Letting Smith walk in free agency would have set this team back further than we already are. Our cap situation really sucks though. Not sure what Licht and A.B. have up their sleeves, but they have a lot of work to do. What once was a young promising roster, is inevitably getting older.
The cap situation really doesn’t suck, the Bucs have plenty of guys they can cut or move to create space if they can improve the team by doing so. Anywho Smith is a, as pointed out many times, an average LT, he’s middle of the pack, never misses a game. He got a deal that fits that description. It was a good signing for him, and for the Bucs, and not resigning him would have been incredibly stupid.
Smith is a serviceable LT. He’s not the best in the league, but I feel he is average to above average. I have no problem with him remaining here. Sure the cap sucks, but we have many old players with high salaries on the team that will be gone soon. DJax, GMC, JPP, LVD, ext. And now we have the most money invested into our O line in the ENTIRE NFL. If our line is not markedly improved this year we need to start making some personnel changes.
Everything I read about Arians’ predecessor (and company) has given me the distinct impression that we can’t take any of the Buccaneers’ “busts” or “JAGs” at face value. I genuinely suspect that players that looked like complete incompetent losers under the old regime may, and probably will, surprise us this year with better coaching.
Smith, RoJo, Hargreaves, Spence – I’m giving them ALL the benefit of the doubt.

Don_ryjo I agree I have a feeling several players will start looking like above average to pro bowler instead of below average to busts
