Ronde Barber: “There’s Not A Lot Of Talent On This Football Team”

May 8th, 2019

“Jason, I may have thrown you under a bus.”

Some folks think Joe trends too negative after back-to-back 5-11 seasons and a questionable 2019 draft and free agency class.

Well, Buccaneers icon Ronde Barber appears more down than Joe.

Barber, this year’s Buccaneers Ring of Honor selection, was talking to a national audience yesterday on CBS Sports Radio and was asked about Gerald McCoy and the state of the Bucs.

Barber wants to see McCoy back for 2019, though he agrees with Bucco Bruce Arians in that McCoy isn’t the player he was four years ago.

“Gerald is an icon here; he will be in the Ring of Honor for the Buccaneers one day,” Barber said. “If you ask me personally, I’d love to see him here [in 2019]. There’s a need. There’s not a lot of talent on this football team. They’re young. A lot of them don’t get it. I don’t know why you would let a player like that go.”

Man, so Barber thinks the Bucs are seriously lacking in talent and football maturity.

Heck, Joe thinks the Bucs actually have solid talent and there’s a lot of room for fast improvement if the defensive coaching staff is indeed better than the last one.

To hear Barber say the Bucs are lacking talent and are high on players who don’t get it is deflating and discouraging. This is a super smart football guy who loves the Bucs, attends practice, and is extremely well connected in the organization, in addition to his duties as a FOX broadcast analyst exposing him to the behind-the-scenes happenings of most NFC teams.

    sounds like BS to me….

so if GMC returns, then we have talent?….lol….

talent is there….coaching is finally here….

the last piece to the puzzle is a competent GM….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  3. Lamarcus Says:

Ronde did not say “bad talent”. He said not a lot of talent.

Anyways Ronde said before we had talent and we still lost. So he says we are not that talented this time around…… I’m betting the opposite. 11-5

  4. adambomb418 Says:

Maybe we need to get Rhonde out of the front offices?!?!

  5. OldManBA Says:

2-14 this season, with the 1st pick in the 2020 NFL Draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select….

  6. DooshLaRue Says:

I like Ronde, but didn’t he declare that we had al lot of talent a couple of years ago and thought we would do well?

    We didn’t.

  7. The Buc Realist Says:

One of the Bucs Great comming in and speaking the truth!!!!!!!! The great Rhonde Barber preaching the word of truth, but will fall on deaf ears of the sheep!!!!!!!!!!!

Its not shocking at all!!!!! What is????? are the sheep that will not “realize” these facts until games are played out!!!!!!!! But not after several games of the sheep in shock and not understanding what just happened!!!!!!!!!! The worst might be ole coach stale biscuit that was brought in to fix crash test dummy winston!!!!!!!!!!! hopefully team glazers will get clue and in the name of national recognition will fire super jameis osborne out of a cannon at half time thru the goal post from the 40 yard line just to have something interesting happen at RJS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a long year this will be, with all the talk of a full rebuild!!!!!!! Get your GM lists out joe!!!!!!!!!!! Get out the scouts for QB for that top 3 overall pick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. ATrain Says:

Ronde like many Fans is speaking from the heart
    He likes GMC

    GMC has talent NO DOUBT

But he lacks a DRIVE TO WIN

NO I don’t mean stomp people or act like a Donkey

I mean He doesn’t care if the team loses. As a leader or even veteran who is held as one of the BEST PLAYERS there should be some emotion other than laughing or dancing when the team loses

  9. pelbuc Says:

RB is very intelligent and plugged into OBP. If he say a lot of players “don’t get it,” he sees what we’ve all seen from Lichet’s picks, either in the draft or FA. Most players are badly coached and don’t have the motivation needed. Coupled with cancers like Baker, Djax and others, it makes for a losing recipe with no accountability.

  10. THETRUTH Says:

What you mean a football Icon and player said McCoy is good as many coaches and players have said. You mean these buc fans on this site are more intelligent then barber who think McCoy sucks and couch GMs. Now you heard it from one of your own that actually played the sport so learn something fans he (McCoy ) makes a difference. Maybe if Alstott says it other will then believe it

Not saying he is great but teams gotta prepare go him.

  11. AceOfAerospace Says:

Even though he said there’s not a lot of talent on this football team, I took it to mean there’s not a lot of talent on this defensive line sine he was talking specifically about McCoy. And that would be a true statement. I could be wrong though.

