No Honey For The Bucs

March 11th, 2019

Joe is depressed but not surprised.

Safety Tyrann Mathieu scored $14 million per season today from the team that should have been last year’s AFC champs, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Not even the lure of postgame cocktails with his good friend Bucco Bruce Arians can compete with that.

Cash-strapped and talent-challenged on defense, the Bucs will press on through the free agency process.

  1. Buc4life24 Says:

We can’t afford any big names and it’s proved to not make a difference in the past when we did. Licht better have his A game this draft, cause it’s our only hope these days!

  2. thunderchunkyPA Says:

This sucks, last place again in 2018 and no money to get better. So Licht is throwing ALL his hope in the BA basket. A team that has lost a lot more then it’s won is keeping most of the same players? Hmmmm.

  3. Rod Munch Says:

I don’t see how anyone could have realistically thought they were going to sign him.

  4. Bird Says:

A lot of good safeties still out there. We need to sign one and cross off draft list.

  5. Bird Says:

    Test

  6. Mike Says:

I think the guy was overpriced anyway

  7. Rich Says:

they should have traded Jackson a long time ago when they could’ve gotten a lot more for hom… another blunder by Bud Licht!! Also, why are we keeping these marginal players when this is the strongest FA class in years and we have no cap space? Bud Licht strikes again…..we are so weak at LB, OL and Secondary and we are unable to do anything about it…..nonsense!!!

  8. JimmyJack Says:

Rod Munch cause media kept talking up Honey Badger and creating smoke

  9. buddy Says:

hahahaha and the hits just keep on coming so much for that guy too.

  10. AleteredEgo Says:

Cash-strapped and talent-challenged on defense, the Bucs will press on through the free agency process.”….
    .
    .
more like getting steam rolled by the league….

  11. Loyaltotheend Says:

If anyone thinks Arians and his friends are gonna magically change this team into winners you are mistaken

Team needs a great draft and smart moves and Licht can’t do that

  12. thunderchunkyPA Says:

    B. Allen, Gholston, Unrein, E. Smith, are still on the team? There is almost 10 Mil there.

  13. Rossta61 Says:

What can you say, it’s a Bucs life, we suck again!

  14. joestang Says:

Licht is to blame for this mess, he blew all cap money on bums and now we are cash strapped and are watching good free-agents go by along with losing our own players. This team will suck for a long time thanks to Licht. We will be worse in 2019 than last year. Looking forward to the number 1 or 2 pick in next years draft and hopefully the Glazers firing Licht.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

Loyal……..It not magic. It’s called fundamentals.

  16. TexBuc Says:

My opinion is improve the front seven and better scheme will help the secondary.

  17. dmatt Says:

Here we go again! Licht will wait for leftovers. He is a Dud. Let’s make BA the GM n give Bowles the headcoach job. Look at the 2nd round picks n FA Licht brought in that were a bust. Nothing surprises me anymore with this dude, my bad…Dud.

  18. NPRSageBoy Says:

No one to blame but Jason Licht. The last couple of years he through cash around like a drunken sailor and all we have to show for it is 10 wins and last place finishes in the NFC South.

  19. Buccaneerscotty Says:

What did we pay BA? Anyone know?

  20. Bobby M. Says:

Let’s be honest…Why would the Glazers permit Licht to be a player in FA? He’s blown every free agency signing with injury riddled players or disgruntled. He also blew his nut on a new coaching staff so he’s headed for the clearance isle with FAs…Thus the hype on how great our existing talent is.

Technically the hype was on our “skilled” players…which just took a blow…as did our defense losing Alexander, Grimes leaving…and we have no kicker. Talented 5-11 teams generally don’t do better losing their better starters on every unit.

  21. The Buc Realist Says:

Coach stale biscuit will not be long for Tampa!!!!!!!! What is the over/under he is “Re-Retired” after the 2020 season!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Not there yet Says:

The Bucs have been hyped for two years runnin only to fail in the most epic way. The free agent moves they made the last two years only to not change at all is just a bad look for them and without the big time cash to spend The difference makers will come in the draft. No one wants to be a part of a losing culture. The free agents keep getting the blame while the decade long losers escape ridicule year after year. This won’t change until they all get too old to resign or we get a new gm.

