Flipping Salaries For QB Pressure

Potential free agent target?

Joe is not advocating the following, only throwing this out for debate and feedback.

Joe is a big, big, big proponent of the Bucs getting heat on the quarterback. The way the NFL is going, it’s a pass-happy league where defensive backs can barely breathe on receivers without getting flagged.

So right now it seems the best defense is the defense that can get to the quarterback. Look at Kansas City. The Chiefs had a brutal defense but they could rush the passer, force quarterbacks into bad throws, turnovers and yes, sacks. It’s a big reason the Chiefs were a hair away from playing in next week’s Super Bowl.

Now Joe gets comments about not attending the Senior Bowl. There’s a couple of reasons. One is that the draft is three months away. The Super Bowl hasn’t even been held yet. Technically, the 2018 season is still being played.

Another reason Joe doesn’t go to the Senior Bowl is that free agency, which may be more popular than the draft, is not quite two months away. First thing’s first, you may say.

Kansas City has one of its best pass rushers entering free agency, Dee Ford. It’s entirely possible the Chiefs franchise Ford, who the trusted Spotrac.com projects to get a $16.5 million a year contract if he hits free agency.

The Bucs currently have the fifth-lowest available salary cap room and obviously will be looking to trim fat. But if Ford would be available, would it be a smart move to release long-time fixture, stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and his $13 million contract in a swap of sorts in order to sign Ford?

Again, Joe is not advocating this and it is entirely possible Ford will be tagged by the Chiefs. Essentially trading GMC’s salary for Ford is, well, interesting to Joe.

If that happened, then Joe will be all for the Bucs drafting this Quinnen Williams, a defensive tackle from Alabama with the No. 5 pick. Currently, if the Bucs keep GMC (and don’t sign a free agent defensive end), Joe really, really wants the Bucs to draft pass rusher Josh Allen of Kentucky.

How about releasing McCoy and signing Suh? Sounds a bit crazy…what can i say…as rowdy as my Saturday nights get these days.

  2. Lunchbox Says:

I’m also all in for getting Josh Allen. That guy could end up being another Khalil Mack. That being said, I have trouble believing he’ll be there at 5. After Allen, my next two preferences would be Q. Williams or J. Williams in that order. It’s altogether possible that all 3 will be gone by the time we pick.

  3. David Says:

I’ve always been all for McCoy but it may be time to trade him or release him. They can build the line around JPP and Vita Vea

  4. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Suh is no upgrade, that’s why they had to make the trade for Fowler. They thought they would get more out of Suh, no thanks. That’s just trading one washed up DT for another.

I just don’t think Ford is the way to go either, too much $$$ and not enough history of production. I’d rather sign a lower priced vet like Wake or Clay and draft a young guy behind him.

  5. Whatinthebuchappend Says:

I absolutely love the Kentucky kid Allen ! Just no way he’s there at 5 ! Most mocks have him going 2nd overall. So i say grab the online kid from bama & then in the second round absolutely draft RB Henderson out of Memphis..once again fix the trenches and go get a back that has good feet , great vision & speed with alot of power and shifty moves.. y’all do yourself a favor and watch game tape of Henderson and tell me what you guys think about j.williams from bama and Henderson with our first 2 pics

  6. catcard202 Says:

I don’t see the Bucs needing Ford…Or being able to afford him in FA…Not with minimal cap space & a guy like Spence drooling at the bit to play that role…But no doubt I’m all in on UK Edge-OLB J.Allen @ #5. No doubt.

  7. teacherman777 Says:

I have finally given up on GMC and his “lets have fun” philosophy.

Raheem destroyed everything Dungy and the Fab 5 built: Brooks, Sapp, Lynch, Barber, and Rice.

Do you guys think Julian Edelman and Tom Brady give a rat’s ass about having fun?

No! They are psychos that are obsessed with WINNING.

GMC and his “fun philosophy” has gotten us nothing but some of the worst defenses in the NFL for the past 8 years.

It is time to give the defense to JPP.

You think JPP is trying to have fun?

Nah man. He’s out there giving his heart and soul on every snap.

Bye Bye GMC. Go “have fun” while the fans suffer somewhere else.

