Better Coaching?

March 20th, 2019

“I blame the beard on Chris Conte.”

The moves (and non-moves) by the Bucs the past two weeks or so seem to indicate the powers that be at One Buc Palace believe it was coaching, not personnel, responsible for 22 losses the past two years.

As Joe has been fond of saying of late, we will all find out which it is in a few months.

Well, in the mind of FootballOutsiders.com stats peddler Andrew Potter, he already knows why the defense was so horrid. It was coaching.

In a breakdown of Bucs needs this offseason (he listed cornerback as the biggest), you didn’t have to read very far between the lines to know Potter was no fan of former Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith.

For all the things at which the Buccaneers defense was terrible last season it is highly likely that much of the reason was a combination of bad coaching and an inexperienced secondary. […] Talent is not an issue on the defensive line.

The secondary remains young and inexperienced, especially after the departure of malcontent veteran Brent Grimes, but each of the prospective starters has shown flashes of enough potential that none of the spots is necessarily considered a specific hole. If former Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, reunited with his former head coach Bruce Arians, can add some schematic creativity in place of Mike Smith’s bland rush-four-and-cover vanilla, the Buccaneers defense could be much improved without an enormous investment in added talent.

Still, an investment in added talent would be welcome. Grimes’ departure leaves no clear No. 1 cornerback on the depth chart, and none of last season’s young players look likely to progress enough to fill that role by opening day 2019. Vernon Hargreaves looked much better as a slot cornerback than an outside corner in 2017, but Hargreaves missed too much of 2018 for anybody to be certain how or whether he has progressed. M.J. Stewart had a difficult rookie campaign, though Carlton Davis looks like he could develop into a long-term starter with some help from a better coaching staff.

Potter’s suggestion the Bucs don’t need “an enormous investment” in defenders seems to be playing out (this article was published prior to the free agency dinner bell ringing).

While Joe agrees the Bucs could use a corner in the draft — CORRECTION: an effective corner — an edge rusher is significantly more important.

No matter how you slice it, there really was no excuse for how badly the Bucs defense was coached up (or not coached up) through the past three years.

But the all knowing media and former players kept telling the fans retaining Mike Smith was the biggest move the Bucs made after the 9-7 season when knowledgeable fans saw his d was garbage in 11 of 16 games that year

Good coaches don’t hire their friends they hire the best coaches available. This is why the Arians hire has me worried as he’s repeating what Koetter did when assembling a staff

  2. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Unbelievable. Joe CHAMPIONED the retention of Smith back then. #Mondaymorningquarterbacking

  3. ChanEpic Says:

I remember many of us saying this same exact thing during last season. One cannot effectively evaluate the talent on this team because the coaching, not to mention leadership. was sorely lacking.

  4. SCBucsFan Says:

Many of the posters in this esteemed site can’t figure out why Licht isn’t signing big name, expensive free agents after this team stunk so bad last year while going into the offseason with many needs and little cap room. Surely this team needs those players. Who cares about a salary cap when like so many posters you can wear a dunce cap.

One has to wonder if this guy watched any bucs tape, or just read headlines and stats to form an opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!! There were many reasons that were responsible for the bad defense!!!!!!! And some just want the answer to be simple so the fix can be simple!!!!!!!!!!! My list starts with the decision of the GM , who was told by higher ups to build the defense around gmc so he can be jammed into the stupid ring of honor!!!!!!!! The DC wanted to hybrid defense and there was much practice of it, but disappeared when the supposively great gmc!!!!! Build and patching the defense that loser lovie started and doing a full rebuild hurt this roster!!!!! How many of the backup patches that were brought in were hurt and missing time!!!!! Wil Gholston had way to high of a snap count because other were in the tub, He was basically a starter thru the first quarter of the season with an all rookie secondary!!!!!!!!! 39%, 54%, 77 % and 52% of the defensive snaps is a recipe for disaster!!!!!!!!!!!! But the sheep will say its not talent, then in the next article will post a huge list of hopeful new acquisitions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The good news is, it appears that the new DC now has autonomy to switch schemes instead of being forced to run that patched up loser lovie defense that was in place!!!!!!! It only took 5 years for some to figure it out, but finally appears to be learned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope the sheep are not thinking that this transition will be seamless and instant results!!!!!!!!!!!!! Changing schemes rarely does, and they are further behind, due to the restrictions of a poorly manged cap!!!!!!!!!!!! And the unwillingness to gut the defensive roster and get what they can of value from the old players on the roster!!!!!!!!!!!! Was coaching a issue last year, yes!!!!! Were the coaches put in a position to win, Absolutely not!!!!!!!!!! Will the sheep support them when they realize that the biscuit is stale??????? Will Joe stop moderating the truth and realism that is posted???????????

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe I can’t disagree that taking a generational edge rusher at 5. I have to agree and have said this for months. We need to take a corner at 5. Greedy Williams is my choice. Tall. Fast. Look at our division. Allen or Sweat at 5, love it. But we would need to guarantee they disrupt the QB every time. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Low probability that happens. We need to be able to cover Julio, Thomas, and whatever scrub from the panthers that normally torches us

  9. zzbuc Says:

It was not ONLY coaching, were several factors not just one!!! Very bad Free agents Baker, TJ Ward,De Sean,JR sweezy,Vinny Curry, Catanzaro, Unrein, Allen…… poor draft picking, specially second rounders……
We will keep on blamming only coaching when JW turned the ball over sistematically? We will burn coaching on the bad ones but on the good ones is on the players???? Come on guys, its not ONLY on the coaches, players and Mangement are equally responsable……

  10. Buccernutter Says:

Looks like Mike knocked Tim Allen off his roof. 😂

  11. SnookTB Says:

Of course its coaching. We haven’t had a real head coach since Gruden. Nothing but clowns since then who were over their heads in the NFL.

  12. Loyaltotheend Says:

@Morgus when you are as wrong as much as Joe is and not big enough to admit you were wrong (Joe still defends wanting Manziel here) you deserve the criticism

Anyone thinking Arians and friends is come in here and fix a bad roster with coaching is not very bright. Bringing back the majority of 5-11 roster and expecting different results is insane

“But the all knowing media and former players kept telling the fans retaining Mike Smith was the biggest move the Bucs made after the 9-7 season when knowledgeable fans saw his d was garbage in 11 of 16 games that year”

Media always hypes moves. Just look at the Bucs free agent reactions. They’ve signed nothing but garbage, yet the media is convincing fans to buy in.

However, as to Mike Smith, I didn’t agree with his extension when he got it, but I understood it. Here’s why:

Mike Smith had been expected to do something with nothing until his last year. No defensive drafts and bad free agents. So I can understand that they wanted to see what he could do with some talent added.

Giving him a raise to stay was stupid. And he should have been fired much sooner in the season. But then again, the Special Teams and Running Back couches should have been fired as well. If Koetter would have been willing to replace his less effective coaches, he’d probably still be here.

  14. mark2001 Says:

Said two years ago, after the game that Jameis and Mike felt they had to take it upon themselves to deal with on the field issues, that the coaching had no backbone or discipline. I think we will see a completely different reality this year.

  15. Wausa Says:

The defense and special teams coaching has been terrible the past few years and the head coach made a number of questionable decisions along with being terrible at clock management in several games.

  16. Casual Observer Says:

Good synopsis, Joe. As you say, we’ll see. But I suspect that poor D coaching was the main problem.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

    i agree 1000% with this article……

been saying for 2years, the problem has been coaching/scheme not players/talent……

the pieces are there….and judging by the lack of movement in FA, BA and his staff agree…..theres no need to have a major turnover…..lol….sign a few FA’s, draft and develop……

the only thing that needed to be flipped was the coaching staff…..with better coaching, better scheme and more creativity we can have a bears/rams like turn around…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  18. Pickgrin Says:

Let’s just say the Bucs have a good bit more talent than back to back 5-11 seasons would indicate – and see what happens this year…..

