Roller Coaster Finally Stops For Blaine Gabbert

May 30th, 2019

Bucs backup QB Blaine Gabbert

If America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, can’t answer the bell this season, the Buccaneers’ hopes will rest on the arm of nine-year veteran QB Blaine Gabbert.

Joe caught up with Gabbert for an extended conversation and one very telling nugget emerged.

The 2019 season represents the first time Gabbert, the No. 10 overall pick in 2011, will be in an offensive system for a second year. Back in 2017, he played for Bruce Arians in Arizona.

Think about that. Never before has Gabbert gotten a Year 2 in an offense. He’s 29 years old.

Drafted by the Jaguars in the lockout season of 2011, ex-Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter was Gabbert’s playcaller and Gabbert was thrown into the fire as a 21-year-old starter with a shortened offseason. He was just about doomed to fail. The Jaguars coaching staff was blown up after the season and again after the 2012 campaign.

In 2014, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh traded for him, and then Harbaugh quit after the season. Gabbert stayed with San Francisco for 2015. And you guessed it. They fired head coach Jim Tomsula and brought in Chip Kelly for 2016. Gabbert won the starting job for Kelly in 2016, but he was benched after five games for Colin Kaepernick.

Arians came calling in 2017, and then he retired after that season.

Gabbert landed in Tennessee last season to back up Marcus Mariota. The Titans thought Ryan Tannehill was a better option this year and Gabbert is with the Bucs.

So it’s no surprise that Joe found an extremely confident Gabbert, who is energized by spring practices with a familiar playbook and coaches.

No, Joe doesn’t think Gabbert can save the day if Jameis is lost. But Gabbert is a legitimate backup who has won multiple games in that role. Given his familiarity with the offense and the Bucs’ loaded receiving corps, the Bucs should get his best if they need it.

Joe will share more on Gabbert in the coming days.

I thought Ryan Griffin was already re-signed as a #2 QB.
Griffin is an experienced camp body. He turns 30 in November and has yet to take a regular-season snap. Not sure why anyone would think the Bucs would rely on him as a No. 2. –Joe

  2. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Joe, you talk as if Winston will “save the day”…..there’s an extreme lack of evidence that will ever consistently happen.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Is Ryan Griffin still on the team Joe? Haven’t read a single word about him thus far this year. Jameis, Gabbert & Fitzgerald seem to get all the press.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The price was right……but, the real question is Ryan Griffin……why have we used a roster spot for him for 3 years and he still isn’t the primary backup?……this seems to be a waste to me as it does to carry 3 QBs on the roster……seems like we should go with a rookie and put them on the PS.
The new offense for Griffin should be a good time to do this.

I have nothing against Ryan Griffin and think he has talent but wonder what we are doing with him.

” an extremely confident Gabbert, who is energized by spring practices with a familiar playbook and coaches.”

Uh-oh, this means jw3 will fold like a lawn chair if this is true!!!!!!!!!!!!! And what a waste for a great football mind, Tom Moore to be out there in that heat, having one on one’s with a qb that cannot relate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Hodad Says:

Griffen is as good as gone. Gabbert will be the back up, the rookie Fitz will make the team for special teams, and #3 Q.B..

  10. Magadude Says:

For Gabbert to “save the day” we’d have to assume the day is not already lost with Winston and company. I would agree it’s never good to change systems often as a QB, but I’m not sure Gabbert’s skills are good enough anyway. That said, if changing system impacts anyone negatively, Winston should is the one to watch–and he’s a turnover machine as is.

    Get some help, man.
Most of do not have a clue what you’re talking/writing about.
For a start, before you begin spouting out those rambling indiscernibles, think about trying to make a point.
It makes it so much more interesting for the reader …

Also, lose the “sheep” thing. Most of us count them. Apparently, you have a much closer relationship with them than we care to imagine …

Realist, you are spot on, if ppl pay attention, jameis said he got gun shy with how well fitzmagic did last year. Stale biscuit said there will be no comp for jameis but if #1 qb pick gabbert is making ppl notice he is decent then what?

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Duthsty Rhothdes

I’m not quite sure Jameis actually admitted that Fitz bothered him….I think BA attributed that to Winston’s problems…..
It may be true, but I don’t think Jameis said it publicly…..maybe to BA, though.

tampabayfan, you are probably right on that!!!

