Chucky’s College Tackle Of Choice

January 26th, 2019

Yes, the Bucs sure could use a starting tackle or a guard in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The consensus is it’s a good available crop. But who to select?

Chucky has been coaching at the Senior Bowl this week and during an interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio, the Bucs’ Super Bowl coach mentioned many players but seemed most jazzed about a guy pegged as a right tackle or a guard.

“This right tackle Risner out of Kansas State, he’s my kind of guy,” Chucky said with authority.

The Buffalo News did a nice feature on Risner and noted Chucky’s love and Risner’s excellent attitude and pedigree.

Risner is the son of a coach and an intense competitor. He’s not shy about it..

“I want to bury guys in the dirt on every single play,” Risner said. “I hope scouts watch my tape and say, ‘What was up Dalton Risner’s butt during that game?’ ”

Risner got under the skin of Boston College defensive end Zach Allen in Thursday’s practice, prompting Allen to take a wild punch at him, which fortunately missed (because Risner had his helmet on).

Then late in the practice, Raiders coach Jon Gruden gathered the North team in a circle at midfield and called out Risner to go one on one, first against Arizona State’s Renell Wren and then against Allen. Risner held them both off, with teammates whooping, and he was so excited he chest-bumped Gruden.

Risner, 308 pounds and just under 6-5, has said in multiple interviews that some teams seem him as a guard versus a right tackle. He played his first season at Kansas State at center and the final three year at right tackle, which gives him rare experience.

Likely a second-round draft pick, Risner could be sitting there for the Bucs. For years, general manager Jason Licht has tried to get his O-line nastier via free agency, see J.R. Sweezy and Ryan Jensen. Perhaps drafting that attitude would be a better play.

Risner checks the good-guy box in a big way. You can read here how the three-year captain at Kansas State has long been a volunteer working with disabled kids.

There are some good ones…Cody Ford T/G….after our #5 but before our 2nd round….hopefully they’ll be a last minute rush to top of the draft and the Bucs can trade down and build picks

  2. Miller5252 Says:

Bucs need a lot of work on the lines this year. Jensen and Marpet are good, I really like the way Jensen plays. Keep Vita, Carl, and JPP, the rest can go and save the money for some free agents.

  3. Rod Munch Says:

Considering Gruden’s incredibly poor drafting history, I’ll take a hard pass.

  4. Bird Says:

Stay away from him if Gruden likes

Remember dexter Jackson and every other terrible pick
Mike mayock needs to get some balls and tell Gruden this is my job

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

Chucky has never spoken about a player he didn’t like….he gets old fawning over players….

  6. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

How about we wait for our new coaches to evaluate our team and give their opinion on our defense and offense before we start shootings off on who we should cut, sign, and draft??

Yah know, it’s that thing called common sense

  7. Jean Lafitte Says:

This will be a deep draft for lineman so unless we can get a no-miss future pro bowler with our top pick we should try to trade down and collect picks. We need quantity. We need too many players and free agency has been our achilles heel, and the biggest reason why we never get compensatory picks in the first place.

  8. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

And Joe before you get your panties in a bunch I agree with you we need to draft a good O lineman

  9. Bird Says:

    Altered

I think a team will want the top qb at 5 to jump Giants who need qb bad. Or is it jags. Anyway. We can move back just a few spots and get extra picks

I’m thinking devin white from LSU. Patrick Willis and Ray Lewis comparisons should mean something.

Especially when Kwon and Beckwith are unknowns. 3-4 linebacker (mike) is huge. Maybe most important on field.

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

While I largely agree with Rod’s assessment of Gruden’s drafting ability even the blind squirrel gets the acorn occasionally.

This guy certainly seems like the real deal. A couple more players like this…late first rounders and second rounders may be the answer which screams…trade down. Since we have a roughly 50-50 chance of real success with that #5.

#5 means to me that success is defined by a “generational” talent.

Can’t risk a #5 on him but if we had multiple choices generated by a trade down might get him late in the first high in the second. Love his size and meanness. I love players that inspire defenders to swing on them!

  11. TOM Says:

Jonah Williams is still my 1st choice but I do like Risner a lot to. As far as guards I like Lindstrum from BC & Powers Oklahoma. There are a lot of DL that also impressed.

  12. macabee Says:

The top OTs Jonah Williams/Bama, Greg Little/Ole Miss, Jawaan Taylor/UF, and Cody Ford/Oklahoma didn’t even play. Lots of good 2nd and 3rd round talent though. OGs Deiter, Lindstrom, Benzschawel are all good!

  13. JimmyJack Says:

Good eye Joe & I’m liking your thinking with our draft choices.

Game changing defender @#5 and then address the OL Round 2.

Thinking we get another front man in Round 3-4. LB or DL depending who we take at #5.

Late rounds get me a TE a CB and maybe a WR if they see something special sitting there.

  14. JimmyJack Says:

I might not trust Gruden on a lot of evaluations but I will make a exception for OL. If he’s talking I’m listening.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

St Pete exactly……#5 means generational talent…….This is exactly why you DONOT trade it away.

You can throw all then draft percents out the window. That’s becaus the percent of acuiring a generational player in his 1st season is close to 1%. Trading that away is mindless.

  16. Buc believer Says:

Who gives a phuck about Gruden or anything this ego maniac thinks or says??? This is a Buc site nor a Raider site.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Moving down from #5 to collect an extra choice is a nice thought, but it’s really not a strategy. It has to be worthwhile & there’s no guarantee you can find a partner to make it worthwhile. JimmyJack is spot on … “#5 means generational talent”. Unless another team makes you a deal you simply can’t refuse (where you come out WAY AHEAD by trading down) I can’t see trading it away just for the sake of gathering another pick.