  23. LargoBuc Says:

You people blaming Licht are ridiculous saying we have no cap room because hes such a bad GM. He had to pay Evans, Marpet, Smith, and Winston all talented players that he drafted. Kwon who was a 4th round pick and Hump who was undrafted are now being paid $21 mil a year combined, both Licht guys which suggest to me it was coaching more than talent. If we had the money to pay for all these FA you want than we wouldn’t have talents in other places and you would be complaining about that. Most of your opinions are all hind sight and no one really has any contructive input on how to manage a team. I’m not saying Licht is Rich McCay but he is who we have and he is not as terrible as most make him out to be. Stop complaining so damn much and just get on board the ship or walk plank and float on over to another team and jump on there bandwagon because
we sure don’t need you on ours when BA straightens this ship.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs right now have $12m of free space…

Not sure how we’re supposed to resign Hump and get Honey Badger and have a draft class and get depth signings.

Even if you got rid of McCoy, that puts you at $25m of cap space with $9m going to the draft, and you still need 3 LBs if you’re in a 3-4, and another corner, and a safety and a guard…

With that said the Bucs can still cut a bunch of guys and free up another $10m, but that still doesn’t mean you’re spending $14m on a safety.

  25. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

“Fix the trenches, fix the Bucs.” I know I’m stealing someone else’s tag line, and I’ll give you credit for the quote if I remember who u are.

Oh, yeah–and teach some fundamentals! Worry about free agents after we are playing well enough to benefit from them.

  26. Justafan Says:

TexBuc…no it won’t. Fixing the secondary, fixes the secondary. If you cant move a qb off his first read, then it makes it hard to get to the QB, because the ball is gone.
Grimes was our best and he was sketchy. Most of the teams that went to the playoffs have at least one good corner. Patriots/Gilmore Saints/lattimore. Corner is one position that Bill Belichick spends money on. They have always had good corner play in New England. Ty law, revis, aqib, Gilmore. That’s why Schiano traded for Revis because he knew how valuable a corner was. In the NFC you better have at least one good corner

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Derwin James cap number is $2.8m…

    Just saying.

  28. Dan the Man Says:

    So lets see:

    -No run game,
    -WR group is thin,
    -secondary is trash,
    -don’t have a kicker,
    -Qb is suspect trash,
    -the O-Line is awful
    -cap strapped
-all the key guys are gone

Man..this Franchise is the New Browns haha!!

  29. AfrikaThaRapper Says:

@Joe I don’t understand the inner-workings of the NFL, but how can a team be both lacking in talent and lacking in money for better talent??? Please help….go Bucs.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

Don’t care how good or bad you think the roster is. None of it matters if you can’t play the fundamentals.

Add three top tier free agents and we still lose if you can tackle as a team or block as a team.

My expectations is not W-Ls it is playing solid football. Something we haven’t had in over a decade.

Let’s get good first then we can get great!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  31. JimmyJack Says:

VitaV finishished off the season stronger then D.James.

    So there’s that.

  32. Joeypoppems Says:

We should’ve seen this coming. Kind of funny that all our solutions to adding talent to this team were blown up in about 9 hrs lol.

  33. JimmyJack Says:

The reason we have no money has a lot to do with poor coaching.

The last staff developed not one G T or C for the OL. This is why we are spending so much money there.

With all the investments(draft picks) put into the secondary we should have not needs there at all. But again we developed nobody at S or CB so we have needs there.

Poor coaching and developement have hurt our CAP dollar, make no mistake.

  34. What the buc Says:

Derwin James and Justin Evans had similar numbers in their 1st season. Derwin has 2 top level pass rushers and they still got boat raced by New England in the playoffs. Stop acting like Derwin is the savior. No safety since the days of Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu has been. Agree Derwin is good but not a game changer.

  35. Tony LA Says:

    Hey Joe,

Can you recap a current projected Bucs 53 man roster so some of the skittish commenters above can get off the ledge?

We all knew Kwon and Humph and Djax were gone.
    ZERO surprises thus far.

