Arians: “Bucs Don’t Beat Bucs”

March 7th, 2019

Disgusted by film

New head coach Bucco Bruce Arians said he’s evaluated film from the past three seasons and he sees a Buccaneers football team that wasn’t very smart.

The take earned him an ovation at One Buc Palace this week.

Arians and his coaching staff had a sitdown with in-house team reporter Casey Phillips before select fans in the Team Glazer Dome on the practice grounds of One Buc Palace.

Phillips asked Arians what fans should be excited to watch from the Bucs this year at home games. The new sheriff in town didn’t hesitate.

“First and foremost, Bucs don’t beat Bucs,” Arians said. “Alright, penalties, pre-snap, whatever it is, we have to be a very smart football team. And watching what we’ve done in the last few years going back and evaluating, we can be a better smarter team finishing halves and finishing games. There are games to be won. And most games in the NFL are won in the last two minutes of the half and the last two minutes of the game. And we have to be a very smart team in those situations.”

And then came the applause.

Man, Joe and most fans have been yearning for a head coach who simply won’t tolerate the nonsensical sloppiness from the Bucs, which was a veteran team last year.

Normally, fans don’t get excited about clearing up sloppy football, but in Tampa, you better believe that thought is exciting.

Arians talks the talk but can he really deliver a disciplined football team with guys that are used to sloppy play? I hope so.

  2. Joeypoppems Says:

Man BA is just killing it so far this offseason. Everytime he talks he gets me excited for the season.

  3. Not there yet Says:

Doesn’t matter what he will tolerate if he’s going bring back a team full of not very smart football players. Dirk Koetter was losing hair trying to figure out why his guys couldn’t perform when it mattered most. Starting to feel sorry for BA, hope he can make it through training camp with this bunch

  4. Anonymous Says:

Thanks for stating the obvious, coach

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

I am sure Koetter said the same thing…thing is after the coach leaves the room the real leaders need to take control and that can be ugly and hurt feelings….we have not had that in many years…too much of “not my job”….JPP is a start but need a few more especially on offense

  6. Dapostman Says:

The first rule in any sporting competition is DON’T BEAT YOURSELF.

If you are a pitcher you must throw strikes. You can not walk batter after batter and expect to win. Same with football penalties and turnovers. Simple concept that has been around forever.

It’s been a long time since the Bucs have heeded this advice.

  7. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

I think BA will do better for the simple fact that after looking at the tape…he saw WHAT WE ALL SAW, but apparently the previous coaches either did NOT see it or didn’t care.

Sounds like BA see’s it, and he cares to stop it.

  8. Pugs&Bucs Says:

Keeping McCoy, re-signing Dotson, Smith, keeping Winston, praising Peyton Barber, attempting to smooth the waters with Jackson… he must TRULY believe that this team was POORLY coached and operated to not want to blow the whole thing up. At least he’s set a path and (for now) he’s sticking with it.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sometimes all it takes is a change in leadership……keep in mind there is a complete change with the entire coaching staff and this one is larger……

Koetter said…..turnovers are killing us. BA said….we’ll cut down on turnovers…..and the players & fans believe him and that may be all that is needed.

  10. Jean Lafitte Says:

It’s amazing how confident a head coach can be when he’s not worrying about saving his own job. It does make a difference. Perfect example was last season how Koetter seemed reluctant or less inclined to work with less experienced players. He just didn’t want to take any chances. Bruce, he’s a different story. He’s not worried about being fired so he’s more inclined to lean toward giving younger players more reps. I believe he’s in a stronger position to get more out of returning players than a coach with a target on his back. Let’s hope so!

  11. 813bucboi Says:

damn…i forgot what a real coach sounds like….lol….

got tired of hearing,”we have to play better” from dirk and smitty….oh sh!t we have to play better but how…..previous staff never could figure it out….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  12. DBS Says:

They all talk the same talk when they get here. And they last how long and gone?
Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Where cooaches go to get fired as fast as they get hired.

  13. topcoach78 Says:

We will see if he keeps that same energy when Jameis throws 25 picks!

  14. Jeffbuc Says:

Stop with the negativity top coach. You don’t think jameis is going to play a lot better when we actually change are game plan every game for are opponent. Rather than just running koetters offense no matter the scheme of the opposing defense. . Why do you think we sucked so bad against 3-4 teams because are coach didn’t change anything so all are underneath routes that are usually open now have a linebacker sitting on it. We have a real coach who will now make halftime adjustments and we will come out both offensively and defensively looking totally different in the second half. And I bet we don’t hear one player next year say the other teams offensive or defensive players kept saying all game we knew exactly what you guys were going to do. You didn’t change one play.