We might find ourselves in the position of being ‘on the clock’ but we’ve rated the BPAs who best meet our NEEDS a lot further down the food chain (i.e., having to use a #5 pick on a #10 talent let’s say). Seems like you’re giving up ‘points’ BUT you still fill a primary NEED with the BPA. Devin White from LSU may be a good example. He’s listed as a Rnd 1 prospect, but maybe we have him ranked at #10 in that round. Should we use our #5 pick to draft him? Personally I’d say Yes, IF he was our highest ranked player in a position of NEED.

Or we could keep accumulating WRs like we’ve done in the past if they’re higher ranked but not a position of NEED. Hmmm, how’s that worked out for us?

  18. Buccaneerscotty Says:

I hope we get a tackle at 5 . So he can play on a rookie deal for 5 yrs

  19. Brett Says:

Bill Polian said during the draft that Donovan Smith would eventually be a guard. It sucks that the Bucs drafted him high, he’s going to go somewhere else, and will probably have a long career once he moves to his correct position. Sorta like Mark Barron who was our first round pick and will be starting in the Super Bowl.

  20. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Plus I don’t are for the ones we have

  21. JimmyJack Says:

Trading away a top five pick minght make sense if your still getting a generational player……Like the Colts did last year by passing on Barkley and still getting Nelson.

If you notice the only reason we got a trade offer last year was because Denver was not dumb enough to pass up on Chubb.

The only trade offer I like is with New York because they then draft a QB and we go next. We would then still draft the same player.

This seems highly unlikely though. If you of these teams sees a franchise QB they will do whatever it takes to get a Top 3 to get him.

  22. JimmyJack Says:

2 first round choice plus a second is defientaly worth it for a franchise QB. Can’t believe both the Jets and 49ers turn that down.

  23. stpetebucsfan Says:

Sorry guys I’m just from the Bobby Beathard school of GM thought.

Over the course of his 38 years in the NFL, his teams competed in seven Super Bowls (winning four times).

With the Redskins, Beathard built a team that won two super bowls, by trading back in the draft and signing key free agents. Beathard is credited as being the first general manager to aggressively trade back in drafts in order to secure more picks, something that’s become common-place in the league.

My father was a bookie and impressed odds in my brain. If you can trade a 60-40 shot for several 50-50’s it just makes sense at least according to Beathard who is in the HOF. He must have known something or do we suppose he was just lucky over those 38 years?

I would change if there is a can’t miss QB…outside of that…perhaps a Saquan Barkley…but this draft is deep but not awesome at the top.

I certainly take D.R.’s point about the need to find a partner but I suspect there will be some suitors. It’ll be up to Licht to get the best deal possible and then not WASTE the second rounders.
I hope BA’s finger prints will be all over this draft.

  24. Bird Says:

    Defense.

I hear yah. I don’t think we get top 5 dline. Is Olivier top 5. Not sure.

And I don’t think Oline is the 5 pick. Again I may be wrong but get that sure thing a few picks back. Not that there is one.

  25. AfrikaThaRapper Says:

Preach my brother @Buc believer. Go Bucs.

  26. Jean Lafitte Says:

I hope we get a lot of interested quality UFA signings. There will be some good ones that don’t even get drafted. They are the ones who can fill in the depth charts. This team seems to have a history lately on season ending injuries to starters so we need depth. This is where I hope with BA’s experience is his evaluations on rookies.

  27. Defense Rules Says:

@TOM … “Jonah Williams is still my 1st choice but I do like Risner a lot to.” I’m a huge Bama fan Tom, but I still don’t get why folks see Jonah Williams as a LT. He’s tall enough, but only weighs 297 lbs. Where’s the beef? Needs a lot more meat on his bones to be playing LT in the NFL. All the other top LT prospects go in the 330 lb range & up.

@Brett … “Bill Polian said during the draft that Donovan Smith would eventually be a guard.” Not sure that he’s a Guard (versus a RT), but thus far Donovan hasn’t performed anything like a franchise LT that’s for sure. He may well be an excellent Guard, but Koetter never tried him there that I remember. Wish he had. I’d personally like to franchise tag him for a year & try him at LG (and move Ali back to RG). Draft a LT with our #5 & sign a RT free agent (or maybe keep Dotson & also see what Cappa can do there if he beefs up a little).

Here’s the trade value chart for draft picks: https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart.asp?RequestTeam=TB
Might be willing to trade down with Jax and get another 3rd rounder. They say you can get more for your pick if someone is trading up for a QB. I see a few of the teams in front of us trading down if the bidding is high for a QB.

  29. AlteredEgo Says:

One of my concern with Jonah Williams is that he was surrounded by great talent…I realize he is an excellent player just not sure he’s the 5th best player in the draft

Wow the joes are actually endorsing a guy Gruden likes in the draft. I couldn’t help laughing out loud considering how he drafted in Tampa but ok hey thanks for the content and the laughter

  32. Todd Says:

Any dead weight on our roster we can trade for a round two?

    Fake left, go right?

“I love Jackson. I’m working on recruiting him!”

    That’s my fantasy anyway.

  33. geno711 Says:

I call out stpetebucsfan for what Rod Munch would call fake news.

Beathard did not trade back in the late 70’s and 80’s for more picks. I did not check years after 82 but I saw no effective trade backs from Beathard from 78 to 82.

In fact if you look at those years, the hall of famers are most likely to be in the top 5-7 picks. If not HOF guys than very likely to be pro bowl guys.

Do not trade out of that pick there are 5 defensive guys that would help the bucs and be pro bowl caliber.
