“I Call BS On That”

It’s uncommon for a media guest to be summoned to national radio for an interview and then get interrupted with a bark of, “I call BS on that!”

That’s what happened to a Bucs beat writer a day after justice was served to Dirk Koetter by Team Glazer.

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times newspaper joined former Patriots, Chiefs and Jets offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and co-host Bob Papa on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Monday.

Stroud was talking about how well America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, pushes balls down the field with 20-yard throws but struggles with the deep ball. As soon as Stroud starting wagging a finger and Jameis’ deep balls and connecting with DeSean Jackson, Weis cut him off.

“I call BS on that,” Weis said twice. “If you can hit one guy with the deep ball you can hit another.” Weis went on to talk about Jameis’ connection with Mike Evans and more.

As Joe has written several times, Jameis and Evans? They’re great together. Cameron Brate and Chris Godwin? Plenty of chemistry with Jameis, even in the red zone.

In Jameis’ first start back this season, he was 4-for-4 on targets to O.J. Howard. No issues there. Of course, Jameis and Adam Humphries have always been in perfect sync.

Is Jameis one of the great deep ball throwers in the NFL? No. But let’s see how deficient he is on the home run ball once Jackson is off the roster.

  1. Deminion Says:

Arians is gunna make Winston even better

  2. Not there yet Says:

I am so ready to know who the next head coach will be, Winston can’t possibly be worse than he was under Koetter and if the entire team improves then we will know for sure Koetter was the joke he appeared to be. He kept Lovie coaches and didn’t even try to get a new quarterback coach voice in the kids ear. It appears they didn’t try to develop anyone they either had to come here skilled or they just end up being called a bust

  3. Geno Says:

But the crux is that Jameis is not good on the deep ball. Weis has not watched Jameis like we have for the last 4 years. We know better. It was Weis that goofed in the show not Stroud. We should all be finger wagging at Weis for his lack of knowledge on a subject. He should have let the local finish his thought process.

Jameis is 17th to 20th best starter in the league and deserves a 5th year.

  4. OneBucPerson Says:

The biggest issue with Jameis’s deep ball attempts is that more times than not he’s throwing to a guy who is already covered, can we not try scheming guys opens for once? On top of that with how abysmal our O-line has been if we commit to it like the Colts did last year I think it could pay dividends.

  5. Buc4life Says:

I know Jameis will be fine without DJAX. As long as O.J. and Humpries come back we will be fine with our WR corp.

  6. BucFan3 Says:

Trade MeSean Jackson to Buffalo for 3rd round picks.

  7. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

It’s obvious Jamies didn’t like Desean Jackson because Djax said “stay with the hot hand” and BS’d his passes to him. That’s VERY unprofessional of Jamies and why he is still an immature stupid child that can’t control his emotions.

I hope this new head coach comes in and straightens Jamies out

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

“We need a dual threat runningback(Run and Receiver) 3 down back ala David Johnson

Screens/wheel routes on 1st down as well as 3rd down…

to pull the linebackers in to defend the 1st 10 yards…

than JW can throw over them where OJ, MeMe and Godwin can eat”

    Kobe Faker

  9. jmarkbuc Says:

DJAx and McCoy to AZ for DJohnson, or more reasonably, Patrick Peterson

  10. Hodad Says:

Even though D Jax threw Jameis under the bus, Jameis said publicly D Jax was a good team mate. Jameis has matured this year on, and off the field. Let’s hope with the right H.C. this could be the sign of good times to come.

  11. Jean Lafitte Says:

Jameis is about 1 for every 5 throws on deep routes. All Joe remembers is the completions but has a short memory on the inaccurate over throws.

  12. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

LOL…except for leading Evans out of bounds, getting him almost decapitated. That’s why Evans is always going to the ground after a catch because Jameis does the above.

  13. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Geno please list in order the 16-19 other QBs who are better than Jameis.

  14. Krojen Says:

There’s a big difference between hitting a lumbering wide catch radius Mike Evans on 50/50 balls and hitting a lighting fast small target downfield.

Anyone saying there’s no difference between hitting one receiver over another either hasn’t thought about what they’re saying or being intellectually dishonest.

  15. Stanglassman Says:

You get about 2-4 Qbs in and then you start naming a bunch of guys who will retire in a year or two.

