Arians Explains Part Of Jameis’ Deep-Ball Woes

March 1st, 2019

The quarterback whisperer got a little technical when talking about the misfiring between malcontent DeSean Jackson and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Bucco Bruce Arians himself laid it out for Joe and other media at the NFL Scouting Combine this week.

“It’s part fundamentals and it’s part looking safeties off too long,” Arians said of the deep-ball failures between the two. “Alright, your release timing for Mike [Evans] and then you try to have the same release for DeSean; DeSean is 10 yards farther down the field. Alright, now you’re heaving it, you’re not passing it. So just little things of getting it out of his hand faster. More work on the practice field. You know, we’ll do a lot of deep-ball drills and then the guys know that they’re not going to run for a while after that drill. We need to work full-speed on this thing right here.”

Not much more to add there. Arians laid out one of Jameis’ shortcomings — and what feels like a coaching shortcoming of the previous staff.

However, Joe can’t see the logic in investing in all that chemistry time for Jackson and Jameis.

Jackson turns 33 in December and this is the last year of his contract. If he plays reasonably well in 2019, the final year of his contract, then he’ll want outrageous money in 2020, the kind the Bucs won’t be able to afford under the salary cap. It just doesn’t make sense, especially if you factor in Jackson’s stated desire to play for the Rams and his assorted other nonsense.

For the past three seasons have we not read here that the deep passing game was not and is not Jameis Winston best skills set? And how dated the deep passing game is. Now that we have our new HC BA we are all for the same type deep passing game? Is Mr. Einstein in the room? What is the difference between DK deep passing game and BA deep passing game? Who again will be the guy throwing those same style deep passes? Let me guess the same guy we read about who is not a very good deep passer. Should we expect different results? Here is to the future, let’s hope we do not repeat our past.
Yes I know BA is not DK but the vertical passing game that they both use is very similar.

    Go Bucs!

Other than the offense struggled w Jackson off the field , there is no # 2 receiver if He Gone and your trying to win this year not next next year !!

  4. JabooBuc Says:

Wait, I thought Jackson said he didn’t like to go all out in practice?

  5. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I truly believe the coaches Koetter assembled, aside from Monken were horrible. Excited to see coaches that know how to play the game and teach these young minds. The coaches alone will increase our winnings by 3-4 games this season.

  6. Stanglassman Says:

Godwin is a #2 WR all day long. Bring in John Brown or draft a guy who puts in the effort and doesn’t try to divide and quit on his team.

“we’ll do a lot of deep-ball drills and then the guys know that they’re not going to run for a while after that drill. We need to work full-speed on this thing right here.”

It’s getting tiresome reading things while thinking “Wait. they dont already do that?!” Like getting a kicking coach.

What were they doing during practice the last three years? Playing with their big sticks?

  8. AlteredEgo Says:

    I hope BA can correct Jameis’s flaws…..but as I say..”There Ain’t No Hope in Football !”

  9. Iron Wombat Says:

“More work on the practice field.”

Sorry DeSean’s just not that into practice.

  10. El_Buc941 Says:

@OneBuc55 Maybe DJax started giving up on his routes because he already knew the time frame in which Jameis should’ve released the ball. Kind of like when you open your mouth to drink beer.you don’t open it before because you’ll look like a fool sitting there with your mouth open and you don’t wait to open it because nothing will go in.

  11. Bobby M. Says:

Maybe Arians understands D-Jax creates incredible spacing for the rest of the offense….It was pretty obvious when D-Jax was out, the offense was less fluid. Arians certainly believes he can coach up anyone.

  12. AlteredEgo Says:

Maybe after drafting Dwayne Haskins @ 5….Jameis can learn by watching a proven deep baller ….you know the ole “iron sharpens iron”….and as others up thrae have said…DJax only appears to give up on some deep balls….he knows when a ball is uncatchable, he has had plenty of experience with that at OBP with Jamyth

  13. Pick6 Says:

So after 2 seasons of the prior regime watching this, it took a new staff how many minutes to pick up on a coachable improvement for Winston’s deep ball issues? And based on how BA talked about resting after deep ball drills, it sounds like a big part of DJax’s issue wasn’t just how he was used on Sunday but the team’s plan for him during the week

  14. Bucsfanman Says:

Yep, nobody to blame but the WR. Typical!

