First Down Maker

December 27th, 2018

Clutch. (Photo courtesy of Buccaneers.com.)

To hear some Bucs fans wail, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is the worst quarterback in the free world.

Turnovers, bad decisions, and the one that simply skyrockets some into orbit because they can complete the same passes on PlayStation, Jameis can’t hit bombs to malcontent wide receiver DeSean Jackson too often.

But statisticians from NFL Films would tell those same folks to hold up. Per the numberscrunchers, no quarterback is more clutch than Jameis. Research for NFL Matchup seen on BSPN, reveals no quarterback moves the chains as well as Jameis. Not Matty Ice. Not Ben Roethlisberger. Not Andrew Luck. Nobody.

Jameis converts 45.8 percent of third downs the Bucs offense faces. That’s impressive to Joe.

Imagine if the Bucs offense ran more pass plays outside the pocket where Jameis excels, or the offensive line wasn’t flag-happy every time they got the ball inside the opponent’s 40?

And to listen to the folks who cannot wait to run Jameis out of town, they’d be happier with the likes of Ryan Tannehill at quarterback. Yet guess who is the worst in the NFL at converting third downs?

Yup. That would be Tannehill.

As Joe likes to say, “Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it.”

hopefully, glazers bring in kris richard!!!!!!!!

imo, he would be able to develop winston into what we know he can be….a great QB…..

we need a coach who can:
    -develop talent(noah spence&VHG)
-knows how to deal with strong personalities(djax)
    -fix the defense(see dallas)…..

    KRIS RICHARD 4 HC!!!!!

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#ADIOSDIRK!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  2. Tom Edrington Says:

If you draw a line down the middle of a legal pad and on one side have good stuff Jameis does and on the other side have bad stuff Jameis does, it would probably, most likely end up a wash….

  3. Chuckstutz Says:

Even more impressive when you consider our lack of a run game. Gotta believe 90% of that 45.8% was from the pass.

  4. JWBUCS Says:

If only the Bucs could get this offense into the end zone and score points!

  5. 813bucboi Says:

    how would he develop winston?….

by having an aggressive defense and run game which is what made winston successful at free shoes…i mean FSU….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#ADIOSDIRK!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

Nope just the worst starting Bucs QB these past 4 years with NO signs of improvement

  7. Eric Says:

Wonder what would happen if we had a top ten defense and could run the ball?

And maybe protect the passer a bit?

  8. DBS Says:

Stats are for losers. Points on the board win games.

Josh Johnson is #2 on the list… He must be a GREAT QB also. Lets see what team shells out 21 million for Josh Johnson this off season.

  11. JimmyJack Says:

Winston’s saving grace might just be that he has a one year deal. And it’s an off-season that has no QBs avialable.

Winston needs to start winning though or this is likely his last year in Tampa. He can start on Sunday.

  12. DBS Says:

Oh. And now the people have been proven right. The only time he could put up a larger score was in garbage time. If the defense holds the opposing offense down this offense goes nowhere.

  13. LakeLand Says:

We all agree on that as the stat we care about.
The point of the above stat, is that JW is quite capable of leading a team downfield consistently and moving the chains. The rest can be rounded out with a little bit better coaching.

I will ask the question again.

Name the QB in the history of the game that has won with a bottom 5 rushing attack, a bottom 5 defense, and a bottom 5 kicking game? I’ll wait….

  20. 407buc Says:

Josh Johnson being included doesn’t mean the stat is good or bad.He has started a few games and doesn’t have the number of attempts that the others do.It would be like a September baseball callup won the ERA or batting average title.

  21. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

The immortal Josh Johnson is #2

  22. PSLBob Says:

Jameis has the skill set to get the job done. Poor coaching and scheming, bad O-line play, the lack of a run game, which pairs nicely with bad O-line play, and the absence of a reliable kicker are the main reasons for the loses. Unfortunately, Ls are traditionally placed on the QBs shoulders, although I don’t think that’s always fair. Has he ever made bad decisions? Yes. Has ball security been a problem at times? Yes. But even the greats, which I’m not saying he is, have had those problems. I really want to see what a new Head Coach and OC can do with Jameis, and I agree totally with Joe. Be careful what you wish for. I remember when Doug Williams was labeled the only person in the world that could overthrow the Ayatollah (in Iran for you newbies). He was run out of town and went on to take the Redskins to a Super Bowl. Just goes to show what a different environment can do for a player.