  8. Not there yet Says:

Is rather not swap Geraldine just to get the guy who made the dumbest play of the playoffs basically preventing his team from reaching the super bowl lining up off sides. No need to go out and pay guys, the joes love free agency like that solves the issues. No free agent signing is going to get them to the super bowl the next couple years, draft guys and develop not overpay

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Interesting thinkpiece Joe. No way on Dee Ford at his projected salary ($16.5 mil), or anything close to that. Ford had a banner year … 16 games played & started, 13 sacks, 29 QB hits, 13 TFL, 7 forced fumbles, 55 tackles (combined). 2018 was his 5th year; he had a very nice 2016 (10 sacks, 17 QBH, 12 TFL, 1 FF, 38 tackles), BUT the other 3 years were meh (at best) AND he missed over half of 2017 (ended up in IR). He’s the exact same size as Noah Spence BTW (6’2″ & 252 lbs). And unless I’m mistaken, the Chiefs run a 3-4 defense & Ford is used primarily as a OLB. Doesn’t sound like the Bucs are going that way from what I’ve been reading (maybe more of a hybrid; ie, situational?).

Keeping a $13 mil DT who’s 31 years old & producing less each year doesn’t sound like anything Coach Arians would favor. IF GMC is here in 2019 it’ll be because he restructured his contract for less money IMO. Take him out of there & we’re left with Vea (rookie) & Allen (part-timer not an anchor). We’d be forced to replace GMC with an equivalent DT (one who plays around 75% of the defensive snaps every game & averages around 6-7 sacks, 30-35 tackles, 20 QB Hits & 8-10 TFLs a year). Some Bucs’ fans apparently don’t like ‘Mr Softie’ BUT replacing that type of production will either cost some big FA $$$ or a very high draft pick.

Your potential strategy of replacing GMC’s salary with Ford’s salary AND also using our #5 pick for a DT (Bama’s Quinnen Williams) sounds nice on the surface, BUT look at what we end up with. Two young studs (Vea & Williams) plus Allen on the DLine along with JPP & Ford as DEs … very impressive BUT at a HUGE cost in terms of present salaries for JPP & Ford AND Top-10 picks 2 years running for our DTs. We’d still have LOTS of other holes to fill but with limited salary CAP $$$ and draft picks to fill them with. We’d have dumped GMC & his salary but be right back in the crummy salary CAP position we’re in right now. Bummer.

  10. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe if we’re going to target that kid in the draft we might as well trade down into the low teens and acquire draft picks. We could then trade back up into say the 8,9th spot by using McCoy as bait and get someone like Greedy or say Josh Allen. I think someone will be desperate to get a QB and trade spots with us.

  11. NPRSageBoy Says:

I’ll believe it when I see it.

  12. Bucs Guy Says:

Unfotunately, I don’t believe Q. Williams, Bosa or Allen will be available at #5; though I’m onboard with taking any of them if they fall to Tampa.

Depending upon what the Bucs do with DSmith and GMC will determine which position we go after at #5. I think we keep one, but both.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need to retain the $13 from GMC to sign multiple players……so, spending the $16 on one player….no matter who, doesn’t make good sense to me.
I think we will likely have an opportunity to improve our Dline with our first pick….and I agree that Allen & Williams won’t be there at 5…….

I am a proponent of trading down if a good partner exists….there are several teams behind us in the top 15 that need a QB.

Hell, the Giants may trade us #6 for something just to keep other teams from trading with us.

  14. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

    Yass!

Dee Ford would be huge upgrade from big fat softie Gerald McCoy, for only $3 million more dollars than we’re paying McCoy

IMO let’s move away from fixing the D line through the draft, we did that last year and through free agency.

Let’s fix the O line, that will trickle down and fix the running game as well. Looking at the Eagles “off the street corner backs”, I think we can fix our secondary with coaching

Everything else on our team is solid talent wise

We’re a 10-6 team, and would be a 12-4 team if Jamies could connect with Desean Jackson on DEEP passes

  15. Jean Lafitte Says:

I’m afraid big shopping in free agency is not going to happen. If we let Gmac go it will be to trim money but that money will be used on our own players looking for a bigger payday. The draft has to be our bread and butter and at the end, hopefully we appeal to some quality UFA’s to sort through during camp.

  16. D-Rome Says:

The Chiefs had a brutal defense but they could rush the passer, force quarterbacks into bad throws, turnovers and yes, sacks. It’s a big reason the Chiefs were a hair away from playing in next week’s Super Bowl.

Chiefs also averaged 11 more points per game than the Bucs. Bucs weren’t terrible at scoring but you have to convince me a Jay-Miss led offense can score 35ppg for an entire season.

  17. Go Bucs 72 Says:

Whatever scenario gets soft a$$ McCottoncandy out of here is fine with me.