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

I wonder when the reveal his name for the ROH if it will read Rhonde Bharber.

  13. Sport Says:

Hah! This is laughable. All you GMC Haters would have roasted Ronde if this site were around then. He didn’t do squat early on and got roasted plenty on the field. He wasn’t fast, not particularly strong and lacked height and length. Guess what coaching, hard work and smarts did….got his ass in the Ring of Honor.

I guess we should also mention playing alongside multiple HOF’rs and that he perfected a role in defensive system. Put Ronde on an island, he would have been roasted on the regular, why? Because he lacked physical gifts.

He would be equivalent to the Ryan Smith bashing if he played here today.

  14. Ndog Says:

I love hearing garbage like this yet they say the Browns are sooooo talented. So they have OBJ we have Evans, they have Landry we have Godwin, they have Njoke we have OJ, they have Mayfield we have Jameis, they have Garrett wr have JPP (hopefully), they have Richardson we have Vea they have young corners with potential we have your corners with potential, they have garbage at LBs we have LVD and the #5 overall pick. Lastly they have a rookie head coach who was an OC for like 5 minutes in the league while we have the 2 time NFL coach of the year.

Yet they are the talk of the league and we “don’t have much talent”. You see what you want to see…..

  15. AwShbucs Says:

Think he may have been talking about the Dline mostly but also the overall youth/ unproven players on defense as a whole.

You’d be hard pressed to say the offense is lacking for talent outside maybe 3 positions. RG, RT and RB. But I already know Barber and Bruce Anderson are going to prove a lot of people wrong about our Rbs.

I have hope for Cappa but I ain’t holding my breath.

  16. Chris Simms 2020 GM Says:

Funny thing about being selected to the Ring of Honor, it gives you job security for this year at least.

This year Rohndey has the luxury of telling the truth about this Gumpster fire.

Now the question is, who will be left standing next year? Rohndey or Gump?

  17. Buccs99 Says:

He’s not wrong. JPP possibly out for the year. Talk of McCoy going. We are talking (defensively here) a DL with a browns castaway that we snagged up last year, a second year 1st round pick, and guys that have not made a splash on this team. Linebackers outside of Lavonte David ? a bunch of rookies and free agents that were more puzzle pieces than stars. a secondary that HAS to be the youngest in all of the NFL. we have a team full of potential. not talent. least not talent thats been shown on the field yet.

  18. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

Which option would “history” more favorably look back on licht weight’s tenure!!!!!

1.) should he just resign this week and disappear for failing the Buc’s organization in every facet???????

2.) Or should he declare the offseason a total disaster and hold a fire sale on the roster, then declare a full rebuild for the upcoming 2020 season!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Destinjohnny Says:

We do a a few nice pieces for sure >but overall…..5-11 talent

  20. D-Rome Says:

Ronde has been spot on for the most part when it comes to the analysis of this team and the players that have played for this team. Ronde doesn’t drink the Kool-Aid like many of the commenters have on here. This is not a very good football team as currently constructed and if you think a coaching staff will work miracles with *this* team then you need to have your head examined.

    6-10 or worse.

  21. miken Says:

plenty of talent on O.OnD, unfortunately, we just have a bunch of Jason’s draft picks. Need to cut JPP and keep GMC if you can get out of paying JPP. He will not be the same player this year and we weren’t keeping him past this year anyways.

  22. DB55 Says:

    @thetruth

Barber is unimpressed by the 2017 Bucs when it comes to defining individuals, or the team as a whole, as “badass.”

“Nobody like that jumps out on today’s Bucs. They’re not there. I would say the quarterback (Jameis Winston) fits the mold. He is clearly that guy, the leader,” Barber said.

“But you see an attitude emerging, especially at linebacker. Those two guys, Lavonte (David) and Kwon (Alexander) have to be able to drive the bus, especially Kwon, because he has so much energy. If he can consistently be that guy, it will raise the defense. I love Gerald (McCoy), but for a defensive tackle to drive a team, he has to have a huge personality. I mean like the personality of (Warren) Sapp or a John Randle.

  23. Alanbucsfan Says:

“The talent’s not the issue. Ain’t no team in the league got better talent than this,” Arians said. “I’m too old to rebuild.

