DJax Celebrates “Best Play”

December 20th, 2018

Marks proud anniversary.

Joe just found this very interesting.

Yesterday, Bucs speedy wide receiver DeSean Jackson took to Twitter to celebrate what he called his “best play” of his career. What was that play?

It was a 65-yard yard punt return on Dec. 19, 2010 as time expired at The Meadowlands. The Eagles beat the Giants 38-31. It was the first walk-off punt return in NFL history.

Why does Joe find this interesting? Well, to hear Bucs coach Dirk Koetter, Jackson doesn’t return punts, though a lethal weapon, because he doesn’t want to.

Now this isn’t true all the time. Jackson did return punts earlier this year. It was an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown against the Steelers on Monday Night Football that had the Den of Depression rocking like few times the past decade.

But no! The immortal Isaiah Johnson was flagged for holding and the play was wiped off. No touchdown. To this day, Joe gets nauseous thinking of that.

Jackson was some kind of peeved after that play.

(It was an ugly night for Johnson who in the same game nearly killed himself when he slammed full-blast into the north wall behind the end zone, which to Joe’s knowledge was a first in the history of the Den of Depression.)

It was always a mystery to Joe how Koetter always raved (and still does) about Jackson’s explosive abilities yet he rarely had Jackson return punts despite the fact Jackson is such a dynamic game-changer.

The way the season has turned out, in a way, Joe doesn’t blame Jackson for not wanting to return punts. Why get killed when your defense (at the time) would cough up the six points you just scored in a matter of seconds?

Just another coaching blunder by Koetter ! He should have had Jackson out there all year ! All hands on deck ! Just another reason why he will be fired after the Atlanta game . He just is not Top man material !

We’ll probably never know what might’ve been. Special teams play can sometimes spark a team. Who knows?! Maybe if he’d been back there all year, we could’ve had shortened fields, heck maybe a TD or two.
Welcome to being a Bucs fan! Ugh!

  3. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

I thought his best play was when he, as an Eagle, intentionally dropped the ball a yard shy of the goal line before crossing into the end zone and the TD was called back.

That frikkkkking penalty by Isaiah…. ruined what was one of the coolest moments in Bucs history… DJax going old school with an 83 yard Punt Return TD when the team needed it most. The stadium (like my living room) was completely up for grabs. Magical.

Wish Winston was more accurate on hitting Jackson with the long ball like Fitz but since that won’t work …why not make DJax return punts .. Anything for explosive plays which makes the game more fun to watch ,,

His most interesting post came yesterday, when he said “Regardless of the circumstances ima go out wit a bang !!”. That sounds like a man who’s been told that he won’t be here next year. $10M in cap space saved. Jason Licht has swung and missed on a good amount of free agents, but him and Spytek have negotiated some incredible contracts.

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

DJax will be showcasing his talent to the rest of the NFL the next 2 games….hopefully Jameis can connect for either trade value or just that they can work together for next year

  8. Dewey Selmon Says:

Knack knows. The contracts has been team friendly with money upfront. Whoever comes in needs to keep Mike Greenberg, who the Glazers hopefully would veto that move. He’s been here a while and is a GM’s best friend.

My feelings have completely turned around on this.

I WANT DJAX back WITH JW next year, with our new coaching staff, and a fresh year to make it all work. He will still be under contract. He CLEARLY helps make our “O” go, whether he is catching bombs or not.

And who knows… what if he and JW actually do get the deep ball going, in addition?

    Lets bring him back.

  12. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

All you guys called me a fool for saying we need Djax.

    Told yah so!

  13. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs need more than DJax

They need help on ALL fronts

  14. joestang Says:

We never draft a punt or kick returner. We treat special teams something less than special. FIRE LICHT

We go back and forth sometimes, but I was wrong on this and you were 100% right.

YES… we need DJAX back, and for next year too. He makes Jameis better whether they are connecting on the deep ball or not, because he opens the whole field up.

    Bring him back.

approximately the last 50 times in a row the bucs have broken a big play on a punt return, the refs have produced a flag. if i were a WR who actually plays on offense, i wouldn’t want to waste my breath either

  17. Rod Munch Says:

A BS penalty that can literally be called on every punt and had no bearing on the outcome of the play. The NFL needs a traditional team like the Steelers in the playoffs over a 3-0 Bucs team that is just going to implode anyways. Serious the Steelers would be perhaps out of the playoffs if the refs don’t make that call. That’s how the NFL works.
