Is Ryan Jensen Being Targeted?

February 14th, 2019

Explains penalties.

It’s not like Bucs players haven’t been bird-dogged by zebras in the past.

When Kellen Winslow was playing tight end for the Bucs, he had a habit of whining and moaning on every play, and he also had a reputation for getting handsy with defenders when trying to create separation. It was a rap that wasn’t exactly inaccurate.

This came to really hurt the Bucs after he caught a touchdown pass against Detroit that would have given the Bucs a win, but Winslow was flagged for pushing off even though replays clearly showed he was interfered with. The Bucs went on to lose in overtime. At the end of that 2010 season, the 10-6 Bucs lost a playoff tiebreaker with Green Bay and the Giants. The Packers won a Super Bowl from that Wild Card spot.

Even Bucs fantastic wide receiver Mike Evans had these issues in his early years. He would holler and bellyache that he was interfered with on virtually each play, sometimes even before the pass was past him. And he, too, demonstrated a habit of retaliating with defenders, which the refs began to sniff out and threw flags on the smallest of infractions by Evans. Sometimes, those flags included instances with no infractions.

The one Bucs offensive player who each and every play will play to the whistle and maybe past it is center Ryan Jensen. And it seems he is being bird-dogged by officials.

In a recent “Locked In” podcast on BucsNation.con, Jensen spoke about the spike in his penalties. In his four years prior to coming to Tampa Bay, Jensen had a grand total of nine.

After one year with the Bucs he had 11.

“That is a hard question to [answer],” Jensen said. “As we have seen in the NFC championship game, there are obvious things that are missed. [Referees] miss stuff like that, it’s human nature of the game.

“I feel that close to half of the penalties I received — well, one personal foul I thought was pretty ludicrous — three or four of those holding calls that I got, I saw [the plays later] on tape, and I don’t see it.

“Even [former Bucs offensive line coach George Warhop] would say, ‘I don’t really see it there.'”

Jensen did confess he hasn’t exactly been an angel on the field and deserved some of the penalties.

“I had some that were obvious and personal fouls are stupid. But that’s who I am. I am an aggressive, attacking type of guy. But, yeah, I have to cut those penalties down. I think I have that reputation now so referees watch film too and they hear what’s going on around the league. I think that is part of it. I think they might have been watching for it.”

Jensen is right, he has to be smarter than that. If, as he said, he has a feeling he’s being bird-dogged, then he needs to be extra careful. Doesn’t mean he can’t play aggressive, just don’t play dumb.

It is something Evans learned. And like Evans, Jensen’s a smart guy. He should be able to make the necessary adjustments.

Joe’s never going to critique a guy who hustles like Jensen. But there is a fine line between busting your tail and playing with your head up your backside.

he has to play smarter and better for that matter….he has a mean streak which is what you need/want in a lineman but he sticks out like a sore thumb when he’s playing to the echo of the whistle and others around him are just standing around…lol…

hopefully goodwin can help him clean up his technique…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

Some tried to warn the sheep last year!!!!!!! And for being a top paid center, he is most likely the 5th and at best the 4th best center in the division!!!!!!!!! Some even say that he is the second best center on the roster (he just could not play guard as well as someone else)!!!!!!!!!

Let the record state!!!!!!!! Once again, The Buc Realist drops the truth!!!!!!! Some will get mad, But it is the same as getting mad at the thermometer when it tells you that it is hot during the summer!!!!! IT just is!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So time for the much requested!!!!!! “Realist Repost”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe, keeps trying to say how great the Bucs O-line is every year!!!! But then every offseason, there is massive turnover on the Bucs O-line!!!!!!!!

And from some of the highlights I saw of Jensen, the one thing I noticed, was how reckless his play was at times!!!!!! I don’t know how many penalties he got last year, But if he is wearing a Bucs uniform and plays like that, we will see many yellow flags being thrown!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Joe Says:

I don’t know how many penalties he got last year,

11 penalties. He had nine in four years before coming to the Bucs. Joe appreciates you reading the story. 🙂

Joe, keeps trying to say how great the Bucs O-line is every year!!!!

That is simply inaccurate and you are making things up. Joe has never written how the offensive line is “great.” It isn’t garbage. Those who claim that have never seen a garbage offensive line. Those who claim that apparently didn’t watch the Bucs in 2015.