    – Bruce Arians

  24. BucEmUp Says:

OH GOD SOMEONE GET REALIST A TOWEL SOMEONE ACTUALLY AFREES WITH HIM!!!

  25. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    He’s not wrong

QB- Talent, just isn’t able to play consistently well and be the reason the Bucs win

RB-Lacking talent, if Barber gets hurt they are screwed

WR-Strength of the team as Evans is a top 10 WR in the game but after him Godwin, Perriman and the rest are question marks as consistent contributors

TE-Not sure, talented? Sure. But haven’t lived up to their potential due to injuries

OL-3 of the 5 projected starters are overpaid for at best average play. Right side is a HUGE liability

Defense is devoid of proven NFL talent outside of Lavonte David who is getting older. Lot of young draft picks need to step up on this side of the ball. This assessment can change depending on JPP’s neck and if GMC stays.

  26. Tye Says:

The lack of talent on this Bucs team should be a huge concern to those who want to see this team actually win more than lose games…. This pretending all these guys are talented and not facing reality when they continue to lose is the reason for the losing culture, n the locker room and among the fan base…

NO DOUBT many will be disappointed at the end of this season… Especially those who refuse to see or acknowledge much of this team does not match up to the talent of the other 3 NFCS teams much less the NFC or the rest of the league…

If anything, the Bucs are the ‘LOSING’ Browns of the NFC!

  27. Waterboy Says:

I agree with Rhonde but how are they in cap trouble with a team that’s not very talented? Something’s not adding up.

  28. DB55 Says:

    @ndog

they have young corners with potential we have your corners with potential,
    —————-
Ward was good enough to lock down Djax last year even stripping him of a TD catch and holding him to 2 catches on 4 targets for 25 yards. Greedy will probably perform just as well.

I’m not sure that any of our corners could lock down djax like that but wtfdik

  29. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

I have been advocating for ronde to be the bucs gm since lycnh became gm in SF, There is NO WAY he can do any worse than the 2 suits that have been running this team. Licht and Dom are aguably the 2 worst GMs in NFL history and the record proves that. Let Ronde tear it down and build it back up. This may be too far gone of a franchise to hand to ronde and may need a dorseylike or scot peoli or a prove gm/president like rich mckay to be the vision to rebuild this team

  30. Steven007 Says:

Ndog spinning facts.listen, clearly Barber made that comment in the context of wanting GMC on the team. Let’s not over blow this.

  31. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Ndog, the browns talent is so far superior than what the bucs have. Only ME could play on the borwns, not one of our WR aside from ME, would make the depth chart. Not one of our players on defense could play for the browns aside from Devin White. Then you have a 3 deep RB group that again not one RB of the bucs could make the browns…that is why the browns will be 10-6 and in the playoffs this year and the bucs will be lucky to sniff 5-11 AGAIN

  32. NPRSageBoy Says:

Time to plant the magic beans and pray for a miracle. Back to back 5-11 seasons validates Ronde’s statement about lack of talent. Good coaching or not, talent will always shine and that’s just NOT the case with this Buc team.
I just hope Arian’s health can survive the $hitstorm that will be this season.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

Who are these sheep Realist is always talking about?

    I never see any.

  34. Steven007 Says:

Dusthy, that’s simply not true. I don’t want to overstate coaching, but no one on this team has been coached like they’re about to be. let’s wait and see what the results are before resorting to Doom and gloom.

  35. Mike Johnson Says:

NPR- I fear no magic beans will help this team. The hype of new coaching staff will fade away. Just like Lovie and Koetter did. Rhonde is right. This team has talent. Just not a lot of it. Especially on the defensive side. McCoy might not be the greatest. But he is a bonafide baller. This team..I hate to say it..might put Arians Heart and health back at risk. Again, we shall see. All is not completely lost..Not yet at least. Bucs are not handling the GMC situation properly and thats on our ..Should have been swept out the door with Koetter GM….Jason Licht.

  36. John5 Says:

Has Ronde ever been a fan of the Bucs? Every time he is commentating on a game, he is constantly bashing the team and pointing out all the faults. He rarely says anything positive at all.

