Bucs Opportunity With “Smitten” Elway

January 29th, 2019

Broncos GM John Elway

The Broncos hit the draft Lotto jackpot this season with DE Bradley Chubb at the No. 5 overall pick. What a productive, 12-sack rookie monster he was.

This year, the Bucs own the No. 5 overall pick and Denver might be aching to trade up to that spot.

That was the chatter yesterday from the Denver Post beat writers. Apparently it was common knowledge at the Senior Bowl that Denver GM John Elway is “smitten” with Missouri QB Drew Lock.

Self-proclaimed quarterback guru Jon Gruden coached Lock in the game and raved about after a practice last week on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“I think what Drew Lock is what everybody thought he was. He’s got a quick, accurate arm. He’s got a lot of intelligence,” Chucky said. “We’re trying to unlock some of the athleticism he has inside of him. But this guy’s got a real good feel for playing quarterback.”

Lock’s stock only went up last week and the Broncos pick at No. 10 overall, behind the Giants (No. 6) and the Jaguars (No. 7), two more teams in need of a quarterback upgrade, assuming neither lands Nick Foles before the draft.

Trading down in the first round didn’t do much for the Bucs last year, though that verdict could change in time.
.
Trading down this year with Elway could net a more significant windfall, as the stakes are always higher when a QB is involved. Could the Bucs swap first-rounders with Denver and grab their second-round picks in 2019 and 2020? Joe would be very excited about that.

I agree with the Drew Lock summation…I was banging his drum as a Buc pick last offseason…he has the skills and killer attitude to go along with being a great teammate

  2. Bruce Blahak Says:

trade up for Nelson was the play last year but trading down is usually a good thing…and the Bucs need to get multiple trench players in this draft

  3. ben Says:

maybe bucs should draft Drew Lock …just in case?

  4. Kobe Faker Says:

“We have no 3rd round pick so we need to trade down…

we need 3 starters in this years draft ”

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

    Kobe…we DO have a 3rd round pick in 2019….

  6. Anonymous Says:

Str8 trade 93 for Shane Ray who wants out now that they smitten with Chubb. Q. Williams is the cream of this crop. In 94 snap all that pass from kc didn’t touch brady once. In the falcons/pats superbowl Grady Jarret terrorised them from the inside. Much like Aron Donald is about to do Sunday.

  7. ManzielMadness Says:

    @Kobe

Pretty sure we do have 3rd round pick, the trade for JPP involved last years 3rd rounder.

  8. Darin Says:

A qb was involved last year with Buf. I didnt mind the picks they got for that 5 spot drop tho. Do it again if the guy they want isnt there or if they think he’ll be there at pick 10. More picks equals more chances to improve.

    Kobe
    Google is your friend.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Don’t write off last year’s picks just yet.

  11. JA Says:

By going to Denver, Chubb won the pass rusher gift horse. Granted, he’s a good player, but having Von Miller double-teamed on every play has a tendency to make a good pass rushing teammate look great.
JPP had no such luxury, making his 12.5 sacks a much harder earned feat than Chubb’s.
As for trading down with Denver … a little premature for that, ya think? Let’s at least wait for the combines and wait for this year’s “surprise player” to make his “he really wow’d them” appearance.

This draft is supposedly loaded with defensive talent…offense not so much.

Two mocks I saw had us taking Oliver or Greedy. The guys pounding the drum for OL have won me over especially this year.

The top four will be DL studs..leaving us without that generational player.

OL have really dropped. Walter Football does have us picking Gator Juwaan Taylor…3 year starter who is coming out early and looked good against some tough teams last year. I would be happy with him but not at #5. The rest of the sites have only one OT in the top 15 and Taylor is a 2nd rounder on many of them. Two massive tackles would be nice for our team and we’d get two guys with cheap contracts for awhile. I’m not a Smith basher nor a GMC basher but they both have just been around too long salary wise and are not worth the fortunes they would cost.

If the QB pressure continues to build and we could get the trade Joe just mentioned I’d jump on it. We could get at least two solid OT picks with a first rounder and second rounder and then draft D the rest of the way including one of those second rounders.

  13. Billy Says:

I hope we don’t trade down if Bosa, Williams, Allen or White are available.
If they go 1-4 then I don’t care.
Hopefully Greedy falls to 10 if so.