  23. KyBucsFan Says:

I would like to see how Aaron Rodgers looks with no running game, a sieve of an offensive line, the worst defense in the league and a kicker who can’t hit the broadside of a barn. But yeah let’s blame Winston for everything.

  24. PSLBob Says:

Ndog, you must have been reading my mind!

  25. GhostofSchiano Says:

Give Winston at the very least an average offensive line and an average run game and he would excel. Unfortunately Winston plays behind a below average O-line which translates to a below average run game. I guess next Winston will be expected to kick field goals and return punts.

When the Glazer lads break the glass on the emergency box out will pop Kris Richard.

Get it right Glazers…. GET. IT. RIGHT. THIS. TIME.

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’d like to know how stat that computes in the red zone….

We know Jameis & the Bucs can move the ball down the field….but the choking in the red zone and the turnovers kill us.

  27. Jean Lafitte Says:

Just shows me how important it is to extend Hump’s contract again. He bails Winston out a lot.

  28. Buc4life Says:

21-32? I forgot Jameis plays defense, offensive line, running back and special teams. Blame Jameis for everything. It’s just amazes me! Barry Sanders was a great running back and how many super bowls, I’m sorry winning seasons did he have. It take more than a QB to win a game especially when your defense is giving up 30 points a game since you been in the league.

  29. AlteredEgo Says:

PSL…and other enablers … all the talent fix’n ain’t gonna do a damn thing for Jameis’s poor accuracy…. all the fix’n will only make it more frustrating when Jamyth can’t close the deal at the end of each season when the good teams each year play each other in loser goes home

  30. Ndog Says:

I just don’t understand why “Bucs fans” see a positive trait about their QB and the first thing they want to do is say no that can’t be right he sucks. But at the same time they say the coaching staff sucks. So do these people really believe that the coaching staff has no bearing on the performance of the players when they clearly admit the coaching is poor? I mean isn’t it common sense that one great influences the other? I mean guys we talk about the lack of scoring and want to blame the QB when it is a documented fact that our oline and running game are poor. Do you guys really in your heart think that doesn’t effect our ability to score? I mean guys I know you might hate him for other reasons but really do you really blame him for the lack of scoring when team don’t even worry about our running game and strictly protect against the pass? No matter how you feel wouldn’t be prudent to see what he could do with a running game and a defense?

Regardless, Jay-Miss has to be brought back next year and the team needs to franchise him, and franchise him again until they can find a replacement. See you folks say stats don’t matter only wins but you say the backup played better but the starter won more games this year than the backup. So stats aren’t important unless there the ones you want unless it doesn’t prove what you want then they don’t matter again. Guys just face it he could go 40 for 41 with 3TDs and no turnovers and you would complain about that one incomplete pass. You hate the guy we get it but just don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth cause you make zero cents.

  42. NCBucsFan15 Says:

You may be right about that, but I have a feeling that there are only a handful of true “haters” out there.

Most of the detractors are just frustrated and want JW to be better. As we ALL do.

    — I definitely believe he can be and I am a JW fan.
… but he has to prove it to the detractors.

  54. Bucnjim Says:

Wesley when Winston stops fumbling bumbling stumbling the critics will stop criticizing. What are his numbers inside the red zone? That is when the offense self destructs. Shame really. Not all on Winston either.

I’ll make this easy math for everyone. Since everyone knows we can’t run the ball each time in the endzone means the defense is going to have 7 players dropping into the endzone. Of course we also know that we have a tough time pass blocking so we keep in the back and at times the tightened as well, so that means we have usually 5, sometimes 4, running routes. So that is 7 covering 5 from the snap with no hesitation due to a lack of running game. It’s simple there is no where to throw the ball. Then mix in the fact that we don’t do anything creative with our motion, routes or presnap you get a crappy redzone team.

  58. Bucnjim Says:

We should really get back to the real source of the Bucs win lose record turnover ratio. The Bucs are second to last only to SF and you see their record. If you turn the ball over you lose 50-75% of the time or more. It is a little more complicated but not much! The only chance Winston has as a leader and QB is STOP turning it over. That is the simplest way to put it!

  59. Pewter Says:

We rank 29th in rushing currently.

We rank 1st in passing yards per game and 3rd in total offense.

We rank 29th in points allowed on defense.

