One Of “The Wolfs” Returns As A Member Of The Bucs’ Coaching Staff

January 15th, 2019

Joe loves the latest Buccaneers coaching hires.

First, a little background. Back in the miracle season of 2010 — you better believe 10-6 is miraculous around here — head coach Raheem Morris had 10 rookies start throughout the season. It was an extraordinary young team with a 22-year-old talented quarterback who was tremendous.

One of those rookies was seventh-round pick Cody Grimm, a hard-hitting undersized safety, the son of Hall of Famer Russ Grimm, who coached with new Bucs head coach Bucco Bruce Arians in Pittsburgh.

Cody Grimm had a solid, injury-plagued career, but Raheem absolutely loved the kid. In fact, he believed he was a Pulp Fiction character — like only Raheem could.

“We call those guys back there the Wolfs. It’s kinda like Pulp Fiction. You gotta clean up a mess, you call The Wolf,” Raheem said. “They sent the Wolf and I was excited. … We missed some run gaps on Adrian Peterson, missed some tackles. And the Wolfs just didn’t let him break out to 60 yard touchdown runs. They sawed him down in the middle of the field, got him down on the grass and gave us another opportunity to get the ball back for [Freeman]. So I’m excited about my young Wolf [Grimm] back there lurking.”

Per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Grimm, 31, has been hired by the Bucs has a defensive backs/special teams assistant. He had been coaching at Virginia Tech, where he was a standout player.

Also hired as an offensive assistant, per Stroud, is former Redskins and Steelers wide receiver Antwaan Randle El, who played for Arians in Pittsburgh (2010) when they won a Super Bowl. Joe loves the idea of bringing in a former established NFL receiver to work with the Bucs’ veteran corps.

Don’t think there will be a loyalty problem on the coaching staff….damn !…hope they’ll have offices for them all

  2. pick6 Says:

Arians has a clear preference for coaches who played the game, i think he believes (rightly so) that they have much more credibility to hold their players accountable to have a battling mindset. we saw how comfortable a guy like brenston buckner was with asking his guys to go all out and play with a mean streak. it’s no guarantee they can analyze and improve a player’s game, but it’s good to see that the head coach knows what he wants out of assistants and probably out of players

  3. 813bucboi Says:

loved grimm when he was here…..

    i agree joe….

love the fact that bruce is bringing in young ex players to assist him….players can relate to the coaches because theyve been there done that and they are old enough to know about “old school” football but young enough to be innovative…..

folks know who i wanted but this hire is looking more and lmore like a slam dunk!!!!!!

this is shaping up to be an excellent coaching staff…..

regarding assembling a coaching staff, job well done Bruce!!!!!!

now its about drafting, signing FA’s and winning games!!!!!

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!…#GO BUCS!!!!!

  4. Bradentonbuc Says:

Unsure of quality but excited by the promise of these two kinds of coaches. Always wondered what came of Grimm

  5. Pryda..sec147 Says:

I am shocked I wonder is there a limit to how many coaches a Head coach can have to work for him ? I mean I might be wrong but it seems like a huge staff so far. #cultureshock

  6. J dubb Says:

Hey Joe, can u confirm Alan cross is retiring? I hope not as he is an unsung, do it all, don’t get credit type of guy, but if so I wish him well.

  7. Fix-it-already Says:

If Grimm is one of the wolves…I guess the ones from the previous staff were a bunch of GIMPS

  8. Tackleblockwin Says:

Well Coach did say he will have two practices on both fields so younger players can get more experience. I assume the extra hands on the coaching staff will be required.

  9. BucEmUp Says:

Loved watching Grimm play back then. The guy always played with a ton of passion and feared nobody

  10. Eastsidebuc Says:

Use to love watching Cody Grim play. Straight BOSS!!!

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Loved Cody Grimm…….we need to find a few more like him.

  12. GhostofSchiano Says:

He was not my first choice for Head Coach but it is hard to not get excited for the 2019 season. Very pleased with the staff he has assembled. Bring on the draft and free agency. Curious to see what moves are made as there is prior chemistry between BA and Licht, should see some great results.

  13. Nick2 Says:

Great hires, I can remember both of them and Randle El was a quarterback turned wide receiver if memory serves me right. Cody Grimm was a flat out baller that probably would have had a great career but the injury bug cut it short. I love the hires. Arians desire to have so many coaches comes from his idea of having a practice running alongside the vets for rookies and I love it. As long as the Glazers will fund it I say bring it on the more experience the young guys can get the better. Great job Joe I like the news it keeps getting better.

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

Here’s the hire I’m waiting to see.

Coordinator in charge of monitoring JBF and educating the posters. LOL

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

May have to have two planes to carry everyone…..

  16. gbobucsfan Says:

Food for thought – Grimm was drafted in the same draft as McCoy.

  17. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Welcome back Cody.

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Bucsfanman

Lol, we were just talking about this brotha a few weeks ago.

  19. canadianbucsfan Says:

    @Pryda
Do you remember how big schianos staff was?

  20. Max Says:

Rather have his dad, that guy can teach some o-line!

  21. canadianbucsfan Says:

Was a big fan of Grimm . Really thought we had found a diamond in the rough there. Between him Blount, mike Williams and many others it really seemed like we had one of the best younge teams.

