Prove-it Time Tier

May 17th, 2019

Ranking.

So how tight are the Bucs wedded to America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston?

Per Dan Graziano of BSPN, not real tight. Graziano decided to rank every starting quarterback in terms of job status. This includes age, skillset, salary, coach and general manager.

(For example, Graziano has Matty Ice as the most secure quarterback because he is still somewhat young and if the Dixie Chicks unloaded him, Matty Ice still has $68.9 million in guaranteed money coming his way).

Overall, Graziano has Jameis ranked No. 20 20th for job security, just behind Deshaun Watson.

On the “Prove-it now” tier, Graziano has Jameis just behind Jimmy GQ.

Tier: Prove-it time | Ranking in tier: T-No. 3

Contract: Fully guaranteed $20.922 million 2019 salary on the fifth-year option, exercised in April 2018, from his 2015 rookie deal.

I’m a Bruce Arians believer, so I’m predicting big things for Winston this season. But on the off chance ol’ Bruce can’t help Jameis solve his pesky problem of handing the ball to the opposing defense, the Bucs are free and clear after this season. As long as they don’t extend his contract in the meantime.

Yes, it would be easy to walk away from Jameis if he has a horrible year. But, then what? Would the Bucs be losing a coach and general manager, too? Bucco Bruce Arians has made it clear he is not interested in a rebuild and if you wave goodbye to your franchise quarterback, you are most certainly in a rebuild.

And as Joe has written, if Jameis implodes, why on earth would you bring back Byron Leftwich to, in theory, succeed Arians? If Jameis implodes, Leftwich will have failed with two young first-round pick quarterbacks in as many years.

Even if Jameis is mediocre and the Bucs somehow have a winning record, it would not shock Joe if the Bucs franchise Jameis for the 2020 season.

  1. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs has tied themselves to Jameis Winston

They have fired 2 coaching staffs (since he was drafted)
They haven’t drafted a QB (since drafting him)
They picked up his 5th year option

    All of the above

Because Jason Licht want to save himself

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

That is what happens when you give the under performing GM licht’s out a pass then hires coaches to fix his under performing draft picks, and the new coaches need better performing roster, but is tied to some of the untouchable roster picks of the terrible GM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    @Joe
When the truth is revealed and the season is lost, What are the chances that we can get Shawne Merriman to come do the “Lights out dance”!!!!!!!!!!!!! We will probably need him for game two!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How long???? Not Long!!!! Because what you reap!!! is what you SOW!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal the truth to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Succaneers Says:

I thought 2 years ago was a prove it year, and last year,,, hmmmmmm

  4. Hope for the bucs Says:

If he doesn’t improve on turnovers they should not resign. I don’t care how he does he has to make the pro bowl, to sign him to another contract.

  5. Dapostman Says:

Winston has improved completion % and pass yards per game every season. His final 6 games were the best stretch of his career in TD/INT ratio at 13/2 not counting 2 last play Hail Marys. I don’t understand the Winston may implode narrative. If he was going to implode wouldn’t he have done it the last 6 games after he was benched? Instead Winston improved and I expect him to improve more this year. Jameis Winston will have the best year yet and be rewarded with a new 5 year deal worth 23-25 million per season with a behavior clause in it. Bank on it Winston Derangement Syndrome simpletons.

  6. gotbbucs Says:

If you’re an NFL QB and you’re still trying to prove yourself in the 5th year as a starter, you’ve probably already proved what you are.

  7. Z buc billy Says:

If Winston stinks up the field and Arians don’t want to draft a quarterback. Then Arians may not be the one for job.

  8. T REX Says:

I can see us going 7-9 with Winston having a Winston type year…good and bad. They’ll be stuck by having to franchise him. It would be dumb to keep just to appease Arians. It’s going to end up being a bad hire. Cut our losses. Wipe the slate clean.

  9. Dapostman Says:

    @gotbbucs,

You mean like Jim Plunkett? Doug Williams? Warren Moon? Steve Young? All were better later in their careers.

  10. Buchead588 Says:

Jameis is far better then what people say an believe I remember what it was like before Jameis I want him here a long time GoBucs

  11. D-Rome Says:

Jay-Miss has had prove-it seasons for the past two seasons. He’s proven to have a propensity for making bad decisions and making great passes to opposing defensive backs.

