Patience Is For Losers?

December 18th, 2018

“Jason, pay attention.”

The Bears went 5-11 last year and lost a lot of one-score games with their then top-10 defense, rookie quarterback and a veteran head coach.

Chicago ownership shook its head, pulled the plug, hired a new head coach, made a couple of big deals and was rewarded with a division title this year.

As Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com noted, Chicago clinching the NFC North crown made it 15 out of the last 16 years that a last-place team has had a complete one-year turnaround to win its division.

That glorious stat is part of what makes the NFL great. Nearly every team has legitimate hope when the season kicks off (unless Josh McCown is your quarterback).

So here sit the Bucs today at 5-9, tied with the Falcons and a game behind the Panthers, which have lost six consecutive games.

Where do they really stand in the division led by a Saints team the Bucs match-up well against, a team that has had many ups and downs over the years? It’s easy to forget the Saints were 7-9 for three consecutive seasons (2014-2016).

Joe’s feeling optimism this morning.

Team Glazer, just pick the right head coach who has a plant to hire a strong staff.

Then whoever is calling the shots can retool the offensive line and draft a true immediate-impact defensive player and running back. It could be nearly that easy to have the Bucs playing meaningful games next season.

  16. D-Rome Says:

Joe, I don’t understand why in the way you write you are not nearly as critical of Jason Licht as you are of Dirk Koetter. Perhaps I’ve missed the articles, but I see a theme where you believe the head coach needs replacing but you are not as vocal about Jason Licht. Heck, the one article on “What Could Have Been” doesn’t even mention Jason Licht by name! Perhaps we simply have a difference of opinion of the talent level on this team. I don’t think it’s good enough at all. You can start with the offense and the fact that after three years Jason Licht has failed to improve on the offensive line and the running back position. The 2016 draft is a well documented bust. The 2017 draft had a great first round pick but as you pointed out there were other players that could have helped this team over Justin Evans. The 2018 draft is full of players that are, quite frankly, not helping the team win. On top of that, it looks like Ronald Jones was a bad pick. He hasn’t flashed once this year. Let’s not forget the overwhelming majority of free agent signings were bad deals.

An organization only needs two (no more than three) years to turn it around. Jason Licht has had five years and so far his record is worse than Mark Dominick. He’s had enough time. I understand the need for patience but look at the Jaguars. They are a perfect example of what happens to teams when they are too patient, so in a sense you’re right. Patience is for losers.

  17. JimmyJack Says:

Richard don’t have enough pedigree. Maybe could be a good HC but we need a HC who can also assemble a entire staff.

Dirk is on his way out partly because his staff was no good. We must avoid going through that again at all costs. Gotta pass on this Richard guy.

  18. Eric Says:

its a weird league. Panthers totally collapsed. Rams look very beatable. Saints have cooled off.

We could jump right in the mix with a few key moves IMO.

I haven’t totally given up on JW. I no longer buy into the “HOF” manure but he can easily be an average NFL QB and I think he still has upside and could be a better than average QB if not the all time great we were promised. If JW turns out to be just above average we are on our way.

Like everyone I’d like another OL…otherwise it’s D…and more D especially the back seven. Other than LVD…let’s hope he plays forever like London Fletcher…he certainly hasn’t slowed down this season…who are our LB’s. I hate to give up on Kwon but that was a heinous injury. Our DB’s are pretty much a jumble right now.

So better than average targets for JW…JW playing at above average….an average running game with Barber and improved OL…our offense would be fine.

Our D still has plenty of question marks but if the end of this year and the emergence of players like Nassib and Vea to go with the vets JPP and GMC…plus our class of FA’s…for once I’m not panicked by our DL or prospects of having a strong pass rush. A really strong pass rush changes everything!!!