  37. cmurda Says:

Licht better hope that Ronde is wrong. Unfortunately, I don’t think Ronde is wrong. This is an indictment on Licht too. You have a team that is in cap hell and the talent is lacking. Licht’s future? Uh-oh. This, on the heels, of some questionable decisions in the draft including selecting a kicker in the draft….again. Passing on Greedy for Sean Bunting. Passing on Josh Allen for Devin White. Keep in mind that Allen is perfectly built for the 3-4 seems to have generational pass rushing talent and as good as White is, his position carries less value than an elite pass rusher. I’m down on this draft. I feel like Licht again was over-thinking this and didn’t make the obvious selections that should have happened. I am salty. But, hey. I’m no different than DB55. wtfdik.

  38. cmurda Says:

@John5. Of course Ronde is a fan of the team. If he wasn’t, he might be the other way around. The fact of the matter is this team has done much more wrong than right. What do you expect Ronde to do? B.S. everybody and talk about how great your again 5-11 Buccaneers are. He points out the faults in hopes that someone is listening.

  39. Lord Cornelius Says:

At this point I’m guessing the “sheep” realist refers to are non JBF posters but just general random fans that are expecting a super bowl.

Would love to know who these people are.

EVeryone on this site for the most part is angry as h3ll about this team and what’s been going on and not many have high expectations.

    ………………………….

  40. bkyrdbob77 Says:

With our offense, all we need is a defense that is a little better than last year. We just need a little less sucky defense, and we may have it. Even with JPP out, our defense should still be at least a little better now that Smiths leprous fingers wont come into contact with the defense at all this year.

Subtracting JPP from the defense hurts, but I think that Bowles over Smith is an even greater positive for the entire defense. Our offensive line should be a little better this year with Warhop gone, and the line should have better cohesion after playing together last year. If the O line and the D are even just a bit less horrid, then our Offense should be able to win us more than 5 games. Evans, Godwin, Brate, and Howard are still going to be open here to catch everything that Winston gets close to them. I certainly do not think that we are going to the playoffs without JPP or a darn good replacement for him, especially with the schedule we have.

……is this a good time to bring up the White over Allen pick?

  41. TOM Says:

Where do I begin? First off if JPP is out for the year I would bring in a ton of FA & undrafted Dlinemen beginning with Ansah for tryouts. Since the Bucs are in cap hell, keeping GM is a long shot. Should never have signed (lazy ass) D. Smith to such a large contract. Its already coming back to bite them in the butt. The Bucs only have a few what I would call very talented players. Also I would check out Ajayi RB. Schraeder OT, Shelton DT, Remmers G, Wiesnieski G. Now some may be to costly. But some like Ansah coming off injuries would be relatively cheap. One things for sure they need a lot of help.

  42. Pete I Says:

NDOG is a sheep that Realist refers too

  43. Ndog Says:

Maybe I’m wrong but didn’t we beat the Browns last year even with our kicker missing a chip shot in the 4th quarter? But they are sooooo good. Yeah I thought so, next clueless poster please.

    ——————–

Soooooo we have talent and we have coaching but somehow the team was able to compile both of these without a GM… who somehow has an impact on the games on Sundays? You’re brilliant! It’s funny how some people contradict themselves in a span of two lines of a post.

  46. AJ Says:

Probably can pull up a quote from Ronde and a lot of people from this time last year. When they couldn’t say enough good things about the talent on this team. And how the Bucs would be ready for the next step. Freaking NFL changes every season. Where we improved most is with a professional, experienced coaching staff. From top to bottom, we can’t help but be better with a staff that has a clue. Especially on defensive side.

  47. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Ndog, i had a gold fish last year too so what does last year mean? The browns are loaded the bucs are in the basement and looking at 2-14

  48. Chuck in Upstate Says:

Regarding the talent vs coaching argument, do we think the Pats consistently have the beat talent every year? I don’t think so. But, they are always a favorite to be in the Super Bowl and to win it. Talent reaches its full potential when the thinking is gone and everyone knows their assignments. This season will determine if we have talent or not. Because the coaching staff is a proven winner.

  52. Jim Says:

Who can argue with Barber? Their record speaks for itself. An analyst is going make the obvious call. Not too many go out on a limb. They follow the herd and I don’t mean Cowheard

  53. DRFEELGOOD Says:

Didn’t Ronde say last year in the preseason that we had a very talented team? Love Ronde, but we have talent (not Super Bowl level obviously) but not 5-11 either. MUCH better coaching should make the defense at least top 20, which would do wonders for the offense. Playing press corners last year 10 yards off the ball made me wanna puke every week.
