“You Better Be Ready To Cover”
January 23rd, 2019Pro Bowl New York Jets safety Jamal Adams screamed at Joe today after the AFC Pro Bowl practice at Disney World.
Joe is not exaggerating. The question posed to the No. 6 overall pick in 2016 was simple: “What would you tell guys on the Buccaneers defense if you could address them as a group about Coach Bowles and what to expect from him?”
“Be ready to play man, man-to-man, zero, you better be ready to cover,” Adams barked about his recently-fired head coach.
“Because he going to make you cover and he wants guys that can cover and that can blitz and do it all. He not the head coach now. So I can’t anything more. But on defense, just expect a guy that’s going to give it his all and a guy that you definitely want to play for.”
Adams and Bowles were known to be tight, despite having clashing personalities. Adams is a character; Bowles is reserved. Joe watched Adams do a complete spoof interview with a European media outlet earlier in the day. Joe’s pretty sure they bought it, too.
If Bowles wants to play tight man and blitz, the Bucs are going to have to be active in free agency, as Joe wrote this morning.

Adams is a FOOTBALL PLAYER has been since days in the bayou….the bucs have maybe 2 on the defense now and need 9 more

Cover and pass rush go hand in hand…

Not sure why man vs zone would result in this conclusion. The Bucs have been drafting press corners and playing them in zone. If we need new corners it shouldn’t be over that issue. It’d be because they flat out suck regardless of scheme.
VHIII played much better when in press. Same with Davis. Not sure on Stewart/Elliot/Adams. Ryan Smith seemed to be better in press too.

Second that Cornelius… I would welcome Patrick Peterson, but we’ve got corners on the roster that are better press guys.

Can’t wait to see some blitzing.
We don’t really know that term here in Tampa
Even the good old days with Sapp and Simeon ; they only needed to bring 4

just 2 shutdown corners and a new front 7 away from glory 🙂

Peterson & Davis covering the sidelines sounds like a great scenario to me.
IMO Davis doesn’t get the credit he’s earned because he didn’t get a bunch of picks and make ESPN. But if you watch him he showcases a ton of blanket coverage. More then we seen from a DB in a very long time. He looks like one of our brightest spots on D.
VH111 as a #3 and a fifth DB looks good to me. But I think Andrew Adams could wind up taking a lot of those 5th DB snaps from Vernon. Adding somebody to compete with both of them would be fantastic.

Pass rush is the weakest link…in the defensive puzzle
January 23rd, 2019 at 2:42 pm
Most of the dbs we have prefer to play press coverage. Could we use upgrades? Sure who couldnt….but the coaching was always the problem

LC
bingo!!!!!
all of our CB’s are man press…..smitty and grimes were holding us back with their old man passive zone coverage….
#REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

Cartlon Davis and MJ Stewart were drafted to play press at the line. Davis played pretty good for a rookie last year. I think Bowles can get more out of MJ. He was considered one of the best press corners out of the draft last year due to his strenth and thick physique, perhaps why many viewed him moving over to safety. He was the best outside CB at UNC but often moved inside. I think he will greatly improve under Bowles.

Last years draft picks make you think there was already a plan in place that did not include Koetter or Smith in 2019

“Milli Vanilli VH3 can can play man? well?
Better bring the Atlanta tape back up. same against amari cooper
Put VH3 isolated with a speeding fast receiver and he is done…finished
put him against a bigger slower receiver he has a chance
VH3 man to man….please
“In 2018, I looked much better and improved on tape when I wasnt on the field”
Milli Vanilli

Kobe faker, you are right on it.
I dont know why the bucs wasted that pick.Linemen and receivers and backs come out of U.F

The Bucs better not be counting on VHIII. He’s short, slow, and injury-prone. HOWEVER, he does one heck of a nae-nae when QBs overthrow his man!!!

Bucsfanman Hargraeves and Stewart woukd both be good rotational nickel corners.

@AlteredEgo … “Pass rush is the weakest link…in the defensive puzzle”. At one point that was definitely the case AlteredEgo, but not any more IMO. Current DLine (under contract) is quite a bit better than it was in 2017 (remember Swaggy Baker?).
Our weakest link right now is the group BEHIND the DLine. Our LB corps is one big question mark right now (I’d only count on LVD right now). I like Davis’ potential, but that’s all it is at this point … POTENTIAL. Also like Adams & Whitehead, but not necessarily as starters at this point, more as quality depth. Evans is too inconsistent right now, but I’m hoping that Todd Bowles gets him squared away fast because he’s also got lots of potential. I don’t personally see us re-signing VHIII for 2020, but you never know.

I’m excited to see Carlton Davis pressing on the outside and I personally think, if healthy, VH3 will be just fine in Bowles system. He is a press corner who did just fine as a man to man DB at UF. He has been misused his entire career here in Tampa so I can’t wait to see him play.
We cannot afford to draft another DB at #5. It would be neglectful to waste a prime pick, especially when you consider the talent that will be available. Not all of these names will still be on the board but guys like Jonah Williams, Josh Allen, Quinnen Williams, Devin White, and even Ed Oliver. Those guys can change things around real quick, moreso than another high pick towards a DB.
Personally I want either Jonah or White, and Allen would be a steal as well. Jonah will be a monster at LG and if Donnie doesn’t work out then you can move Jonah out to LT

Free agency will be critical to how fast we rebuild our team. Za’darius Smith and CJ Mosley would instantly fix our LB issues. Bradley Roby would help at CB, Frank Clark would be nasty but I seriously doubt Seattle will let him leave. Kareem Hunt would be a great back to compliment Peyton.
Clearly some of those names won’t be allowed to leave. But either LB from Baltimore is a serious upgrade and Hunt is too talented to not go after. If we allow Jameis then he easily gets in. Even a short term deal for someone like Ansah would be nice.
So many options available between free agency and the draft. We can cut a few guys and add close to $40 million to help buy some players
January 23rd, 2019 at 10:26 pm
Drafting press corners and playing off coverage for the past three years because Grimes cant play press!!!! Davis and Vernon will do just fine in press
January 24th, 2019 at 1:45 am
3rd that Cornelius. We have press corners go get a veteran press corner and the honeybadger to help teach our young up and coming safeties

hahahahha!
Nice one!

Comes back to the Greedy Williams thought. Bowles likes big press CB. Greedy across Carlton could be a nice decision. My decision for Jonah at #5 continues to drop as I am one of the rarities that think Leidtke can hold down LT nicely. If they played a straight up 3-4 Devin White would also rise.

I remember a game BA was announcing & Liedtke was in for Mr. lazy ass Smith & Ba said what a good job he was doing.