  12. LakeLand Says:

All of these QBs was drafted after Jameis Winston

    Marcus Mariotta
    Dak Prescott
    Carson Wentz
    Jared Golf
    Mitch Trubisky
    Lamar Jackson
    Patrick Mahomes

They all led their teams to the playoffs

And spare me the lame excuses about defense, running game etc
The Bucs had better receivers than any of the teams above
And some teams had bad defenses, poor running game

  13. donuts Says:

    But, then what?

Well if history tells us anything….what did BA do in AZ when he had bad QB play? He went out and got him a proven veteran that was unloved in Carson Palmer and Stanton. I think that worked well. I would hesitate to jump into the automatic Winston franchise hoop as the only option as history tells us otherwise.

I strongly believe this is what the Bucs will do to try and fix the DE/DT (GMC-JPP) losses. I dont see any other choice. While BA may like to risk it, it wont be on questionable player health rather he saves those chances for going deep with Winston to Perriman this year. As JBF has hinted, at the end of pre-season they will cherry pick from the teams with the strongest DL groups, which is how the Bucs got Nassib.

  14. Buc4evr Says:

It’s really hard to have a prove it season without a right side of the O-line, no running game , and potentially no pass rush. Jameis is in a bad situation. He could very well be put in a situation of being down 21 points in the first quarter Or losing in the last minute because of defensive collapse. Sorry I just think this team didn’t gain much talent this year and will be in dire straights w/o JPP and GMC.

  15. Buccernutter Says:

Gotbbucs but…um…ya… Arians came out of retirement because he disagrees with that notion. But okay. Smh. Very smart analysis. 👌

If he can stay on the field consistently, he will be top 10.

  16. Buccernutter Says:

    T Rex

Bruce will be the best hire in franchise history. U know as much as realist. Absolutely nothing.

  17. Buccernutter Says:

    Lakeland

Lmao. U want people to spare you the facts!?!? Haha ya we have baller receivers. We also had the #1 passing offense. But ya ignore the run game special teams and defense cuz baller receivers should compensate for those holes. Real smart analysis again on this thread. 👌

You think they would have led the 2018 bucs to the playoffs? They must, right? U know cuz we have great receivers.

    😂😂😂😂😂😂

  18. Joe Says:

He went out and got him a proven veteran that was unloved in Carson Palmer and Stanton.

Stanton was a proven veteran? Proven at what, that he couldn’t get the job done?

  19. LakeLand Says:

    Facts,

    The Bucs offense 26 INTS

Over twice as many as the teams above
Except for the Bears (Trubisky had 14)

I guess INT don’t hurt the team

  20. Kobe Faker Says:

“Kobe believes the direction the franchise will solely depend on next year draft position which means total wins

we go 5 wins or less, Tampa will have a reasonable chance of getting the top 3 QBs…Jameis will be on the plank

if we go 7-8 total, Jameis is looking good because it would cost us too much draft capital to move up

    so there you have it!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  22. Buccernutter Says:

Okay so you want to cherry pick?

There is a correlation between air yards and picks btw. Especially in Dirk’s one dimensional west coast offense.

But please continue with the Mitch, Lamar, Mariota and dak are better quarterbacks than jameis rhetoric. But please only reference their offensive weapons because it’s ridiculous to consider run game, special teams, and defense…right?

IF A TEAM HAS ELITE RECEIVING WEAPONS, THEY BETTER MAKE THE PLAYOFFS NO MATTER HOW BAD THE DEFENSE IS!!!

    Foh😂

  23. Z buc billy Says:

Buccernutter Tony Dungy was the best hire and always will be. Bruce Arians was the best hire but he won’t be the best in history. Plus Dungy and Gruden did not have to work for Jason not to Licht they made all personal decisions.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

there will be a learning curve…..not only for winston but for the team….

i can see a scenario where winston doesnt exactly “light it out” or starts out slow(similar to the colts last year) but the TEAM still preforms well enough to have at worst a winning season at best win a playoff game…..

in that case, you keep winston relying on the fact that BA and BL will continue to develop winston….something dirk failed to do…..

and if winston does fail, imo its more of an indictment on the previous staff vs the current staff….

