Arians Talks About His Old Target And Being “Concerned” About The Buccaneers’ Secondary

March 5th, 2019

Bruce Arians weighs in

There has been much chatter about Jason Pierre-Paul’s status with the Bucs and their new defensive scheme.

Heck, Thomas Bassinger of the pay-per-view TampaBay.com even typed up a deep dive into the value of trading JPP.

Jiminy Christmas!

Anyway, new head coach Bucco Bruce Arians joined SiriusXM NFL Radio recently and explained that he’s been chasing JPP for a long time. So it’s just silly talk to think JPP won’t fit with the 2019 Bucs. For the record, co-host Alex Marvez did not ask Arians specifically about JPP.

“We tried to get JPP a couple of years back and we got Chandler Jones instead,” Arians said of the March 2016 trade that brought the Pro Bowler Jones to Arizona from the Patriots.

“[JPP] can rush the passer. Gerald McCoy can rush the passer. We say we’re a 3-4 but we don’t two-gap anything. So is that a 4-3? Is it over is it under? Schematics, when you’re playing nickel 75 percent of the game anyway.

“Vita Vea, yeah, he can play. We got guys up front. Nassib had a great year last year. It’s that young secondary that I’m a little concerned. I just want to see that growth. I think some of those guys play press man-to-man better than they did off-zone. And we’re going to get in somebody’s face.”

It sure sounds like Arians would be giddy to work with JPP, McCoy, Vea, Nassib and a beastly rookie defensive lineman in the first round of the NFL Draft. But of course, Arians could be blowing all kinds of smoke.

That secondary? Well, Joe’s concerned, too, Coach. Arians guy Tyrann Mathieu would go a long way toward raising the level of play back there.

    lmao

    there ya go 813

  2. Brandon Says:

That’s funny that he said he wanted JPP back in 2016 with the Cardinals when his defensive coordinator was James Bettcher, the same James Bettcher that took over as defensive coordinator of the Giants this past season and decided that he didn’t need or want JPP who shipped him to the Bucs for a 3rd round pick.

  3. Jamaal Stanley Says:

Didn’t quite read it that way but okay. Sounds secure in his mind with what’s up front if you ask me.

  4. TOM Says:

If the Bucs were so concerned about the secondary why did they release Adams to save a paltry 2mil. Same ol Bucs. Keep making the same dumbass moves. I guess next we’ll find out that they franchised fat lazy ass D Smith for 14 mil. So much for the cap space. Liar liar pants on fire Licht.

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

    I am getting dizzy…51 daze…6 hours to go….

  6. Jamaal Stanley Says:

If anything those comments lead me to believe Greedy might be in play.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sounds to me that Arians plans to be extremely aggressive on both sides of the ball……GOOD!!!

  8. Jonzey Says:

I like Greedy but White is a beast

  9. 813bucboi Says:

    LC

    LOL….str8 out the horses mouth…..

obviously i agree with BA….put the CB’s in position to be successful…..

but instead of doing that, folks just want to toss ryan smith & VHG overboard KNOWING smitty’s defense was trash at best and only suited old man grimes…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  10. 813bucboi Says:

sounds to me like BA is throwing more shade on the previous coaching staff….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  11. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Donovan Smith 3 yr deal via the Bucs app

  12. SOEbuc Says:

C.J. Mosley, Tyrann Matheui, and trade back for Greedy Williams would be a freakin sweet a$$ move and could possibly totally turn this defense around. Get OG Chris Lindstrom and a DT/DE with the two picks in the second round.

  13. SOEbuc Says:

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smith 3 YEARS for $41.25 million and $27 million guaranteed!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3 YEARS?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARE YOU F#CKING KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SORRY BUCS FANS, DOESN’T LOOK LIKE ANY SPLASH MOVES THIS YEAR WITH NO CAP MONEY.

F#CKING ALI GOT $55 MILLION AND 27.125 FOR FIVE YEARS AND HAS SO MUCH MORE TALENT, EVEN IF HE IS A GUARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TOTAL BULLSH!T. THEY GAVE THIS GUY MONEY BECAUSE HE STAYS HEALTHY. STRAIGHT UP STUPID.

  14. Jamaal Stanley Says:

Not arguing wit you 813 but BA doesn’t srike me as a smoke type. His rep thru out the league is largely predicated on him being str8 up wit ya no cappin “walk-it like I talk-it”. He said he would sit DeSEAN and he did. They keep singing the praises of 93. I’m beginning to think he ain’t going anywhere. He mentioned wanting JPP a few years back. And gives props to Carl Nassib (my favorite whiteboy in the league,he a str8 German Shepherd dog!). I say all that to say this scratch Q,Ed Oliver and Josh Allen! From your minds, not drafting that high for aa part time player. 5 is plug and play day one stater.

  15. Blind Melon Says:

    “…And we’re going to get in somebody’s face…”

    Nice.

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

813- Sorry dude, but the only thing VHIII has shown to be good at besides being injured and getting burnt is the “Ne-Ne”.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    TOM Says
“If the Bucs were so concerned about the secondary why did they release Adams to save a paltry 2mil.”

