Chris Godwin On Dealing With DeSean Jackson

So how is up-and-coming wide receiver Chris Godwin dealing with the buzz about malcontent DeSean Jackson wanting out of Tampa but Bucco Bruce Arians and Mike Evans wanting him to stay?

It can’t be easy for Godwin to watch all this nonsense as a high worth ethic and productive player.

Yes, 32-year-old Jackson is a historic talent with a bad attitude. Godwin, 22, is a great talent with an excellent attitude, a guy who caught seven touchdown passes last year and racked up 59 catches and 842 yards.

Godwin was asked about handling all the Jackson chatter on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week. Kudos to host Alex Marvez for telling Godwin he’s in a “weird spot” and giving him shot to tell fans how he’s dealing with it.

“I mean, I take it in stride, man,” Godwin said. “I think I can only take it one day at a time and just kind of handle the way I’ve been handling it.”

Godwin said he has a good relationship with Jackson and other Bucs receivers, but in what represented a refreshing change at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters, Godwin didn’t say he wanted Jackson back on the team. Instead, the 2017 third-round pick says he’s focused on his game and earning the confidence of coaches.

While chatting about the Bucs’ quarterback carousel last season, Godwin noted he’s the kind of receiver who adjusts well and dropped what almost felt like a slap at D-Jack.

“For instance, like some guys who are like strictly speed guys, a lot of times if they don’t have that chemistry with a quarterback, they’re going to get underthrown a lot,” Godwin said. “But, you know, I like to think that my game is pretty versatile. I can play with any quarterback with a certain amount or reps.”

General manager Jason Licht is on record saying Godwin is a “No. 1 receiver.” We’ll soon find out if that Bruce Arians agrees with that assessment.

If Arians grades Godwin as a No. 1 or No. 1a type, then there’s literally no reason to keep Jackson around.

Anyone notice JW seem to start playing better after he started wearing clear face shield? prescription maybe?

Bucs need every talented player they can get on the field… basement dwellers are in no position to run talent out of the building

I take it all in stride. That’s the comment of s man who can’t wait to get Jackson out of time so he can get more reps. sounds like a guy who thinks he’s better all around player.

  11. Bobby M. Says:

Licht thinks Godwin is a #1 receiver?….Then why not trade disgruntled Jackson when he had value if that’s what he believed? Then extend Humphries and have some extra picks for this draft…or corner depth…or anything for that matter?

Licht’s words don’t remotely ever match up with his results. He talks about how much “talent” this team has, but there’s holes everywhere but WR/TEs and d-line. The dude has been shaping the roster for 5 yrs and we have to patch up nearly every unit.

    100% Bobby
No coach can win with this guy as a gm

Historic? I guess it depends on what you consider “historic”.

A nice career? Yes! And I certainly understand and agree with Joe’s class in not piling on…but IMHO “historic” is over the top.

Because he’s now over 10,000 yards that places him in the top 50. He’s currently at 45th all time.

There are ten WR’s over 10,000 yards…ten over 11,000…obviously that leaves 25 12,000 or more.

5 are over 15,000…that’s certainly historic and the GOAT Jerry Rice leads the way with an incredible 22,895. NOBODY is going to catch that truly historic number.

BTW Larry Fitzgerald who plans to play again this year is over 16,000 in second place. He’ not going to catch Rice.

If DJAX can put together two more years over 1,000 he’ll join some very good receivers like Hines Ward, Derrick Mason, and Michael Irvin. Now we’re getting close to historic.

He’s only had five 1,000 yard season out of his 11 years….he’s got a 50-50 chance of getting 1,000. He had a great rookie season in the playoffs…after that he disappeared in his other games.

  14. Bucsfanman Says:

The best part of DJax being traded or released is that we won’t have to keep talking about him.

Godwin’s taking the right approach. Work on YOUR game young man! The ball is your friend!

    Not a prescription.

  16. Issaic haggins Says:

If Licht really thinks he’s a number one , he should be fired !!! They tried to force him to be a #2 with d Jax gone and after one game of tape he was pretty much shut down and played like a 4 . He is a good player but he plays more like a 4.6 guy than a 4.48 guy and had a bad case of the drops !!

  17. Widerightandleft Says:

    SMH !!

  18. K_Bassuka Says:

My guess is that Licht wants to trade D-Jax and wants to make other teams believe he’s not a bad teammate in order to max out on a trade. At least that’s what I hope so, can’t wait for D-Jax to be gone.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

this djax stuff is getting old….lol….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  20. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

You could tell Godwin wasn’t at 100 percent last year. His rookie year he caught everything including some difficult catches in traffic. I think his ceiling is a number 1 but right now he is a solid #2. DJax is just diarrhea.

  21. Alanbucsfan Says:

Adam Humphries and Cole Beasley of Cowboys are the same.
    Beasley makes $3 mil
More than doubling that for Humphries would be dumb
If Ariens can get DJax to return punts and can coach up the chemistry between
DJax and Jameis, then DJax is worth $10 mil.
    Let it play out

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Alaskan

    Exactly!

  23. Mort Says:

Guys, we can’t trade him till the new league year starts. Chill the F out. Let it all play out and if he is still on the roster in training camp, then you can start getting worried. Till then it’s all gray matter. Just ask Rah.

  24. BUC IT Says:

its entertaining when I here people talk about trading Djax…. nobody is gonna give us much of anything for him. He’s 32…. someone will take him but nobody would even give us a 4th for him. guaranteed.