Don’t see anyone else worth a top 5 pick

  14. TexBuc Says:

    Trade down Bucco Bruce

  15. 813bucboi Says:

imo, drew lock is the best QB in the draft….watch him over the years and he’s gotten better each year and played vs the tough competition….

i would welcome a trade down….at #10 ed oliver, dexter lawerance, j.simmons, montez sweat, jachi polite all might be there…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

    No, we’re good.

The second round – Lichts Achilles Heel.

  18. rrsrq Says:

Trade back if ya can, then go lock Jason up in a closet until day 3 of the draft.

  19. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Great win to close out 2017 over the Saints really helped this franchise as usual at least this year they lost to get in an area of the draft that hopefully bruce arians will be calling the shots and be successful, because jason licht cannot decipher a turnip from a competent OL or rb

  20. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

RRSQ…now that right there is funny but dead on what should happen

  21. Syl Says:

Well…Drew lock will be the final straw get get Elway fired. After Haskins there are no first round QB’s in this class.

  22. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Thanks everyone for the correction”

  23. Lord Cornelius Says:

Yeah that’d be a solid deal. Especially considering the 2nd we’d get would be pick #41.

Should be able to net 3 impact players out of picks 10 / 38 / 41. And should be able to find at least one contributor between your round 3-5 picks

  24. Buc believer Says:

Absolutely make the trade! Ask for 2 farms and settle for a farm and a half! It’s about time WE take advantage of someone!

  25. Joeypoppems Says:

Mock draft season has definitely brought my excitement down lol. It kinda reminds us of how many holes there are to fill.

Trading back is always an option when u arent picking a qb.

Im all for picking a trench player this year. OT is biggest need but the idea of pairing Quinen Williams or Ed Oliver with Vea if gmc is gone is a fun fantasy

  26. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Joey

That fantasy is what keeps playing out in my head as well.

The Rams lead the league in QB pressure last year and their best pass rushers are DTs. Michael Brockers is listed as DE but is 6’5 300 lbs lol.

A starting line with Vea/Oliver/JPP/Nassib sounds pretty damn good to me. That’s 3 young building blocks and ideally we draft a DE in the top 3 rounds to also train under JPP/Nassib for the future.

  27. Buccnbeleiver Says:

Imagine if all this crap about Winston being the guy was just a ruse.

A guy can dream, I suppose.

No different than people dreaming he’ll suddenly turn potential into Ws, I suppose.

  28. destinjohnny Says:

Jason will blow the picks anyway so why trade back

  29. Jean Lafitte Says:

    me too..

  30. BigMacAttack Says:

If the QB is there at 5, the value could go up if a bidding war ensued between the Broncos, Giants and Jags. Doubtful, but I’d rather drop 1 or 2 instead of 5 slots.

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

There has been a lot of criticism and worry about Licht going into the draft. I certainly understand that and am not saying it’s unfounded.

But I am comforted by the fact that BA is the new sheriff in town. Licht pretty much got Koetter his job and Koetter trusted Licht to get him the talent.

It’s been totally reversed now. Licht would be gone if it wasn’t for his connection that brought BA here. I suspect that BA will have far more to say about this year’s draft than Koetter ever had….perhaps even final say.

  32. TDTB Says:

Bucs need to trade down twice if not three times in 1st round to land somewhere between 15 and 18. Either Taylor, Little or Risner will be there. Then grab Scharping in 4th or 5th round. Grab Tyree Jackson as back up QB in 3rd round. Get primary back in 2nd round (Jacobs, Harris or Montgomery). Look for Singletary or Holyfield for RB depth in 5th. If they trade down should have one or two picks to use on DE. Like Omenihu in 2nd. Like Sutton or Crosby DE in 5th/6th.

  33. Stanglassman Says:

Licht and the scouting department will draft the players and Arians and his staff will coach the team. I realize that sounds obvious but I think unfounded speculation that a coach with no NFL scouting experience will do Licht’s job especially when his background is as a scout is just silly. I’m sure Arians will have plenty of input on players in both type and rank but Licht will be making the final call.

  34. TOM Says:

Keep Licht away from the draft room.