  4. gbobucsfan Says:

Jensen has been such a disappointment. I can see the current regime benching him after one of his “doh” moments.

Hopefully, I’ll eat my words after this season

  5. Uncle Donnie Says:

Everyone on the team is targeted by referies bad spots included go back and watch the tapes!!!! # IT’S A BUCS LIFE

  6. StoutGospel Says:

I say keep playing hard and nasty as hell. Too many softies on the OLine except for Marpet and they need that mentality and leadership shown. We bought that as much as we bought his technique when we signed him.

Just cut out the penalties at the end of the play crap. Way too obvious.

  7. tmaxcon Says:

Blaming refs more excuses for a poorly coached team and piss poor franchise

    @joe

look at the date!!! It was last year!!!!!!! When the sheep and some were saying that the O-line might have been “top 10” and was not because Drug Martin was the main ball carrier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now stop moderating and approve this message!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 season will reveal answers to the sheep, That the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a trade-off……..I don’t mind a couple of the personal fouls if it fires up the rest of the Oline……we desperately need some nasty on the line.

The holding penalties are entirely another matter……but as far as I’m concerned, we need more Jensen’s on this team.

  11. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I’ll be honest, I thought Jensen would improve our running game. Not sure he was at fault but they sure didn’t improve on the run blocking last year.

  13. Loyaltotheend Says:

Bucs have two of the highest paid interior linemen in Jensen and Marpet but were near the top in having RB’s get hit in the backfield. Yet Joe thinks it’s a RB problem and not a line problem…

This team needs to play smarter and harder if they wanna stop being a joke

  14. Lord Cornelius Says:

    lmao @ realist

The only “sheep” are in his head. I don’t remember anyone touting the O-line as some elite unit. Joe never said they were “great.” It’s a complete bullsh1t narrative.

If all the “sheep” felt that way – then why did so many of us want Quenten Nelson jack4ss? Pretty much every Buc fan was on board with picking up Nelson if he was there.

Dudes been calling people “sheep” ever since I’ve been here. Super insulting to the fan base and it’s all delusional bullsh1t. There are no “sheep”. There is no f*cking Tampa 2 Mafia. Go outside dude.

don’t blame realist the fanbase embarrasses itself daily by calling one good year “Glory Years” and celebrating dungy the clowns 2 playoff wins in 6 years as legendary….. not to mention calling underachieving players with 5 career playoff wins legends…. bucfan embarrasses itself daily that’s not on realist pal that’s on low standard bucfan. but hey since I am a glass half full guy let’s point out what a fantastic job the Glazers have done lowering the bar and training the fanbase to accept and enjoy losing year in and year ouit.

Bucs have been targeted for penalties and non-penalitials since the Super Bowl in 2002. Donald Goodell gives the orders to the zebras. ME13 especially. He’s not the kind of guy that will b!tch at the refs unless it’s an obvious PI call. And he b!tches at the refs a lot if you catch my drift.

  17. SOEbuc Says:

We literally had the worst RG in the NFL with Benenoch, especially in the run game. Draft Chris Lindstrom in the second round and PB has 1,000+ rushing yards.

so it’s the refs fault and the uniforms the bucs are a league-wide laughing stock year in and year and undisputed basement champs…. the Bucs would be the Patriots if not for bad uniforms and conspiracy theories… how about dealing, in reality, the franchise is void of leadership and direction and has very little hope of changing.

Everyone has their own thought, but if you weren’t sure the NFL and it’s owners don’t give a flying f#ck about anything but money. I might sound like an a-hole, but I don’t believe they CARE SO MUCH about player safety. They want every QB to be a Tom Brady throwing deep passes for TDs in this passing league for TV ratings, merchandise sales, and ticket sales and the Yucs have been in the bottom of the barrell in those departments for a long time. Why you’re not allowed to tackle the QB anymore. They want a 300 lb. guy using all his momentum to stop dead in his tracks a half second after the QB gets rid of the ball. It’s why every personal foul is on defense. You ever see a RB get called for leading with his helmet? It happens a lot. They’re destroying the defensive side of the ball. Soon enough it’s gonna be QBs wearing practice jerseys in the game.

Off topic but not to mention these fat, slow 70 year old refs. I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THAT IS ABOUT!

i could not agree more. the nfl has done it’s very best to destroy the competitive offensive and defensive balance of the game. the player safety BS on both sides owners and players is the pure definition of hypocrisy.