Bobby M.-Great point! This offense was noticeably different and it is NOT a coincidence.

    Yup.

More Deep balls drills would be nice. I can’t imagine though they weren’t practicing this with prior regime people.

Desean may actually stay. That’s crazy. Thought he was a goner for sure.
Can’t imagine they toss fitz aside who was not good for Jameis
Yet they won’t toss DJax who apparently was not good for Jameis

  18. BrianBucs Says:

  20. Reece 3 Says:

As a life long Bucs Fan and having a couple friends on that Super Bowl team I have to admit that I’m very excited about this coaching staff and the true NFL Experience it comes to the table with. There history between Winston and BA as it was with DK but the major difference is EXPERIENCE. Jackson sets aside his selfishness and practices with Winston and the possibilities are great. They are both winner’s and the old saying is practice makes perfect. We have all the pieces needed to be much better. We need to fill a few holds and we’re on track. I know TD (Tony Dungy) is loving this move. Go Bucs

  21. JustaBucsFan Says:

Defenses already know Jameis isn’t a deep ball threat, but if we get rid of Jackson and don’t run the deep route to pull the safeties (in the rare occasion he hits a deep route) the odds of picking James off increase tenfold.

Hey if bruce can get 10 wins out of this roster I’ll be the first to say I was wrong

  24. TexBuc Says:

Both BA and DK run the 4 vertical offense. Ways to get completed passes: play-action run effectively enough to get defense to expect run and then throw, misdirection get defense to eye motion and throw to where defense does not expect it, call plays that will give advantage to offense I.E. against zone flood zone with receivers and against man use motion handpick plays to get receiver open, have QB audible at line of scrimmage to change play, and call screen plays to slow down pass rush to allow the QB that extra second to complete throw.

What does all these basics 101 of offensive playing have in common? DK rarely used these basic technique. DK preferred to rely on tendencies of relying personnel packages dictating which play was coming and worst of all relied on his offensive plays beating the defense. DK routinely called out Winston when he changed the play even if it resulted in a TD.

Just as a boxer cannot just try for a knock out just using a right hook and not use the jab, Bucs cannot just take deep shots without using football 101 basic concepts

  25. AlteredEgo Says:

Stand off on Dale Mabry….BA thinks he can correct Jameis’s many flaws and Jameis thinks he can make every backyard/flag football throw whenever he wants

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Both Djax & Justin Watson have run 4.35 40s………

The difference in salaries is $9,430,000…….

Now, I’m not saying Watson is as good as Djax……but the attitude is better and the potential is there…..let him stretch the field and let Djax go.

  27. Buccernutter Says:

    ASDF

That’s just not true. In fact I’m surprised I haven’t seen anything about this but I read an article out of Washington in Kirk’s first season with djax that they couldn’t connect and it was frustrating djax. It took til after midseason for them to start rolling.

What is true though, is jameis doesn’t have an issue with anyone else. Godwin is self explanatory, hump is self explanatory, oj was the highest ranked te last year, Mike is a top 5 receiver. Even Bobo and Martino did work with jameis.

Yes Winston struggled with djax. Some of it was his fault but some of it was on djax too and that’s just undebatable.

This fan base SMH. Everyone is either strongly for or against something. Never open mindedly in the middle that utilize facts to draw conclusions.

  28. Bucnjim Says:

There really is little sense in tipping your hand on what you plan on doing with any of these players. Whether under contract or not some of these guys have a greater value to some teams than others.

  29. 813bucboi Says:

sounds like BA is suggesting the previous coaching staff didnt practice fundamentals and technique with winston….

seems like under dirk, during practice, it was: run the play…it we connect whether the technique and mechanics were wrong, good on to the next play…..which further creates bad habits….and if they missed with bad technique and mechanics it was, do extra reps after practice…..which never helped because the mechanics were still poor…..

happy to hear BA say something besides, “we have to play better”….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!!

  30. Hodad Says:

He’s talking about practicing the deep ball at full speed, D Jax doesn’t want to practice at any speed.

