian Peterson- one of the best all time who went on to sign with Washington and hit over 1,000 yards. Buffoon boy and Granny Koetter thumbed their noses up at an obvious team excitement, chemistry brewing.

Until Licht is fired there is zero chance. He’s absolutely terrible. A moron to the highest extreme.

  24. GetOverIt Says:

Don’t wanna swap out developmental guys with future potential for veteran guys who are only playing a few snaps per game. Gotta balance out those interests.

  25. J Says:

Yeah…that’s why Suh came here, the 22 losses.

I used to have the same sentiment about getting players to come here..and then Arians and Bowles and their army of coaches showed up.

    This narrative is now moot.

  26. 813bucboi Says:

    good to hear….

    keeps players on their toes….

    GO BUCS!!!