  15. Couch Fan Says:

he must TRULY believe that this team was POORLY coached and operated to not want to blow the whole thing up.
    ————
Exactly. And I do to. Ive been saying this much for awhile now. Its not all coaching, we do need some new pieces but it was mainly imcompetent coaching. Thats been clear to see on Sundays as well.

  16. Jeffbuc Says:

And we see every year a new coach comes in and takes pretty much the same team he took over with a few additions and goes from worst to first in there division. Coaching is huge in football just ask the New England fans what coaching does. Look at the rams Goff was thought to be a huge bust his first year. Then his second year with a new coach and pretty much same offensive players he was a stud. Happens every year. I think good coaching alone can get you 4 more wins a year. And when a group of players loves there coach and believes in them. They play with a little more edge or hate this word swag. And then the confidence takes over the team. And before you know it your 7-3 and rolling. And you can actually hear the bucs being talked about on nfl network. For good things. I am really optimistic this year because of are coaches. It’s not some retread who was fired from his previous job for failing. He is a two time coach of the year. Who had a better record in his last year in Arizona than koetter had last year. And he was starting qbs who had no business even being on an nfl team do to injuries. And he still went 8-8. We need one good defensive end in the draft one decent linebacker and one average gaurd. And throw in a true return specialist to help with are dismal return game. And we can be a playoff team

  17. Issaic haggins Says:

McCoy has tolerated it with a smile and has never in my opinion lost a minute of sleep !! Yes he knows all the right media things to do or say but that’s all clearly an act !!!! Nice fake guy has to Go !!! No Way he Stays No No No Way !!!

Thanks for posting the dumb, Anonymous.

  19. D1 Says:

    Jeffbucs,

I agree with your idea. But the reason why the team struggled against a 3 4 wasn’t DK’s offense . First, loom at who runs the 3 4 and then look at how high they were rated.
IOW, those were the best teams we played and no surprise they played well against the team.

Second, 3 4 teams presented the o line with protection issues. And our newly acquired center didn’t know the right direction often to adjust and the team work between center and both guards was horrific. Pressure up the middle shuts down Fitz as he has trouble moving laterally. Winston doesn’t have mobility issues his problems with the 3 4 were pressure and he couldn’t identify were the pressure created an opportunity.

Funny you mention the Rams as McVay made zero….nada…adjustments in the super bowl.
Biggest game of his career. Point is, McVay, in your mind is genuis, DK a stooge., when they both do exactly the same thing. Btw, the worst coach rep wise for in game adj and decisions..
A great coach by the name of Andy reid. Game adj, is a very very small part of what makes a great coach. However, in Buc land you’d think game adj is the single most important thing a coach can do…..fing retarded. ….But that’s bucs fan wisdom…

All these questions about BA and if he is what he says he is can be answered by watching the “All or Nothing” Season 1. When the cameras were with the team the whole season. You can see how he was instrumental in drafting David Johnson and how he brought him along slowly for the long haul not just the quick fixes. How he worked with Carson Palmer to work on Turn overs. How he held the team accountable for their mistakes. How he called on the leaders of the team to hold players accountable. He is a true coach and teacher. That is what this team has needed. Teach the players both on and off the field and he did that with success in Arizona with most of these retreads that everyone is afraid of. All of those coaches are here now as well. They were 2-0 and rather than party he told them the haven’t done “*)it” this is a prove it league. He runs some light no contact practices during the season to keep the players fresh. It is a good watch to answer all these questions with BA and the Bucs.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

I love it, spoken like the disciple of the Ray Perkins coaching tree that he is!

We need 3-a-days as well – and tear down that sissy tent too. Let’s take it back to 1988, when men were men and women didn’t have peckers!

  22. Clodhopper Says:

Since hes been hired he’s sounded exactly like Mike Smith 2016.

  23. SKBucsFan Says:

It all sounds good on here, but until we get a coach that shows he isn’t afraid to cut those that don’t buy in, or play at a high level all the time, I will be a skeptic.

I like what BA is saying, now show us!

  24. RustyRhinos Says:

All this talk don’t cook rice. It takes action, I will wait until the end if the season to yell and clap about “talk”. Just to see if it is just that, talk. How many 3 INT games will it be before the “anointed” one hears this wrath? Will he? Let’s all temper ourselves until the end of this season and see if it was all talk and little action. I hope Coach Arians walks the walk and talks the talk. Time only will tell. Not just some fiery words before OTA’s.
    Go BA!!!! Go Bucs!!!!

  25. tnew Says:

Koetter may have been one of the worst clock management head coaches in the NFL. He had little sense of when to play aggressive at the end of the games so most of the time he played safe. This season will at least give the fans a read on which players want to be on the team and which just want to catch a check.