  29. Buc believer Says:

@Drome… I have called Joe out for that very thing numerous times and so has other posters. The only thing I can figure for why Joe has his nose so far up Licht arse is he doesn’t want to lose his press credentials at one Buc.
This is such a funny take, and one that’s too common. First, Joe isn’t losing his press credentials for blasting the GM. Second, Joe wouldn’t care if that actually happened. This site was built without them and, frankly, the site would be more entertaining and engaging if Joe didn’t spend so much time covering the team in a traditional manner. Third, Licht wouldn’t make that call, which isn’t going to happen anyway. Joe will turn the tables for the purposes of discussion, you think the Bucs want to piss off Joe, who generates the 20 million verifiable page views a year on this website? Bucs management is much wiser than that. Anyway, Joe has written much about Licht and the GM position. Licht has had highs and lows. He doesn’t coach or tackle. Joe can’t give Licht better than a C grade, but Joe also doesn’t think Licht is awful at his job. Joe just doesn’t have a lot of passion right now about Licht’s status, hence the Licht articles you want aren’t coming. –Joe

  31. ed Says:

Draft athletic strong willed highly competitive major programs’ successful players that are proven winners quit trying to find diamonds in the rough enough with the Noel Spences the Ronald Joneses the Roberto Aguayo‘s the Donovan smiths the Justin Evans’ the Vernon Hargraves. All players that at the collegiate level did not show the athleticism to dominate versus big-name competition. Licht has been a gambler who thinks he knows what he’s doing but more than often he’s doubling down with a busted hand

  32. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

As Licht’s Out closes in on the Five Year Futility/Folly ( 35% winning/losing %) set by DirtStar Dominik…here’s hoping the Bros. Glazer ( or Darcie ) have the “stones” to give him the axe. I get the sense they are scared of him.

  33. Lord Cornelius Says:

Licht needs to go. Not good enough dude. Better than Dominic. Much better. But that’s still barely maybe average at best. And there has never been a clear vision philosophically with the guy whatsoever.

  34. D-Rome Says:

    LakeLand,

I’ve said it before that every team in the NFL has “talent”. Anyone on an NFL roster is talented. One of the keys to improving a team is brining in players that mesh well together on the field. We can sign the best NT in the NFL but it doesn’t mean anything if the scheme the coaches are using doesn’t play to his strengths. Yeah, he’s super talented….best NT in the world but it doesn’t mean anything if he’s for to play in a 4-3 defense. The old adage of “coach them up” doesn’t really apply.

Actually, this happened to Warren Sapp. His first year in Oakland was terrible because it was a 3-4 defense and he was playing defensive end. It didn’t fit his skill sets. No one would question whether or not he was talented.

  35. Season Is Over Says:

It has only been a decade. Plenty of time left.

  36. D-Rome Says:

The only thing I can figure for why Joe has his nose so far up Licht arse is he doesn’t want to lose his press credentials at one Buc.

That would never happen. If it did, every member of the Tampa Bay media would (or should) protest the team. Dirk Koetter seemingly can’t stand Tom Jones, but his press credentials have not been revoked.

As far as McVay he came from the greatest coaching tree the league has to offer. That’s a decent advantage. The other two you mentioned I don’t know enough about to comment. Not even sure if them guys had to build a entire staff like we need here.

    813bucboi Says
    “KRIS RICHARD!!!!!

and some folks say no coordinators…”

First off…’Passing Game Coordinator’ is a fake title. He’s not the offense, defense or special team coordinator.

    Second off…

Of 11 Buccaneers Head Coaches in team history, 7 were former coordinators.

Only 2 of those 7 had winning records…and Jon Gruden only just barely had one (2 games over .500).

Dirk Koetter – Former Offensive Coordinator (Falcons)
Lovie Smith – Former Defensive Coordinator (Rams) 8-24
Greg Schiano – Former Defensive Coordinator (Miami) 11-21
Raheem Morris – Former Defensive Coordinator (Bucs) 17-31
Richard Williamson – Former Offensive Coordinator (Ark) 4-15
Ray Perkins – Former Offensive Coordinator (Chargers) 19-41

Jon Gruden – Former Offensive Coordinator (PHI) * 57-55
    Tony Dungy – Former Defensive Coordinator (Min/Pit) * 54-42

Getting a former coordinator is a roll of the dice that rarely pays off for the Buccaneers.

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So that means there is a 75% chance that a former coordinator will not succeed in Tampa.

I tend to agree Demon. Would “probably” be a dumb move. I want to see what Winston can do with real coaching, a real game plan, real halftime adjustments, a defense that can be depended on to do their part. That being said, I’m not writing the check and I won’t lose any sleep if thebucs move on. But, they damn sure better have a backup plan. I don’t see it if they do.

What was rah morris , steve wilkes, wisenhunt, norv, dirk, belicheck, and josh mcdaniels before hc… a great cordinator that got fired. I see the commish yelling for Richards, but he also said keeping Mike Smith after year 1 here was the best offseason happening for the bucs.