  25. LakeLand Says:

In 2015 the Bucs were 5th in rushing
    Rushing for 2162 yards

They were 6-6 fighting for a wild card berth
Their 4 games they went 0-4
The offense scored 71 points (17.7 PPG)

Jameis Winston 5 INTS (during the 0-4 losing streak)
Get named to the Pro Bowl
    Defensive staff get fired
OC promoted to HC ( 3 years later he get fired)

2019 we’re still talking prove it

A weird situation last year. Winston did prove it for his last 6 games but not for 16.

If Arians –> Leftwich –> Christiansen –> Winston fails, then that will be it! If Jameis Winston hasn’t matured professionally by now it is hard to see him ever having another opportunity as good as the one he has right now.

I am expecting big things for him this year. All of the necessary pieces are in place on the offensive side of the ball. Not perfect but certainly good enough.

Don’t forget the Universal NFL Draft Rule… the players you cover and need most are almost always ranked and taken before your pick.
IMO it not not good enough for Jameis to have a good year for him to return in 2020 , Jameis will have to have a GREAT jaw dropping year leaving no question he is the QB of the franchise… remember he has no NFL strikes left so that is a consideration too.

  30. Stokes963 Says:

I am a fan of Jameis the player. I do think that playing from behind has a lot to do with INTs. However, if we end up picking in the top 10 again there is no way we can resign him. Major cap trouble already. Part was with him and start over with a Qb on a rookie deal.

  31. GhostofSchiano Says:

If we’re on the way to double digit wins and the playoffs…we should sign JW to a long term deal right before the playoffs begin to show our faith in him.

How many prove it years does the #1 pick in the entire draft get? Jay Miss has not been the answer, is not the answer and will not be the answer going forward. It’s gonna be a 4-12 or 5-11 year and hopefully, if we can’t get Tua, there are other good QBs coming out. Off the field Jay Miss is one little boo boo away from a 1 year suspension. On the field, Jay Miss is at his best an average NFL QB. That’s not why you pick a guy #1 overall.

Dungy the clown was a ignorant one dimensional fool that had a highly ranked defense on a horrible team. facts cant be rewritten because you have a mancrush on a failure….. 38. Defense Rules Says:

Wow, 4 months until the season STARTS & already we’re debating ‘What’s next?’ Or maybe that should read ‘Who’s next?’ Really is a slow time of year.

It seems to me that BA & his coaching staff are very METHODICAL when it comes to player evaluations. BA’s in charge, and IF he wants Jameis for 2020 & beyond, that’ll be what he’ll get I’m confident. BA has 3 possible options it seems:

1 – Sign Jameis to a multi-year deal after this year if his performance warrants.
2 – Franchise tag Jameis for 1-year IF BA sees enough improvement to warrant another look-see.
3 – Don’t re-sign Jameis, and draft a QB in 2020, or potentially sign one off the street.

Where Graziano ranks Jameis really has NOTHING to do with it. Where BA ranks Jameis at the end of this year has EVERYTHING to do with it. Time will tell.

BTW Joe, Byron Leftwich has a LONG WAY TO GO before he’ll be considered HC material. He’ll actually have to ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING FIRST.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

Why y’all get so hot and bothered for?

I love this situation with Winston. He has a lot to proove this year and a ton of pressure.

This year represents Winstons clutch moment and I love clutch moments!!! Watching these athlete’s perform under extreme pressure is my most favorite part of sports.

Y’all give up if ya want but I got expectation for our QB. I expect that first drive of the season to look pretty. I want to see a competent team for a change around here. Winston is our franchise QB and I expect him to deliver. Enough with this rebuild nonsense & this roster nonsense and salary CAP BS. I want a fu**in QB in this town right freaking now and Winston has the talent………He needs to take control of this thing and Lead the way then the rest of the team will follow suit!!!!!

It needs to start in 2019!

Personally I like turnovers, Jamaican beef patties being my favorites.

  42. LakeLand Says:

If the Bucs had a top defense, solid special teams, good run game

They could win with Ryan Griffin
And pay him $1.5 million a year

  43. JimmyJack Says:

    Defense Rules.

To me their is another option.