They did not release Adams to save money. They did not release him at all. Andrew Adams is a free agent, and he only made $630,000.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Jamaal Stanley

ALL COACHES mislead during draft season. Don’t kid yourself.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

    bucfanman

how can you judge him if he was being put in position to fail…..

imagine winston running the ravens offense….the same one that lamar jackson is currently running….

he would look like a fish outta water…..why?…because he aint a running qb….same with VHG…he’s not a off zone CB…..he’s a man press CB….same with ryan smith….same with c.davis….

BA and bowles will show you better than i can tell you…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  20. Kobe Faker Says:

“BA dropped 40 pts on the Bucs on 2016 and 38 pts on 2017

He knows the weakness of the Buccaneers

We are talking about 1 of the top minds in the Biz…

    Klueless he is not”

    Kobe Faker

  21. Bucsfanman Says:

813- I kid, but you have to admit that there hasn’t been much to go off of. I would absolutely love for him to prove me wrong.
Time will tell for a host of different players. Maybe we have a whole bunch of guys that just re-emerge. That would make my little Buc heart so happy! Seriously!
You know I’m a fan. I just never really liked the VHIII pick to begin with. He’s a Buc though, so I’m a fan.

  22. El_Buc941 Says:

Coach Arians said it all in that phrase,”WE’RE GONNA GET IN SOMEONES FACE!” Ilove that attitude coming from coach Arians.Aggresive, tone setting,no remorse kinda attitude.

  23. stpetebucsfan Says:

Sounds like BA doesn’t worry about our DL…perhaps a pick later on in a draft loaded with DL. But if he wants the game changer on the backside it’s White or Greedy.

I like Greedy but not nearly as much as White. Fast MLB’s are great but I’m tired of smallish fast LB’s…give me the 6-2 240 sub 4.5 guy…it’s time for White.

Depending on where the QB’s go…one or two in the top five would really change the equation…the Bucs might be able to back up a couple of spots and still get White which would really be a home run.

Yeah I believe in the trenches and a great pass rush…but a BIG…fast..bone crunching MLB..with attitude…could really set the tempo for Bowles more aggressive D.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

    bucsfanman

its all good….time will tell….as much as i like the kid and think he’ll live up to his first round bill, he’s running out of time with the bucs….he has this year to get it right….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  25. SOEbuc Says:

No coaching since Gruden. Bring it on BA and staff.

  26. Ehinote Says:

I don’t who is on the board or who is on our roster… if Q. Williams, Alabama DT is still on the board… you take him. He is the best all around player in the whole draft.

  27. SB Says:

Greedy Williams did not look very good in his some of his drills at the Combine. Primetime was less than impressed.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

Well right now you have one starter, who is marginal (Davis), and one safety who is marginal (Evans), and a young guy who looked OK but who could be a classic deal of looking OK because everyone else is so bad (Whitehead). VH3 is too big of a cap hit to go anywhere, so he’ll be back, and hopefully if healthy he can be a solid nickel. But that’s a lot of if’s and marginal play. Davis obviously has the best bet to become something more, and saying he’s marginal doesn’t mean that’s all he’ll ever be, just last year he wouldn’t have started for 29 other teams (maybe he could start for the Raiders or Falcons, maybe). Evans looks good at times, but lost at others, which is why he’s marginal, but he too has room to grow. Whitehead concerns me, he reminds me too much of rookies who got forced into lineups because of injury, who looked OK but who then fall off a cliff the following year. Again, not saying I think that will happen – just saying I’ve seen it before and you can’t count on him to be a starter.

If everything breaks right, then you need just one starter at corner and you’re good to go. If there is a run on d-lineman do you take Greedy that high in the draft? If so then you slot him in at corner and call it a day. But man, that’s risky, and Licht needs to address corner in FA or via trade.

  29. Rod Munch Says:

SB – I don’t think Greedy is under serious consideration at #5, but he could be a guy if they trade back. Anywho I didn’t pay attention to the combine but that’s good to hear if they like him and want more of a value, but bad news if it really means he’s not all he’s built up to be.

I will say according to the stupid name rule that Greedy is a stupid name, and you shouldn’t spend high draft picks on players with stupid names. Like Taco Charlton. Some people on this board said we needed to draft him, I pointed out his name is so stupid he’d never be a success, there was just no way that our Lord and saviour would allow someone named Taco to make the pro-bowl one day. Well anyways Taco has already been labelled a bust, and that just shows the stupid name rule knows what it’s talking about.

  30. BucEmUp Says:

Its about damn time we finally get to see a real defense coached to play against todays offense.

Hargrseves and Davis will do well hitting at the line. I see White being drafted at LB.

  31. sandwichman Says:

    @Joe

U do the exact SAME THING! As much as I hate that newspaper, u guys tend to type garbage every now and then for clicks. U are just the lesser of evils.

  32. cmurda Says:

Trade JPP? He’s arguably the best player on this team. His only challenge might be Mike Evans. You don’t trade away a guy with his skills. Instead, you enjoy the robbery from the G Men. It helps heal the wounds from Licht’s lovely FA acquisitions.

  33. firethecannons Says:

I do not think any of us would mind seeing Devin White a Buccaneer. But Greedy Williams should not be anywhere near the the top half of the first round.

  34. Tc Says:

Go get these 4 impact players:
    Tevin Coleman
    Honey badger
    Devin white
    The penn state cb

  35. D1QB Says:

    SB,

One problem with what you wrote.
Greedy didn’t participate in anything other than the 40, no position drills, no bench press, long or high jumps, no 3 cones drill. He ran the 40 , cramped up, shut it down.
