BSPN: Over!

June 25th, 2019

Season starts.

No, we’re not talking season-win totals — though Vegas wiseguys at Westgate are calling internationally popular JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman looking for intel — true story!

(When a vice president of one of the largest sportsbooks in the free world calls Ira, you know Ira has both connections and clout!)

Over at BSPN, they are throwing out all sorts of over/unders for the 2019 season — things like, will Matty Ice throw 8.5 picks or will Drew Brees throw over/under 3,850 yards.

And yes, there is one Bucs element. And no smart alecks, it’s not the over/under for Jameis throwing picks. Rather, it’s how many starts will Jameis have. BSPN throws out the number 14.5 starts and Jenna Laine of ESPN shared her view.

Over/under 14.5 starts for quarterback Jameis Winston?

Over. Before last season’s three-game suspension and the three games he missed because of an injury in 2017, Winston started 45 consecutive games (2014 at Florida State, 2015-2016 in the NFL). The one issue he could run into is the fact the Bucs didn’t make any significant upgrades to their offensive line and coach Bruce Arians is known for utilizing an empty backfield and attacking deep downfield, meaning there’s no running back to pick up an extra blitzer, often subjecting the quarterback to more hits.

Laine’s last sentence is what stood out to Joe. Jameis, folks may remember, hasn’t started 14 or more games since 2016. In 2017, he hurt his shoulder. Last year, Jameis had to deal with his sentence from NFL strongman Roger Goodell for his hassle with an Uber driver and then got benched by former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter.

The way quarterbacks get pounded in Arians’ offense, Joe is going to take a stab and suggest Jameis’ start total will be under — but not by much. Maybe a half-game.

It is going to be every game unless Jamies gets hurt. Regardless, espn is awful.

  2. T REX Says:

LOL. Unless Winston gets hurt? That’s the point.

  3. Allbuccedup Says:

No QB if Jameis gets hurt.

  4. Defense Rules Says:

Wonder what the over/under is on the Bucs selling out every home game this year. I’m guessing it’ll be about the same as Jameis starting and finishing every game this year.

Of course, that’d change drastically IF the Bucs act to actually improve our OLine before the season starts.

  5. 813bucboi Says:

he’ll start every game…..he’s packing on weight because he knows he’s going to take some hits….

he’ll get out of the pocket and protect himself when he scrambles….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  6. Allbuccedup Says:

Blaine Gabbert 48 TDs 47 INTs and 32 FUMBLES in career. The other QB who I don’t even remember his name has never taken a snap during the regular season. Hopefully Jay Miss won’t get hurt.

  7. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“the Bucs didn’t make any significant upgrades to their offensive line” – ESPN QUOTE

Actually, they did. Alex Cappa. It just isn’t proven on the field (yet), but it will be.

Caleb won’t last long at RT though. Leidke will take over there. Then all will be good.

  8. Greg Says:

Do you possible suspension count? I’ll take the under

  9. Joe Says:

“the Bucs didn’t make any significant upgrades to their offensive line”

    Actually, they did. Alex Cappa.

    Actually, they did not.

Cappa was/is not a “significant” upgrade. First, he was already on the roster. Second, if the Bucs are banking on a biker bar bouncer who couldn’t unseat Caleb Benenoch, this team is in a world of trouble.

The only thing “significant” about Cappa is how long it’s been since he walked into a barber shop.

  10. OL Says:

Hes going to be ok.J bo.really going hace a good season.go bucs

  11. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Jenna Laine is too much of a lap dawg reporter for jason licht & the bucs

  12. Allbuccedup Says:

Alex Cappa will get cut at the end of preseason.

  13. Marine Buc Says:

I refuse to watch ESPN. After watching every day for about 35 years. They got bought by Disney, hired trolls like Jamile Hill and turned into CNN… I’m done and will never go back.

  14. Lord Cornelius Says:

It’s a crime we didn’t invest in another interior OL…

Alex Cappa = a “?” at best. But there is no reason to write him off either.

OL is huge on technique / leverage / etc / more so than anything. If he’s a willing learner who has had good coaching there is no knowing where he is at at this point in 2019 vs whatever the 2018 coaching staff thought (who sucked at evaluating and developing O-line and stuck with Benecoch way too long)

LT-Donavon Smith – should be top 16-20 LT with upside for better
LG-Ali Marpet – has top 5 LG potential but should be top 16 easy
C-Ryan Jensen – has had seasons as a top 5-10 Center before last year
    RG-?????
RT-Demar Dotson – solid vet if healthy – always grades out as average at worst and some years our best lineman

The problem with this line is at RG & in depth / future at RT due to Dotson’s age but we are pretty set at the other 3 positions. If Jensen’s play doesn’t come back to top 5-10 form then he’ll be gone.

  15. Allbuccedup Says:

ESPN never mentions the bucs at all. The only time they have mentioned them it last about 10 seconds and usually its got McCoy in the conversation.

