“He’s Going To Have To Take Some Hits”

March 26th, 2019

Warning for America.

Attention to those who habitually holler, bang keyboards on various sites and throw beer bottles through their walls over the Bucs’ offensive line. Better devote time this summer to strengthening your vocal cords, limbering your fingers and learning how to hang drywall.

It seems the Bucs are going to stoke your fires with ample ammunition to go bonkers.

Appearing with a great friend of Joe, Alex Marvez on SiriusXM NFL Radio, general manager Jason Licht and Marvez were discussing Big Jameis, the proposed makeover by America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

In short, Licht confessed Jameis trying to bulk up to 250 pounds might be wise on his part because the Bucs expect Jameis to get bruised and beaten this fall.

“He’s going to have to take some hits in this offense, in Bruce’s offense,” Licht said of Jameis. “Like Carson [Palmer] did in Arizona, like Ben [Roethlisberger] and Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning, whoever [Arians] has coached has taken a lot of hits just by the nature of the offense.”

Licht went on to explain Arians likes to throw it deep, you know, “No risk it; no biscuit,” and because Arians likes to throw deep the quarterback needs to sit back in the pocket and let plays develop, which also gives defenders time to tee off.

So for the folks who like to weekly blame everything on the offensive line from the price of health insurance to the outbreak of measles, rest up. It appears you will get all sorts of opportunities to freak out this fall.

Translation: I have failed to draft and/or sign quality players on the OL.

  2. Defense Rules Says:

@Jason Licht … “He’s going to have to take some hits in this offense … whoever [Arians] has coached has taken a lot of hits just by the nature of the offense”. YGBSM … that’s NOT a strategy; that’s akin to suicide.

Taking a look at the Cardinals’ 2013-2017 offense results, BA’s offense got the best results when he DIDN’T get his QB’s killed.
    o 2017 (8-8) … 52 sacks – 6 TD rushing – 21 TD passing – 56.7% completion
    o 2016 (7-8-1) … 41 sacks – 20 TD rushing – 28 TD passing – 59.3% completion
    o 2015 (13-3) … 27 sacks – 16 TD rushing – 35 TD passing – 62.8% completion
    o 2014 (11-5) … 28 sacks – 6 TD rushing – 21 TD passing – 56.3% completion
    o 2013 (10-6) … 41 sacks – 12 TD rushing – 24 TD passing – 63.2% completion

For anyone who didn’t notice there, BA’s teams did considerably better when his QBs took the FEWEST number of sacks. And oh BTW, his early years winning records were due LARGELY to the Cardinals’ DEFENSE. Their average ranking (POINTS ALLOWED) from 2013-2015 was #6 in the NFL. For 2016-21017 they ranked #17 average.

  3. Bird Says:

This draft based on talent at specific positions this year . There were 12 positions they rated from best to worst.

1- defensive tackle (the best )
    2- defensive end
    3- offensive guard
    4-offensive tackle

Cornerback was rated the worst I believe at 11 or 12
So that’s the trenches right there where we have struggled.
They can get their guard and then go Dline and Dline and Dline.
Probably should go get Morris Claiborne since dB is weak

  4. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    @Bird

Well, at least the draft is aligning with our needs. Now go draft that kicker!

  5. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

On Jameis taking hits: Arians’ offense is similar to Dirk’s in this respect–taking a number of shots downfield. I don’t really see where he will be taking any more hits than he has already. Our biggest problem has not been pass protection, it has been run-blocking.

  6. JA Says:

    Defense Rules—

Good job. As a result you got me thinking. During your referenced time frame, the Cardinals gave up 189 sacks.
That seemed unusually high, but Palmer, who took most of them, is not exactly known for his mobility.
With that in mind, I looked up the Patriots sack totals for the same time period. They’re usually the best team whether we like it or not.
Here’s the head scratcher—with Brady, another immobile QB, only not known for throwing the ball down field, the Patriots took 213 sacks from 2013-17.
Conclusion: I’ll be damned if I know! Or, sack totals don’t matter as much as we think? You tell me …

  7. El Buco Realisto Says:

All Signs are pointing to drafting pass rusher with the 5th overall pick!!!!! After that, they will be looking for a running back, whether they have to trade up, or trade up from the 3rd round!!!! I don’t think that the Bucs will go into the second round without drafting a RB!!!!!!!! All the love for the rb smells of just a smokescreen!!!!!! A “real” running game and play action will help open up those deep developing routes without getting free shots at the QB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Anonymous Says:

The worst pounding of a QB, I can recall was the playoff game between Patriots and Bronco’s. Brady was hammered even with a predominantly short passing game, I find it a bit troubling that Jameis who is not known for his quick release will be expected to hang in the pocket as much or more than the previous regime. Our O lineman are not known for sustaining blocks, this will make it more difficult to make plays and avoid damaging TO’s. Also troubling is Licht’s apparent
willingness to let Kappa start this year. I hope it works out, but it seems like another Benonoch experiment to me.