All of you who think our win loss record is on Jameis are laughable and I’d be curious to know how many of you played football after pee wee. Some of you have comprehension skills like peewee players…

Guess what happens when you get to the red zone, geniuses? Our passing game becomes nullified because you have a lid on the top of the field and defenses can really pin their ears back with no consequence of getting burned by the run or having our O-line stonewall ANYBODY. Take your hate for the young man somewhere else because it’s honestly appalling. Funny how none of these haters can bring any evidence to the table other than our win loss record.

  60. Pewter Says:

Buc n Jim, how many takeaways do we have this year?

  61. Pewter Says:

    Ndog gets it…

  62. Ndog Says:

You guys have been brain washed by Koetter when it comes to TOs. Are they important yes but for example Nick Folks has started 4 games this year and he has a TO in everyone of them yet his record is 3-1. Teams win and lose games not one players TOs. Those are going to happen but it is not illegal to get a TO yourself every once in awhile to help your offense out.

Mahomes has 13 TOs in 16 games this year so how is it possible they are winning. Guys Koetter is an idiot, he runs a high risk offense and yet bases all of winning and losing on TOs that is just flat stupid.

  63. Dan Says:

Better quarterbacks than Winston. Luck Rodgers Trubisky Ryan Brees Brady Roethlisberger Manning Dalton Cam Smith Wilson Stafford Rivers Carr Watson Cousins Foles Wentz Mahomes. So anyway yea our guy pretty much stinks

  64. TheNorm Says:

Pat Mahomes is on a team with a terrible defense but they figure out a way to win.

So all of you idiots that blame the defense for Winston’s pathetic record can kick rocks.

Peyton Manning had bad defenses as well and won.

But all you FSU nut riders blame every single thing except the source.
    You’re all idiots.

  65. Ndog Says:

So Norm you think Dirk Koetter is a good of a coach as Andy Reid? And BTW the KC defense is still better than the Bucs AND their running game is much better than the Bucs (16 to 29) Also their kicker has missed 3 kicks ALL SEASON compared to ours missing at least one weekly. So again not quite apples to oranges my friend but you keep making stuff up to make yourself feel better.

  66. Joel Says:

2nd most turnovers in the NFL since 2015. Behind only Blake Bortles.

I dont see Joe making excuses for Bortles. Nor would he.

The fanbase is only mocking them

  70. TheNorm Says:

    Ofcourse dirk sucks.

But he doesn’t make Winston throw interceptions or fumble the ball every 4th drive.

Look dude no matter what anyone says you’re gonna believe Winston is the best QB to ever grace the earth and that’s fine. However those of us with a little common sense believe he is average.

I mean come on all of you have stated that he needs a great defense a great running back a great kicker and great coaches to be successful. So in other words he needs everything around him to be perfect to win. That’s bullspit because you same idiots claimed that he would immediately make everyone around him better and he doesn’t. You all also said because he’s so great he would make up for a running game. You all are changing your tune to fit your stupid pathetic narrative.

And the truth is he’s average or barely above if everything is perfect .

Most QB’s that are average can find some success with a good defense a good running game and good coaches. He does not make others around him better and f you believe otherwise you shouldn’t be allowed to watch football.

I agree we have no other options so he will be here next year. But year 4 has not proven him to be much better than his rookie year. Sure he’s a little better but not number one pick better.

You guys are so far up his as s that no matter what anyone says you will never believe anything other than he’s the greatest to ever live. You’re all just looking for the next person to blame.

If he went to Florida you FSU jock sniffers would be singing a completly different tune. Bunch of hypocrites.

  77. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

It’s funny how the detractors claim us supporters think he is the best QB in the league. I have yet to see one poster claim he is elite or the best QB. If it weren’t for idiots on here saying stupid junk like Foles or Dalton or Stafford is better or Jameis is terrible, then there wouldn’t be the need to defend the best QB this franchise has ever had! It’s amazing that he needs to be defended.

Is he a top 5 QB? No and I don’t think anyone would claim he is at this point.

The defense for Jameis is we all can see the talent and the lack of a full team built around him yet simple minded football fans that don’t truly grasp the concept of the sport seem to believe he is the main problem with this team.

I can’t wait for next year!

  78. Knack2Babbyyyy Says:

Jameis is the top QB in the league when it comes to yards per attempt, 3rd down success, and QBR when passing outside of the pocket. Sometimes I feel like we don’t deserve him. With a capable defense, a running game, and an offensive line that can actually protect him, he could be extremely dangerous.

  79. Bird Says:

    Alaskan.

Don’t know what posts you haven’t seen. It’s all over the place. Go back and look at a random Jameis article.

