“Real Chance” GMC Released
January 17th, 2019If the Bucs are going to add players to help Bucco Bruce Arians and his staff turn this franchise around, it’s a decent bet players currently on the roster will have to be adiosed.
Joe thinks it is a safe bet DeSean Jackson and his $10 million will be off the books soon. But who else?
Jenna Laine of ESPN has a strong hunch on the defensive side of the ball, it may be Gerald McCoy.
Gerald McCoy, who is due to make $13 million next year (none guaranteed) if he remains on the roster, would line up on the outside as a three-technique, opposite a player such as William Gholston, who may truly be a better fit as a player in a 3-4 scheme. Given that the Bucs are about $16.5 million under the salary cap going into 2019, there is a real chance McCoy won’t return.
“We have a lot of tough decisions to make,” general manager Jason Licht said when specifically asked about McCoy. “A lot of people have a lot of tough decisions to make.”
That’s not exactly a bold statement of confidence for GMC, who after the final game of the season acted and sounded like a man that knew his fate.
It would be hard to see GMC walk. However, if defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is running more of a 34-front defense, that sort of leaves GMC out in the cold.
January 17th, 2019 at 10:02 am
Whatever it takes.
January 17th, 2019 at 10:05 am
Bruce and Bowles both have said that they will have a defense that suits the players on the team.. why is the media stuck on this 3-4 defense ? i may be wrong but i don’t get why this is such a huge topic after what both coaches said. Gerald can always renegotiate his contract and come back on a lower cap number.
January 17th, 2019 at 10:06 am
Can’t we get something for him…….and Djax…….I mean, they do have value for the right team and you would think someone would at least give up a late round pick for them.
We have some interesting decisions……..D. Smith, for example.
January 17th, 2019 at 10:06 am
restructure or relocate…..
would love for him to restruture to a 3year 18mil deal….he’ll can be great depth behind Vita and ed oliver/quennin williams…..
grimes, gholston, urein all need to walk….

January 17th, 2019 at 10:10 am
The way I see it. Its not a done deal D-Jax is gone. Seems BA would want to keep a deep threat like him on the roster. I trust BA’s instincts here, I just hope he does his due diligence and makes sure that D-Jax has his head on straight.
January 17th, 2019 at 10:11 am
GMC will either be in TPA or in Dallas, you know Sapp will push to have him under Rod Marinelli’s tutorledge if he leaves the Bucs and Rod remains the defensive coordinator there
January 17th, 2019 at 10:11 am
So perhaps we should start the JBF guessing game…something we play here daily.
So in order who are your picks to be gone next year?
Mine…1. MEJAX
2. GMC
3. Grimes
Who am I leaving out?
January 17th, 2019 at 10:16 am
“We have a lot of tough decisions to make,” general manager Jason Licht said when specifically asked about McCoy. “A lot of people have a lot of tough decisions to make.”
Sounds to me like the Bucs want to keep GMC, but only if he reworks his deal.
Here’s a lit of notable free agents this year on the Bucs. Who do you guys believe needs to be re-signed?
• Kwon Alexander
• Peyton Barber
• Devante Bond
• Adam Humphries
• Michael Liedtke
• Donovan Smith
• Leonard Wester
January 17th, 2019 at 10:17 am
Arians wont put up with any player not a team first guy. So if djax buys in he could stay. If not he wont. If he stays n acts up during year he will be gone then too. Bruce dont play those games. Just the kinda guy we need here.
January 17th, 2019 at 10:17 am
Its a shame that the sheep still want to see him for another declining year only to watch him pout around and demoralize all around!!!!!!!!!!! Its a shame that some wanted to switch more to the 3-4 last off-season including the defensive coordinator but was overruled!!!!!!!!! Its a shame that there was a substantial trade offer for GMC to start the process of being more of a 3-4 team and rebuild the under talented roster of a defense!!!!!!!!!!! But the GM and other higher ups choose to build around the fan favorite with vets and scrape parts!!!!! Now the bucs are even farther away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 17th, 2019 at 10:18 am
Atlanta media websites are already calling for the Falcons to pick him up…….. I would suck to see him on another team in the division. He probably has at least 1 good year left in him…. 13 Mil is too high a price tag at this point for McCoy. Defense seemingly was better at times when he was off the field.. This is a tough decision.
January 17th, 2019 at 10:19 am
AJ Says
“The way I see it. Its not a done deal D-Jax is gone. Seems BA would want to keep a deep threat like him on the roster.”
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we’ve got plenty of deep threats on the roster without him…and Jameis Winston connects with all of them.
• Mike Evans
• OJ Howard
• Chris Godwin
And the mid-range guys he connects with are:
• Adam Humphries
• Cameron Brate
So we do not need another deep threat, especially one who eats up Cap Space and gives far less than 100%.
January 17th, 2019 at 10:20 am
Good! I hear Sheldon Richardson will be available.