  16. Phillip Says:

Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Mahomes, Ryan, Newton, Baker, Goff, Wentz, Luck, Big Ben, Rivers, Wilson, Watson are all easily better than Jameis

Alex Smith, Stafford, Dak, Mitchell, and Cousins are as good if not better as well

  17. Phillip Says:

Then emerging rookies with no talent to throw to like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson

Jimmy G could be as well if he can get a full season

  18. Old Sombrero Kid Says:

    I agree with Allen ^^^^-

  19. Old Sombrero Kid Says:

    I agree with Phillip^^^^-

  20. bucs4ya Says:

I think the biggest difference in the deep ball of Jameis and Fitz is that Fitz puts more air on the ball allowing the receiver to run under it. If Jameis puts more air on the ball I think we see his completion rate on deep balls increase.

  21. Stanglassman Says:

Just like I said You got a hand full. Wilson, Mahomes, Wentz (if he can stay healthy) Goff? (Maybe up and down with the best Rb and great Def). Then you got a lot of guys who will retire soon. Remember Carr and Dak were thought to be better a year or two ago. I like Lamar but he hasn’t shown any pocket passing ability and Cam wasn’t that good to began with & time will tell if he ever get power back from that shoulder injury.

  22. Stanglassman Says:

*Luck and Maybe Watt. Watt is a better runner and deep passer. But I think Winston is a better overall Qb. I’d love to see Winston with a great Def like Houston. As soon as Jameis didn’t feel like he had to score on every drive because the Def started playing better the turnovers stopped. Anyone expecting JW3 to come in without training camp 1st team reps and 5 week layoff and not be rusty weren’t being realistic.

But I’m a Bucs fan so I’ll defend & I like our Qb.

  23. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

On a different note I hope Arians becomes our hc and we can get Kris Richard as our DC/AHC n when arains retires he can take over. Only unlikely to work out that way cuz before Arians would retire someone would offer kris a HC job if he doesnt get it this year. Either way we’ll have almost a all new coaching staff if not all new(hoping new hc keeps Buckner), it’s a fresh start n I know we all have become numb to hoping this will be the year but that’s a bucs life so have faith/hope that 2019 will be the year we turned things around n became a legit team dare I say dynasty🤷‍♂️ One can dream 😁

  24. Phillip Says:

Don’t think you know what age most of those qb’s are to say they’ll retire in a couple years…. Brees, Brady, Rivers, and Ben would be the only ones in the first group that would retire within 3 years Alex Smith in the second group because of injury and not age

That’s 5 of the 19 or so i listed… So Dak regressed but Winston didn’t? Might want to stop the double standards

  25. Stanglassman Says:

5 game lay-off and didn’t get first team reps in camp and his Qb rating was his 2nd best in career, only 2 pts lower than last year. He had one bad game a few so so games and played very good to excellent in the rest. Not that I expect any of you fools to admit you were wrong but I for one can’t wait to see him with a decent OL, Defense and a run game.

You named the guys I was referring to regarding retirement but you may add Matt Ryan to that list shortly after. I think of it like moving forward who would you rather have at QB not who was better in their best season so far.

  26. Phillip Says:

Calling people fools and you back your claims with QB rating? Lmao

Btw none of the other teams with those QB’s have as many weapons the Bucs have besides Goff. Get out with the excuses.

Also, Matt Ryan is 33, you moron.

  27. Jean Lafitte Says:

^^^^ in other words you believe for Jameis to be successful that everything around him must be perfect? So Jameis cannot win unless it’s perfect for him to do so. So it’s unfair that Jameis should be counted on if things are not perfect? You’re the only fool who doesn’t see that Jameis needs to get better.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

Stroud is a lazy fake news hack.

  29. Phillip Says:

You just said Winston has to have the perfect team basically to be a great QB as well. Nice job

  30. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    Phillip
Rodgers is on his way out as well.

  31. Phillip Says:

Smh I’ll take 5 years of the best QB currently in the NFL over a QB who may not ever be a thing

  32. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    Phillip
Well tell us your genius idea to get Pat Mahomes from KC then.

  33. Phillip Says:

What does trading for PM II have to do with anything? They said list 15-19 better QB’s than JW. I did and the excuse train is out

    Try and keep up

Oh and I posted this knowing full well it won’t happen

    Phillip Says:
    January 5th, 2019 at 1:49 pm
While the draft class is not great for QB’s if compared to next year… I wonder if Jameis has any kind of trade value atm? He would relieve $20 million off the cap that could be used on other areas of need plus whatever you can get in draft capital(2nd + conditional 4th round pick). IMO unless you really think Jameis has the tools both physically and mentally to be the franchise you cut bait now while he may have some sliver of value. Definitely not going to happen but it is something that the front office should explore.