    Elite …top 5. …hall of famer

    All used.

And he keeps being compared to manning , elway, Brady , Rodgers All the greats

  80. Ndog Says:

The issue is that ESPN has been killing Jameis since his college days and they continue to be more harsh on him than others but that is fine it’s not like the national media knows anything about the Tampa teams anyways. The sad part is that so many of our do called “fans” buy into the national narrative that our local lazy media also picks up. For example just now most fans are realizing that DJax was an issue but folks that actually pay attention for themselves knew that he was a divisive factor since about week two last year. I implore all fans to watch for themselves and don’t just parrot what ESPNs and Sports Illustrated honks tell you to believe. For instance if you listen to anything by the national media they will tell you that Jameis being here next year is still up in the air when most of us are well aware he is going to be here next year.

  81. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Bird- I read every article, and most but not all the comments, it gets too exhausting and depressing.
I have heard Jameis referred to as elite in certain aspects of his game but I don’t think anyone claims he is a top 5 QB right now.
Maybe they say he is going to be elite or a HOFer which is just speculation anyway, nobody knows what the future will hold.
Bottom line is he is a middle of the pack QB with a below average line and terrible run game. Throw in some really historical bad defenses and I have a hard time blaming a 21-32 record on Jameis. If anything he has won despite having a team around him and he should be regarded as a bright spot.

I get that some fans have written him off for offfield stuff but to say he is a bad QB is a lack of football intelligence IMO.

  82. lambchop Says:

  83. lambchop Says:

    SMDH, Delusional.

  84. Bird Says:

Yah. I don’t think terrible. I think average right now. I think he will be back. Maybe new regime gets going in right direction.

He does get a lot of criticism and I think cause this site has annointed him “America’s quarterback “ and People will blame everything and anything except Jameis. There a few that hate. But how can you hate when he is a buc. Most just frustrated with the hypocrisy more then anything.

For example. They call McCoy worthless and his numbers are average right nine . Not gonna disagree on average number

Yet Jameis gets the benefit of doubt every time. Always an excuse. Yet his numbers are average.

    Just saying

  85. Knack2Babbyyyy Says:

    @Ndog
The media selects specific people to continually use as a punching bag for clicks or views. These false narratives are spread to fit their personal agendas. For the past 5-6 years now, football fans have been consistently feed with negative criticism about Jameis Winston. Many of them choose to believe what they read and wrongfully call him a “Thug”. Both the national and local media are to blame for this.

  86. Kansas95Buc Says:

I’m late to the party but how about we get Winston a competent coach🤔

  87. D1 Says:

    Knack,

A couple things . I’ve heard Jameis called a few things but never a thug. Who in the local and or national media has called Jameis a thug ? I can’t believe ESPN or any national media outlets would use a word that is deemed offensive and racist. without significant backlash.
Being I recall no public confession and subsequentl apology by a news outlet I’m curious about who you’re accusing.

The other is, specifically what false narrative are you talking about? Yes, theres been reports from both national and local media that paint a negative portrait . But what’s the false narrative and why . What’s the purpose of creating it . Because ultimately there’s a goal. 99.9% of the time the goal is political. What’s the goal..

If you listen to anything by the national media they will tell you that Jameis being here next year is still up in the air when most of us are well aware he is going to be here next year.”

Very true, Ndog. I have noticed that.
Hopefully Jameis will get a chance to flourish with the next regime that comes in here. There has got to be a young offensive creative mind that sees all of the skills that #3 has, and realize he is more than capable of leading a team to the playoffs.

^^ Sorry Norm, that one above was from me. Apparently I had forgotten to log in.

@D1 I never said that the media has called him a “Thug”. I was referring to what the anti-Jameis mob repeatedly calls him.

If you want to pay a between the 20s superstar millions bring him back… just make sure you get another QB who can actually finish the job when we get inside the 20

As for the false narratives, Jameis has been portrayed as a sexist, thief (explained to Jim Harbaugh that Butcher let him take the crab legs for free), a bad leader, and overall a below-average human being.

Their purpose for creating these false narratives, besides for clicks or views, is to have a story of who they want to perceive as a failure. The ultimate story of the #1 overall pick in 2015 NFL Draft, being a complete and utter bust. That’s why you only hear about Jameis Winston in the national media after a horrible game, and rarely ever after one of his great games.

    BINGO!

Interesting how only 3 of those 11-QBs listed are heading to the playoffs. Probably means this statistic isn’t as valuable as we’re led to believe.
