“Still Got A Chip On My Shoulder”

March 2nd, 2019

After innocent Bucs fans dealt with stiff J.R. Sweezy and misplaced Caleb Benenoch for two consecutive seasons at right guard, change is coming there again and Joe has been yearning publicly for Steelers guard Ramon Foster in free agency.

He feels like a Logan Mankins-type addition who actually might want to be here — Mankins looked like someone stole his dog when he arrived at One Buc Palace from the Patriots in August 2014 — and would arrive without the chronic knee issue.

At 33 years old, Foster has been an unbreakable rock for the Steelers since Bucco Bruce Arians was in Pittsburgh calling plays, as Joe explained two weeks ago.

This week, Foster weighed in on Twitter to share the powerful comments and offensive line analysis of Ravens tackle Orlando Brown, Jr., son of the longtime Browns and Ravens tackle who died in 2011.

Foster called attention to the young Brown, who was spectacular as a Ravens rookie right tackle last season after completely bombing at the NFL Scouting Combine. He fell to the third round and man, the Bucs and many other teams have to be wishing they did a better job evaluating him.

Joe’s interest was in the fire Foster showed in his Tweet. Yeah, it’s just a guy typing characters on his phone. But it does reflect his mindset, and everything Joe has read and heard about Foster is he’s all about raising the game of those around him and setting a high standard.

The Bucs thought they were getting that in Sweezy and in center Ryan Jensen, who was signed last year. Maybe, hopefully, Foster is the guy who delivers that this year in free agency.

translation…”Still got room in my wallet”….nope

  2. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    LOVE the attitude.
YES, that would be welcome on this OL.

  3. DOUG Says:

    sign this guy up ASAP!!

  4. Guzzie Says:

Never understood why moving Ali to left guard and making the right side so vulnerable, putting our worst lineman between Smith and Jensen and our best lineman on the right made more sense, but most of what Klueless did didn’t make sense

  5. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ No doubt, Guzzie. That was so ridiculous. We actually took something that was working great…. Marpet at RG….. and moved him to a different position 2 years in a row.

    WTF?!

  6. DooshLaRue Says:

    Sign him!!!

  7. StoutGospel Says:

^^^Men…because 9 times outta 10, if there is a suspected deficiency on the OL somewhere at Guard, the staff put the stronger person on the blind side of a right-handed QB. To increase in the likelihood of the QB being able to at least see the pressure coming on his open/good side, hence at the RG. Left side of Line needs to be as….stout…as possible, with the meager available options they were working with.

    Go Bucs!

  8. John Sinclear Says:

Age 33 ?? Are we trying to put together a football team or open a retirement home ??

  9. Bird Says:

    That’s one big dude.

Got some serious swelling going on in his arms

  10. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Crafty jason licht would rather waste a draft pick on kappa than draft an orlando brown from a major football program

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Joe I’m with you 100% now on signing Foster. Wasn’t at first, but the Bucs’ OLine really needs LEADERSHIP IMO, and Foster could provide that, and most likely at a reasonable cost. Age is a factor of course, but if he can give us at least 1 and preferably 2 years at LG, that’ll buy us time to draft his replacement.

And Duthsty, Orlando Brown was taken #83. Alex Cappa was taken by the Bucs at #94. I’m not a big Cappa fan (or Jason Licht fan for that matter), BUT … no way Jason could’ve drafted Orlando Brown at #94. Now, drafting him in the 2nd round in place of RoJo or Stewart was doable, but no other team saw Brown as a 2nd rounder either.

  12. BucAllNight Says:

    @StoutGospel

Spot on… sound like some one who plays or at least knows what he’s talking bout. I’d be all for Foster btw and thinks he’d be a great fit.

Heres the million dollar question tho.. if we get Iaputi(sp) who only played LG. Do we move Marpet again back to RG?

