“Poised To Pounce”

December 23rd, 2018

Other than still being employed by Carolina, Joe thinks Ron Rivera would check all the boxes as Team Glazer searches for its next head coach.

A nugget from ProFootballTalk.com today suggests Team Glazer is thinking the same thing.

Rivera, 70-55-1, as Panthers head coach, is riding a six-game losing streak and it appears his defense will finish out of the top-10 in the NFL for only the third time in his eight seasons with Carolina.

There’s been a lot of speculation about his future with the Panthers now that they have a new owner, David Tepper.

An NFL.com story this morning said Rivera is safe, but super-insider Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com and NBC was less certain and suggested Team Glazer is hungrily waiting in the wings if Tepper moves on.

Another big factor will be whether Tepper can upgrade. Rivera quietly has become one of the best coaches in the league. Before giving up on a guy who is closing in on a decade of experience and who has taken the team to a Super Bowl, Tepper had better be sure he’ll end up with someone better — especially since many believe the Buccaneers are poised to pounce on Rivera, if he becomes available.

This excites Joe. Rivera is a proven coach whose teams are physical, and he’s shown a flexibility in his approach that many coaches don’t.

Another consideration: if Rivera is replaced, will that mean his staff is too?

Who is the Panthers offensive coordinator again…?

  2. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Team President: Tony Dungy
    GM Jason Licht
    HC Mike McCarthy
    OC Todd Monken
    DC Rod Marinelli

  3. TheNorm Says:

Currently a 6 game losing streak. Never won back to back division titles with way better teams than the Bucs have had.
    Is he really that good?
Also not the first time he’s been on the hot seat.

Idk. Who cares anyway. The Bucs will screw it up somehow someway.

  4. Aceofaerospace Says:

Better the Dirk, by a lot, but why his current losing streak? They lost to the Bucs for goodness sakes.

  5. Anonymous Says:

I wonder how dirk would do with a talent laden roster?

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

THis article is a perfect example of why you don’t fire a good football coach…all the other factors need to be considered…in our case our player have not quit. I’ve explained myself thoughts on keeping Koetter next year.

  7. Kevin Says:

Meh, let’s stop with NFC South retreads for a while.

  8. Ndog Says:

I would only take Riveria IF he brought Norv Turner with him.

  9. AlteredEgo Says:

    LOL…watch Dirks “coaching” with Carolina’s roster…and Rivera’s with ours…after a hypothetical coach swap

  10. ben Says:

Licht needs to be gone asap!

  11. Dewey Selmon Says:

Norv Turner is nothing but a gimmick offense. Once teams knew not to over pursue and keep gap integrity the Panthers offense has stalled.

  12. StoutGospel Says:

@TheNorm …makes some valid points above ^^^^. It is might concerning that Rivera with all his tenure in Carolina couldn’t pull any strings whatsoever to stop the bleeding of a massive 6 game losing streak, going from the #2 seed at 6-2 then, to OUT of the playoffs (essentially) now. Also, it is the second time, in I believe the past 3 years, that he’s been on the hot seat. And, other than a great coincidental draft choice in Kawaan Short, and separately an obvious great draft choice in Kuechly, their defense is basically trash against the pass over the last 4-5 years, and middling against the run over that time as well. DEFENSE…is supposedly where he came from, his forte’ allegedly. Nope.

JOHN Harbaugh….doesn’t have such ineptitude or murky mediocre success. JOHN Harbaugh brings an unwavering mentality and strength conditioning program to ALWAYS lead the defense to a willful, hostile force of imposition against the opposing offense week in and week out. THAT…is what the Bucs need. He also has a quiet permeating cohesive strength about him which would bleed into every fabric of the next long chapter of the Bucs internal player/coaching infrastructure.

Team Glazer….just go GET ….JOHN Harbaugh. Pony up.

  13. JIMMY T Says:

    Hey Bonzai
Nice pick for DC, unfortunately he WILL NOT LEAVE DALLAS! Your take is the same as me saying Rivera as HC & JOSH MCDANIEL AS OC! That will NEVER HAPPEN!! How about just saying Bruce Arians as HC & we trust that he will pick a good staff!!

  14. JIMMY T Says:

Or WHOEVER IS THE HC they will put a great staff together! Let’s focus on REALITY! Just say who u want as the HEAD COACH

  15. Knoxville Bucs Fan Says:

Hell no He may be Riverboat Ron now, and he got that name because he had to become a risk taker or gambler to keep his job as head coach. Up underneath the nick name, that Latino smile is Lovie MF’N SMITH. Could see a repeat with the buddy system, Riverboat Ronnie May hire his old boss to be DC. Now that would be some $hit right there lol. Again. HELL NO

  16. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Lol at u guys coaching/GM Christmas wish list

  17. Kobe Faker Says:

“Ron Rivera would be perfect for the Tampa bay Bucs

2 time coach of the year in the past 5 years

    Defensive wizard

The first you do as a team is win the division

Ron knows the division inside out

Cam is done and you cant win a injured QB

Ron knows how to build a ciaching staff and many under him recieved head coaching jobs

*Kobe Faker endorsed the hiring of Ron Rivera as Tampas HC”

    Kobe Faker

  18. Couch Fan Says:

We are about to get rid of a former division rivals coach, and you think hiring another one is a good idea? LMAO. All these same things were said about Dirk & Smitty. Please stop. We dont want anybody elses garbage. He wasnt good enough for the panties, he shouldnt be good enough for us.

