“There Is Definitely More Risk With Ndamukong Suh”

May 28th, 2019

Upgrade, says former Bucs QB.

Interesting back-and-forth between a former Bucs quarterback and one of the most influential men in the NFL world.

That would be former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms and the creator, curator, and overall guru of ProFootballTalk.com, the great Mike Florio.

Last week on a broadcast edition of “PFT Live,” seen by intelligent football fans weekdays on NBC Sports Network, the virtual flipping of former Bucs stud Gerald McCoy for Ndamukong Suh led the broadcast (a Bucs’ segment leading off the broadcast of PFT Live may happen once every two years).

The two co-hosts were puzzled by the move. Florio seemed to think the Bucs were better off with GMC while Simms, also confused by the move, thinks Suh could be a better option but also mentioned he’s much more of a high-wire act than GMC.

“There is definitely more risk with Ndamukong Suh and his history,” Sims said. “Gerald McCoy has a track record of being a team guy, a great guy. Ndamukong Suh? Sure, we all know the play wasn’t as good as it should have been during the regular season last year. Playoffs came around and he turned on the switch. He dominated [in the playoffs]. What guy are you going to get?”

As for GMC having 10 suitors willing to pay him top dollar, Florio was big-time dubious of that claim, strongly hinting GMC’s agent played someone who taps on a keyboard for a living.

“If there were 10 teams interested in Gerald McCoy, why the hell weren’t the Buccaneers able to trade him?” Florio asked.

Florio also added the signing of Suh proves the Bucs are in a win-now mentality.

“There is a definite all-in vibe down there in Tampa.”

    “Win-now vibe”

    4-12

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

“an all in vibe it Tampa”!!!!!!!!!

Maybe for the #1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Allbuccedup Says:

5-11 becomes a habit. BA considers retirement. Jason ” not very” Licht goes dumpster diving to find new coach. Glazers show no concern trying to get money from measles epidemic in Florida cause for low attendance.

  4. Lazy Animations Says:

Even national media is calling Stroud an idiot lol

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Great episode.

    And I agree.

  6. 813bucboi Says:

suh paced himself during the regular season…..when the rams needed him he stepped up and thats all that counts….

the “risk” was bigger with GMC….his history of injury combined with his history of losing made it an easy decision…..

i’d rather have VV & terry beckner learn and play like suh vs learning and playing like GMC….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  7. 813bucboi Says:

    4-12…5-11….lol…

yall do realize we have BA running the show and not dirk…lol…

what makes yall think we’ll have another losing season?…..

we’ll win at least 5games based on talent, 4games with coaching and 1 with some luck….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    According to PR:
Tampa Bay and an undisclosed team were very close to a trade deal that would have sent McCoy to that team for a draft pick or picks, but the deal fell through in the 11th hour.

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    It was not the Browns.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If JPP cannot play, his salary will not count against the cap, right?

So use that money to resign McCoy for the same amount Suh is getting, cut a couple useless players and boom…we’ll have a top pass rushing team.

  11. DB55 Says:

    Risk? Here’s your risk.

said one NFC pro scouting director. “He (McCoy) struggles when he has to play square to the line of scrimmage, which leads to him losing his gap more than you would like.”

Translation: dude couldn’t defend his gap for nothing. Teams ran right at him over and over again. Other than a meaningless 2nd qrt sack every third game the dude was useless, that’s why no team wanted to trade for him and it will be a surprise if he gets more than 5-6 mil on the open market.

  12. Couch Fan Says:

I wish people would quit saying GMC is a team guy. While more and more info that slowly comes out, its quite clear that GMC is not the team guy so many fan boys claimed. Its like they are needlessly holding on to these lies because they cant handle the truth. Yes. Risk comes with Sun. Risk came with McCoy. We seen 10 years of risk with McCoy that resulted in terrible Dline play. At least Suh’s risk comes with a chance of a higher reward than we’ve ever got from McCoy.

  13. Couch Fan Says:

Yes, risk comes with Suh. **

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

So IF you believe all the stuff about Suh taking it easy during the regular season and then really turning it on during the playoffs…

So freaking what? Think about this for a second. The Rams did not need Suh to be great during the season…they simply rolled…it was clear they were a playoff team very, very early in the season…what was left to play for…a bigger contract? Personal glory? The Rams did not need him in the regular season..when they needed him he showed up!