  18. DooshLaRue Says:

Come on now guys……. Jameis is the best QB to ever play for the Bucs.
Don’t let those massive turnover numbers fool you…or the immaturity….or the inaccuracies……..:. he is the Messiah.
We are so blessed to have him on our team

Just ask the experts and they will set you straight.

  19. T REX Says:

Arians flat out said he got rid of Fitzmagic because he didn’t want Winston looking over his fragile shoulder.

That really sounds like a franchise QB. He can’t even handle competition.

  20. SmoothBayRider Says:

This website is the only reason anybody that isn’t an FSU fan thinks Jameis is any good . When he gets benched , whether it be insubordination , or his propensity to throw it to the other team , what then ?

  21. tye Says:

When the inept, Blundering, cumbersome Winston takes his final snap with this team, the only positive about Blaine is that he is familiar with this system…

Being familiar with a system and executing it to great success is not a given!

  22. SkBucsfan Says:

I would rather roll with Griffin not Gabbert if Winston were to not be able to compete. Yeah over another 9 year never was NFL vet.

    Go Bucs!

Griffin over Gabbert?! Do you guys even read what you write?!
Griffin has played in ZERO regular season games. That’s nil, zero, nada, zip, goose-egg!

  29. Oneilbucs Says:

This fan base is trash . Yall hate Jamies so much yall will hate to see him play good. But don’t worry I can’t wait till Jamies leave this trash franchise and this trash fan base. The dude never had a good team around him but he supposed to play defense and running back and online. Just like McCoy if he go to the Panthers he is going to crush our trash offensive line. Jamies will go to a team with a pro bowl running back and a decent or good defense to support him and kill this team . Then yall will be saying that the bucs was stupid to them go . This fan base is a joke and this franchise is a joke none of yall know anything about football.

  30. Anthony Dickson Says:

I think Gabbert will be a good presence in the qb room, having played in both Koetter’s and Arian’s offenses, Winston and Gabbert can bounce things off each other and compare notes.

  31. Allbuccedup Says:

Next year Blake Bottles is a free agent. Maybe the QB whisper ought to sign him for a small fee and try to revive his career. Worth a try he’s making less than Gabbert right now.

  32. DooshLaRue Says:

    @Oneill

Ya know, just because some of us see JW’s shortcomings and freely point them out, doesn’t make us “haters”.

If Jameis does well I will support him.

I just have several concerns that keep me from being all-in with him as our starter.

Jameis has a golden opportunity to shut us “haters” up this season…. and I’ll be right here to congratulate him him if he does.

However, if we see more of the same and our defense improves, then guess what?

    Go Bucs!

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Gabbert has already shown he’s no good in game situations – it’s not like he’s lacked opportunities. I really hope this is in fact an open competition, and if it is, I really really hope that Griffin beats him out. 1) that would mean Griffin was actually better, and 2) rostering Gabbert seems like a complete waste of time.

  34. Jean Lafitte Says:

Griffin is as good as gone unless Gabbert suffers an injury because he has no practice squad eligibility left. Unless he can latch on with another club we all might get a chance in seeing him play in the XFL

    ^ Once a Freemanite, always a Freemanite!

Objective observation of QB play is more important than ever with the market value that a QB contract takes from the salary cap. Can’t pay top dollar for shoddy, inconsistent results.

As the former #1 overall pick, I hope he puts it all together this year: no dumb decisions on and off the field. It’s not just the turnovers, it’s the way they are accrued that hurts. A lot on stupid decisions.

    Don’t be a sheep!

  36. Oneilbucs Says:

Stevek that’s just what the national media tells yall. They push the quarterback position just to make them the hero on the field. So I know a lot of yall that really don’t know football that’s why yall believe what the national media says. Yall don’t see how bias they are. They say it’s all about the quarterback only when it comes to guys they don’t like when the team is bad. Look at Andrew Luck, Elie, Cousins, Stafford and many more it’s team for them but Jamies has to win even if the team is trash. I don’t know about being a sheep I just call it like I see it and not what the national media says. Yall are sheep’s to the national media. If you can’t run the ball and play good or decent defense you are going to lose. Quarterbacks is the most overrated position on the field. He depends on every body around him that includes the defense as well. Why the Packers miss the playoffs 2 years and a row? Rogers had 35 TDs and 5 interceptions and they still lost most of there games. Ain’t no quarterback is worth a 100 million dollars to me . The Patriots proved that last year they were a running team and they played good defense something Jamies has never had on this team. So stop being a sheep for the national media and go learn about football and then you will understand where I’m coming from.
