What 99 Percent Of Fans Don’t Care About

Yes, it’s very nice and fun that Joe was able to break news on Friday at 3 p.m. that the plan at One Buc Palace was to announce the team’s 12th head coach no later than today — and that Bruce Arians was expected to be the guy.
But Joe is not strutting around JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters because Joe is keenly aware that 99 percent of fans don’t give a flying crap about which media outlet broke the exciting news.
The 1 percent who do care are extremely loud, passionate fans, deep lovers of the team. But ultimately in the modern era of media, who got the news and where it was broken is about as worthless as the newspaper page it will appear on the next morning.
Loyalty to media outlets is nearly extinct. Fans want information, insight, honesty and entertainment. That’s what Joe seeks as a fan, and that’s why Joe launched this website in 2008.
Fans care little to nothing about the ego-maniacal nonsense that goes on among media types, though it can make for great Twittertainment.
Joe, however, has always been fascinated by the ego that dominates mainstream media. Most outlets care more about their own image than they care about serving the fans.
That played out again in various media responses to Joe’s Friday report. The pervasive attitude was “there’s no way JoeBucsFan’s source is better than mine, and there’s no way mine would ever lie to me.” It felt like naive teen girls (mean girls?) gossiping at their high school cafeteria table.
Joe had to laugh at the local sports radio chatter that wouldn’t reference Joe’s report but was happy to refer to it as a rumor and then do segments talking about it without saying where it was from. Meanwhile, the hosts know JoeBucsFan.com has been covering the Bucs for 11 years and has no track record of making things up.
Even more fun was the guys in the local media game reaching out to JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman directly cautioning him not to affiliate himself with such a nonsense report. Of course, Kaufman was appalled and told them they were way off base on all fronts.
If you’ve made it to the end of this post, then you’re probably among the 1 percent who care about behind-the-scenes media BS that was on display since Friday afternoon. Joe’s happy for you. It’s never going to go away.

Joe you guys do a great job! everything with all the podcasts and all the avenues for justin and bobby fenton. Actual true buc fans who cheer and criticize but look beyond the box score. massive bucs fan and you guys are a true credit and actual knowledgeable fans about football which i appreciate when i listen. It would be cool if you guys had an app and a way to actually communicate with you, lee, steve, and ira. would make for some entertaining things and fans like myself would have good questions and comments. also i usually read the website from my phone, if there was ever an app or someway to make articles to read easier that would be great. anyways you guys mentioned you want feedback so there it is but keep doing what you are doing! you have buc fans from all over the world, not just tampa!

I’m just one fan but here is what determines my viewership.
I read the paper in the morning just for the opinions of the columnists. But of course the paper is always late with actual breaking news. It’s one of the reasons they are disappearing.
And then I spend the rest of the day on and off coming to JBF precisely because you do break stories and I trust your journalism and judgement.
So it’s JBF for current up to date Bucs coverage and the paper to get some reaction to that news.

There’s been at least a weeks’ worth of speculation and dozens of articles about Bucs hiring BA. Though I received a “breaking news” e-blast of the hiring from a competitor’s website earlier, it’s far from breaking news, it’s only confirmation os what most everyone expected to happen.
Time after time, until Joe says it, it’s speculation only. That’s why JBF’s website is ALWAYS the first place I go to read about anything to do with the Bucs.

All I can say is that I strictly remember Joe being first to report that there was an expected announcement of Head Coach early this week, specifically Tuesday. Obviously with Arians being the announcement. It was rather impressive. I thought to myself what a bold prediction. I was excited because I wanted Arians and I also trusted it without hesitation. The “esteemed” sports reporters in this town have every reason to cry. They have once again proven to their bosses that pay the freight, that they are second rate. I love this site, read it every day. Since you decided to write this, I do have a couple of quick questions:
With the connections you have made and the insight it has granted you, what percentage of what you know/hear are you not reporting to keep your insider position? It really doesn’t work like that. This isn’t politics. That said, JoeBucsFan is not an unsourced rumor website. Never has been since Day 1. If we went the rumor route, we could run quite a weekly column. If things are learned in confidence, they stay that way and simply enhance Joe’s knowledge base. –Joe You have referenced many stories you cannot share, isn’t that the best kind of news? How do you decide to write something that you know your contacts are going to frown upon but keep other things a secret for their (and ultimately, your benefit)? What a tightrope you walk. What you must have withheld from us to end up breaking this story. Again, it really doesn’t work that way. You’ve seen too many TV shows. –Joe