Yesterday was an epiphany for me….perhaps I’m way off base but Suh comes across as an incredibly grounded human being who has more money than he needs and is a savvy investor..he can take his stash and just keep it growing. He doesn’t seem to care what people think of him and he’s not the guy who wants personal glory.

Suh and White are going to truly revitalize this defense. White all the time…and Suh when we actually need it.

  15. Stanglassman Says:

McCoys already been offered 11m. But that’s not 13 and that’s why no team would trade for him.

  16. BringBucsBack Says:

Florio said he’d rather have GMC at 13 mil than Sue at 9.5? This guy clearly only looks at stat sheets, namely sacks and the nice-o-meter. They also mentioned nothing about our cap situation. Watch some dang games!

  17. Bird Says:

No one would trade for him cause not one team in the NFL thought he was worth 13 mil and knew the Bucs would not pay as well.

Everyone knows he would be released unless Bucs honored the contract which no team thought the Bucs would do. Especially when head coach was saying he wasn’t the same player he was a few years ago.

Captain obvious even saw the release coming months ago.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Couch Fan … I agree with you that GMC wasn’t the team guy that media folks seem to think. As long as he was the ‘focus’ of the Bucs defense, then Yes, he played hard for his $13 mil. But his play was obviously slipping, and as soon as it became obvious to him that he’d no longer be ‘the focus’ of the D, team player went out the window. Personally don’t see Suh as being ‘a risk’ … I believe he’ll do just fine in Todd Bowles defense. The national media types need something to talk about right now I guess, but neither Simms nor Florio is correct on this one IMO. Suh will be a MUCH BETTER FIT for this new defensive scheme.

  19. adam from ny Says:

best thing for mccoy is suh getting 9-10 mil…

with mccoy being a little worse he should somehow scrape up 8-9 mil on the open market…

rather than the 6-7 he was going to have to settle for…

he should thank suh and invite him over to the batcave and order the 2 of them a deluxe sushi boat meal…

then suh should get real wild and trash the entire mancave…and rampage out the house claiming he went “all hulk on batman”

  20. adam from ny Says:

people would love if suh trashed the batcave

    #HulkOverBatMan

  21. Couch Fan Says:

I completely agree Defense Rules. Though I will say judging from our history, any Free agent is a risk with this team. But im being trying to be hopeful as now have a proven winner, 2x coach of the year leading the team.

  22. Snook Says:

McCoy was owed $13M this year, $10M in 2020 and $10.5M in 2021.

THAT’S why no one wanted to trade for him.

Oh — and the $11M he’s already been offered? That’s BS agent talk.

He’s been to the Browns and that’s it. He didn’t like their number so now he’s at home pouting.

ONE time First Team All-Pro. Thinks he God’s gift to DTs.

  23. Concerned Oneyed buc Says:

BA or BS where is the big splash? I hope they don’t think this team where they stand now is going to win more than 5 or 6 games. Everyone’s a super bowl winner in the preseason.

  24. Bucamania Says:

At least Suh can dominate when he wants to. GMC never takes over a game. Ever.

  25. stpetebucsfan Says:

“Everyone’s a super bowl winner in the preseason.”

Take your point Concerned but I would make one small edit.

Everyone “should” be a Super Bowl winner in preseason otherwise why bother showing up? And everyone “should” be a winner with their own fans.

I get that you view positive people here as cockeyed optimists but this is a blog where everyone is NOT a winner in the preseason.

According to about half of our posters the Bucs are losers in 2019 before we ever play the first down. Sad really.

  26. Slugglife Says:

Offense alone won us 5 games. If we can just have a mediocre defense, we’ll be battling for the division.

  27. Oregonbucsfan Says:

“There is a definite all-in vibe down there in Tampa.”

Right! That’s the same vibe we get at this time each year. From Shiano, from Lovie, from Koetter, etc. 3-4 wins if they are lucky.

  28. chopshopp Says:

The Bucs couldn’t trade GMC because nobody wanted his 13M Salary and the Bucs laid their hand down by being non-committal on his return/BA evaluation. Is it really that difficult to understand that concept?

Why would I trade for someone and give up something when I can play the waiting game and sign him to a smaller deal without losing collateral? There’s hardly ANY team that is waiting for Gerald McCoy to take them to the Super Bowl. He’s not going to take any team over the top, but he definitely is a decent DT for a team with a hole or money to spend in the hopes that the new surroundings resurrect some sort of a career that a 3rd overall pick should be.