  19. Dapostman Says:

Adam Gase and Bruce Arians were former head coaches who were hired by different teams to be a HC again.

Teams pursued Koetter after 2015 but not after 2018. Tells you what the league thinks of Koetter as a HC.

With an upgrade at coaching no reason this teams floor shouldn’t be 8-8 the first year.

When has Licht ever signed a big name elite free agent in his entire time with the Bucs? Not once. Desean Jackson does not count cause he’s been washed ever since he was with the Skins.

Salary count has never been a problem for the Bucs until this year (cause he ruined it). His philosophy of ignoring already proven elite players in free agency and signing only bargain players that he thinks will suddenly break out fails time and time again and it likely will this year as well.

  25. Joeypoppems Says:

I agree. I think most fans would agree with this. A true No. 1 CB is still a big need, but thats really it in the secondary. There are still vet CBs out there who could fill that role if they choose to go that route.

I also agree that pass rush is a bigger need. If it was up to me, Brian Burns would be the pick at 5 and i wouldnt think twice about it.

It just seems like based off of the things Arians and co. have been saying that Devin White is the player they are after. So I think he is the favorite to be the pick at 5.

  26. 813bucboi Says:

how can you judge a rookie like rojo when he’s playing for a HC thats on the hot seat?…..dirk didnt have time to develop rojo….or benenoch….he needed to win asap….

ryan smith was screwed over by smitty….kid played safety in college his freshman year….lol….3years playing CB and then when he gets to the NFL, smitty tries to turn him into a safety…..thats bad coaching…..then he’s switched back to CB which hampered his development even more….another bad coaching move…..

whitehead has talent…..he was one of the few bright spots from the rookies….

hold the coaches accountable…..they couldnt develop anything besides pass catchers…..and even they were inconsistent….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  27. Joeypoppems Says:

The JPP trade talk is also interesting to me. If it were to happen then screw Devin White lol. 2 pass rushers with our first 2 picks.

Brian Burns and Jachai Polite would be the dream imo.

  28. Jeff Diaz Says:

    @Loyaltotheend

If you watch the series on Amazon with the Cardinals you will see that BA’s Friends know how to coach. His Defensive coaches that he brought with him are in the series coaching up the DB’s and LB. They did a great job with a team and took that team to 13-3 with an awesome defense that year even with tons of injuries. I was worried about the same issues till I watched that whole season not like Hard Knocks which only shows training camp, this followed the whole year. Including playoffs.

When you say Bennenochs problem is coaching that’s when it goes to far. Have you seen Caleb Bennenochs legs? They look like toothpicks. It’s not coaching when he gets overpowered every single play.

  31. Alanbucsfan Says:

Not just bad D coaching –
Bad run game coaching and bad qb coaching – 26 interceptions from both qb’s is not just on the players

  35. rrsrq Says:

Coaches played musical chairs with the interior offensive line, Marpet, 3 positions in 4 years, Benenoch played better at RT than RG, Evan Smith and Kevin Pamphile, not to mention even practicing Alex Cappa at center, how can you de elope into a good player when you are always moving to a different position. It’s also a combo of drafting (Aguayo and MJ Stewart when there was better talent out there at the time), not closing the book on RJ, why because DK wouldn’t play Peyton Barber when he clearly out performed Doug Martin and also sat Devaonte Freeman for the Falcons when he was a rookie, or o am I closing the book on Spence, til we see him in a different scheme

  36. Bucsfanman Says:

Realist- WHY was GMC allowed to “dictate scheme”, IF that is what happened (I highly doubt it!)? AND, this GM didn’t draft GMC to begin with. So why would a GM or coach be beholden to a PLAYER whose name isn’t Tom Brady?!
I call bullspit! It is 1 MILLION PERCENT coaching.
Why? A “coach” is there to put his players in the best position to succeed. There’s a reason why you can’t name all 4 DL on the Patriots team. It’s not about the name on the jersey or where you were drafted. It’s on coaching to determine where a player fits in a scheme.
To prove my point, we added how many new defensive linemen last year to the 32nd ranked defense? What was the result? The 31st ranked defense. AND, it was only 31 and not 32nd because we fired the culprit….Mike Smith!
Of course there will be a learning curve and, of course we need to replace players. Whether you admit it or not, COACHING is the biggest improvement this offseason.