Getting a 6th rounder was more than most thought for Djax.

It’s going to be a loooooong 2 weeks for some of you.

  36. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Serious question, will Bucs win a single game. We had a 5-11 team that is now being gutted via free agency and we can’t sign anyone decent. By my count we now need the following: CB, 2 LBs, S, DE, RT, RG, WR, RB, PK, and more depth at nearly every position including back up QB. If Licht hits a grand slam in the draft it seems to me there will still be six positions filled by guys who should not be starting in the NFL. SIX. That means more than 25% of your starting roster is bad to really bad. Add in a few injuries and the situation gets worse due to the lack of depth. If I were Arians I would consider faking a medical issue and retiring again. No way in hell this team succeeds next year. There is old saying about how you cant make chicken salad of …… AB has to see the writing on the wall.

  37. Buc4evr Says:

Overpriced free agents never seem to work out for the Bucs. Just looking for solid well disciplined players and great coaching. No more overpaying for old vets looking for their last job before retirement.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

What the buc – LOL! He was literally an all-pro as a rookie… That’s the very definition of a game changer.

Anywho I was just saying that Honey Badger isn’t as good as James and just got $14m a year, where as a guy on his rookie deal is getting $3m and under contract for 5 years. The point is don’t miss on your 1st rounders.

Also it wasn’t a knock at Vita, if Vita can become an all-pro he’ll have been the better pick since an all-pro d-lineman is more important than an all-pro safety. But Vita had 1 sack and 1 TFL in his final five games, the idea that he was destroying everyone down the strech isn’t really true, he had one good game against the San Fran backup oline with a 4th string QB.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

TD Tampa Bay……..Thanks for the laugh.

  40. JimmyJack Says:

    A single game hahahahahaha

  41. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – That is accurate, he had a good game against San Fran and then he was OK in the others. He wasn’t a game changer, he just looked better as the year went along because everyone was calling him Velcro Vita in the first half of the season. Which is OK, he was a rookie DT, and they rarely do much. I’m really not dissing him, but if you had the choice of Vita or James right now, 32 of 32 teams are taking James. Vita will have to improve, a ton, to make it look even close to even – but again he was a rookie DT who showed promise down the strech so maybe he does that.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

Oh wait, JimmyJack, you weren’t talking to me… Nevermind.

  43. Ndog Says:

You people are ridiculous. Today we lost a slow slot receiver, a diva punk WR who was a quitter for us and a LB who is coming off a blown ACL and was one of the players with the most missed tackles in the league during his career. Yeah we just can’t compete without them. Again people showing how little they know about football.

  44. StoutGospel Says:

    Cool.

8-8 if lucky here we come. Said it 3 months ago, who at pushing 67, wouldn’t want a extra bag of loot, for retirement?! Who then, didn’t want, or could handle, losing his W2?!

So you reasonably combine the two, and you get….

    NOT John Harbaugh. Right?! Right.

    7-9 likely, 8-8 maybe.

    Is Lev Bell here?

    Nope.

Any true difference-makers here, since last season?? Nope.

    Re-read.

But we’ve hedged. Sat. Waited. Acquiesced. Those take…balls, right. 🙂

    Sure.

    Go Bucs!

    (Re-read, above). 🙂

  45. Ndog Says:

I’m a huge FSU guy and I didn’t want James before the draft and I don’t want him now. Believe it or not we are ok at safety not great but ok. Vea has a chance to be special at a true impact position where James as a safety will always be dependent on pressure from his dline. Vea was the correct pick unless he is a bust in the long run but that doesn’t look likely right now.

  46. Ndog Says:

BTW remember last year when everyone was crying about not trading for Robert Quinn? Yeah how did that work out for Miami and how did JPP work out for us?

  47. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

For real when did 7423 change to StoutGospel?