  9. AlteredEgo Says:

BA…likes the long ball…..need I finish….anywho…after Jamyth starts throwing at OBP next week….rumors of the Bucs taking a QB @ 5 will start bubbling up

  10. Defense Rules Says:

JA … Head scratcher to be sure, but it looks like the Pats gave up 163 sacks in those 5 years (as opposed to the Cards QBs taking 189 sacks). I still think that sacks do matter, at least to the QB on the receiving end of those whackamoles. Palmer, Gabbert & Stanton must’ve felt like human pinatas taking those 52 sacks in 2017. I still remember a QB the Pats had named Tony Eason (drafted in 1983 AHEAD of Dan Marino). Eason was brutally beaten up … took 59 sacks in 13 games in 1984 … and developed what everyone called ‘Happy Feet’. So would I if I got sacked 4.5 times a game on average. He didn’t last long after that.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sacks matter…..but I agree with Realist……we have to improve our running game…..rather than a RB in round 2, I’d like to see an OG……

Improving our play-action will reduce the hits and open up the receivers.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Also, hopefully Leftwich/BA will choose to play action on 1st down on occasion instead of our predictable run up the middle (damn near every time)

  13. Justafan Says:

Defense Rules…sacks are plays, that the qb is hit before releasing the ball. You can throw a TD, and still get hit by the defender, so you need to add Hits to that data.

  14. JA Says:

    Defense—

I remember Eason. Also remember that was picked before Dan Marino in the in the renown 83’ draft—another head scratcher. I believe the Bears crushed him for three more sacks in SB XX before he was replaced near the end of the first half.

As the head scratching mounts, I counted the 213 Patriot sacks twice. That said, maybe I need a remedial math class if I was off by 50 sacks!

  15. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Didn’t koetter like a vertical passing game as well and isn’t one of jameis weaknesses getting the ball down field with the deep pass. This jason licht guy might just need to start doing comedy

  16. Loyaltotheend Says:

Maybe Arians isn’t as smart as we think if he doesn’t adjust to his pourous o line

    Sad

He was retired for a reason!!!!

  17. topcoach78 Says:

Duthsty that’s what I was thinking what’s the biggest difference in the offense when they both are so similar but share the same problem at QB?

  18. Buccaneerscotty Says:

This will be interesting because let’s face it like Winston or not he sucks at the deep ball…. imo

  19. Buccaneerscotty Says:

The more I see and hear the less excited I get…… hope I’m wrong…

  20. gotbbucs Says:

I warned of this before they hired Arians. His QB’s get killed. Big Ben got beat to a pulp. Andrew Luck got beaten so bad he ended up missing a year. Carson Palmer got destroyed weekly.

The only saving grace for this go around is the new roughing the QB rules. Hopefully we can expect 15 to 30 free yards a game when the inevitable happens.

  21. Loyaltotheend Says:

Same o line that gave up 41 sacks in 2018

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Realist & TBBF & Justafan … Most seem to focus on BA being the ‘QB Whisperer’ BUT … his QBs in that 5-year period averaged LESS than 60% completion rate. Jameis has a 4-year career average over that (61.6%). Drew Brees in those same last 4 years has AVERAGED almost 10% OVER THAT (71.2%). Heck Matt Ryan’s AVERAGED 67.6% completion rate in those last 4 years. Cam Newton’s the only QB in our division who’s averaging less than Jameis (59.9% completion rate) but he kinda makes up some it with his rushing?

BA’s 2 best years in Arizona (2014 & 2015) were when he had a strong running game (20 TDs & 16 TDs respectively), but even more-so when he had strong defenses (his best defenses were in those same 2 years). What amazed me was how low the opponents’ passing completion %s in comparison to ours: 2013 – 58.7% … 2014 – 63.0% … 2015 – 59.9% … 2016 – 62.9% … 2017 – 60.8% (Bucs as you know were a LOT higher than that).

My takeaway was that the Bucs will be toast this year UNLESS our running game ANDour defense improves considerably (duh). In looking at what we’ve got for projected starters RIGHT NOW, we NEED to fix (1) RG; (2) RB; (3) MLB; (4) CB then pray for zero injuries to our starters (our depth sucks). I know this draft is deep in DTs & DEs, but if we don’t fix those 4 starting holes prior to Training Camp, we’ll be picking #1 in 2020. And BA & his staff will have lost a LOT of credibility at that point.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

JA … Remedial math? (LOL … I tutor 2nd grade out at Dover Elementary so I get to go through remedial math twice a week). The 213 sacks was what the Pats defense laid on their opponents in that 2013-2017 period it looks like (unless my dyslexia is kicking in again).

  24. sunshine Says:

When did Winston become an accurate qb…especially with the long ball?

