Mike McCarthy Vs. Dirk Koetter

December 10th, 2018

Who ya’ got?

This will cause a lot of Bucs fans to waste work production by sitting on the can this afternoon.

There seems to be a growing idea among Bucs fans who want Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-watching, yams-eating coach Dirk Koetter to take his act elsewhere that recently-fired Packers coach Mike McCarthy is a better option. Some of these same fans think McCarthy and his Super Bowl ring would be a jewel of a coaching hire that could turnaround the Bucs’ fortunes.

Joe doesn’t know what to think about McCarthy but consider the following before slurping your Wisconsin pilsner:

Since Koetter took over the Bucs in 2016, with a quarterback some believe to be an Alabama version of Brock Osweiler, and with a backup quarterback that is nothing more than Mark Sanchez with facial hair and a Rubik’s Cube fetish, was 19-25 during the same time McCarthy was coaching the Packers.

McCarthy has a 21-22-1 record with the Packers in his last three seasons with a Hall of Fame quarterback running his offense. So McCarthy has a grand total of two more wins than Koetter since Koetter took over the Bucs.

(Koetter has an additional loss since McCarthy was fired to bring Koetter’s career record as an NFL head coach to 19-26).

What does this tell you, that McCarthy is grossly overrated or that Koetter is squeezing wins out of lemon rinds?

Or that Jameis is better than many give him credit for, or that Rodgers is overrated?

Joe reports, you decide.

at this point I don’t care who the coach is, just as long as he will put the team as a whole in positions to win and develop our talent

  2. Bculaw Says:

Don’t understand the desire for McCarthy.

  3. BigPoppaBuc Says:

The Packers always pride themselves on building through the draft. They’ve drafted very poorly in recent years and that was the demise of McCarthy. I can’t honestly tell you what McCarthy’s strength is. I’ve heard he’s a great leader, but that only gets you so far. It’s looking like a few good coaches are going to hit the market. The Glazers need to get this one right.

  4. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

I would put McCarthey in the Rex Ryan bucket of 3rd tier options…

  5. Joe Blahak Says:

I’ll decide…Jameis is a “career backup” and the new eventual starter better be drafted high this coming April..a round 1 or 2 prospect…

  6. pick6 Says:

mike mccarthy is a downgrade. he will be mike smith\lovie-like in his next coaching stop and exposed as a guy who rode the coattails of all-time greats to a slightly better than mediocre run.

  7. pick6 Says:

if you listen to guys who do a good job of breaking down tape, they typically find no rhyme or reason to what Aaron Rodgers WRs are asked to do. It’s one of the least sophisticated schemes in today’s NFL and it works some of the time because Aaron Rodgers is insanely talented

  8. DBS Says:

But the ther are all the people and some that want Licht gonr because we don’t have the talent. Which is his fault. So what is any coach going to do if the talant is not there? Not my words. Just both sides that keep being brought up.

  9. DBS Says:

    ^ then there

  10. Bejesusbelt Says:

No thanks on McCarthy. He has done a lot of nothing with one of the best quarterbacks of our current time. McCarthy is doing this in what has been the weakest division in the NFC. Just not impressed and no warm and fuzzy feeling if he is hired here. If the Glasers hire McCarthy you pretty much just did the same thing as keeping Dirk Koetter but with a much higher price tag. Doesn’t seem like a good business decision to me, but not my money.

  11. unbelievable Says:

Rodgers is way better then Jameis (and way more experience, so that’s understandable).

McCarthy is slightly better than Dirk, and I would prefer that neither of them were coaching the Bucs next year…

    Fun times!

  12. Knucknbuc Says:

Puke if the glazers hire this jackass im out. He had one of the greatest qbs of all time and was carried by him his whole career to whatever success he did have. Ewww… puke.

  13. cgmaster Says:

Joe blahak, it’s clear you don’t watch college football at all. Not one of these kids coming out is worth a second rounder let alone a 1st. SO yeah, let’s take your advice and draft a kid and put him behind a crap line, with no running game and then we can all pick him apart like you guys do to jameis.

  14. joestang Says:

doesnt seem to be much of an upgrade

  15. Bobby M. Says:

Andy Reid was 22-26 his last 3 yrs in Philly…..KC seems to be doing great.

Unless the Bucs are going to trade for a winning coach….they all seem like a gamble.

  16. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Packers GM is almost as bad as LIcht down here. The pack trade an all pro safety for nothing and give the pack offense no run game just like here, so maybe the bay of pigs are back

  17. 813bucboi Says:

mike would be a latter move……

    KRIS RICHARD 4 HC!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  18. Dooshlarue Says:

    McCarthy is a slug.
    No thanks.

  19. Eric Says:

The man is a great coach IMO.

Would be the most proven coach we ever hired.

  20. Waterboy Says:

Will the Packers decline without McCarthy, remain the same or improve? My money is on they won’t miss him as long as Rodgers is there. So unless he’s bringing Aaron Rodgers he wouldn’t be my top choice.

  21. Joe Blahak Says:

    @cgmaster
…Will Grier, has a lot of Mayfield like qualities but all I really wanted to stress was the urgency to replace the FRAUD the Bucs have now, a never will be wannabe

  22. jjuice 32 Says:

With u 813 Kris Richard is the one to get.

  23. SOEbuc Says:

Rivera numero uno. He hasn’t had the best playoff record but has finished first in the NFC South 4 times and 2nd 3 times as HC of the Panthers (8 years) putting together a good program. Has a long time frame of coaching in the NFL. Raised Cam Newton as an NFL QB and Jameis is a Newton type of QB. Even though Breese and Ryan are still playing very well, I don’t think they’re gonna last as long as Brady.

  24. Maze Says:

    Bum vs Bum

  25. Maze Says:

Rodgers overrated? Get some sleep Joe 😅

  26. uckinator Says:

Big Poppa – Agreed that the Packers believe they need to draft well. They had better because they also believe in not going after free agents. It’s the draft or nothing. I like him as a coach and also like Ron Rivera too. No more gambles on college coaches.

  27. SOEbuc Says:

WOULD YOU IDIOTS STOP SAYING KRIS RICHARDS. We need a head coach that has head coaching experience and can put together a solid coaching staff not a guy thats been a defensive backs coach almost his entire career. Same sh!t different 3 years.

  28. zzbuc Says:

the only one I sould consider is Tomlin….if not…Keep Koetter, and bring him a serious running game and more talent on the defense…….

  29. jjbucfan Says:

SO the Raiders show Reggie McKenzie the door today- will get a nice jump on the Bucs in their competition for the most competent GM available if we part with Licht. Next will be the HC, we will wait sooooo long to fire this bum that the top guys will be long gone. Look the Lovie hire was the right hire at the time- that didn’t work out. Dirk was the right hire at the time…that hasn’t worked out-time to cut the cord today or tomorrow- no need to keep this going.

  30. D-Rome Says:

I said it before and I’ll say it again: I really don’t think McCarthy would be much of an upgrade over Dirk Koetter.

  31. Tackleblockwin Says:

I like the Tomlin idea much much better…if he became available.

  32. Max Says:

Seriously overrated coach who’s being defended by the “fraternity of mediocrity” aka oldschool NFL coaches.

  33. SenileSenior Says:

Shame on you for causing that loss of production. !!! .. :>D

  34. JimmyJack Says:

Noticed Joe writes many more articles about possible canidates who already have NFL HC experience.

See very few articles featuring college guys or coordinators.

I’m going to take it upon myself to assume Joe got a good feel that’s the direction our owners are leaning.

  35. NPRSageBoy Says:

If I’m not mistaken, Rodgers was injured quite a bit the last two years. Now, the counter is that JayMiss was injured last year and missed time this year due to his off fields antics. But, anyone who even mentions JayMiss is the same breath as Rodgers needs their head examined.

  36. JimmyJack Says:

The biggest thing I’m looking for is a HC who knows how to assemble a quality NFL coaching staff.

Would love to hear somebody with ties to the Parcells/Bellicheck tree. The Andy Reid tree is doing great things all over the league.
Reid was a Holmgren guy right? That might be a good name to hear.

  37. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

McCarthy teams make a lot less stupid mistakes than Koetters teams.

    Nuff said

  38. Eric Says:

Were not going to get the previous years super bowl champ when your in a coaching search.

This guy has nine playoff teams and a Title. 18-10 in the playoffs.

And in “the last three years” comparison he was in the NFC championship game in 2016. Beat the Giants and Cowboys in the playoffs.

That’s way better than Dirk Koetter.

  39. SOEbuc Says:

If I’m not mistaken, Koetter was on the hot seat after the 5-11 season last year. They said give him one more year to see what happens. 5-11 could be easily reached again this year. No way you can compare Koetter’s God awful tactics to a guy that has a Super Bowl ring. Aaron Rogers or not.

  40. AncientBuc Says:

McCarthy is a good O-line coach but not much else. He always gets pretty good performance from pretty low draft picks on the O-line.

  41. Jean Lafitte Says:

Yeah …just what Jameis needs ..to start over. He’s had Koetter for 4 years and after watching yesterdays game he’s no where near mastering Koetters playbook, but we think if he starts over he will do better? BS

  42. Doctor Stroud Says:

Knowing this front office, they will probably bring in Marvin Lewis for a visit and a possible hire. Licht just loves the Bengals! #PaidFloridaVacation

  43. DaPostman Says:

    #JimHarbaugh

  44. Tbbucs3 Says:

No thanks. Do you really think McCarthy would have a Super Bowl without Aaron Rodgers, a good coach would have 3.

  45. jjbucfan Says:

Jean, he DOES need to start over with a coach that believes in him. It is exactly what he needs and this entire locker room. They need to do a complete cleansing of this coaching staff- top to bottom with the exception of Buckner.

  46. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Joe reports, you decide

I have been reading many comments in regards to Keeping Dirk or hiring a new HC.

Researched many of the names that have been thrown about. Only one has stood out from the rest and that is Kris Richard.

    1) He has an impressive and proven resume.

    2) his specialty – secondary, one of our biggest weaknesses this year.

    3) He is young and fresh meaning you wont get a lovie or Smitty type trying to force a square peg (player) into a round hole (Scheme) just because it worked 10-15-20 years ago.

4)His current work with the Dallas Cowboys has nothing short of impressive.

I am sold on Kris Richard for the Bucs new HC.

  47. Jerry Jones Says:

I’m not gonna let Kris Richards go, he’s Garrett’s replacement.

  48. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

McCarthy did raise and groom Aaron Rodgers to be Aaron Rodgers, maybe he can help Jamies be half as good

  49. StoutGospel Says:

    @Bobby M…

Touche’ Bobby touche’. Very good point made there on Andy Reid.

Ultimately, I’ll roll with John Harbaugh over them all, as the most versatile, capable, calm, unquestioned coach with plug and play material for exactly how the Bucs are already constructed. Then maybe let Monken interview to remain as OC, along with Harbaugh’s ideas for OC.

That…would instill some confidence in the fan base IMO.

  50. NewTampaChris Says:

Until we find someone better, we should keep Jameis.

But we should find someone better.

  51. martinii Says:

I realize I’m in the minority but I don’t see any of the above mention coaches coming to Tampa. the Glazers have screwed themselves with this “Short Leash,” mentality and I think there are way too many wholes to fix in a short period of time. There are examples of coaches that have turned around teams in one or two years (Rams, Bears) but Thats not Tampa. In years passed names like Parcells, Cower, Gruden 2.0, and yes Lovie Smith excited us. Most avoided us like the plague and the one who tried lasted 2 years. Betting on Mc Carthy, Rivera, or Tomlin is pie in the sky. No big name, long tenured prospects are coming to Tampa to die. Maybe a Coordinator or College Coach, but like I said before that means at least 3 years to playoffs and a lot more high draft picks. Meanwhile some really good players are wasting their careers. IMO keep Koetter and Licht and add as many good players as you can. Also keep Duffner and Buckner.

  52. Not there yet Says:

Who knows who these psychotic fans are screaming for us to hire Mike McCarthy. I think his record would be better with a better gm and Rodgers getting hurt constantly didn’t help. Both these coaches suck and I’d trust a first time coach over both

  53. ncbucsfan Says:

VIC FANGIO 2019. Somehow everybody missed the Bears shutting down the Rams!

  54. Dre Says:

Ummm you said it joe a super bowl ring on his resume … dirk hasn’t even sniffed the playoffs

  55. Dre Says:

I can also tell you he’s won a lot of games consistently better than koetter

  56. BucEmUp Says:

THAT’S a big hell no..If he can’t win with Rodgers he can’t win.

BRUCE Arians..He wants to.coach again and he would be exactly the type of.coach Jameis would need

  57. Mort Says:

It would be irresponsible to fire Dirk Koetter if your “Fix” is Mike McCarthy. That’s foolish.

  58. SOEbuc Says:

I really have no clue why more people aren’t mentioning Rivera. Has been the HC of the second toughest team in the toughest division (not this year) which is OUR division.

    70-54 (8 years as HC)

-Jameis is looking more like Newton every week with his run skills.

    – Philadelphia Eagles (LB Coach ’99-’03). Eagles advanced to the NFC Championship 3 consecutive years and is highly credited with helping develop Jerimiah Trotter. He was brought in by Andy Reid when he was President of the Eagles and kept on Reid staff when he was HC for all the people that keep mentioning Reid’s name.

-Chicago Bears (DC ’04-’06). 2005 Bears rated second best in the NFL. 2006 third ranked points allowed.

-San Diego Chargers (LB Coach 2008)

-Carolina Panthers (HC Panthers ’08-present)- I’m a Bucs fan and have hated this guy for a long time if you can put those two together.

-2x Head Coach of the Year (2013, 2015)
-NFL Assistant Coach of the Year (2005)

THIS IS A GUY THAT KNOWS HOW TO PUT A COACHING STAFF TOGETHER and is what is needed

  59. denjoe Says:

Koetter in the same amount of time hasn’t sniffed the playoffs!

  60. Stevbobucsfan Says:

Come Jan when the bucs fire Koetter I would like to see them go after Arians or the Harbaugh brother that’s with the Ravens. None of this.hot coordinator stuff. The bucs need to win now, just look at the attendance at RJ stadium lately

  61. BigMacAttack Says:

Stop looking at resumes and look at the person. I think another retread coach is a mistake. You’re already in the hole. Find a young up and coming coach who’s looking for his first shot at HC. A defensive coach preferably with Military Experience and understands leadership. I think even a guy like Raheem but with brains 😂

  62. jjbucfan Says:

    ^^thank you^^- no more re-treads.

I’ve read that it could possibly be a package deal with McKenzie/McCarthy, considering they worked together in GB.

Nick Satan should be the Bucs target.