  48. Kyle Says:

There is a lack of talent on this team period. To think we will contend for a playoff spot next year is ridiculous. Regardless of the b.s., b.a is selling, this is not a playoff team. Come on buc fans, be reasonable and understand the league. The entire defense and special teams needs to be rebuilt. Both units were awful. Not gonna happen in a year. Look for BA to help the rebuild and Todd Bowles taking over as head coach in a few years. It’s all good, we have good coaching, but poor talent. Hang in there bucs fans, don’t get caught in the media hype. I hope we win 6,7 games in 2019

  49. StoutGospel Says:

[Seems you are the happiest person about this. Whew! — Joe]

  50. JimmyJack Says:

Rod sorry VitaV was much more disruptive then you give credit for. Maybe you didn’t see it. How bout you check out his QB pressure stats. Like hits and hurries. Those impact games.

  51. BucHead5588 Says:

Man y’all are freaking out for no reason you know how many players I love the very back and help this team damn I mean not only heard sanding the big flashy players the last couple years not work for the box it’s left us in this situation so how about we let the big wave go by and then actually get good players for a good price instead of overpaying for all these players white I love Kwon but he is not worth 13 1/2 million a year mothers a lot of these players what does first wave go by and watch the market settle and watch the box in a light do magic like they always do you think BA is in in in these new cultures are just sitting back thinking going to do nothing you guys freaked out way too fast it’s legal tampering. Which technically I guess today is the day of free agency it’s just not official till Wednesday at four but is a lot of things that can go home go down before Wednesday by four not saying will get the players that are links to other teams already her book signed the lease contract or whatever but theres trades there cuts To come relax and let’s Siri what these guys do freaking out because we didn’t get the star players everyone wanted where it hasn’t worked for us for the last couple years I’m ready to see us get good core solid depth I’m tired of having great players at the top and nobody behind us like Isaiah Johnson what’s our starting safety like no we need good solid players all around I’m pumped I don’t know if Kwon Leaving means we’re going after Devon white but I’m assuming Josh Allen and Quinn and Williams are going to be gone but why is in my top three players I want the box to pick a keeper in the floor for two middle linebacker Rohit someone at your pair up with me to beggar in court in Davis in Justin opens and you have a good solid core of young players throughout the whole defense now you just add Corbin around up

  52. Jeffbuc Says:

Man Licht has to be the best salesman ever. How do you have the second least cap room on a team that picks top 10 every year in draft because we suck. This might be a blessing that we had to sit out of this free agency though these guys are getting team cap killing mega contracts. But it just seems with are record and lack of talent on are team. We should be flush with cash. It just shows how all of his little beau Allen 5 million contracts here and there have killed us. Those guys are suppose to be are draft picks that are playing on rookie contracts. But since he is so bad at drafting we have to buy little depth guys for 5 million a year. And that’s the problem. It all comes back to bad drafting. And if your gm can’t draft the owners lawyers should be drafting termination papers. Just horrible to see the colts with 100 million cap and there qb is locked up to a huge contract. But guess what they hit on there last couple of drafts

  53. Kobe Faker Says:

“There is only 1 man that will save this defense and 2019 season…

Devin White will cure alot of Gumps sins

2019 Draft day will decide this franchise fate for the next decade”

    Kobe Faker

  54. JimmyJack Says:

Kyle I disagree……While the talent is a question it’s not the biggest worry.

The Bucs play bad fundamentals are beat themselves. It’s been this way for over a decade too.

The talent is irrevelant without fundaments bro. Not a problem Free Angency can fix.

  55. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Could it be that we DO have talent……and have had talent but it really hasn’t been utilized to it’s fullest or developed.
It is true that we have not developed any Olinemen……not really one….Pamphile is gone…..Benenoch may as well be…..our backups aren’t being elevated to starting positions….our RG, Dotson is 93 years old….
And….have we really developed our DBs…….Tandy is gone…..VH3?…..Ryan Smith?
The proof that we had talent is there with the Hump & Kwon contracts….or at least others think so.
    Maybe….just maybe….BA is right….we are a team loaded with talent….

For me….if we have any money at all…..put it into a Right Guard….

  56. Bucfan Says:

90 million combined for Kwon and Humphreys. I like them both but we would never pay that nor should we.