  25. Buccernutter Says:

Lmao look at all the people cherry picking ways to discredit Bruce’s coaching abilities and accomplishments

By far the dumbest fan base in sports. 😂😂😂. You guys are so dumb.

Especially buco realisto. 2019 will reveal answers to this dumb fan base that real fans already know. Buco will not eat crow when he’s wrong. Watch. 5 months to go.

  26. JA Says:

    Defense—

    “JA … Remedial math?”
I surmised you were into some form of teaching/writing by the simple observation of, correctly I might add, leaving a space before the three periods after JA (and only three …—another literary requirement).
I only mention this because I write novels and my editors chastised me incessantly for that transgression before I saw the light… I mean, “the light …”
As for the 213, I found that stat to be in an ambiguous column within the statistics of the website I referenced. Therefore, I’m off the hook!
As for JA instead of J.A., I do that to “blend in.”

  27. 813bucboi Says:

its a passing league….he’s going to take hits…..he just cant turn the ball over when he does….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  28. DB55 Says:

Was Luck playing under BA when he hurt his shoulder? Luck threw the second most tds last year with a beast on the oline. Coincidence?

  29. Joe Says:

    DB55:

C’mon man, you are better than that. BA only coaches Luck his rookie year.

  30. Bucsace Says:

Great…..So JW gets injured, thereby delaying the process of determining whether or not he’s a viable franchise QB…..more of the same BS

  31. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    JA,

Props on your posts. Always an entertaining read and great sense of humor.

    Cheers & GoBUCS

  32. MHBuc1 Says:

Glazer Family “Let’s fire the deep ball throwing coach and bring in Bruce Arians to save Winston.”

Licht- “Okay, Bruce Arians is a good fit because he likes throwing the deep ball, you know, the one Winston can’t throw?”

    Glazer Family “That’s cool.”

What a messed up organization, good lord.

  33. MHBuc1 Says:

The Onion is 50 times more credible than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization at this point. You fire a head coach the pushes the ball down the field to hire a coach that pushes the ball down the field. You then pay the QB who can’t throw the ball down the field 20+ million.

Are you following all of this commenters?

  34. JA Says:

    @Demon

    Thanks!

  35. DB55 Says:

No time to look stuff up anymore joe. After 8yo at my job I was laid off along with 1500 others. Now I’m at a call center (shoot me now) and it’s like a prison camp. If I have 5-8 min to read an article or two during the day I’m lucky. Tell me how great the economy is again, I digress. Gotta keep the kids fed and clothed though 🤷🏽‍♂️

  36. Issaic haggins Says:

? You have the # 1 overall pick sitting at QB going into his fifth year . Please let’s rank the o line that will be put in front of this guy !!!

Run Blocking – bottom five for sure

    Pass blocking – maybe 22nd

The Pats with a calico of players have never been here but the Bucs are year after year after year and in Lichts tenure not one area has been good and the o line hasn’t been either .

This is bad on allot of levels folks , look at the improvement in Indy last year and yes a similar performance to Lichts by Bozo Indy GM almost cost Luck his career !!

Offenses are predicated on you personal and your opponent not any one offense !!! At least if you want to win !!! New England’s O changes play to play game to game , don’t forget Randy Moss and Cooks thrives in this offense but only per the defense in front of them !!! Without Moss , Cooks, Gordon the offense still excels per what the defense allows . And And And this just In , Brady never gets touched because every single play is run per the defense and they will not allow the QB to get hit much !!!

So Again Licht thinks he’s excusing himself but really he’s just showing he’s a sht show on so many different levels !!!! I’m almost willing to pay admission for how dillisional Licht is becoming trying to get another check and cover phi’s bamboozled mess !!! Please Please Someone give the Guy a Nice BIG REDFOAM NOSE !!! My QB had better gain weight because he’s gonna get hit allot , Did HE really say this !!! UREAL !!! Glazers , Fire the GUY !!!

  37. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    DB55,

Sorry to hear the tough news brother. Sending you good vibes of things to get better & happier for ya in a hurry. Take care & GoBucs.

Been there and done that. From a broadcasting career that paid well and was exciting…laid off by a bean counting GM who took the station from #1 to #2 by a large margin.

Ended up stuck in retail hell at Burdines before finally deciding to drive a semi…best decision I ever made.

I feel for you bro if you’re in a call center…at least you can speak English most of the folks I deal with on the phone these days have a heavy Indian or Pakistani accent.

I’m with TB Demon on this. Good luck and no snark..if you’re willing to go over the road where the money is perhaps you might consider Roadway Driving School at the Fairgrounds. Worked for me but not saying it’s for everyone. At least you get your independence back and manage your own life.

  39. Dubcity06 Says:

Thats even more of a reason why Bucs should get Jawaan Taylor!!!!