  13. tmaxcon Says:

why would he leave a classy organization for a minor league franchise and a run at a basement title with cancer93 and friends…. remember players have choices

bird and before your little feeling are all butthurt again… Let me quote a great man who once stated “It aint bashing if it’s true”

  14. tmaxcon Says:

move Marpet again back to RG?

move marpet to the bench so he can watch and learn from actual nfl starters… no one loves mediocrity or average players like bucfan…

  15. Pickgrin Says:

Foster made $3.6M last year – and started all 16 games.

He has missed only 4 starts in the last 4 years – and has missed only 9 starts in the last 8 years….

Sounds doable! Go get him Jason!

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Sign
    G/T Jamon Brown (Age:25)

    Draft
    G/C Elgton Jenkins (Age:23)

There U go – Problem solved at Right Guard.

  17. teacherman777 Says:

    I would celebrate this signing.

We need some Steeler Spirit on the Bucs!

Our O-Line has sucked since Logan retired!

Did Licht cause his retirement by asking him to re-structure? @joe

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Moving Marpet back to Right Guard should depend on who is on the roster when hte time comes.

If the Bucs manage to acquire a good RG, there will be no need to move Marpet back. And he isn’t bad at Left Guard.

I agree he never should have been moved though.

  19. StoutGospel Says:

    Yeah @BucAllNight yeah!

Mike Iupati, while technically 2 years younger than Foster, has had some very real knee and back problems flare up from time to time. For a guy who bends over and blocks 300 pound men for a living, knees and backs well, might wanna roll with Foster’s durability and demeanor. If..only picking between these two that is.

My guess is BA might have his eye on some other gem along the way. We’ll see, but it’ll definitely be a veteran who can pass and run block.

Gotta pick a cap casualty or FA that comes from a pretty stout OLine already. Don’t project up, just plug and play.

In the draft, the Bradbury and Lindstrom kids look pretty good, for draft picks.

    Go Bucs!

  20. BringBucsBack Says:

Bring Mr. Foster in for a year or two then slide him into our lackluster scouting department, if he indeed can spot OL talent as easily as he claims. It’d be a two-for! He sure as heck looks mean as a snake!

  21. FlBoy84 Says:

Hard to see Jensen as the grizzled vet who would demand accountability from those around him when he just a 1-year starter in Baltimore. Bring a little attitude… yes, but he’s basically a kid like the rest of them. Dotson should’ve taken that road, but as he said, he’s just worried about his own job.

  22. BucEmUp 7 Says:

sweezy wasnt so stiff once he got back to seattle. That was Jason Lichts fault as well right?

  23. Howard Cosell Says:

    Sweezey!
    The man. the legend.
This man played team glazer like no other.
The Plan: Go to Folrida get paid like a prince and concentrate on getting healthy for a big return in Seattle. Try to play as little as possible. Don’t risk any physical setbacks for anything as ridiculous as playing for the Bucs Lol. Just soak up the rehab. Take a couple of years and get really healthy for Pete Carroll Lol on the glazer dime.
    Just awesome!
    +5

  24. Howard Cosell Says:

    Sweezey >>> Team glazer

  25. MadMax Says:

Signing O line isnt working so well with us….busted on Sleazy! Who was the other one? Oh yeah, Toe Nicks….na, unless he’s cheap, NOPE!

Draft them. We hit on Marpet! Now we can hit on Bradburry probably top of 2nd, and even Max Scharping probably 4th….i think thats how im going to play out my no trade mock for us

    LB Devin White
    C/G Garret Bradbury
    DE Chase Winovich/Charles Omenihu
OT Max Scharping or CB Trayvon Mullen
WR Hunter Renfrow (the clone to replace Hump)

  26. TOM Says:

MadMax: Would rather have Lindstrom instead of Bradbury. Not to sure about a DE at 3. Like the rest.

  27. MadMax Says:

I would too, but he’s going in the first….if he is there, OH YEAH!!!!

  28. MadMax Says:

Im puzzled what to do at 3 too….the more i watch QB Gardner Minshew the more I like him…theres our BU QB at 3 if we want to draft one.

  29. MadMax Says:

Bradbury will go high 2nd…. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=171&v=zJww2OJshLo

  30. SOEbuc Says:

At the moment, you’re trying to put two 33 year olds on the right side Joe.