  57. Wesley Says:

This team is somehow getting worse. #firelicht

  58. Kyle Says:

Jimmy, would you agree that less talented players have worse fundamentals than the starters in the NFL? Isn’t that talent evaluation? I believe consistency is a pretty huge element to being a pro athlete so your argument makes no sense.hoge

  59. StoutGospel Says:

Ahhh…the skirts are at it, again. 🙂

The A.C.L.U. maybe one day. An action. Who knows.

🙂 Except, maybe one knows. 🙂

    Go Bucs! Land Quinnen.

  60. Kyle Says:

Sorry, spell check w hoge at the end

  61. JimmyJack Says:

I love this off-season becuse I have been the fan that said Dirk Koetter was no good. And y’all telling me hes SB material.

I knew he couldn’t win in these league when he gagged in Dallas in 2016. He drove the nail in the coffin when his team looked like they didn’t care the following week and got blown out by a division for.

Now the shoes on the other foot and I can’t wait to see what a real coach does here. Can’t wait and see y’all squirming trying to get back onto the bandwagon!!!!

First let’s get good then we can get great!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  62. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – I looked up the QB hit stats and Vita was 7th on the team, right behind Gholston, with 4, and had one more than Beau Allen…

Anywho I don’t know the pressure stats, where you getting them? Anywho Vita was OK down the strech, for a rookie. It’s encouraging, but there’s no way any team is taking Vita over James at this point. That would change if Vita shows a lot next year, then again if the Bucs go to a 3-4 he’ll probably just be a run stuffing NT, in which case it’s unlikely he gets even gets to his college average of 3.5 sacks a year.

  63. JabooBuc Says:

I have to think that today’s activities, or lack thereof, pretty much assures us that the Bucs will be trading down to gain additional picks. With the loss of Alexander I think that means we will draft White which is not a bad get. He’s a stud plug and play LB that will pair nicely with LD in nickel.

  64. JimmyJack Says:

Kyle I’m talking about team fundamentals.

It doesnt matter how good your best tackler is. How good is your worst tackler? Because if Alvin Kamara finds a seam there’s usually one guy who is in position(unless he is had bad fundamentals and out of position) to make the play.

If Miko Grimes is there he cant be wiffing and giving 80 yarders down the sideline.

If it’s Conte he can’t be getting stiff armed into his grave and giving up TDs.

Teams don’t win when their missing 10+ tackles a game.

  65. StoutGospel Says:

Mike Davis…2 years.. $6 million. Plenty affordable, like this guy said several times weeks ago.

What do you think, Steve and Lee (@Joes)?

    Huh?

    Go Bucs!

  66. JimmyJack Says:

Rod I bet you at least 8 GMs would take VitaV over Derwin.

Probably more but I don’t know anything about the AFC West or NFC West GMs

  67. JimmyJack Says:

But I will be fair. I never saw Derwin James play.

Just one time in his playoff game. I barely noticed him but just one game.

  68. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Rod, 1982 called and they want thier word back #anywho.

  69. CharlieB Says:

Y’all are hysterical. We’ve “won” free agency multiple times over in the last decade and we still play like garbage. Justin Evans and Jordan Whitehead are two players on the rise. Would Mathieu have been an immediate upgrade? Sure. But our problem was and has been a poor pass rush, weak corner play, and terrible gap integrity. It sucks to lose Hump, but a 2TE offense with Brate and Howard will serve us just fine.

  70. Defense Rules Says:

@TBBF … “Could it be that we DO have talent……and have had talent but it really hasn’t been utilized to it’s fullest or developed.” Yes we do have talent TBBF … just not enough of it. And yes, part of it is that some of the talent hasn’t been properly developed or fully utilized.

In a perfect world, some of the guys we had starting last year should’ve been riding the bench & been developed during practices. Unfortunately the Bucs had too many ‘holes’ AND were hit by the injury bug yet again (a perennial problem it seems). So they got baptized by fire … and we got burnt in the process. But still, some of them gained some very valuable experience, and good coaching can build on that.

I have ZERO idea what our record will be this year. Heck, we have no idea right now what our starting lineups will look like. But I’m really hopeful that BA & his coaching staff can at least get us started down the road that leads to better player selection & development, to improved performances on the field, and ultimately to being playoff contenders in the future. I don’t really expect BA to be our HC for more than 2 max 3 years, but I’m excited that this coaching staff seems to have long-term potential. Time will tell.