January 17th, 2019 at 10:23 am
Not sure there is any new insight here that we already don’t know..
January 17th, 2019 at 10:24 am
I repeat: THE FRONT DOES NOT MATTER AS MUCH AS GAP SCHEME. GMC hates two-gapping, and that’s what Smitty had him doing the last few years when they went to 3 man fronts. That’s what he hated – taking on a tackle and a guard and just holding blocks. You can still run a 34 front with a one-gap approach, which is more in line with the gap shooting type of style that GMC likes and plays to his strengths.
January 17th, 2019 at 10:31 am
Seems like management not hot to keep.
Maybe try to trade, but his $$$$ took high.
Believe he was a very good player, just no ‘mean’ enough, both to opponents and teammates.
Wish him the very best, with whatever happens and thanks.😊
January 17th, 2019 at 10:35 am
Darin Says
“Arians wont put up with any player not a team first guy. So if djax buys in he could stay.”
To me, this is the first true test of Arians. If he keeps DJax, it does not bode well for the future in my book, because he will have proven himself to make bad personnel decisions.
It will also demonstrate that Jason Licht has no authority in roster decisions, because we all know Licht wants DJax gone. So if they keep him, we all know who is in the driver’s seat…and that’s not a good thing. A head coach needs to be accountable to someone other than the owners.
And DJax won’t truly buy in. Oh, if he decides he wants to stay for the money, he will pretend long enough to make the final roster…but after that? He;ll go right back to sabotaging Winston’s passes to him (meaning not giving his full effort to run the routes or catch the ball).
People love to claim two things:
• Winston can’t connect deep
• Fitz had no problem connecting deep with Jackson
But the truth of the matter is that Winston does connect deep with everyone except Desean Jackson. He connects deep with Evans, Godwin and Howard. Heck, he even connected deep with Jackson a few times this year (which fans tend to forget; second to last game he did it).
If you look closely at the first two games when Winston started, you see a different Desean Jackson than when he played for Winston. DJax put his body on the line for Fitz and he had no issues running his routes on time. In other words, he was where he was supposed to be when the ball arrived.
But with Winston, Jackson was constantly held up on his routes because he wasn’t trying as hard.
And when the ball was close on the non-deep routes, Jackson was more concerned with protecting his body than catching the ball when playing for Winston.
I’m going to say it since no one else will: I think Desean Jackson refuses to play well for Winston because of the sexual accusations Winston has faced. I think that when he first came, he was willing to put his feelings aside, but then the Uber thing came up and all respect went out the window. So when DJax plays for Winston, he does not try as hard to make plays or run his routes. And I believe he tried to sabotage Winston to get him benched.
And that. I believe, is the real reason Jameis has trouble with Jackson.
On one hand, I understand his emotions. But by sabotaging Winston, he also hurt the team as a whole. He put the team last. He put his fellow players last.
So the Bucs need to trade him or release him.

Given that approx. one third of the roster churns each season being nominal, I expect this purge to be closer to half. Happened in AZ, look for that to repeat. As for GMC and DJax it seems no matter how I swirl the tea leaves the outcome remains the same: See ya! Go Bucs!!
In BA we trust.

I don’t really see how Gholston could be viewed as a better fit as a 3-4 end than GMC. Gerald is pretty long and lean for a DT. He’s 6’4 and we know he’s played at 285 or so, maybe even lighter. He’d have no problem getting down to 275-280. And he’s just a better all around player than Gholston…more expensive for sure, but I think it’s a stretch to say he wouldn’t be a good player in a 3-4.
January 17th, 2019 at 10:43 am
If Licht had a clue he would have traded this dude 3 years ago and secured a #1 for the guy but as everyone knows by now Licht has ZERO clue on building a winning franchise
January 17th, 2019 at 10:50 am
You guys do realize marinelli was stripped of duties in Dallas and is nothing more of a ceremonial fixture. The defense in Dallas sucked under marinelli. You Dungy the clown nuthuggers rewrite history more than any politician to justify mancrushes on failures. Not single dungy coach won anything — they all failed in tampa and every other place. all losers. Tomlin is not a dungy guy. Restructure McCoy. 4 yr 30 m. Make him a buc for life. He’s been thru bad and everything. Sign hump and Draft a tackle. Release other players. Grimes D-Jax. Gholston. Unrein. Anger. Don’t draft cornerback. Todd can find great value in unstaffed players. I will draft LT (Cappa to RT) then pass rusher. LG. Releases Dotson.

