Landon Collins Won’t Get Tagged

Let’s face it, the secondary of the Bucs is — Joe’s being polite here — below average.

And in a division with Matty Ice, Drew Brees and even sore-armed Cam Newton, that’s a lethal brew for a defense getting lit up like a SpaceX rocket launching from Cape Canaveral.

Right now your starting safeties are inconsistent Justin Evans and hard-hitting Jordan Whitehead (Joe can’t say if Whitehead’s coverage skills are that good but the man can hit). Joe isn’t sure that’s a playoff-caliber duo.

Well, various reports out of New York suggest Big Blue will let starter Landon Collins test the free agent waters.

Yes, Joe understands the Bucs are in a salary cap pinch. They have no one to blame but themselves for building a losing team filled with top-shelf salaries. While Joe gets there is only so much the Bucs can do in free agency, Bucs fans should not be patient because the team painted itself into a corner.

Walk through that wet paint, buy a new pair of work boots and paint the floor again. What more does the team have to lose, it only has lost 22 games the past two seasons? If the team has to sacrifice a high-priced sacred cow to upgrade the secondary, so be it.

The Bucs made this mess so they should have to clean it up.

Collins, 25 and a three-time Pro Bowler, should be a cheaper option than Honey Badger and he would likely still be an upgrade over what the Bucs have at safety.

    Honey Badger!!!!!!

Gonna be a Colt in Indy! 1000% mark it down. Fit’s Ballard’s mold of what they want there in Indy, crucial to Eberflus’ scheme, good character kid that Ballard also keeps chirping about. Plus massive massive loot in Indy to throw his agent’s way.

    Reality check imposed.

Dude will be a Colt. Just speaking objectively.

    Go Bucs! Land Quinnen!

  5. Andrew Says:

Don’t know how we’ll be active in the safety FAs when Licht admitted MJ should be a safety. Meaning J Evans, Whitehead, and MJ Stewart are two 2nd rounders and a 4th founder invested at the position now. And we only have a whopping Vernon, Ryan Smith, and Carlton at corner.

  6. Buc4life24 Says:

We need this FA pick-up!! Get it done Jason!

  7. Maze Says:

Nah I bet Collins costs more in free agency

  8. Billy_43 Says:

Can’t afford Collins bringing back everybody we are bringing back!!!!!

Can almost guarantee we don’t draft Q Williams either because well, what I already said.

I have a good idea. Let’s just keep the same team and see what the staff can do!!

This is a pretty arrogant approach IMO

We need him and honey badger. I think that may be the plan too. It would be nice to see the older guys on defense be let go to grab Moseley, Collins, and Mathieu in one offseason. I’m still for keeping Kwon and I think he will stay for the low in the end. We gotta get a younger on defense and more talented and getting rid of pro bowlers for All Pros sounds good to me. Letting Djax walk for Hump would be another wise move at this point but Licht and the front office shouldn’t let this opportunity to coup young talent pass them by this offseason.

The cap situation is actually great Joes.

None of the big free agent contracts (that we had to sign due to failed draft picks) have guaranteed money this year and we can cut bait whenever we want.

Cheers to Mike Greenberg, be happy Joes.

    Landon Collins Please!

  12. Bama Rich Says:

Honey Badger, Collins, Dee Ford and C. J. Mosley = Top 10 Defense.

  13. catcard202 Says:

Collins is great in the box…Suspect in coverage.
Collins is going to want LeVeon Bell … = No Thanks.

For me…It’s the Honey Badger or bust in FA.
While also looking to target either Thornhill or Savage in the draft.

  14. Andrew Says:

Include Cam Brate in those numbers, Joe. He gone.

  15. 813bucboi Says:

collins will cost more….he’s younger and less of an injury history…..i would prefer him over honey badger but it all comes down to $$$$$$…..

the secondary has hasnt performed up to expectations because of 3things:

    -lousy defensive scheme
    -poor coaching
    -lack of development

bowles will fix those things and have this secondary playing above average by mid season…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  16. Dubcity06 Says:

Yes please. Him and CJ Mosely and I’m good

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Now things are starting to get interesting

  18. Zach Says:

Collins is about to get $12 million a year. Honey Badgers will cost about $7-9 Million a year. I don’t see us getting either.

  19. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Address Dline and Oline first and foremost , that is where winning starts and ends. Average corners and safeties suddenly become pro bowlers if your line has consistent pressure , and the same is true for RB’s that have a consistent line blocking for them. The creation of a good line on both sides of the ball is the secret to making all players on both sides suddenly look like they have dramatically improved. FOCUS on the TRENCHES.

  20. tnew Says:

This is still such a position of need. Problem is the Bucs have spent so much draft capital towards this position. They allocated two second round picks and a 4th round pick in the last two drafts for safety and they still need to spend big free agent money to find one. Can Evans turn into what they think? Will Whitehead take a huge step up in his role? Can Stewart transition into a functional safety? Or will the Bucs spend more money against the position?

  21. Bird Says:

He was rated as the top safety last year.

Guarantee he signs bigger deal then honey badger

  22. Bird Says:

He is ranked as the 5th overall all nfl free agent for all positions behind Seahawks safety Thomas who is coming off bad injuries.

I would take him over earl Thomas in a heartbeat. Younger too.

    12-13 range likely

  23. joestang Says:

we need to sign at least one free agent cornerback or safety.

  24. SammyRebel Says:

Expect a big wave of roster cuts within the coming week boys, oh we’ll be active alright, I guarantee JLicht dives in on Landon , he wanted him last year bc he saw him in our future, the stars are aligning Joe

  25. TexBuc Says:

No thanks on a Safety who’s weakness is pass coverage

  26. Easy Says:

    Pass on Collins

  27. BucEmUp Says:

I still think McCoy and Desean and Kwon will be gone. At LEAST two of them to free up space to work. Even Cameron Brate would save some money. Licht hasn’t even gotten started. If Arians says get someone he will make it happen!!!

  28. Rod Munch Says:

    Trade Brate, there’s $7m.

Cut your $3m punters, and now you’re at $10m.

$10m, for a safety, probably gets it done, and you’re not even getting to all those worthless defensive lineman that Licht keeps signing.