  71. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Derwin James or Mikah Fitzpatrick was the pick last year but licht doesnt know a thing about building an nfl franchise. He should have ranked vea against the 2019 DL draft class since its the best in nfl history, not to mention licht signed 3 DTs in FA last year that were of course garbage, just hope barry melrose arians actually coaches jameis or this might go bad fast, then who will get blamed?

  72. B-Rad Says:

Might as well do full rebuild and cut McCoy, JPP, Brate, Allen, Gholston, Unrein, Anger and you free up $50,400,00 in cap room. We can win 3-5 games without paying these guys using rookies. Draft all Defensive Line players & 2 good LBs.

  73. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jason Licht reeks of the Lovie Smith era

There will be no change in the Bucs until he is gone.

    “Simple as that”

  74. Tbbucs3 Says:

    #Bellorbust

  75. Kyle Says:

jimmy, again your missing the argument, i wont hold it against you because im sensing some kind of learning disability. i guess we can agree to disagree on the current talent level of our buccaneers.

Jimmy, i cant remember, how many pro bowlers or all pros did we have on the roster last year? look at some of the salaries our average starters are being paid compared to the league average. (this info is available online) we are overspending for average players, period.

anyway, jimmy please dont choke on your cheerios or poop your diaper.

    go bucs!

  76. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We had the perfect opportunity to develop Rojo, Watson & Cappa…..and blew it……we were forced to play MJ Stewart, Davis & Whitehead due to injuries or our coaches would have probably sat them out…..

Lets see what BA & Bowles can do……let’s also hope…….again……for the umteenth time.

  77. NOT JOE (Last request: Change your handle.) Says:

Y’all gonna miss desean … watch the numbers desean and Humphries put up next year lmao

  78. MadMax Says:

Yeah, he priced himself out of our reach, oh well 🙁

  79. Cobraboy Says:

Did anyone honestly think the Bucs had a shot at any of the “top tier” FA’s? Hell, this team, prior to moving Djax, had to clear $5-6 just to sign their draft picks!

I suspect there is some more dead wood to cut. I expect 2-3 signings of the second & third tier FA’s.

  80. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – I saw James play a few games and he was all over the place making plays everywhere. Regardless he’s an All-Pro, and you can not win an All-Pro honor by accident, it’s not the Pro-Bowl where a bunch of nobodies make it. All-Pro means you’re the best of the best, and to do that as a rookie, is incredible.

  81. Rod Munch Says:

TouchDownTampaBay – Anywho came back into style like 5 years ago, you need to get with the times.

  82. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

    no risk it no biscuit

  83. Rod Munch Says:

Fun fact: McCoy had over 5x the number of QB hits as Vita, in fact McCoy lead the Bucs in QB hits despite playing only 14 games.

  84. Rod Munch Says:

Good news everyone! The angry ginger is no longer the highest paid center in football! The Bills made someone called Mitch Morse richer.

So now how dumb does Licht look? No one can hold the highest paid center tag over his head any more.

  85. Adrnagy Says:

Let’s sign Brent Grimes and miko Grimes to boost the secondary!

  86. Jeffbuc Says:

Jimmy jack you are telling us bucs fans on joe bucs fan we will be crying to jump back on the bandwagon. Like any of us on joe bucs fan who are commenting and visiting countless times a day in the beginning of March are not die hard all in bucs fans. Yes I just come here for fun I hate the bucs and what there doing I’m done with them. Please oh please let us join the bandwagon again when you are right about whatever you hope your right about. Because if we are still on this website after 12 years of no playoffs I think all of us here are diehards and just want a winning team again. A couple of you would rather us lose and you be right about something so you can say I told you so. We all are rooting for the bucs to win. We all have are different opinions of what players suck to us what players are are favorites. What we think of coaches and have different times and things to be optimistic and pessimistic about. That’s what makes being an nfl team fan do fun. Everyone on here commenting has no clue what really is going on and what really is the problems or non problems. If a fan could figure it all out these coaches and gms wouldn’t be getting paid millions of dollars. That’s why we all have are opinions that’s why I come to this site to read comments and get the vibes of other fans.