“McCoy spent about half the game last week working in a three-man front and while he didn’t come right out and say he didn’t like it, he certainly didn’t endorse the practice.
“I just play what they call,’’ McCoy said with a sardonic chuckle when asked about the strategy. “Whatever we run, I just kind of go with it. I’m a team guy so I do what they ask me to do.
“Do I feel like I could be more effective in a different way? Yes. But I’m a team guy. It’s not about Gerald. So whatever coach calls is what I’m going to run.’’
Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith acknowledge making more use of a three-lineman, three-linebacker, five-defensive back set in the Bucs 30-27 loss at Buffalo last week.”

We should trade him. He must be worth a draft pick.

Bonzai – on the internet, where a number of ludicrous things are said every day, you win today’s award for most clueless statement. DJax won’t work with Winston because of the uber incident? If the owners want to renew interest in this team, they need to TRADE the face of losing[McCoy], trade the face of malcontents[djax] and find a QB successor to the most overrated QB in the league[WinSTUNNED]…
January 17th, 2019 at 11:22 am
Whether we are running 3-4 or not even Geraldine lovers have to admit that with the added help he got with the edge rush he should have had more sacks especially not letting Carl Nassib our sack him. He did exactly what people like Ian Beckles said he would do which is basically be the same average player he is every year. 13 mil is too much for that lack of production and weak leadership skills. Adios amigo

This is kind of a “duh” statement. He’s 31, diminishing, and paid a bunch of money. I mean, if he were killing it, I’d say pay the man. But, he’s not.
He is a good DT but he CAN be replaced.
It would, however, be quite comical if they retained him to see DB55 and tmax’s reaction!
January 17th, 2019 at 11:40 am
See if you can’t trade him first, if that doesn’t pan out then see if you can get him to agree to a decent pay cut. If all else fails give him the boot, need to open up space any way we can and he has been slipping recently production wise, he certainly hasn’t done enough to warrant 13 mil.

Brate only just got his contract. He won’t be restructuring. He;s under contract for 5 more years. Too soon to restructure…and his salary goes down each of the next couple years anyway. By the time he’s in his last year, he’ll be making half what he deserves.
January 17th, 2019 at 12:13 pm
Teams won’t trade for the amount of money he’s making and especially if they know we will release him anyway. Same with DJax.

January 17th, 2019 at 12:14 pm
In my opinion…he’s gone. Another team won’t trade for that contract…he’s pricey @ 13 mil and it just feels time to turn the page. His draft comparison Suh is on his 3rd team and he has been by and large better than McCoy.

I do not know why this is so hard for fans to grasp.
JAMEIS WINSTON DOES NOT HAVE PROBLEMS THROWING THE LONG BALL!
As I list above, Jameis throws deep passes to:
• Mike Evans
• OJ Howard
• Chris Godwin
And he even threw them to DJax this year…multiple times…when Jackson actual had his timing right on his routes.

It makes more sense to keep him because you’re just gonna replace him with a MUCH lesser talent

I think it is very disrespectful ” Not There Yet” to call a man by his mothers name ” Geraldine” knowing full well she is deceased. This is the problem with sports in our area where things go way beyond the football field. at the end of the day he is still a man and did the community of Tampa a wonderful service of being a positive role model and citizen if the shoe were on the other foot I am pretty sure you would not appreciate it. Let’s keep thing about them as players but don’t get into their personal life during his tenure here as a Buccaneer who did we have who was better ….Gerald has always been in the top 5 as far as defensive tackles in the league and will be hard to replace
January 17th, 2019 at 12:26 pm

New coaches will spend countless hours interviewing players and reviewing tapes. EXPECT A 50 TO 60 PERCENT TURNOVER. New England has no problem releasing quality players. We need more money to bring in better players.
January 17th, 2019 at 1:47 pm
Smh – Listen to me men. Let me make it real simple.
The reason “WHY” Winston can’t connect with DeSean Jackson – Is because Jackson has a different level of speed. We’re not talking about Mike Evans type speed; c’mon now.
You gotta have a real “football arm” with timing & touch.
You just can’t be “throwing up hope” – trying to connect with a dude like that.
We’re not talking about flinging a baseball (141.75 grams) – at a stationary target;
60ft to home plate.
We’re talking about launching a football (14 to 15 oz.) 60yds downfield; hitting your target in stride. An with the way Jackson can switch gears – that ain’t a simple task.
Either you got that in your arsenal or you don’t. Plain & Simple.