Do yourself a favor and learn computer programming, that way the next time you right something it will actually be productive, unless you write crap code like your crap stories and which case may be get a life coach?
Thanks for the take. LOL. Actually, reader engagement metrics on JoeBucsFan.com are some of the very best in the entire sports industry across the country. This article is pretty much stating that Fitz can do it, but Tampa Bay Quarterback, Alternate Pro Bowler, Jameis Winston can’t. That’s sad.

Also, quit blaming coaching staff for Jameis not knowing this already. You Winston lovers have always talked about how he lives in the video room and works so hard, yet he couldn’t figure this out? Get out of here. He is who he is.

If Watson is just as fast as Jackson and Watson is not a prima dona nor a cancer in the locker room nor a constant whiner, and will lay out for a pass too long and will knock a pass down too short to stop an interception, and Jackson has a very high cap value and Jackson hates to practice, then logic says dump or trade Jackson.

Alteredego is smoking something heavy this morning. You think drafting a quarterback at 5 that you have to help adjust to the NFL game helps this team at all? Never mind the fact that BA is already all in on the kid he’s known since the 9th grade. This is where your clearly trolling Winston but pretending to be a bucs fan. What BA said about the issue with that one receiver made complete sense and heaving the ball to someone to far downfield will never be an accurate pass. He actually has a coach that will fix fundamentals and not make him do things he can’t do so he’ll improve and saying he won’t just makes you a hater. Damn called a hater and a troll in one post, I don’t want what your smoking today it could be lethal. BA knows a little bit more than you ever did so I think we’ll stick with his opinions on this one besides the decision on Winston has been made so move on

WRONG! Godwin is 23 under rookie contract with about 900 yards and 13th in TDs being banged up the entire year.

This is why I hate the “bring back DJax BS.” We have a very good young, tall, long, strong #2 WR with hands in Godwin. No need to pay a second 33 year old #2 WR $10 million.

  51. BringBucsBack Says:

BA said that #3 is taking too long to release the ball to DJerk. I could have told you that two years ago and I’m not a QB whisperer. He always throws it too late (and with a poor trajectory)!

However, #3 looking off a safety was news to me.

  52. calbucsfan Says:

Watched the replay of the Bucs-Giants game the other day on NFL Network. Jameis comes in and takes the team on 4 straight 2nd-half TD-drives after Fitz Magic fizzled.

Fast forward to their last possession after the defense couldn’t stop the Giants from scoring yet again. Roughly 20 seconds or so to go in the game and from the 20-yard line Jameis airs it out to DJ down the right sideline. It ends up being what could have and SHOULD have been a jump ball battle between the Giants safety and DJ around the Giants 40-yard line, but instead, as the safety goes airborne to intercept, all DJ does is give a real feminine-type slap at the safety’s arms and runs past him, he doesn’t even go up to try to catch or break-up the interception! 14 seconds left and game’s over. Ideally he catches the ball and wrestles out of bounds to have a chance to kick a field goal to tie the game. If not, he could have at least broken the play up to give Jameis at least one more play, whether it be a Hail Mary. Guarantee you Humphries, Godwin, Evans, even Wilson or Watson would have laid themselves out to come down with that ball or make sure it hit the ground.

DJ may be a physically gifted athlete, but it’s his core that isn’t the problem. And no amount of Arians sweet-talk will ever change that. Please Licht, trade him!

  53. calbucsfan Says:

Mistype above, it IS his core that’s the problem!

  54. stpetebucsfan Says:

What do we call a “bomb”? Seriously. If the QB hits the WR 15 yards downfield and he races to the end zone is that a bomb?

Or does the ball need to be thrown 50 yards through the air ala Aaron Rogers?

JW played much better the final six games including the game where he hit ME13 at the very edge of the end zone from more than 30 yards and then repeated the same highlight with Godwin from 20 yards. These were spectacular passes!!! Highlight reel throws that could only be caught by ME or Godwin with no chance of int and highlight catches by our WR’s who were tip toeing the OB line in the end zone.

I’m not worried about JW not hitting the “deep ball”. The %’s on throws that are up in the air for more than 40 yards are low for the best QB’s. The league is full of incredibly fast and talented DB’s who can close on balls that deep.

  58. louis Says:

Its a matter of wanting it, and Djax just don’t give 2 craps about it, his contract is in place and he just wants to go through the motions in practice. You practice the way you play, and if you practice poorly, you will play poorly.