  26. Pigsueybucsfan Says:

Finally we have a real coach/teacher not a collage coach or a first time hc that were both lost in space with no clue as to adjust your game plan for the 2nd half and a staff that knows how to work together and use the talent they have looking forward to the possibilities for the coming year should be much improved. GO BUCS!!

  27. Rod Munch Says:

tnew – That is true, Dirk was a dope. Take that game @ Carolina in 2017, when before halftime the Bucs have the ball inside the Carolina 10 and he calls two running plays in a row, and is in no rush – he’s literally just running the clock down – not trying to score points. So on 3rd down Winston throws it to Brate, who is tackled before the ball gets there, it’s a defensive PI, but there’s no time left to run another play so they just kick a FG. That’s Dirk, a loser mentality if I ever saw one.

  28. ClwJB Says:

We finally have a real HC, might be the best one since McKay actually…

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

Arains is killing it with his off the field knowledge and Humor. He says he see’s
inside the crystal ball. Well, I certainly hope so for his sake. Now lets see how all of this translates to the field of Play. Remember fellow Fans, we’ve been here before..countless times..again and again. I want less Verbalization and more GD Implementation!! Just Win Bucs!! I’m tired of the endless Buc Post game apologies. I’ll drink no wine..Before its time!!

  30. stpetebucsfan Says:

Guys…can we stop with the freaking OBVIOUS. There are a significant # of posters here, true negative nellies, who get their jollies by pointing out nothing means nothing until it’s on the scoreboard!!!

Then Joe should just take the off season off and stop putting out JBF. Of FREAKING COURSE the final word will come on the scoreboard…DUH!!!

Meanwhile we are left to digest strategies, hires, and other OFF SEASON stuff.

You do not get intelligence or “football knowledge” points for stating the obvious.

Of course it’s ALL TALK and personnel moves this time of the year. At least we can go on BA’s record, the talk he’s uttering and the personnel moves he’s making or considering and even those are limited considering we haven’t drafted a single player and FA season hasn’t started.

If you can’t get excited or be optimistic, take a pass and wait until the season actually starts before your non stop drumbeat of negativity. Just sayin’!

  31. DBS Says:

Or of course if you don’t like reading the truth, don’t read it.

  32. stpetebucsfan Says:

    DBS

There is no truth in these statements at all. That is exactly my point. NOTHING has happened. There is only OPINION and you know the famous saying about opinions!

The “truth” will not take place until September!

  33. Darin Says:

    Rod
Lol. I agree. And 3 a days doesnt sound bad right now. I’d even join em. Lets effin practice the bs out of em.

  34. Defense Rules Says:

StPete … I agree with ya about stating the ‘freaking obvious’ and what’s amusing to me is that we’re all guilty of it at one time or another. Joe provides the playground and we all meander from the merry-go-round to the jungle gym to the slides to whatever. Maybe that’s about all football has to offer at this time of year?

BA’s opening gambit at that One Buc Palace interview, “First and foremost, Bucs don’t beat Bucs,” is music to all our ears & I think he can make SOME progress in that area. But until the Bucs have a TEAM with real DEPTH and COMPETITION it’ll be hard for him & his staff to ‘kick ass & take names’ as we used to say. There are only so many motivational tools in any coach’s toolbelt, but I’ve long believed that REAL COMPETITION is the ultimate motivator.

Changing coaches can be very traumatic, and the Bucs have certainly had their share of trauma these past several years (so have the fans BTW). Once these players get used to this coaching staff I think things will smooth out for us. How long that’ll take is anyone’s guess at this point, but hopefully it’s quick. Personally can’t see BA coaching for more than 2 or 3 years, but I could see his coaching staff being here for a long long time. That has me more excited than anything at this point.

  35. BucEmUp 7 Says:

    I just got wood

  36. Owlykat Says:

I am glad to hear BA studied three years of Buc film. He is now able to see all the mistakes that were made and he is intent on winning this year. Fortunately he is not throwing up his hands and saying he doesn’t know how to fix it. He does know!

  37. Mike Johnson Says:

Like I’ve said, Every yr..the optimism and thats fine. Sure, this yr has a..different feel than most. But..Don’t mean Nothin..Not a deeyham thing! Just noise. Sure I’m hopeful. But With my Bucs, over the eons of disappointment..S, I just have to..wait and see as always. I’m not worried though, Arians starts the losing all over again and he will..Join A plethera of ex-buc coaches down at the..St Pete..Fishing hole. Winning..is all that matters. Batter up baby!

  38. Buc1987 Says:

    What Mike Johnson said!

  39. jerseybuc Says:

Every coach we have had over the last decade has made the same statement. We can’t beat ourselves, we have to be smarter….etc…I will believe it when I see it.