The Suh we will get is the cash-it-in Suh. He liked Florida for no personal income tax. That’s already been stated. Also, we are not a playoff team, he won’t have to turn it on. Either the coaches challenge his ego to be the leader of the DL or this is going to go very badly with a lazy Swaggy-esque ending.

  29. Jean Lafitte Says:

You could easily make the argument that Suh made Aaron Donald better last season.

Before Suh’s arrival Aaron Donald averaged 9.5 sacks a season.
Last season with Suh at NT, AD had 20.5 sacks. That is huge, especially if this season AD comes back to his average of 9.5 sacks. It will be proof that AD was better with Suh’s presence. It’s too bad about JPP, it’s looks as though he may had a chance to have a career year with Suh and Vea at NT.

Can we actually make the argument that GMC made anyone better?

  30. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

Chris Simms is so smart. He’ll make a great GM someday!

  31. Lord Cornelius Says:

Suh was still solid in the regular season last year lol..

Per PFF it was his 3rd best season in 9 years and he played the 3rd most snaps of any DT…

If he plays as good as he did in 2018 we got a steal for the $$. He was worth at least $15M for what he did last year.

  32. NOSBOS Says:

What Lafitte said. And I expect him to have a similar affect on Vea,I feel this move was Taylor-made for.

  33. Allbuccedup Says:

Stpete old habits are hard to break after the Brown’s make the playoffs the buc s will be #1.

  34. gotbbucs Says:

What risk? This team has been the laughing stock of the NFL for most of the last “lost” decade. Nothing is a risk in this position. They’ve averaged like 4 wins a year since 2008, McCoy wasnt adding anything to the W’s side of the win-loss. Suh might not either, but they have to try something.

So Suh might be an asshole that takes plays off, and the team loses. McCoy is a swell fella that gets easily taken out of his gap on running downs, and the team loses. Where’s the risk?

They risk possibly getting better, because they cant get much worse. The bigger risk is trotting the same group out there and expecting different results.

  35. Eric Says:

We dang sure don’t want a guy dominating in the playoffs, helping get to the big dance.

    Oh the horror.

  36. Doctor Stroud Says:

Signing Suh was a short term move just to get through the year. For the coaching staff, the idea was to light a fire under the team. For Licht, it was cap relief. For ownership, it was a signing not to lose face in order to get fans to buy tickets. I’m just surprised Team Glazer didn’t sign GMC to an extension first and then fire him. Maybe they are growing as people. Then again, next year, there might be plenty of people to pay not to play, coach, or manage. #PaidFloridaVacation

  37. pick6 Says:

McCoy’s legendary get-off also came along with a decent number of offsides penalties. different situation and often less destructive but a salient point….to get what you crave out of either guy you have to be willing to tolerate them pushing that edge too far on occasion

  38. BigMacAttack Says:

McCoy was quicker to get blocked and then blown out, than any DT in the league. Quick first step, slow second step, couldn’t stay low, lost leverage constantly, followed by no closing speed whatsoever. Weak upper body. Soft fat gut, goofy, too nice, not smart. GTFOHGMC!!! Seeya!

  39. BigMacAttack Says:

GMC will never be great and never be voted to the long list for HOF. He was a bust from day 1. So many were blind to this. He has 1-2 good plays per game. He has at least 10 bad plays. The rest he’s not even noticeable or laying on the ground after getting blown up. Buyers remorse is coming for his new team.

  40. gotbbucs Says:

….and now McCoy has chosen to become a vegan. I cant imagine that working out very well for him, or any big time athlete. That diet basically killed Arian Foster’s career.

  41. Barbosa Says:

No risk here. Make more changes on defense. These last two years are not just bad they are Historically awful. I do not understand why fans have been obsessing over Winston and the offense when it’s really the defense that keeps the Bucs firmly in buccaneer cove.

  42. Jeffbuc Says:

Do you people understand how a free agent works. They get to choose the team. So you keep saying all the teams new gmc would get released and they would just sign him for a couple million cheaper. That’s not how it works 10 teams want him and only one get him. So if you really want him you pay the extra 2 million and a 7th rd pick to ensure you get him. So evidentially no one wanted him bad enough to even give up a 7th round pick to ensure they get him. So in other words he is not wanted by many teams at a high salary. That’s why the 11 million and ten teams was put out so quick by his agent. Half the teams supposedly interested don’t even have 8 million to sign him.