I’d make a call to the Colts for Brissett or the 49ers for Mullins and see how cheap you can get them as a stop gap for a year(at worst) then become the backup in 2020.

Tua, Herbert, Patterson, Eason, Fromm looks a lot better than Haskins, Jones, Lock, Stidham, Grier

  34. Stanglassman Says:

Ben 36 and about to retire so like I said Matt Ryan (33) is going to retire shortly after those guys. I’m not building a team around a guy going into his 14 year, who not that great to began with. I don’t see why that’s so difficult to understand. Qb rating combines all the stats it’s the most comprehensive rating I didn’t want to cherry pick certain stats. Fool just means silly or unwise. I’d never call you a moron for defending your teams QB and stating your opinion.

    Jean-
I said DECENT OL, run game, and defense. I didn’t say perfect, great or even very good. You know like all the other Qbs you’ll think are better than Jameis. I don’t think you guy reading comprehension is very good. That means better than decent. And I should have added kicker.

  35. Mike Evans Goat Says:

U said u want 5 years of the best current Qb. That’s Mahomes. I don’t need to keep up. I’ve forgotten more than u’ll ever know.
This franchise has constantly given up on QBs too soon. 2 of which went on to win SB with other teams.
Yes the 2020 QBs class is loaded. But if Winston is soo horrible to u then it shouldn’t be a problem getting the 1st overall pick.
Winston didn’t have these accuracy issues at FSU. The first thing our JV coaching staff did when he got here was change his throwing motion. He’s has the same qb coach for his entire career (with no previous experience) and for the most part ZERO run game. Give this kid a REAL NFL coach and a decent O line and we can go far. And we won’t even get into how he NEEDS a defense. U can’t win in this day and age without a D. Ask Drew Brees. (I believe he was on your “List”)

  36. Phillip Says:

First apologies for the moron comment…

I just can’t take you seriously anymore you are being too biased. Matt Ryan just went 35/7 and you don’t think he’s great? That’s also not his best season either. Just mind boggling to me

    Agree to disagree 👍

  37. Stanglassman Says:

Ask Arron Rogers. Crap OL, run game and defense he wins 6 games. Go figure.

  38. Phillip Says:

So because PM II had 1 historic season in his lone year as a starter and haven’t seen him the playoffs yet and he’s the best in your eyes? I stopped reading after that as the rest of your comment is now irrelevant.

  39. Phillip Says:

Same O-line 2 years ago and who was the RB? Their defense was relying on Julius Peppers I believe…

  40. Stanglassman Says:

That’s a great TD to INT ratio. His 2nd best. Matt Ryan is very good. I expect Jameis to finish around P. Manning better than Farve TD to INT ratio. Neither are nearly as cauious with the ball as Ryan but still very good QBs in their day.

My only point was there are not close to 18 better Qbs to move forward with in the nfl now then Jameis not even half that.

Thank you for the civility call. We could all be better on these boards.

  41. Stanglassman Says:

Pat Hahomes is special. I wouldn’t bet against that kid.

GB won 7 games in 2017.

  42. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    Phillip
Winston has had historic first 4 seasons but ur ready to write him off tho. U are contradicting yourself. It’s ok if u hate Winston. That is your Prerogative, but your double standard is laughable.

  43. Fire Light Says:

MeJax is a starter on the worst Bucs of all time team.

  44. Fire Light Says:

The Winston Bashers are moronic individuals who bought into the fake sports news media smear campaign against Jameis.

  45. Phillip Says:

Was talking 2016 season as that is the last year they made the playoffs.. Come on Stang…

Also I play college fantasy football and had PM II on my team 2 straight years trust me you won’t find a bigger fan of his personally. But he isn’t the best without playing a playoff game yet

  46. Phillip Says:

Mike I never wrote off Jameis… I said if I were the front office that’s what I would do as they should explore every option including trading away our favorite players. We aren’t close as a team to competing imo and this team needs a COMPLETE rebuild like the Browns did.

I’d rather do a full rebuild with a QB on a rookie contract than overpay one that might not be better than 20ish in the NFL on a massive contract as well. He is likely to continue to play like he has next year(when good he’s REALLY GOOD but when he’s bad he is close to the worst starting QB in the NFL that would equate to average overall QB to me) and do you think the Bucs cut bait? I personally don’t because he’s enough of a tease that you feel like you are always thissssss close.

  47. Makie Lovie Says:

Mike Evans made Johnny Football a Heisman winner…