Roster turnover is a GOOD thing . Gruden brought in 25 free agents and Bucs won Super Bowl. Winning football starts in the trenches , and Bucs line play is not where it needs to be on either side to make a deep playoff run. McCoy and MeSean are gone and will only help cap space , and Bucs need it. Make the additions to the Oline through the draft , some awesome talent available (should have moved up one to get Quentin Nelson last year ,Licht blew it again). Dline needs through free agency and please get a safety that can read and react.
January 17th, 2019 at 2:27 pm
No way we should pay McSofty next year. I don’t care what we get, or don’t, for him as long as he’s off the roster.
January 17th, 2019 at 2:28 pm
I’d like to remember GMC as giving the best years of his career to a team with a never ending clown car of idiots running the show, acquiring talent, and planning the schemes.
January 17th, 2019 at 2:35 pm
Allen and Unrein count $8M against the cap in 2019.
Unrein didn’t play a down in 2018 and Allen was largely invisible all year.
So which makes more sense – keeping Allen and Unrein for $8M – or McCoy for $13?
I do agree that McCoy is no longer worth $13M per year – but if Licht could get him to re-structure down to about $8 or $9M per year – it would definitely be worth keeping GMC IMO.
Bowles will figure out how to use Gerald’s talents. Hell, its even possible that McCoy could still have his best season ever in 2019 with JPP, Vea and Nassib surrounding him…
January 17th, 2019 at 3:26 pm
Hate that I missed all the fireworks earlier, but there’s a lot of good stuff in this thread.
LUVMYBUCS … You’re right about Jameis & DJax connection (or non-connection as the case may be). Jameis rarely leads receivers perfectly such that they catch the ball in stride … that’s not his strength (at this point in his career at least). Guys like ME13 & OJ (and even Godwin to a lesser degree) are great at out-muscling the defenders for the deeper balls. DJax isn’t.
David … agree that there’s no reason for teams to trade for GMC or DJax given the amount of money they make. Wait until they’re released & make them an offer IF they fit into your plans.
LUVMYBUCS … “If Licht can’t get some type of compensation for GMC. He should be fired on the spot”. What team in your eyes would trade for GMC & his $13 mil salary WITHOUT requiring us to eat at least half of that contract? And since we can release him with no money owed & dead money on the CAP, why would we eat any part of his contract? Do like the 2nd part of your statement though, just on principle.
813bucboi … Do agree with re-signing Hump (at $5-$7 mil max). Still unsure about Donovan … don’t want to see him as our starting LT again, but if the new coaching staff believes he’s got what it takes to be a starting Guard, I’d say re-sign him (not at LT $$$ however). Right now our OLine is a gigantic mess & we’re not going anywhere unless we fix it (I only see 2 quality starters under contract right now … Jensen & Marpet). Given our other NEEDS & lack of $$$ to fix stuff with, we’re in trouble as of right now (our 5-11 records for 2017 & 2018 kinda gave that away however). Also, Barber, Wester & Liedtke are all RFA (not UFAs) so I think that all we have to do is tender them to keep them.
@Joe … “Given that the Bucs are about $16.5 million under the salary cap going into 2019, there is a real chance McCoy won’t return.” I agree Joe UNLESS GMC is willing to settle for considerably less (he’d me a good deal for a year at say half of his $13 mil salary. But beyond that, I thought I read on Spotrac this morning that Bucs only had $8,779,406 of CAP space.

Perhaps there are a couple of Free Agents the Bucs really want. Otherwise I don’t see a good reason to part with McCoy just for cap space. I believe in the end he’ll just end up staying for $13M.

if gmc is on this roster B.A. will fail and bucs will achieve another basement title. simple as that. bucs have never won a meaningful game with gmc on the roster and they never will. get that pos cancer off the team mr licht…

2019 Salary Cap Totals | Assuming an $189,000,000 team salary cap.
• New York Jets | $98,104,238 ←
• Cleveland Browns | $75,317,961 ←
• Oakland Raiders | $73,484,412
• Dallas Cowboys | $48,525,246
With the arrival of (DC), Greg Williams – the Jets have switched to a 4-3.
And currently how the roster is constructed; they don’t have all the pieces.
Leonard Williams (5-tech) is currently in a contract year, and there’s been grumbling around the NFL – that he hasn’t lived up to the team’s lofty expectations. So this could be his last year in big green.
Possible Leonard Williams for Gerald McCoy (+future considerations) Swap?

With a ton of cap space – plus the need for a 3 Tech, the Browns could be another solid destination.

William Gholston sucks !!!!! Please don’t include him on roster ever again Mrs Laine. He has been stealing money past few years. He has to go before McCoy and clear up his 6-7 million a year