  22. DooshLaRue Says:

Never heard the Wolf story, that’s funny.

Good hire I think………. but let’s not start sucking each other’s d!cks just yet boys.

  23. Mike Johnson Says:

Well now…We can’t say we cannot WIN becuse of the coaching next year huh? Arians is hiring..seems like..twice the coaching staff anybody else has had around here. Maybe not..But it sure seems like he is. If that creates more wins for us though..I’m all in.

  24. DB55 Says:

Always liked Grimm. Kinda like I luv Alan Cross. Role players are key especially those that come to play.

  25. GoBuxFla Says:

I love it. Now the rookies and younger players have no excuse like “I didn’t get enough coaching” to fall back on. It’s all on them to listen and learn.

  26. StAugBuc Says:

Never heard the Wolf story, that’s funny.

Good hire I think………. but let’s not start sucking each other’s d!cks just yet boys.

Rest assured…there will never be a time when that starts

  27. VA2SCBUC Says:

If hes running two practicess to get the young players reps, he would need a large staff. I like what he’s doing….all the names are quality, meaning he will have quality player development….something we have lacked for a LONG time.

  28. Mikiebucsfan76 Says:

joe when will the bucs release the final coaching list. I am not sure who joined and who didn’t. a lot of names have been thrown around but Ive only seen 4 listed. Arians ,Bowles, Goodwin and Armstrong

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Well, well, well. Cody Grimm. This should be interesting.

I remember when Tony Dungy was hired. He went after only a few older coaches, and then went after the younger guys like Tomlin.

Arians seems to be following the same pattern. With the new NFL rules, he understands that younger coaches adjust easier than older ones. After all, you can’t teach old dogs new tricks.

He is building a highly adaptable coaching staff.

Gruden had a large number of staff members too I think.

  30. Owlykat Says:

Thrilled Grimm is back. He will be great working with our short hard hitting phenom, Jordan Whitehead, who I think is capable to be a great Strong Safety for us who also was a great running back in college too. Our new receiver Coach was a great player for Pittsburg and should be able to help Watson step up for more playing time this year. Grimm needs to teach Jason Evans how to be an aggressive tackler. If he can master that he is a fast playmaking Free Safety who should start with Whitehead. We need to keep Harris as a safety backup. I think MJ Stewart should be developed as the other backup Safety. He would work well as an in the box Safety to stop runs. Rhonde Barber was not fast either but he was great in the box. We need one veteran Free Agent CB who can play man to man and zone both and we have experienced young CBS who just need better Coaching which they will get. The Clemson DC showed how devastating well coached disguising coverages can be in getting turnovers. Hopefully our DC took some notes watching that defense! We have the Coaches to get there if we want. I am glad Buckner is staying and can keep our Defensive front improving even more in their second year together.

  31. Mike Says:

Bruce seems quite entertaining but I think Raheem will always win the day when it comes to best sound bytes.

  32. Ptwalk Says:

Arians knows that a head coach is only as good as the coaches he surrounds himself with.

  33. Knucknbuc Says:

Raheem love that dude was still the best season this team has had for a decade lol. How that guy hasnt gotten another opportunity to be a hc is beyond me and some scrub like kliff kingsbury can who couldnt hack it at Texas tech is perplexing to say the least….or maybe we all know why?? Hmm…..

  34. Easy Says:

    Talib ruined Grimms career.

  35. SOEbuc Says:

And BA can pick em. His staff’s are well known for moving up to higher positions throughout the league. Wouldn’t think he would be picking these young guys to coach just because they were good players. FINALLY WHAT SOUNDS LIKE A F#CKING COACHING SQUAD!!! Now it’s on you players.

  36. EA Says:

Im digging all these former players BA is bringing in.

  37. SOEbuc Says:

    Owlykat

“I am glad Buckner is staying and can keep our Defensive front improving even more in their second year together.”

Buckner is not staying. Think he’s meeting up with the Raiders for DL coach unless something changed recently.

  38. SailorJerry Says:

Joe, when the dust settles would you be willing to post an org chart of coaches. It seems that accountability is going to be a big focus and I’d like to understand the reporting structure.

  39. SOEbuc Says:

I have also always thought Stewart would be a better box safety. He doesn’t have good feet off the line but he can get all over the field quickly and lay the smack down. Cody come show him, Evans, and Whitehead how it’s done.

  40. SOEbuc Says:

Watched a video of Kwon rehab. 7 leg press what looked to be about 100-150 lbs (couldn’t tell). Legs were definintly looking thin??? Plenty of time till next September but that’s something we need to think of in FA having no cap space at the moment.

  41. BucLover727 Says:

    Awesome!

    Welcome back, Cody!

  42. teacherman777 Says:

Cody Grimm was the man! until he broke his leg.

He sacrificed his body on every snap!!

We are blessed to have him!!

Antwan Randal El?? Hes a LEGEND!

    90’s kids will remember.

    Great hires!

  43. Bucsfanman Says:

LUV- You know how I feel about this “kid”! Absolutely LOVE me some Cody Grimm. If not for injuries, boy, I tell you what.
Oh, and ANOTHER Hokie Alum! Welcome back Cody!