  52. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Jason Licht is a horrible GM and basically ranks 32nd in terms of gms and personnel ppl in this league and dont give me that bs there needs to be someone in place to hire the next HC or the GM….there are plenty of former successful personnel guys working on sports shows or semi retired that will help out. Im sure bill polian would help lead the search….jason licht despite the support many in the media have given him has destroyed this franchise

  53. Eric Says:

try the magic eight ball approach.

  54. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

That from a guy who says you are racist if you think jameis is a lousy QB and an alleged serial groper……guy who told everyone there is a new group in tampa the stickcarrers…and then dont support the coach who gave you the name

  55. Rod Munch Says:

The defense not looking like a complete abortion is good news, then again they looks dramatically better, like one of the best in the league, at the end of 2016, and where did that get them?

    On offense they’re fine.

On special teams they’re still an abortion.

So there you go, 2 out of 3 on the abortion meter, so that means it’s time to take Licht and Dirk down to Planned Parenthood.

kris knows people….lol…and coming from the pete carroll coaching tree isnt bad at all….pete has had success in the nfl….

the “not knowing” is part of the reason why HC’s like lynn and nagy are having some much success…..no one knew what they were going to bring to the table but everyone that knew them, knew they were good coaches and were qualified for the position…..

nagy was a QB coach for 2 years, OC for 2 years and now an HC……kris richard has a similar resume….position coach for years, DC for 3years and now calls the defensive plays for the dallas…..and in KC nagy was in the same position richard is in currently because andy reid runs his offense and calls the plays…..

i hear folks say vic fangio who isnt a bad choice but he’s never been an HC….he’s always been a DC…..

and kris can do the same thing nagy did when he took over the bears…..retain the DC and fix the offense…..kris can come in and retain monken if he chooses and fix the defense…..

just because a coach comes from a “big coaching tree” doesnt mean its a good coaching tree…..lol…

imo, kris richard will be the best available HC candidate and is well qualified…..and he specializes in exactly what we need….a mentally tough HC that can fix the defense and develop players…..

last thing winston & evans needs is another offensive system to learn…..

what happened in seattle was pete needed the young players to hear a change in voice…..something that happens all the time….coaches shake things up…..but pete fired most of his assistance last year so it wasnt just kris…..

kris is calling the plays in dallas….its been mentioned numerous of times and im sure your hear them say it when we play sunday….

last year in KC, nagy title was OC but if you know andy reid he calls the plays for the offense….they shared that responsibility…..

if commish is yelling for kris richard then he at least has to be on the radar in OBP for HC…..

  77. JimmyJack Says:

813 what you are saying is not endorsing Richards a bit IMO.

I’ll stand corrected on McVay cause I thought he was a Andy Ried guy but I think I was wrong on that.

Nonetheless coming from Seattle isnt enough for me. I’m not trying to take away from his accomplishments which were significant. My problem is how we need a whole staff here not just a HC. I just don’t see Richards as the right guy for that job. I would prefer somebody whose more seasoned. There are coaches out there which much deeper roots then this guy and that would give them an advantage over Richards.

The coaching staff is every bit of important as the HC and you say he can develope players but that doesn’t happen without a quality staff.

Your point really takes a nosedive for me when you compare him to Nagy and suggest he come in and just fix the defense. We need significant help on the other side of the ball. Monken hasn’t been overly impressive outside of games 1&2. Maybe he could work in another system but that’s where the conversation ends. The rest of our Offensive coaching staff needs to be completely gutted and rebuilt.

  78. JimmyJack Says:

As far as my top canidate I guess I will say McCarthy.

My best hope is riverboat Ron become avialable. Tomli &Harbaugh could also become avialable.

Not against promoting a coordinator from somewhere I just aren’t doing any research to give you a legit name.

Whoever they bring in I just want it to be somebody that has deeper coaching roots then your guy. Just think that’s the type of guy we need for this job………It might be different if we had a GM or owners I could trust to hire quality assistants but I don’t think we do.

It’s just my opinion and I’ll support whoever they bring in. Just don’t have confidence that a guy who has coaching on one team could assemble an entire staff for us.

The coordinator nobody is talking about….Bears DC. I’ll take that guy, he can decide if he wants Winston, Monken and Licht.
