Ranking Bucs Opening

January 5th, 2019

Unfair criticism?

Folks who like to sit on their trendy upper westside condo balconies overlooking the Hudson River, throwing NFL knowledge at the unwashed, tend to think the Bucs’ opening for head coach is a rotten job.

But what do NFL folks think?

Mike Sando of BSPN decided to take a poll of random NFL suits and coaches to find out which of the eight openings is either desirable or one to run away from.

Sando has the Bucs’ gig ranked at No. 6. Sando lists the pros and cons of the job.

Winston and the front office could be entering a make-or-break year, and there’s little evidence that ownership has a coherent winning plan. The next head coach will be the team’s fifth since Jon Gruden’s departure a decade ago.

“It seems like everything they do is to satisfy a short-term need,” an exec said. “What kind of runway will you have as a head coach? How does that mesh with the lack of a plan elsewhere?”

Joe understands that a lot of people hammer Team Glazer for dumping coaches after two successive losing seasons. Now if this is so dastardly, Joe has to ask: What have Raheem Morris, Greg Schiano or Lovie Smith done since they were axed by Team Glazer to suggest they were wronged in being tossed out onto Martin Luther King Blvd.?

Morris and Schiano have yet to find a head coaching gig and Lovie is in the midst of completely destroying a once proud Big Ten program.

The problem here isn’t that bad coaches are getting fired, it’s that bad coaches are getting hired.

it’s that INEPT owners are making the decisions …..

  2. Steve in Mad Beach Says:

Fire away until you find the right coach!

  3. Bob in Valrico Says:

That approach has failed quite often in free agent signing decisions. Is pretty hard to see the light at the end of the for many of coaches that have been fired after a short stint here.As much as like Bruce Arians, I think it would be smarter to seek a longer term solution to our revolving door of coaches.

  4. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Bob right on because Arians will be a short time coach as well, seems like only a year ago cleveland was the worst nfl franchise

  5. VFL98 Says:

Actually Joe, Lovie just received a contract extension and is starting to increase recruiting with a lot of good players. He inherited a mess at U of I and it’s going to take some time. So completely destroying a once proud Big Ten program is completely false!!!

  6. Tnew Says:

Why a director of football makes sense to many of us. Find someone with a long term plan versus guys trying to keep a job.

  7. Easy Says:

If they bring in Dabo Swinney all will be forgiven for being incompetent owners.

  8. Issaic haggins Says:

Actually think Schiano was a good coach that needed some senior mentoring which the Glazers failed to provide ( good ownership vs bad ). The other three just aren’t head coaches !!! Koetter was the best of the three but Raheem may actually have a chance as he grows down the road .

It’s completely true. Lovie is just a god awful coach.

    Nobody respects the Bucs

We need to bring RESPECT back to Tampa bay!!!

  11. Ateonetree Says:

Damn joe you hit the hammer on head with that last post about bad coaches getting hired. Look I think a lot of this is just smoke in the air about the bucs head coaching gig being a undesirable job. A Good coaching canadiate with some passion and CONFIDENCE will look at this job opening and go holy cow, a top 5 offense , an extremely young and talented quarterback, owners who are willing to spend money on free agents and a fan base that’s desperate to cheer for something positive (we just haven’t had anything in 10 years) and go I CAN TURN THIS S#%^ around I just need a chance.

  12. Tony LA Says:

    Arians.
    Only candidate that makes sense.

  13. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I also agree Schiano was a good coach…………..but he came IN HERE with the wrong mentality

……………….you can’t treat grown azz men like college students….no way

If Schiano would’ve been mentored right, he would’ve kicked arse here for many years……

  14. Bucsace Says:

Lovie got that contract extension because Illinois was handcuffed by his excessively large early termination buyout, Lovie presided over the worst defeat in Illinois football history last season, a 63 to 0 blowout to Iowa, Lovie is an awful coach, when his buyout money figure gets lower, he’ll be history and back on his couch, hopefully for good this time!!!

Ahhhh… as a longtime Iowa Hawkeyes fan… the Lovie Smith hiring at Illinois was a beautiful thing.

  18. Colonel Angus Says:

I think the lack of a plan is the key there. Hiring for the short term problem, after Raheem they hired Schiano to clean up the perceived bad apples. They had a plan with Lovie trying to relive 1997 (changing uniforms, hiring a coach that was here during that era, etc). That of course failed. Then promoting Koetter to keep continuity with Winston’s development. They need to get a coach who has a complete team vision for all 3 phases of the game, a true team identity.

but his old ways just needs to retire off into the Sunset

  21. R.O. Says:

You think Schiano would have put either some of the Grown azz men you think most of these players are? Like Swaggy and Desean and now Grimes. You treat people like grownups until they prove they aren’t which has been the situation in TB. My feeling if you hire a coach like Schiano, you need to allow him to grow and evolve and let the players do the same. These are million dollar babies.. and some need to be treated like children.

  22. R.O. Says:

You people are jokes.. you whine and complain about lack of discipline. If Players can’t follow the simple things and instructions during warm ups and practice why would you expect them to during a game… How you practice during the week directly translates to Sunday’s. You’re g- dam right TOE’s on the LINE!!!

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think we can agree that Arians is not a bad coach…..so, the hiring of bad coaches should be over.

If he passes, we can do a “Weekend at Bernies” and prop him up on the sidelines….just make sure he has competent assistants.

  24. Troy Says:

Schiano’s the only coach we’ve had in the last decade that could end the nonsense we have now. There is no professionalism. It’s pathetic. If it takes toes on a freaking line to get some structure and discipline, then so be it.

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie hasn’t beat USF while at Illinois, that’s pathetic.

  26. Doc Says:

If coach Arians, is such a good coach, why is his name not associated with other teams.

  27. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Def thought schiano deserved another year with all the BS he had to endure from MRSA to being saddled by dominik w that crappy “franchise qb” the bucs defense under schiano was tough and GMC & LVD were legit all-pros then

  28. tnew Says:

The problem is that so many of the hirings were as a result of fear. Was Gruden successful, yes, no question. But the panic due to the Parcell’s Jilting resulted in giving up premium draft picks which resulting into bloated free agents signings that killed the franchise. Raheem was a fear that the Broncos were hiring the next Mike Tomlin. Schiano, just a knee jerk to the Raheem mess after a second jilting from Chip Kelly. Lovie Smith, wanted a big name and then Koetter was again fear that he was going to end up with the Dolphins.

That’s a mess. That’s why a better football voice should have more long term power with this franchise. Everyone tells me its a good thing how the Glazers are not very hand’s on with the Bucs. But these hands off, seemingly unattached owners, are making the most critical decisions for the team. Licht is not hiring the head coach, Ira has been clear about this.

  29. Not there yet Says:

I agree completely yes they keep firing coaches but they keep making horrible decisions on who to hire in the first place. I’m hoping they finally took a look in the mirror and had an nfl licht give them a list of guys who were interviewed and say this guy is the best but go ahead and choose between these candidates, that at least reduces the glazer effect. They still will look at the list and choose who will make a splash not who will actually win games because we know the most important thing to the glazers is winning the off-season and they are very successful at it

Fragile locker room full of red flags, a giant one at QB, and a giant red flag welcoming patrons to the facility. No coach is saving it, it’s on the con artists in the locker room sucking money out of One Buc.

This website is mostly con but if any of the Joes are up for nominating a post for the lifetime post achievement you need to give this person a prize. The only post to describe the dysfunction at One Buc, clear and perfect.

Hey Joe! How about a Lovie Watch segment on the site……lots of clicks!!!

  33. Patrick Says:

Hire Bruce Arians and just keep an ambulance on the sideline at Ray Jay every Sunday.