  16. BrianBucs Says:

When Winston is getting hit that’s when he starts to throw more picks and makes more bonehead plays. Hopefully Arians will see that and make offensive adjustments

  17. Magadude Says:

Jenna too often speaks the obvious, but having a longer and farther reach than any other Bucs reporter (ESPN alone is as huge as it is awful) keeps her seat by the door and guarantees she gets heard. As for Winston, it only takes one hit. One of Winston’s good points is his ability to extend plays, but it may prove costly. It only takes one hit. I worry about his blind side as that is also where the OL is the weakest.

  18. Magadude Says:

@DefenseRules…I bet Winston has a better chance of starting ALL 16 games (the good part) than the chances the Bucs have of selling more than ONE game (bad part). We know NYG will be a sellout for the wrong reasons.

  19. wausa Says:

    Im with you Marine Buc:

I will watch a game on ESPN, but I quit watching any of their shows when they became extremely political.

  20. Jean Lafitte Says:

Alex Cappa is not a guard. Trying to stick him there is square peg round hole. We need another RG or go with Liedtke, who is a natural guard.

he’ll start every game…..he’s packing on weight because he knows he’s going to take some hits….

That’s what Leftwich is teaching him; how to take hits! LOL

  22. Miller5252 Says:

What a game that was when Winston got hurt last. Arizona, one of the few games the family gets to watch in person because it’s close…. Winston went down and AP first game as a Cardinal and rushed for like 220 yards that game! Nothing like driving 10hrs one way to see a game the Bucs should win get run out of Arizona! Good times!!

  23. tickrdr Says:

    Some wag might point out:
    JW3 last two years 6 – 16 = 0.273 winning percentage.
    The other QB 4 – 6 = 0.400 winning percentage.
    So, there’s that.

    tickrdr

  24. Tval Says:

Same can be said for FOLES/WENTZ @ tickrdr. And the Eagles messed that up. The bucs got this rightn You’d DESTROY each team 😂😂🙈🙈

  25. Pickgrin Says:

A lot is riding on BAs belief that the Bucs OLine as inherited will be fine with better scheming and better coaching.

The play and current capabilities of starting RG prospects – FA Watford, Cappa and Liedtke – will be closely monitored during training camp.

OG and OT positions are definite possibilities for bringing in a cap casualty veteran after final cuts in early Sept – depending on how the above 3 (along with Benenoch) are looking to the coaches eye at that point… and also whether Evan Smith is healthy or not.

  26. Allbuccedup Says:

If Alex Cappa is not a guard what is he doing on the team.

  27. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Allbuccedup

Alex Cappa is a project. The Bucs are hopeful he will be able to play both Guard and Tackle. Just like having a Center who can also play Guard (like Evans). As the season rolls along and injuries mount it is wise to have a few versatile players on your roster. Especially offensive lineman…

  28. Pittsshore Says:

Great news on JW from Bleacher Report, headline: Jameis Winston Is a Major Bust, and the Bucs Must Move on from 2015 No. 1 Pick

  29. Pittsshore Says:

    Sound Familiar:

The following are the listed weaknesses from Winston’s predraft profile by NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein:

“Decision making not consistent with his football intelligence. Will throw into impossible windows rather than taking safe throw underneath. Elongated windup and release allows instinctive defenders to close on throws. Was too easily baited into dangerous throws. Struggled with intermediate passing game in 2014, completing 56.8 percent of his passes with FBS-leading 11 interceptions in that range. Still learning nuances of position and how to move and hold defenders with his eyes. Would sleepwalk through first half of many games. Inconsistent footwork and weight transfer caused balls to sail. Prone to emotional outbursts on field. Quality of decision-making drops off substantially when pocket becomes turbulent and he’s forced to leave it. Lacks athleticism to extend plays for very long outside of the pocket. Off-the-field character and ability to lead on NFL level are his primary obstacles, according to NFL evaluators.”

  30. Pittsshore Says:

This will tell you who JW is and how his entitlement ruins programs.

  31. Magadude Says:

@Pitsshore, dangerously accruate to say the least. I will say in four years he’s improved in just one thing: “Lacks athleticism to extend plays for very long outside of the pocket.” He’s not the fastest guy, not the most accurate, but he’s not afraid to try to make every opportunity work. USUALLY that is good. Other times he’s well….

  32. Tye Says:

None of Jimbo Fishers QBs lived up to pro quality… W is no better… The sooner the bucs realize he is a waste of time, the closer they will move to a winning future finally finding that true talent at the pro level… Any Lobbying to resign him a those who would rather continue losing with him than to ever see this team win without him…
His buc career writing it’s final chapter!

  33. BucFan727 Says:

Dont give me that crap a player couldn’t unseat another. You mean like when they ran Martin when you know and I know he wasnt effective. And Barber should of started. Those coaches where garbage Joe. You give Koeter to much credit. Thinking he new the right player to play.

  34. BucFan727 Says:

Jamie’s Americas Quarterback Winston is the Bucs QB. YOU GOT TO LOVE IT!
    Thats my FYdking Quarterback!
You haters can go BUC yourself!

  35. BucFan727 Says:

Delusional trolls think Winston isnt going to be a Buc. 😆 lol.
    Whos Winston play for?
    Ya that’s right. The Bucs.
