Bucs Release Defensive End Mitch Unrein

March 13th, 2019

Snapless stay in Tampa

Traumatic brain injuries are very serious matters. And that’s what derailed the career of now former Bucs defensive end Mitch Unrein, who was released today.

The Buccaneers, per their social media, released Unrein with a “failed physical” designation.

General manager Jason Licht gambled and lost with Unrein, who was a favorite of coaches last spring and very early in training camp. Unrein arrived in Tampa after having multiple concussion issues during his career. He was concussed during practice early in training camp and never suited up again. He was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 3.

Without knowing the technicalities surrounding an injured player, it appears the move saved the Bucs a few million in salary cap dollars, something the Bucs desperately need.

The cards are really falling for the ” licht did his job” crowd from last year!!!!!!!

2019 season will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. pick6 Says:

    easiest cut of the offseason

  3. Not there yet Says:

What took so long and why is licht not making more moves/cuts? Dude you need linebackers in a bad way. Who’s running this sorry pro scouting department

  4. JimmyJack Says:

Is the stick carriers the sheep or are you just one of those crazies on the internet?

  5. Doctor_berto Says:

    Can we cut Licht?

  6. Sam Says:

Feel for the guy but you definitely don’t want to mess with brain injuries.

  7. cspann Says:

    hopefully mccoy is next

  8. Bird Says:

The guy had a concussion for entire season.

    That’s serious stuff. TBI /CTE

Hope is knows his name a few years from now.
No one should be taking cheap shots on this guy.

  9. Adrnagy Says:

No brainer. But it took a lot of brains to do it.

I see Gerald being release next year I’ll be suprise If he get cut this year since the team mode is attack and Todd will take a chance of Gerald returning to his good days.

  10. JimmyJack Says:

Adrnagy. I would argue that McCoy is gone this year because we want a attacking desense. He doesn’t fit that mold, he is a finesse player.

  11. JimmyJack Says:

We need Hulk in that position. Hulk with his Hulk Smash move.

McCoy is not the Hulk he is The Flash with the spinner move.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

dont know how he last this long….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!!

  13. D-Rome Says:

Backstabbin’ Jason Licht sure knows how to pickem. Another failed free agency pickup during his 5+ year reign of terror. The freaking Browns have figured it out during the course of his reign of terror.

  14. Bucafan951 Says:

Hey realist, hit em with another realist narcissistic repost!

  15. jerseybuc Says:

Seems like every year we sign a guy who never sees the field. Tynes, Sweezy, Unrein, who is it gonna be this year?

  16. upthegut Says:

Licht is making Dominic look good!

  17. StoutGospel Says:

Licht has until close of business THIS Friday to at a minimum cut Cameron Brate!! Ain’t no way that stooge can spin that clause of fully guaranteeing Brate’s contract come Monday, AND trigger a clause allowing $18 million of injury guarantees to also kick in on that date, AND….a separate, additional $ million injury guarantee clause kicking in for the 2020 season….ain’t nothin’to spin!

    ALL ON MONDAY.

Cute Brate Licht!!! You can re-sign him, whenever you want later, and once everyone wakes up from their hangover to be able to compose and offer a reasonable contract with terms corresponding to a TE coming off hip surgery, and a #2 to OJ.

Cut him Licht, by Friday at 5:00.

    Go Bucs! Land Quinnen!

  18. StoutGospel Says:

    *additional $4 million 2020 injury guarantee….ugh.

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

Hope Unrein can get healthy for his sake. Multiple concussions not good for after football life. Good luck to him.

  20. SteveK Says:

    Preach, The Buc Realist!

Our GM is bad at GMing.

Schiano is a martyr, and was also shafted by the media/soft-loser mentality-players.

  21. AlteredEgo Says:

Sweeny only missed 3-4 in two years after leaving the Bucs

  22. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Sign
    Bust
    Release
    Repeat

    The Jason Licht expiriment everyone!

  23. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Unrein would be brainless if he signed with another team. This should be enough of a hint that he needs to retire. Forget about the money, your health is more important.

  24. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Stout

Quinnen is a great player but I have not read as single mock that has him falling to 5. Are you suggesting trading up? Just curious?