  34. Defense Rules Says:

@Mike Sando … “It seems like everything they do is to satisfy a short-term need,” an exec said. “What kind of runway will you have as a head coach? How does that mesh with the lack of a plan elsewhere?”

Sando just hit a home run IMO Joe. Satisfying short-term needs? Yup. Lack of a plan? Yea verily. And that’s why hiring “a director of football makes sense to many of us” like Tnew said. It seems readily apparent to me (after 5 years now) that Lapdog Licht isn’t the ‘voice of reason’ that the Glazer Committee of Four needs to create & manage the IDENTITY & VISION that this team needs to recover from this black hole it finds itself in. My gut keeps telling me that Lapdog was exactly the GM that Lovie wanted so he could have his own way personnel-wise (last thing Lovie wanted I surmise was a strong GM who’d stand up to him). And yet, a strong GM who’ll stand up to BOTH the owners AND the coaches is exactly what we’ve been needing since Rich McKay left. Lacking that, we could surely use a President of Football Operations to act as the adult in this crowd.

  35. Joe Says:

Actually Joe, Lovie just received a contract extension and is starting to increase recruiting with a lot of good players. He inherited a mess at U of I

    And made it worse.

Even that nitwit Tim Beckman got the Illini to a bowl game.

  36. Loyaltotheend Says:

Fair assessment and I love my upper west side apartment

  37. Ptwalk Says:

I believe most of you have forgotten the Schiano era, if you actually think he should still be coaching this team. I’d rather have Koetter.

  38. Jean Lafitte Says:

The Buccaneers, where former NFL coaches careers have come to die.

  39. danr Says:

the answer is simple its not the firings that are at fault, it is the hirings.

Dont hire people who you would be in the right to fire in 2 years.

    this IS on the owners.

  40. VFL98 Says:

    Joe Says:
    And made it worse.
Even that nitwit Tim Beckman got the Illini to a bowl game.

You Joe obviously have no ide what your talking about. Zook was the best recruiter but couldn’t coach. Beckman couldn’t do either and destroyed U Of I. Lovie is bringing them back very slowly but to say HE is destroying a once proud Big Ten team is completely FALSE!!! However, I’m not saying Lovie is a good coach but my wife is an Alumni and we attend games and trust me it was destroyed under Beckman.

  41. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Joe

Agree completely with your rationale on why the Glazers have fired guys and I think everybody they fired deserved it.

The problem is that it’s a two sided coin. Yeah the firings were deserved but at some point don’t we have to ask who HIRED all these losers and isn’t there some responsibility there?

  42. The Coroner Says:

What did Morris, Schiano and Smith do to get hired.
Urlacher and company got the Bears to the playoffs
Lovie just went along for the ride

  43. Bucsace Says:

Lovie wishs right now that he was laying on his couch at home with that $12 million in early termination buyout money from Illinois in his bank account

  44. SOEbuc Says:

    The Coroner

“What did Morris, Schiano and Smith do to get hired.”

What the hell did Koetter do to get hired? First year OC and an 8-8 record.

  45. Fire Light Says:

Bingo. BUCS job is #1 Job. Thanks Joes for actually doing some real reporting. Not like the Fake Sports News Media

  46. Ed Says:

Had fun watching Quinton Nelson destroying Texans defensive linemen letting USF’s Marlon Mack run for over 100 yards. Our fifth win last year was the game that cost us Nelson.

Seattle on the other hand couldn’t run the ball vs Dallas so I guess Sweezy wasn’t the mauler to open up the holes for Seattle’s RB.

By the way I don’t think anyone considered Frank Reich a “splash” coaching candidate when Indy made their coaching change. Indy’s defense totally got to DeShawn Watson, watching the Texans yesterday was like a flashback, I thought I was watching the Bucs the way they played. For a home game that was a pathetic performance by the Texans.

That game was over. How about Booger McFarland talking up Derrick Brooks and the “Tampa 2” that Indy played. Indy was fantastic on D yesterday.
