Ice Cold

April 4th, 2019

No worries — for now.

The draft has yet to come and already people are talking about coaching hot seats.

Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report put out a list of coaches on various levels of a hot seat. One category Gagnon created is “ice cold.” And the man sitting atop this list is none other than Bucco Bruce Arians.

Bruce Arians, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

We suppose it’s possible that 2019 could be enough of a disaster in Tampa for the no-nonsense Arians to retire for the third time in eight years. But the Buccaneers know this’ll take some time and they caught a big fish in Arians. They won’t throw it back.

If Bucs general manager Jason Licht were to fire Arians after just one season on the job, Licht would probably show up for work to find that his key card no longer works.

Lots of truth to what Gagnon writes. Joe cannot imagine Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht pushing to get rid of Arians next year. But Gagnon is right, if Licht did, he too would have to clean out his office. It is no stretch to suggest Licht remained with the Bucs because of his ability to land Arians.

And yes, Joe agrees that if the Bucs completely implode this season and America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, totally falls apart, Joe could see Arians retiring and maybe not by his choice. Arians’ health is fine right now but add double-digit losses to the mix and who knows?

Besides, Joe knows Arians has a short shelf life as it is. The element Gagnon got wrong is that Arians knows this will take a while. Rather, Arians is looking for a quick fix and he’s already said he’s not here for a rebuild. If the Bucs have to draft another quarterback (in 2020), that’s a rebuild.

    Agree

    And let’s hope we are not drafting a QB in 2020

  2. passthebuc Says:

    not going to happen

  3. Bird Says:

    I feel Jameis will have his best year as a buc

    And Will it be enough to deserve 30 mil a year ?

    Glazers are the ones in hot seat….Once BA realizes what a joke the glazers are he will bail… i say by week 9 BA will be looking for an out, health or another excuse to escape the black hole that is the small market minor league bucs…

    LOL…why a I thinking of the G’Boyz….Parcels twice….the Oregon coach once…what a hot steaming mess…I have lost trust in the owners….”nice guys finish last “…they are just not a good match as NFL owners…after 25 years they are still getting their lunch money stolen

    Its a house of cards!!!!!!!!!!!

    And speaking of “drafting QB in 2020” !!! There was someone I heard on sports radio saying that the possible next progression for a team’s long term success, might just be always having a rookie contract!!!!!!!! There is much analytics that will tell you never sign a RB to a second contract, because year 5 and on, you will never see the production of year 1 thru 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But they talked about, was that QB’s second contracts, hand cuff and majority of stymie success for Teams!!!!!!! Then ask, who will be the first team to just keep drafting a QB every 5 years, and build the team, Then trade or let leave in free-agency so some other team will over-pay and pick up a compensatory pick!!!!!!!

    What team could be that forward thinking?????

    Is this not the Bucs Moduc Operandi????????????

    Having never signed a QB to a second contract??????? And finally having that to an advantage to work the system???????????

    The “real” fans would love to see the Buc’s start to think outside the box!!!!!!!! But the reality, is that they will be last in line!!!!!

    2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    How does licht still have a job?

    But Tmax……..I thought all would be great if GMC is gone…..I guess not with you…..#1 malcontent……

  9. wausa Says:

    On another note ESPN says the Bucs blew it in free agency, not because of the players they signed and the players they lost, but because the Bucs lost out on a 3rd and 4th round compensatory picks.
    According to another NFL executive the Bucs would have received a 3rd and 4th round selection for loosing Humphries and Alexander, but the signing of Barrett and Perriman offset it.

    Because glazers have NO INTENTION of fielding a competitive NFL team. Their goals are very clear basement titles and to provide as many nfl coaching staffs with a secure retirement.

  12. WhattheBUCisthis Says:

    Man… I hope this works out. GMC must go, along with Will. Again, hoping, that we draft Oliver with our 1st pick
    Go BUCS

  13. tmaxcon Says:

    On field results should have made every fan a malcontent but some of you accept losing and embarrassing failures way to easy….

    Tbbf

    I wish i was wrong but until these clowns earn it on Sunday’s they are what their record says they are…. minor league franchise that cant compete against wet paper bags

  15. Smashsquatch Says:

    BA on the sidelines for a few years, how well they play will determine how long. BA moves upstairs when he’s ready with eyes on promoting either Leftwich or Bowles. This is the obvious long term plan.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    A little bit surprised to hear this from you, Bird.
    Definitely hoping you are right, man.
    I believe he can have a big year.
  18. SOEbuc Says:
    It’s reboot with Jameis here this year. If he doesn’t show up and get us to the playoffs (or even worse a 5-11 record), it’s going to be the rebuilding of a different GM with Arians bringing in a new rookie QB.
  19. 813bucboi Says:
    someone please throw “ice cold” water on @rhealist….lol….he’s hot in the pants again….
    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!
  20. jjbucfan Says:
    Great find NOSBOS, 3 things stood out for me in that video:
    1. Speed- dude can run
    2. High motor- never gave up on a play, always chasing down the play.
    3. Discipline- This is the most important, He played HIS position and did HIS assignment, he didn’t go off and try to be hero running around like a chicken with his head cutoff.
    Can’t wait to see what he can do for us.
  21. Stanglassman Says:
    Nosbos- I’m a big fan of the Shaq B. Signing too. Thx for the link great stuff.
    I’ve read elsewhere that our FA signing were for so little money and short term that it shouldn’t effect the compensation picks for losing Kwon and Hump. Don’t know who right it’ll be interesting to see.
  22. Jean Lafitte Says:
    If JW falls apart this season and we draft or change our QB, it want be rebuilding. Rebuilding suggest that we are gonna completely clean the slate and turn the whole roster over. Wrong terminology. We will retool, and hopefully upgrade the QB position but turning the roster over is a little far fetched.