You can franchise Winston in 2020 and can also draft a 1st Round QB to compete with him for 2020. It may seem unorthodox and would cost us a ton of 💰 but, as a fan, it’s a small price to pay if you can roll into 2021 with an unquestioned Franchise QB.

It would likely take a unique circumstance to make a move like that. An injury to Jamies could make you think……….Point is that it’s another option and I got nothing wrong with extra options.

  47. TexBuc Says:

Let me start with Mahomes is a GENERATIONAL QB and maybe years before some team finds another one. I like Winston because of his ability to operate with a dirty pocket with pass rushers in his face. Very hard to coach a QB that is afraid of the pass rush which Winston is NOT. My opinion is it is easier to calm down an aggressive QB willing to take the SHOT versus one who’s first instinct is to take to the short safe pass in other words captain check down.

I believe Bruce will be Winston’s Jimbo in the NFL who will get the most out of him.

  48. Jim Says:

Third “prove-it year” for Jameis. And in many respects this is looking like a re-build year, so stay tuned. I’m very keen on watching every game…

  49. JimmyJack Says:

Lakeland……The part that bothers me is the running game. This team was built to win with offense. Last time I checked that meant you needed to have a competent running game.

The last three years of atrocious running game has no excuse. And it needs to get fixed Right Now!!!

  50. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Jameis will be going into year 10 and people will still be posting about how he needs a top 5 d, run game and 4-5 good receivers to win

Another huge consideration is the annual salary demands…that can actually benefit the Buc franchise

Dak and Wentz will be getting 30 mil before the season starts

if JW3 only wins 5 games but plays very well. Kobe can see BA going to the Glazers and asking for 2 more years with JW at 21 million per

Kobe believes Glazers are giving BA 3 years. they may tie them together

*Dont forget the Mariota factor since they will always be connected to each other for rest of there careers…and they will play each other again this year

Also will be the play of the top 3 QBs this year in college. What if Tua wins the championship and Heisman?

Just like anything with JW3, Its always love or hate. this year those opinions will be taken to the next level”

I don’t think BA would walk over having to upgrade their QB position. As much as we would like to think BA came to the Bucs only because of JW, is not entirely true. He did it mainly as a favor to Jason. BA is not married to JW.

  60. SteveK Says:

Jameis needs to show up like a number one overall pick. Licht needs to show his roster doesn’t blow.

I am skeptical on both fronts, as the past seasons have not provided any hope since the 9-7 year one. Too bad Jameis got himself suspended. One last chance. It has to happen, definitively, this year.

How nice would it be to have a Franchise QB without having to cherry 🍒 pick statistics to make him appear to be formidable.

We need consistency, and less silly decisions. 3% of his passes were INTs. 50% of the INTs are of the fugly variety- looking like a clown 🤡.

I hope Jameis proves me wrong and balls out.

  61. SteveK Says:

Joe that wrote this is the pro-Jameis one, thus trying to marry Leftwich’s job status to Winston. I can somewhat see that, but it’s not like Jameis hasn’t shat the bed (on and off the field) before.

  62. SteveK Says:

The end of last season was better, but was it a mirage? I hope not. It’s so frustrating to see Winston make some ridiculous plays, and than make a really bad error. His turnover rate is too high and some of them stuck out as really bad plays. To his credit he also makes some amazing plays. I just wish we could get consistency.

  63. tye Says:

the Bucs are like a battered wife married to Winston… No matter how bad he is, they keep making excuses for him and believing he is going to change…

Mediocre qbs are easily replaced… especially when a rookie would help the cap so team can build around him instead of qb making bank and forcing all other positions to be of lesser quality…

In many ways, cutting the chord with winston and bringing in a fresh, new, more hopeful qb would do this team a tremendous favor!

  64. webster Says:

    @ lakeland and joe

When the bucs were 6-6 in 2015, thats when kwon was pop for drinking an energy drink.

    @ lakeland

Not one qb you listed played under the same circumstances as winston. Every qb you listed picked “after” winston has a much better defense, running game, and kicking game. Fyi….the bucs are have been a top 10 offense 3 of the 4 years he has been the qb. The one year they were not, they were like 12. Qb is not the problem.