I’m glad we finally released Unrein…for his own good. I don’t even care about cap casualties, I care about his brain and CTE.
He should have retired a couple of seasons ago.

I’m 71 now and enjoying life. Having a scrambled brain would seriously interfere with Unrein’s golden years.

  25. Larry Woods Says:

From a guy who suffered a serious tbi overseas, I hope he is better now

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Saved them $3,750,000 against the cap…not even enough to cover the WR they signed.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Not there yet Says
“What took so long and why is licht not making more moves/cuts? Dude you need linebackers in a bad way.”

Clearly he’s being smart about it.

He’s releasing guys as he needs to, instead of broadcasting every need.

That isn’t to say he isn’t screwing up with who he has signed. He only did well with one unrestricted free agent…Smith.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bruce Arians is in complete control right now…not Licht. This is Lovie Smith all over again.

  29. Mike Says:

Licht probably has a side deal with all these busts he signs- come grab glazer loot, sit out pay 25% to my “foundation”
the ultimate insider con job- Aunt Becky on steroids!
Guarantee this guy signs with another team like injured Sweezy did!

  30. Jimmy Says:

I wonder who Licht will sign this year who even play for the team.

  31. Buc4evr Says:

Jason Gump sets the Glazer’s money on fire every chance he gets. Another stupid signing. Hell the fans on this board can trade and draft better than Gump. Now we are in salary cap hell. More cuts, more stupid Draft picks, it’s a Buc’s life…..

  32. Buccfan37 Says:

    Like magic.

  33. Steve in Mad Beach Says:

D-Rome, the Browns haven’t had a winning season since 2007!

How have they figured it out?

The Bucs have won the off season for years, how’s that worked out?

  34. Kevin Says:

He had decent stats in Madden 2019. That’s pretty much all we saw of him.

  35. WillieG Says:

I sure wish Licht would stay away from the scratch and dent sales.

  36. Kord Says:

Draft a replacement in the latter rounds, good luck to the man. Serious head injuries would be scary

  37. joestang Says:

another wasted pic from Licht, this guy is a wrecking ball, stop the bleeding and fire Licht.

  38. JimmyJack Says:

Jealous of the Browns. Y’all should be ashamed of yourselves.

  39. Buc believer Says:

If the Glazers like throwing away cas they must LOVE LOVE LOVE Jason Gump!

  40. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

The least JBF could do is run a farewell highlight reel of Unrein’s time as a Buc!

  41. Joe Says:

The least JBF could do is run a farewell highlight reel of Unrein’s time as a Buc!

    Here you go.

  42. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Unrein arrived in Tampa after having multiple concussion issues during his career.” I really wish Mitch Unrein well & hope that he sees last year as a real blessing and hangs up his cleats. It makes absolutely no sense to risk more serious brain injury by playing more football with his history of concussions.

And Jason Licht, please stop the ‘riverboat gambler routine’. You really stink at it. You’ve signed way too many players with injury histories and it keeps coming back to bite us in the arse, in addition to FAs who’ve had ONE good year instead of a record of consistent solid performance. And while you’re at it, stop carrying mediocre players on the limited 53-man roster who don’t contribute to the team. And if you can’t figure out who those are, go back and review the snap counts for last year & earlier. (Hint: It’ll give you a clue as to who isn’t contributing & who couldn’t even beat out other marginal players who at least ended up with some game-time experience).

  43. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Since the new league year started today we have added $11 million to our salary cap, which covers all of our draft picks and leaves a little left over. Any player cut now will only add to our ability to sign free agents. We won’t be getting any big name players but they’re still plenty of players available who can help our team. Not to mention a draft that is packed with top end talent. I really hope we can find a way to add another 1st or 2nd round pick.

  44. StoutGospel Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan..

    !)…Mocks don’t matter. Ever.

    2) Hell yes, if Quinnen is there at #4 with OAK, hell yes I would trade up from #5 to get Q all day every day. Use a 4 this year, and a 3rd in 2020 to move up one spot to LAND THAT GENERATIONAL BEAST that is Quinnen!! Without a hesitation. Then cut GMC the next day.

    Go Bucs! Land Quinnen!
