It’s 23 For Chris Godwin

February 28th, 2019

With all the chatter from Jason Licht and Bruce Arians at the NFL Scouting Combine yesterday, Joe ignored a happening that should make Bucs fans take a little notice.

Wide receiver Chris Godwin had a birthday, No. 23.

Yes, Godwin is only 23 years old.

Think about what he’s already proven at that young age. He’s never missed a game and has shown he can battle through injuries and ailments. He had three 100+ yard games last season, a tough accomplishment on a team with Mike Evans and many other weapons. For perspective, Mohamed Sanu, the Falcons’ established and respected No. 2 receiver, has a grand total of one game in the past four years with 100+ receiving yards. And before you start screaming “Calvin Ridley” at Joe, the Falcons rookie faded quite a bit in the second half of the season. Look it up.

Godwin’s seven touchdowns last season ranked 13th best among NFL wide receivers and his work ethic and maturity has been lauded in a big way by everyone who spends time around him.

Is Godwin the “No. 1 receiver” Jason Licht and Dirk Koetter said repeatedly that he is? That’s unclear, but that answer won’t arrive if the Bucs continue to cater to Rams-yearning DeSean Jackson and his con games.

  1. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

So he’s five years older than Jameis?

  2. Bird Says:

    Yeahhhhh

Another dig at Desean Jackson from the joes

It went from happy birthday Godwin to I hate Desean Jackson cause he won’t kiss Jameis butt

    I hope desean stays now.
Joe talks a mean game here.
Joe- why don’t you ask him about his malcontent ways to his face in locker room

The only player that has a “problem” with DJax is Jameis? Seems like everyone else is good with him. Joes enemy #1

  3. DB55 Says:

    And his lady is feeine

You’re doing great Chris. Keep that ish up

  4. Bird Says:

    Kyler Murray numbers are in

5-10 (russel Wilson and drew breez)
    207 lbs (190 in college)
Hand size 9 1/4 which is normal by nfl standards and a concern with turning over ball if too small

All positives. They thought they would be lower in each category
He has good chance to go top 5. We can only hope.

Especially if he runs crazy fast 40 time

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Joe threw out a Djax nugget……but that isn’t as good as a full-blown article…..where is it?….Got to have it….

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

2years and a big payday coming for him….hope the Bucs can keep him

  7. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Hoping Justin Watson make the same leap in his second year. Truly feel he’ll be able to fill in for Humphries.

  8. Robert Says:

    he’s a baller, and I thought him to be a #2

but the offense suffered when djax went down. I know they say he was hurt some last year, anyone know if it was specific to those games djax was out?

  9. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete (formerly known as 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs Fans', until Kwon started to suck Lol) Says:

The offense was rendered ineffective with Djax & OJ Howard both out late last year. Those 2 gamechangers are our 2 most potent weapons on offense hands down…

  10. SnookTB Says:

Why do we trust any kind of information or results from the Koetter/Smith years?

Everyone gets a new start. And you’ll see it with DeSean as well.

Joe will be eating crow about DeSean. Much like he ate it after he drooled all over Johnny Manziel.

  11. Joe Says:

Joe will be eating crow about DeSean. Much like he ate it after he drooled all over Johnny Manziel.

    Love Johnny!

  12. ben Says:

WHY why why did Fitz like Djax ??/ I guess the more accurate qb has more friends, huh!

  13. Loyaltotheend Says:

So DJAX won’t be on the podcast any time soon then…

  14. Jean Lafitte Says:

Jameis said he love’s him some DJax. I don’t get where the Jameis hates DJax comes from but they’re lying, unless they’re calling JW a liar.

  15. Brandon Says:

I was screaming for the Bucs to grab Godwin at the pick used to select Justin Evans that year. I had done tons of homework on him and he looked like every bit the future quality starting WR that he is today.

  16. Robert Says:

    JW has never lied

  17. Jean Lafitte Says:

He put up those numbers in mostly single coverage, and he was usually covered by the weakest link DB on the defense. If we get rid of DJax, Godwin will face his fair share of double teams. Also in Atlanta, Sanu is considered to be a #1 WR who like DJax helps take pressure off Jones. Similar role to DJax and the main reason his numbers are down as well. IMO Sanu works best when he’s put into the X while they let Ridley take the Y.

  18. westernbuc Says:

If he cleans up his fumbling problem he can be great

  19. Jean Lafitte Says:

    screech backup correction:

IMO Sanu works best when he’s put into the y (slot) while they let Ridley take the z.

  20. SOEbuc Says:

    Brandon

I acted the same way with the Bucs passing on Godwin. I heard they had been talking to him a lot before the draft, watched his video and really liked him. He was projected mid second round and we got him mid third. I was very happy. Total steal.

DJax does not need to stay for many reasons:
    -Cash
    -Jameis likes bigger receivers
    -Bad attitude
-We don’t need to pay a second #2 WR $10 million
-Jameis and DJax still weren’t connecting even though they worked hard in the
    offseason together.
-DJax only wants deep pass numbers for chip and dip commercials and I doubt BA is going to change JW3 into Ben Rothlesiburger in his first year.

  21. stpetebucsfan Says:

DJAX hasn’t played an entire season in over FIVE YEARS!!! He’s getting old and is a total one trick pony. D’s adjusted to him after the first four games and simply took him out of the offense.

Godwin is the far superior athlete and he has cojones…he fights for the football and also is a willing blocker downfield. DJAX does neither. DJAX is a frail little guy who can fly and is now 32. I do not get why there are still guys who insist he’s being maligned.

If it was JW’s fault and Fitz was the answer why did DJAX disappear even after Fitz was reinserted replacing the benched JW? He got 54% of his yardage in the first four games.

Of course as always he’s not tough enough to play an entire season…that last occured six years ago and has happened only twice in his entire career. He missed 4 games last year…25% of our schedule with hurt fee fees…er…a sore thumb. BOO effing HOO. This is not maligning DJAX…it’s just reporting FACTS.

  22. Pickgrin Says:

Happy 23rd Birthday Chris! Just keep doing what you are doing my man!

We need more players like this! 1st rd talent – falling to the mid 3rd rd.

  23. Bojim Says:

Do what it takes to get Jackson where he wants to go and move. I’m getting old

  24. Rod Munch Says:

Is he a #1? Absolutely not, but he’s a really good #2. But he needs to spend all offseason practicing without gloves, because in those rain games he was dropping everything. Not a dis on the guy, I just hope he does work on it, because you can’t have a wet field taking out one of your starting WRs. But drops are certainly something Evans had early on, and he’s overcome them, so hopefully Godwin will as well.

  25. BucHead5588 Says:

That’s just not true Mike Evans an Jackson almost got into a fight after the last game in Jackson’s 1st year

  26. BucEmUp 7 Says:

This dude needs to be our slot wr and juston watson needs to be on the outside.

  27. Alanbucsfan Says:

Why are the DJax haters so afraid of letting it play out…
If he gets an attitude, Arians will get rid of him.
But that probably won’t happen, because Arians knows what he’s doing unlike the total failures of the past coaching regime .
You think Arians wants DJax on the team because he likes headaches?
And the posturing for future trade theory is comical

  28. celly Says:

This is why i’m OK with trading DJAX for a 5th rounder, resigning Hump and then drafting a “speedy” receiver in the 4th to replace him.