  65. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Jason Licht’s best move is investing in Famous Jameis… Sports fans are stupid for the most part, so they rag on Jameis. Jameis is a future HOFer.

  66. Defense Rules Says:

@SenileSenior … “A weird situation last year. Winston did prove it for his last 6 games but not for 16.” I must be missing something Senile … we won the first TWO of those SIX games (against a weak SF team & a wounded Carolina team) then went on a FOUR game losing tear against teams with fair defenses (Saints, Ravens, Cowboys & Falcons). In those last 4 games Bucs scored a TOTAL of 78 points … 19.5 PPG average. For the first 3 of those our offense scored a TOTAL of 46 points … 15.3 PPG average.

I keep reading this fairytale about Jameis did great in the last 6 games of 2018 but I still don’t see it. Jameis did BETTER than he had been doing for the most part, but not GREAT by any means. I’m not a ‘Jameis-hater’ by any means, but I do believe that a player’s retention should be performance-based AND potential-based. Ya that’s right, ‘What have you done for me lately?’ as well as ‘What do I expect from you in the future?’ BOTH of those require a hard, realistic look at a player’s past performances.

In Jameis’ case, his past shows a very up-and-down, inconsistent QB … incredibly good in some games, and yes, incredibly bad in some other games. Until Jameis demonstrates CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE I couldn’t support him for a long-term contract with the Bucs. THAT’S the area I’m really hoping that BA, Clyde & Byron can help him with this year.

  67. Bucsfanman Says:

If Jameis were drafted in the 2nd round we would’ve cut his a$$ already! All this talk about Leftwich and coaching, there is only ONE common denominator people: Jameis Winston.
Offense, defense, and special teams do NOT live in a vacuum. They don’t call it “complementary football” for nothing. So,
If we had a decent defense….
If we had a good kicking game…
    If the offense scored TDs…
If we had a running game…
If the offense doesn’t turn the ball over…
    If we had good play-calling…
    It all goes hand-in-hand.
Jameis needs to clean it up, plain and simple. If he doesn’t, none of the above matters. And THAT folks, is the point.
This ‘fear’ of losing Jameis is irrational beyond words. We won games we weren’t supposed to win last year with an over-the-hill, turnover-prone, journeyman, back-up QB. We can lose just as many games with a back-up QB as we have with Jameis.
That said, I truly hope he lights it up. It is in ALL of our best interests, especially as fans.

Simple as this, does he check off all the boxes:
Talent, arm strength, intelligence, short-term memory, coachable and x-factor(it factor), we can mostly say yes, we have seen it in spurts, this year we/he needs to put it all together. But that doesn’t discount the lack of a running game, poor defense and terrible STs

  69. Jeagan1999 Says:

All these idiots who keep saying “but the last 6 games of the season Jameis played great football….” are hilarious! He’s never done it for a whole season! You don’t give an NFL QB a long term contract worth a hundred million dollars or more based on a handful of games! Where’s the logic in that? Jameis’s worst trait is his maddening inconsistency! Sure he’s talented…..but you can’t always depend on his talent to trump his poor decision making! One last season for JW to prove he is a top tier QB….or the Bucs move on.

I can’t believe how dumb you are and how much you still comment.

  71. Pete I Says:

Winston is the “best” QB in Buccaneers history and he isn’t even in track to make the Ring of of honor at Ray Jay.

  72. Brandon Says:

Arians pulled Carson Palmer off the scrap heap and brought him back from the dead and he had the best seasons of his otherwise fairly unremarkable career. If Jameis doesn’t cut it, I’m sure he can find another one. Arians even had Drew Stanton looking like a pretty decent starting QB while he was there.

  73. BucsBandit Says:

I’m tired of hearing this “Bruce Arians isn’t interested in a rebuild and it’s why he took the job.”

    REALLY???

The Bucs have gone 5-11 for two straight seasons and on top of that are in salary cap hell.

How is this team not already a rebuild?

  74. Anonymous Says:

Easy there Joe, “Stanton was a proven veteran? Proven at what, that he couldn’t get the job done?” You could very well change Stanton’s name with Winston’s. Right?
    Go Bucs!

Blame Jameis for Sorry Ass Jason Licht… geez Jameis Bashers… In Jameis I trust! Fireeee Licht!