I couldn’t have said it better.

This is “Dunce Cap” Licht’s philosophy and the majority reason we suck.
You can also add drafting to this philosophy of his as well.

Jason Licht…the smartest “Dunce Cap” in the room.

  38. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Man Bucs fans and Joe are blinded with optimism. You only want to blame the coaching because that is the simple fix and it has been addressed. Lack of talent is the issue and unfortunately we will see that play out on 2019.

  39. Bucsfanman Says:

TDTB- You are not wrong regarding talent. It still boggles the mind that Licht is still GM.
However, the talent we do have was not maximized or developed to its potential. For instance, ‘press corners’ playing in off-coverage or DEs too light to play on the line but not experimented as LBs. And SCHEME, don’t even get me started on scheme.
Coaches make adjustments. Let me re-phrase that: GOOD coaches make adjustments. That goes for talent and scheme.

  40. MHBuc1 Says:

…..Yeah, not the exorbitant amount of turnovers by QB’s who make Santa Clause look like the Grinch.

  41. MHBuc1 Says:

    P.S. Joe …..

How many coaches will it take for you to see it’s not the coaches? 10? 20? How many coaching changes? This is beyond silly at this point.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

A DE that takes 2 years to develop, or a day 1 starting corner?

Since Licht seems determined to not address the issue at corner, if you draft another d-lineman this year, then it means the defense is again doom to be somewhere between 30-32. The defensive line got pressure last year, but when your corners were playing 10 yards off the LOS the QB could just take 3 steps and throw it to one of a half-dozen wide open guys.

The downside to playing corners up, is that the corners stink, and if you come up and try to jam, good WRs will blow right by them and if the line isn’t there in 5 steps then you give up big plays downfield.

I don’t disagree with the fact you don’t take a corner in the top 10 unless they are truly a special talent, meaning that they’re elite, but if the Bucs don’t get a #1 corner in FA then you’re going into the draft with next season hanging on who you pick with that top pick.

  43. D-Rome Says:

If it wasn’t for that five game fluke the Bucs record over three years would have looked even worse.

  44. BucEmUp 7 Says:

I said it the day he was hired he would be the death of the entire staff in tampa.

  45. BucEmUp 7 Says:

I agree with the joes edge rusher is the biggest need but man its hard to pass on white. Can we trade up and take him WITH A PASS RUSHER???!!!!!

  46. Polkfan Says:

With two young safety’s Whitehead , Evans I don’t believe safety is a need, With Lvd and Buchanon as Ilb I don’t think that’s a need as of rn. With Jpp , Nassib starting 9 games with 6.5 sacks , shaq Barrett and Noah Spence playing his right position now I can’t see this as a huge need. At Cb we have Carlton should improve as a 2nd yr starter Vernon if Healthy mans the slot , On the other side of Carlton we have literally nobody. Greedy – 6’2 with 4.3 speed with long arms and prefers to play press would fit Todd Bowles scheme like a glove. With this current Cb situation Julio and mike Thomas look at game day vs us like thanksgiving.

I was disappointed more by Lovie Smith than any of the other coaches after Gruden. When he came I thought that a year off would have him refreshed and rededicated to his coaching career. I naively thought he would have spent the time asking himself what he could improve upon and would have a well thought out plan.

Instead he seemed to be all over the media with advertising right away and many $ generating efforts. That plus some nepotism also. He “milked” the Buccaneers for all it was worth to him.

He departed with that mission accomplished in my book.