The sad thing is that fans are disappointed…….upset that we haven’t signed any of these big FAs that have been presented on JBF for days/weeks…….when the true nature of our cap problems haven’t really been represented…..and we still have difficulties….
    Sure….make a move here…..make a move there….pick up a big time DE….a big time Safety or CB…..how about Bell?

We can improve….but it will take patience and some really smart decisions….it will take some time to develop the final roster…..and, it will be better than last year.
Unfortunately, I think we need GMC’s $13 mil to make that happen or at least some serious restructuring from him and a couple of other players.

I can’t believe the money being thrown around in Day 1 of FA. It’s stupid money for good, not great players. The Honey Badger is a personal exception for me. I think he is worth the contract he just signed. Sadly, he doesn’t really fit into our tiny, little, microscopic budget we have left. Hi Mr. McCoy. I’m looking at you.

  89. FR Says:

Who will we blame for not making the playoff again? If we couldn’t get to the playoff with all the talent we supposed to have had what do you all think next season is going to be like with a bust QB and a head coach who will re re retire once he sees he is in to deep.

  90. Elita Vita Says:

This whole thing looks bad to previous fans of Jason Licht (such as myself). The GM who handles the finances has spent all the loot with two 5-11 seasons to show for it. Was it poor math skills? Poor organizational skills? Poor negotiation skills? Poor player selections? Poor coach selections? Coming across like it’s plain old poor GM skills. Perhaps there is something I’m missing? I don’t know what else to think?

The Bucs have reached out to one player LB/SS Deone Bucannon so far. DC James Bettcher and the Giants will be competition. Go Bucs!

  92. Dave Says:

Welcome to cap hell. We have no money to spend. And we can’t even afford the players we have.

But we are supposed to be excited for the compensatory draft picks….even though our organization doesn’t know how to draft.

  93. Rod Munch Says:

Dave – Cap hell? LOL! I don’t think you know what cap hell is all about. The Bucs can literally just cut/trade some guys and easily free up $50m – that’s not what cap hell is all about. Cap hell is when you can’t cut/trade guys because you can’t afford it and you can’t sign anyone new. The Bucs are choosing to keep together the defensive line, because you literally build a defense from the defensive line backwards, not the other way around. JPP, McCoy, Vita and Nassib is actually a pretty good line, meanwhile you have three very young and promising defensive backs. We will see how it works out, but it’s not cap hell.

  94. Bucsfanman Says:

We could never afford him anyway.
Before we end up causing gridlock on the Skyway lets take a look at what will help this defense the most: THE OFFENSE!
Yea, I said it. Offense! Too often through turnovers and bad play-calling this defense was put in poor field position or simply gassed. Teams took a lead on us and squatted, running the football.
We can kvetch all we want about FAs but, what has FA brought us over the years? ZERO! We were still 5-11 after going crazy in FA.
This may go against the grain of most, but time of possession is a defense’s best friend. A balanced, turnover-free offense can aid a defense in keeping it fresh and on the sidelines. The opposition can’t score if they’re not on the field.
Now, would the Badger have been an improvement? Absolutely. It’s clear however, that the Bucs were not wise in bringing in the right FAs and it has impeded our ability to spend.
I, for one, believe that the greatest acquisitions came from the subtraction of the previous coaching staff. This team has proven year after year that it is a rudder-less ship completely void of leadership and accountability.

  95. Tbbucs3 Says:

Let’s not pretend the if the Bucs did have the cap space we would’ve signed a good splash free agent have we’ve had 5 years of evidence with Jason Licht and his philosophy of only signing meodirce bargain free agents.

I wonder why teams aren’t jumping on Vinny Curry?

  96. AncientAsBuc Says:

NFL teams are never cash strapped! If a player is really wanted, they find a way. The league hasn’t started and they don’t need to be under the cap until the season starts. No one is ever a free agent if they are really wanted. One exception might have Vincent Jackson and he had to sue the Chargers to make it happen.