  18. BucEmUp 7 Says:

Mccoy has always been a really good.player on a realy bad team.and gotten a bunch of crap from moronic fans who believe one player is going to take over a team and take them to the promise land. The worst coaching imaginalble and its all his fault. Dumb…

With that said, he had a down year playing with jpp should have made things easier..Nassib helped as well and still a decline. Im sayingnit now, Vea is going to be an absoute freak in this league Mccoy is not worth his current salary. His age finally caught him. His prime years were wasted..Hopefully the cards fall his way and he can at least be on a winning teams roster. He will play fornthe pats next season

  19. Kalind Says:

Agree on Allen. Not on Williams.

If we don’t get Allen, it’s 100% sell to a team that wants Haskins ahead of the Giants at 6.

  20. Arian Nation Says:

I believe Q Williams or Ed Oliver will be available at #7.

Trade the Buc’s #5 to the Jags for their #7 and #38.

There will be a last minute mad rush for QB’s like every year.

The Bengals at #11 and the Redskins at #15 may be willing to move up as well.

Ed Oliver or Rashon Gary might be there at those picks.

  21. MMM Says:

Why is the talk always about getting rid of GMC,when between them I believe you save the same getting rid of Vinny Curry and Beau Allen.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

Grew up rooting for Paul Brown…first with the Browns and then the Bengals.

He was the first NFL coach to place a LOT of emphasis on a players brains as well as their bodies.

It’s hard for me to get excited about Dee Ford. Yeah he has talent and a banner year but he’s waaay to expensive.

Most of all for me coming from that Paul Brown school of thought I do not want someone who is so freaking brain dead that he lined up offsides and literally cost the Chiefs the spot in the SB they had wrapped up. That mistake reminded me of all the times the Bucs have done crap like that over the past few years.

I’m done with unforced penalties that cost a game…especially the most important game in a players career. When all the marbles are on the line you can’t trust Ford.

And I hate Tom Brady and the Pats and thanks to Ford I’m going to have to watch them AGAIN in the Super Bowl. That alone has me really peoed. LOL

  23. The Coroner Says:

    Joe.
    Yep.

  24. The Buc Realist Says:

I guess it is better for some to finally “get it” years too late, then to not get it at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Building around the wrong players is one of the main reasons that this franchise has been unable to rise from bottom!!!!!!! But hey, they are fan favorites!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 2019 season will reveal to the sheep answers that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. StoutGospel Says:

Dee Ford will likely be tagged by KC, especially since his production was only one year really, and local beat reporters said KC is going to cut Justin Houston loose this offseason.

Josh Allen likely gone by #5, and this guy is ALL ABOUT Quinnen Williams, especially if NYJ foolishly pass on him at #3.

GMC is gone, thankfully, deal with it folks.

I agree with @ Arian Nation…that given the QB fiasco that went down in WAS this year, Dan Snyder is the type of egomaniac to green-light Bruce Allen to trade up from #15 for Kyler Murray to put some pizazz back in WAS. Not enough GM’s in draft circles are thinking about that. Our pick at #5 ahead of NYG will be HIGHLY coveted by Dolphins, Jaguars, Redskins.

Maybe Montez Sweat further down in the middle of the first round while picking up another 2 quality picks could be another good way to go. Sweat had a real good Senior Bowl week, reviews from coaches.

  26. Smashsquatch Says:

Chiefs were not a hair away from the Super Bowl due to their pass rush; furthermore, Dee Ford cost them a trip to the SB thanks to his inability to line up on sides. This team doesn’t need bank breaking cap moves, but rather a complete culture change, which is already happening thanks to the staff overhaul. Moving on from aging high salaried players will afford options, which gives the new regime flexibility. Can’t wait to see their strategy unfold in FA and the draft.

  27. Dapostman Says:

    Realist,

give up the “real” fans and state what they already know.

  28. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Dee Fords’ play was undisciplined at the wrong time and helped his team lose… yup, he’ll fit right in.

  29. proudbucsfan Says:

Buc’s -16.5 mill under the cap for 2019, if we let GMC go his whole 2019 12 mill salary falls back under the cap. Then if we let Djax go all of his 10 mill salary falls back under the cap. if we release Vinny Curry before 3-17-19 we will get 8 mill back under the cap, if we cut Beau Allen before 6-1-19 it will only cost us 1.5 mill. so that is a potential of 45 mill under the cap. and that is real, look it up. we could do alot from getting rid of those 3 player’s.

  30. proudbucsfan Says:

    those 4 player’s my bad,

  31. Anonymous Says:
