“If You Get Rid Of Him, Then What Do You Have?”

December 27th, 2018

Defender of America.

There are some folks, even former Bucs, who have started the campaign for the Bucs to wash their hands of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Prickly Pete Prisco of CBS Sports believes that is short-sighted if not naive.

In a breakdown of the final game of the season with Brady Quinn, the subject of Jameis came up. Prisco came with a strong defense of Jameis and believes he is the proverbial face of the franchise.

“I think he is making the case to be the face of the franchise and I think he should be,” Prisco said. “Let’s be real: If you get rid of him, then what do you have? Nothing. Then what do you do, go to the draft?

“I think you bring him back for another year and whoever is the coach and whoever is the general manager — because those guys, both might be gone — and you let Jameis Winston at least be your starting quarterback.”

Here is the thing. People (namely, those who cannot wait to run Jameis out of town) always bring up prospective coaches wouldn’t want to touch Jameis with a 10-foot pole. Joe thinks that’s absurd.

Who do you think coaches would want to work with, a guy who has an incredible worth ethic and already has established he can succeed on this level — who may just need a little tinkering — or one of the following as a starting quarterback: Ryan Tannehill, Mike Glennon, Brock Osweiler, Tyrod Taylor, Cody Kessler, Brandon Weeden or Sean Mannion?

  1. LakeLand Says:

    There’s Teddy Bridgewater
    Nick Foles

    Those are playoffs Quarterbacks

  2. Bucnjim Says:

    I actually agree but he was once on Freeman’s side as well. The best point being made is who do you turn to NEXT year. I would have to say Winston with a backup plan. Foles will not be available with the Philly $20 Million option on the table. That leaves? Nothing! Draft potential after the first few rounds since there are no good bets at QB anyway.

  3. Joel Says:

    Josh Freeman had an incredible work ethic. Numerous articles about that.

    Problem is, Jameis loves to turn the ball over. No matter how many excuses this website makes for him. He’s a turnover machine. Going back to 2014 at FSU.

  4. Buc believer Says:

    I GUARANTEE arhat if we get rid of Jameis he will be another in the long line of Tampa Quarterbacks to leave this team and have great stand multiple Super Bowls with another team. See Steve Young Trent Dilfer Vinny Testaverde to name a few! Short sighted idiots!!!

  5. LakeLand Says:

    Also there will be other Quarterbacks available before the 2019 season

    It don’t take much to improve a 5 win team
    Even a rookie QB should improve upon that

    Nick Foles and Joe Flacco are two of many that can be obtain through a trade

    These are some options the Bucs have

    They do have options

    They do have options

  6. Aceofaerospace Says:

    It’s not my money so I hope they bring him back. I’d love to see what he can do will a great coach and an at least average defense. That being said, I want a backup plan also as I expect any decent coach and GM would.

  7. Bucnjim Says:

    Vinny never won young won one while starting and Dilfer was released after the SB. If you meant to say Doug Williams he would be the one I’d agree with.

  8. Bucnjim Says:

    Oh and idiots would go all the way back to the original owners and management.

  9. Stevbobucsfan Says:

    I agree also. I mean Jamis haven’t been lights out but he has played a hell oo a lot good games. I think he just need coaching. But what do the bucs do, go over pay for players like K Cousins C Keenan or get another rookie and hope and pray he’s not a miss or bust. People are saying look at B Mayfield, yes I have but I want to see him do what he’s doing this year next year then I will be a believer

  10. JimmyJack Says:

    If a new HC wants to replace Winston I wouldn’t rule out a trade. It wouldn’t shock me if a guy like Ben Rothlisberger or maybe Stafford we’re moved this off-season.

    The free agency options are pretty weak.

    If we draft a QB the best idea would probably to keep Winston for the one year and let them battle. That or bring in a established vet to let the rookie develope under……..Don’t see a guy like that on that list. Maybe Flacco would fit that role.

  11. LakeLand Says:

    Steve Young won a Super Bowl with a team that won multiple Super Bowls while he was riding the pine. Trent Dilfer started 8 games and won a Super Bowl with a defensive team. Doug Williams started 2 regular season games, Then the Skins went on the playoff tear, and won the Super Bowl.

    These guys wasn’t the difference makers that Bucs fans pretend they were.

  12. OneBucPerson Says:

    Stick with Jameis at least until the end of next season, then see what happens.

  13. Not there yet Says:

    Pete stop talking common sense Winston haters don’t understand logic because they don’t want him to succeed which is why they want him out of here before March

  14. DB55 Says:

    In the 4 years prior to Jameis Winston the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won a total of 17 games.

    In the 4 years after Jameis Winston the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won 25 games maybe 26 depending on Sunday.

  15. thegregwitul Says:

    At 24 years old, with multiple seasons under his belt, and with one more season on his contract, I want to see Jameis Winston back with the Buccaneers in 2019.

    I want to see what Jameis can do with a new coaching staff and new GM, as I feel it’s time for the Glazers to wash their hands of what is left from the Lovie era, from a coaching/front office perspective. This washing of the hands mentality might have to extend to some established veterans, such as Gerald McCoy, who might be able to fetch a 2nd round pick.

    As for low cost rookies who have shown little to nothing; Ronald Jones, Noah Spence, MJ Stewart, Vernon Hargraves, etc. I would like to see them brought into camp and given an opportunity as well.

    If the Bucs move on from Koetter/Licht and bring in a new regime with a different approach, I have confidence that the Bucs can crawl out of the basement of the NFL.

  16. Rick Says:

    He’s average as of now. But I think keeping him is the best option. No one will be worth the risk in the draft or free agency. Use all picks to patch up holes. 2020 will have a better crop of qbs coming out of college. He’s the temporary answer, not the long term answer as of now. Maybe a new staff can get more out of him, if he gets better after next season decide then. IMO.

  17. thegregwitul Says:

    I meant to state low cost rookie contracts for guys like Spence and Hargraves. I’m sure some of these players just aren’t going to make it regardless of who is on the coaching staff, but I remember Jerry Hughes being a massive bust for the Colts before he was traded to the Bills, were he finally showed his potential.

  18. Topcoach1978 Says:

    Qb starved franchise that’s forced to settle and like it smh! This team will be last in the NFC South and bottom 5 of the NFC for the next 4 years! PERIOD!!!!

  19. ben Says:

    Has Winston proved to be worthy of the 1st pick in the draft or has he been passed by by qb’s taken after him on teams with lesser weapons?He is accurate throwing to receivers in stride ? His he good with the long ball or only throwing to a spot? Didn’t he cost his school Big $$ after
    female issues with charges of rape .. Did you see Winston in the cafe (or video)screaming the nastiest things he wanted done to some female in front of other students . Didn’t Winston “borrow” crap legs from Publix and tried to lie his way out which the employee and publix both said the items were not given to him? Didn’t Winston forget to tell the nfl and team and the incident with the uber driver and then lied saying he was with another guys? Did he put his team 1st and state he is not allowed on uber and why? Did he try to hide from the truth again which got him suspended ? How many has he put the team on his back for a win ?Which qb is more exciting to watch between him and Fitz? Who is the worst qb in the bucs own division? Why don’t you believe the bucs can do better then a qb thought of nationally as a loser? Maybe bucs can find a qb that can read a play clock after only a few games!!.. or not..:>)) (just my thoughts) Its a bucs life !!

  20. Doctor Stroud Says:

    Misery loves company! Prickly Pete is a favorite up here in northeast Florida, and he just doesn’t want the Bucs to outshine the Jags.

    The fact is that JW wants to command a top 5 QB salary, but he just doesn’t play at that level. Yes, keep him if that’s the best option we have, but the Bucs should also draft a QB. Can we say with 100% certainty that JW won’t get suspended again for “off the field issues”?

  21. Fartman Says:

    I haven’t seen jameis succeed at this level. In fact, he’s regressed since the Carolina game.

  22. MHBuc25 Says:

    LOL Joe. It’s about image man, get with the program.

  23. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    Best case is we get a solid OC and QB coach to help correct things that little league coaches see should be corrected with him. If he plays well slap the tag on him. If he plays well under the tag go ahead and pay him as he would be 26 I believe at that point and would hopefully be at his peak.

  24. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    This coaching staff has set up this team to fail. Our oline can’t block for an extended time, our coach has flat out said he does not coach Winston on throwing the deep ball but we still call for 5-7 step drop backs for routes that take forever to develope.

    We have seen Winston be deadly precise with intermediate routes and has was advertised as throwing amazing anticipatory throws in college and our coaches have not drawn up plays to these strengths. Koetter is the Mike Smith of the offense. Better coaching will provide better results.

  25. Dom is gone ... Licht Says:

    Multiple superbowls is nonsense and anyone spewing that garbage is an idiot. Some of the greatest to ever play the game have none or only one!! That being said I think Jamies is a POS for his off the field discretion and should be dumped for thAt alone! Will not happen his upside is to great and with the right coach could be a great player. Dorks down the field passing game is ridiculous. Yes it nets a lot of yards but is a turn over waiting to happen. Look at the Chiefs , Saints , Rams lots of screens and they actually RUN the damn ball. Ja

  26. Bobby M. Says:

    Draft a rookie…bring in a vet to compete with Winston. Keep one, trade the other.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Allow me to make a solid prediction:

    Neither Jameis Winston nor Jason Licht are going anywhere this year.

    That prediction may as well be written in stone.

    Jason Licht will have a new deal announced quickly after the end of the season.

    And I hope the first thing he does is trade DJax to the worst team possible for a late round pick. Just to prevent that injury faking, selfish, quitter of a wide receiver from choosing his next landing spot.

  28. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    Draft a rookie bring in Teddy B. To fight with Winston for starting Qb. Sounds good Bobby M.

  29. El_Buc941 Says:

    What we would have is $20mil in cap space plus $10mil from Jackson. With those 30 we could get Flaco and Le’Veon Bell. But the problem isn’t Jameis…its the coaches. How is it we have the #1 offense and such a bad record.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    By the way. Has anyone even thought about holding the QB coach accountable? After all, he is the one who is supposed to be teaching technique to Jameis.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    There are a couple things that might happen.

    First, Steelers fans want Tomlin fired. If the Steelers ownership is stupid enough to listen to those fans, HE should be our next head coach. He would come willingly too.

    Second, Lions fans want to give up on Matt Stafford. If the Lions release him, or want to do a trade, this would remind me of when Drew Brees hit the market and the Saints got him. The Bucs should at least consider a Q B swap. Stafford has a good number of years left in him.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

    @Bonzai … “Neither Jameis Winston nor Jason Licht are going anywhere this year. Jason Licht will have a new deal announced quickly after the end of the season.”

    I hope you’re wrong for the Bucs sake Bonzai. That would be the final nail in the coffin for a LOT of fans I predict. Lapdog Licht can’t fix the problem because HE IS THE PROBLEM.

  33. JimmyJack Says:

    Bobby M…..hahaha it sounds like you want a little of everything. Nice plan but I don’t think it fits into the budget. I get what your saying about trade the other but there’s no guarantee you find a partner. In the meantime the salary cap would be clogged into the QB position preventing upgrades elsewhere.

  34. JimmyJack Says:

    Bonzai good points on both. But I would still hold Dirk accountable along with the QB coach. The top reason Dirk got the job was to develope Winston. Hiring the best QB coach was his responsibility.

    I did throw out Stafford’s name above. The one thing that may prevent them from trading him is because their coach will be entering year 2. It would be kind of rotten of them to stick their coach with a lesser QB if he is against it. I would assume trading Stafford would be a decision that includes the HC.

  35. JimmyJack Says:

    Another guy that can be a trade target would be Carr with Oakland.

    I don’t think we should rule out trades options and only focus on Free Agent options as the only way Winston can be replaced.

    I could easily see a lot of HC canidates believe this team is built to win right now if they can get good QB play and make a few other changes.

  36. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    I wish we could all just admit that America’s Quarterback has been and always will be a really dumb nick name.

  37. BrianBucs Says:

    Mr. Prisco apparently doesn’t pay any attention to what goes on in Tampa.
    The only things that Winston has established are that he can turn the ball over, rack up yards in garbage time or against loose defenses, lose close games and get himself suspended.
    Also, if Joe thinks it absurd that perspective head coaching candidates would turn down the Bucs job if they are forced to start Winston at QB then Joe is just clearly not thinking.
    As it happens every year in the NFL a couple of rookies or young QB’s will blow up, bring excitement to their team and get them in playoff contention. I would love to see that happen here instead of watching the same old crap that we’ve seen here for the last 4 years.

  38. Dre Says:

    Joe dug deep in his booty trying to find a positive nugget on jameis

  39. Joe Says:

    Nick Foles and Joe Flacco are two of many that can be obtain through a trade

    These are some options the Bucs have

    Yeah, Joe Flacco is an option. Just like slamming your rig into a telephone pole is an option next time you get behind a wheel.

  40. Joe Says:

    Josh Freeman had an incredible work ethic.

    No he didn’t. That was a con pushed by management. Trust Joe on this.

  41. Knack2Babbyyyy Says:

    The Jameis situation is simple. He returns for his 5th year, which will be his final prove-it year. If he plays well like he has since he’s returned into the starting role, then you sign him to a long-term extension. If he fails to live up to his potential, then the Bucs will let him walk, and draft a new QB in 2020. #I’mWith3

  42. bucfan999 Says:

    The people clamoring for Jameis to be cut are the same idiots who was yelling what a waste of a pick Vita Vea was all year long. Just look at the stats for Vea & McCoy this year with Vea missing all of training camp, all the preseason and the 1st 3 games of the regular season.

    McCoy = 13 games played, 24 total tackles (14 solo, 10 asst) with 6 sacks
    Vea = 12 games played, 24 total tackles (17 solo, 7 asst) with 3 sacks

    I’d say they are pretty comparable which is kind of sad since McCoy has probably played more snaps than Vea.

    Keep Winston and let the new coach (GM?) make the call after a season with him. Trade McCoy which would free up $13,000,000 & cut or trade Desean which would free up another $10,000,000 which could be used to resign Humphries & Winston.

  43. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    Idiots like Brian are so annoying. You think a coach would avoid Tampa with a QB that has shown that he has the potential to be great? You think they would say the only way I am coming is if you dump him, bring in some shtty journeyman QB and overdraft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd in a WEAK QB draft and avoid filing more crucial holes on the team? You are the one clearly not thinking.

  44. Bucsace Says:

    America’s Bust – Jameis Winston

  45. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

    Lol @ fans clamoring for Flacco or Foles.
    Why not just get Glennon?
    BrianBucs says:
    As it happens every year in the NFL a couple of rookies or young QB’s will blow up, bring excitement to their team and get them in playoff contention. I would love to see that happen here instead of watching the same old crap that we’ve seen here for the last 4 years.
    ———————
    Bro have you hit your head recently or just decide to be a Bucs fan?
    You are literally talking about Jameis Winston who recorded one of the best rookie seasons in the history of the league and had his team 9-7 and in playoff contention.
    Bro cover up, you bias is showing and the hate inside you has consumed the common sense and memory part of your brain.

  46. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Trade:
    • Jameis Winston

    Sign/Re-Sign
    • Nick Foles
    • Ryan Griffin

    Draft
    • Ryan Finely

    Possible QB Depth Chart
    >>>Nick Foles | Ryan Griffin | Ryan Finely

    Or Trade for Jacoby Brissett – looking forward to the 2020 draft.

    Either way, life moves on.

  47. RealBucFan Says:

    That is stand up comedy material right above my post. I cant stop laughing.

  48. Jean Lafitte Says:

    2nd article in a week quoting this guy …Joe’s gonna get his wish and we’ll probably keep Jameis but after next years crappy season with Jameis who will you blame then, because we already know it won’t be Jameis. I can hear it all now, Offensive line, defense, Jameis had to learn a new playbook etc… on and on and on. No accountability what so ever.

  49. Dave Says:

    Jameis is never going to get any better. His accuracy was a problem in college and it’s not any better in the NFL. That’s something that doesn’t get better at this stage of a career.

    I’m sick and tired of drafting these QBs that have accuracy problems.

  50. firethecannons Says:

    Get a new tackle with our 1st round, keep Jameis with a new coach and if no good then get a new QB in 2020, oh and get a decent o line coach, try Donovan Smith at guard after the franchise tag

  51. D1QB Says:

    Snowman,

    “Winston having one of best rookie seasons in the history of league”

    “Hate has consumed the memory part of your brain”

    Lol….wow!! Amazing………

  52. Phil Says:

    Jameis is our guy period.

  53. StoutGospel Says:

    It would have been prudent, to also include an intelligent discussion in this article around why outbidding Jacksonville for Nick Foles on a 3 year deal (similar to what JAX gave Bortles 2 years ago=3 years $48 mill), allows for him to become an established starter here full-time, and allows the new coaching GM staff enough time to see how he and their offensive philosophy mesh well, while perhaps looking also at the 2020/2021 draft classes of QB along the way. If those QB draft classes suit their fancy, and if our corresponding draft pick is realistic enough to obtain their desired choice, then we could trade Foles at a later date….

    Jameis and the Foles discussion could have been meshed here in this for the scuttlebutt to commence.

    Glazers go get JOHN Harbaugh! Bucs resurgence!!

  54. old fart buc fan Says:

    how about trade this years number 1 pick for somebody elses next years number one pick,plus a second round this year, and maybe a third or fourth rounder also?(thus giving us 2 second round picks, and our third rounder back this year) that way we set up for next year, with 2 first round picks and can pretty much get what ever you want next year. keep Winston for 1 more year and if he proves he can get better, if he does, great! if not, then we pick a qurterback next year,if he does do well, we have 2 number one picks to build with whatever we need?

  55. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    JOE says…
    “Who do you think coaches would want to work with, a guy who has an incredible worth ethic and already has established he can succeed on this level”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    EXACTLY. — NONE of us are saying that JW has been perfect. But he does have an incredible work ethic and he does have plenty of skills. He can be taken to another level.
    I believe there are only a handful of actual JW “haters” here on JBF. — Most are fans that have been frustrated (and some of those are just ready to move on).
    But we ALL are BUCS fans.. and just want for Jameis to become the best that he can be, and to be a playoff caliber QB.
  56. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    Joel Says:
    “Josh Freeman had an incredible work ethic.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Joel. I mean, cmon man.
    It was all that guy could do to roll out of bed every morning.
    Please don’t compare his work ethic to that of Jameis Winston.

  57. Andrew Says:

    Good point, Joe. I think Jameis would be the most sought after FA on the market. If coaches for other teams would want Jameis, what would make us think someone wouldn’t want the Buc’s job partly because of Jameis.

  58. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    ben Says:
    Maybe bucs can find a qb that can read a play clock”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ben, it’s well established that you don’t like JW, and that is fine. But JW has not an issue with the play clock running out in the past. It happened last week. It happens. To Brady.. and Peyton Manning.. and even Drew Brees. — We have all seen it. It happens.
    I was just as mad at JW (and fricking Dirk) when it happened.
    But it happens.
  59. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    @LUV
    Man, I respect your posts a lot but Jacoby Brissett????
    Cmon man. We would go 1-15.
    Do you honestly have that little belief in JW?
  60. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    Dave Says:
    “(Accuracy) doesn’t get better at this stage of a career.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    JW
    2015 – 58.3%
    2016 – 60.8%
    2017 – 63.8%
    2018 – 64.7%

    No disrespect, Dave, but your premise is not correct.

  61. Jameis Almighty! Says:

    Suck it Winston Bashers. Jameis is the man for the job! He shall rise over you imbiscles and win meaningful games. Lost season because of Licht and Koetter. Firreeeeee Licht!

  62. D1QB Says:

    Demon,

    Accuracy and completion rate are two separate measurements.
    But it’s become almost interchangeable over the couple years.

    When a person says Winston isn’t accurate.
    Like clockwork, completion % and the fact that the numbers each show significant massive improvements. Completion % can improve.

    Accuracy???????????? one of the longest running ideas in sports is can accuracy improve. Most if not say no. Troy Aikman when asked about accuracy said no……
    And He never mentioned completion %.

  63. T REX Says:

    “I GUARANTEE arhat if we get rid of Jameis he will be another in the long line of Tampa Quarterbacks to leave this team and have great stand multiple Super Bowls with another team. See Steve Young Trent Dilfer Vinny Testaverde to name a few! Short sighted idiots!!!”
    ————————————-

    Dilfer? LOLOLOL. He sucked after he left. Testaverde never won a SB. Doug W had a losing record after he left here. Young is the only one really to be upset about. And he sat behind Montana for years. Please stop the lies.

  64. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    D1QB Says:
    “one of the longest running ideas in sports is can accuracy improve. Most if not say no. Troy Aikman when asked about accuracy said no……
    And He never mentioned completion %.”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Definitely fair arguments, D1, thank you sir! — Yes, I have heard Aikman talk about that, and he is certainly an authority on the subject with the precision accuracy that he had.
  65. RustyRhinos Says:
    What coach that has not drafted Winston will put up with his constant lose ball security. If a new Head coach comes in and Good old #3 has another of his multi turnover games that will be the last game he plays for the bucs. In the land of JBF’ers the new coach can not afford to not win because the “franchise QB” has issues. No way fire that bum, he can’t coach a QB as great as Mr. Winston. We need better plays, better coaches, better WR to catch, or just a few bad teams so that the ” franchise” looks the part.