  19. Bucnjim Says:

There comes a time in a coaches career where the game starts to pass them by. They lose some passion and it gets harder for the creativity needed to keep up. This could be a real possibility in Rivera’s case.

  20. BucBargainBin Says:

    Vic Fangio or Eric Bienemy

  21. 1Gr8Buc Says:

He is not going anywhere. No need to even thinl about the possibility of him being hired. On to the next……

  22. BucTown Says:

All depends on whether or not Tepper’s a moron. If he is, Rivera will be available. Of course, for Rivera to consider Tampa his best option. he might need to be a moron too.

  23. Bucfan1988 Says:

Reports out this morning on NFL.COM

    1) Panthers expected to keep Riverboat Ron
    2) Dirk Koetter may be back next year depending on how Bucs look in final 2 games…

When it comes to #2, I can say there is Ohhh Emmmm Geeeee 🤦🏻‍♂️…

  24. LakeLand Says:

    Speculation, speculation

    It’s all a guessing game

But this happens when your team is eliminated from the playoffs

    And their season is over

  25. Kobe Faker Says:

“Team Glazers know the Bucs are not a attractive job for Head Coach

The top 10 head coach candidates does not want Tampas HC position

Kobe agrees Rivera will be back at Carolina HC

Only possible path to bring a legitimate competent qualified leader is if he gets the ability to overhaul the whole organization

Tear it all down and bring in Mike Shanahan to run the whole show”

    Kobe Faker

  26. Bob in Valrico Says:

    K noxville,
IMO you are way off on this one. When he was in Chicago, Lovie chose to fire
Rivera. Look it up ,you will see some references to Lovie stabbing Rivera in the
    back.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

Once again bucfan is clueless… even if glazers do pounce why would any of you think river boat ron would consider career suicide by accepting a job with glazer clowns… seems short sighted to me, you get paid well for 3 years then start the job search over with your resume scared for life. Why not just accept a job where you actually have a chance to be successful. Having the Tampon Bay bucs on your resume is worse than job searching with multiple felonies.

  28. tmaxcon Says:

If koetter is back than you know damn well everyone laughed in Glazer boys faces… everyone wants a chance but everyone with half a brain knows working for glazers is equivalent to surrendering hope and any chance at success. Similar to a art history degree or any UF degree…

  29. Big Country Says:

All I can say is “HELL NO “! We brought in ex-Falcons coaches and we suck! I would rather hire Norv Turner as head coach. Until this year the Chargers haven’t come close to the success they had when Norv Turner was their head coach. If Todd Bowls is let go I would pounce on him for DC but if not I wouldn’t be against trying to keep our D coaches in place. They are playing way better now.

  30. Mikey Says:

Rivera was a big part of why Lovie did well in Chicago, too.

  31. Tbbucs3 Says:

Bonzai, if you want Jason Licht to stay why wouldn’t we just rehire Lovie Smith And go back to 2014. Jason Licht has got to go!

  32. Not there yet Says:

Anyone but Koetter we would rather have a coach with balls

  33. TOM Says:

Before talking about hiring a HC, the Glazers need to fire Licht. If I had my druthers I would rather keep Koetter & his coaching staff (minus Warhop) & get rid of Licht. Of coarse the best scenerio would be for the Glazers to sell team. Wow! talk about cleaning house.

  34. OneBucPerson Says:

I heard a report that Tepper is leaning towards keeping Rivera, I sure hope it’s not true. All things hoping to Panthers lose the next 2 games and finish on an 8 game losing streak, at that point I would hope Tepper will feel like his hands are tied.

  35. Troy Says:

If Rivera gets fired, he’d be very motivated.

Rivera was a big part of why Lovie did well in Chicago, too.

Lovie inherited a top 5 defense and proceeded to waste it similar to the way dungy the clown wasted sam whyche’s defense.

  37. Buccfan37 Says:

Glazes need to make some moves before Buc home crowds shrink to USF home crowds.

  38. BeeBucs Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Team President: Tony Dungy
    GM Jason Licht
    HC Mike McCarthy
    OC Todd Monken
    DC Rod Marinelli

I like this……. I would just sub out McCarthy for Kris Richards!

  39. BucEmUp Says:

Bruce Arians….MAKE HIT HAPPEN!!!!! He’s only retired until he changes his mind.

    GO CHANGE HIS MIND!!!!

  40. Knoxville Bucs Fan Says:

@ Bob in Valrico Point was he got his nickname because he was conservative just like Lovie. Carolina was rumored to be on the brink of firing Him and he did a about face and thus the nickname Riverboat Ron came about. I’ll look it up but if my memory is correct he went from DC of the bears to HC of the Panthers. He was DC in the super bowl for the Bears anyways I’m about to watch the Bucs kick the cowboys ass…I’ll research it later if I think about it

  41. Knoxville Bucs Fan Says:

@ Bob in Valrico Ok your right, he had a stop with the chargers between being let go by the bears and becoming HC of the panthers. Merry Christmas
