“You Can’t Hit Anybody”

December 1st, 2018

Somewhat sympathizes with Bucs defense.

The Bucs have a rotten defense. You know it and Joe knows it.

Of course, the defense, which was on pace to set 99-year NFL records for futility, has improved lately. Whether that is players buying into what defensive coordinator Mark Duffner is selling, or injuries leading the Bucs to a collection of players that play better together, that’s anyone’s guess.

It helped last week to play a team starting its third-string quarterback.

In a way, former Bucs guard and popular radio personality Ian Beckles feels bad for the defense. That’s because Beckles, speaking on his podcast “In the Trenches,” said teams cannot play defense any longer in the NFL.

“This is not the same game as it used to be, OK?” Beckles said. “It’s not. In college, in the pros, it’s not. I watched a buttload of college football last weekend. And I watched a bunch of NFL football as I normally do.

“You can’t play defense no more. You can’t hit anybody. You can’t strike anybody. You can’t put your hands on somebody. You can’t be physical with somebody. Can’t do it. So guys are just running around on the field willy-nilly.”

Joe cannot argue with what Beckles says here. Still, there are teams in the NFL that have have less defensive talent than the Bucs and manage to play respectable defense.

Joe thinks it is safe to suggest there will be a whole lot of new faces on the Bucs defense a year from now.

Ian Beckles is always on point with his commentary

  2. EA Says:

Can’t argue with that, I don’t know of a defense in the NFL this season that has been solid every week.

  3. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Gerald McCoy likes the rules because he doesn’t hit the quarterback

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Ha ha ha ha^

  5. Mike Johnson Says:

Beckles is right about one thing. Rules or not..The Bucs Defense Surely cannot hit or stop..anybody. Enough with the excuses of trying to justify a..Sorry A.. Team!!
The rules apply to all. I don’t see the teams at the top complaining. They..Just WIN now don’t they?

  6. “That guy” Says:

Ok, Ian obviously did not watch TB vs Pittsburgh in week 4.

I saw more helmet to helmet tackling then I have ever seen in a single game.
Not to mention the illegal hits after the whistle,and/or uncatchable passes ALL THE WAY to the bleachers.

The facts are there are more Pittsburgh fans then tb fans, thus the league cannot afford to have an 0-4 Pittsburgh Steelers. This translates to the referee‘s making selective penalty’ against our beloved buccaneers.

We have all seen this season after season, most notably the TD the bucs got as time expired, that was ruled an incomplete pass. That TD would have sent our bucs to the playoffs. Roger Goodell apologized the fallowing day for the mistake, but guess what, it was still chalked up as a L for the bucs.

My point being that this is a poor argument coming from Ian, who I normally have respect for.

  7. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

Well, some defenses in the NFL have figured it out.

    But not the Bucs.

    The difference is coaching.

  8. tmaxcon Says:

It all boils down to Obama’s dream of a gender neutral pansy ass society with hugs and trophies for. Absolutely pathetic but that is today’s America the once great country has been rendered soft

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I wanna see hitting…… That was the old NFL

Intimidation used to be a factor in the….. Nope…. Not anymore

Now offensive players run like gazelles in defensives cause of the rules now……

America’s NO#1 game has gotten soft….. Like every stupid Mellenial parent who thinks every child should get an award even though they didn’t do anything to earn it!!!!!

  10. Zwak Says:

We have the perfect defense for the for this new style of football. See we are way ahead of rest!

  11. stpetebucsfan Says:

I would love to watch guys here “running around like gazelles” out there with these large men who are “not permitted to hit”.

The biggest change I see is two fold…first the head…the league had NO CHOICE!!! You guys do understand that the concussion issue was getting ready to put the league out of business. They HAD to do something about head shots. That doesn’t bother me.

I’ve never enjoyed watching guys get concussed and develop CTE. Ironically however this has resulted in a new rash of injuries…see OJ…guys hitting lower mean more blown ankles and knees but those generally heal and at least you’re not a veg for the rest of your life!

The other major change is at the QB position where guys are no longer permitted to pile on and do any other number of things to hurt a QB. This was not for player safety as much as game safety. Would we rather watch Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady or their backups. The league believes correctly or incorrectly that the QB’s are the stars and personalities of the league and so they protect them.

The rest is just the usual Beckles hot air and hyperbole.

  12. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Funny that you showed a picture of Ian with a horse… haha. — Google it if you don’t know the story.

  13. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Ian Beckles got arrested in 2012 for drunkenly touching a horse:

Beckles, 45, was arrested about 11 p.m. near Jannus Live downtown. Police directing traffic as a crowd left the Citizen Cope concert spotted Beckles walking into traffic, the arrest report said.

An officer who asked him to return to the sidewalk observed Beckles was “highly intoxicated, swaying and slurring his speech,” the report said. Beckles “had difficulty speaking in complete sentences and had the strong smell of alcohol on his breath.”

When police told Beckles he could go after “educating him” on the importance of pedestrian traffic signals, Beckles slapped an officer on the back and said, “Okay, tough guy,” police said.

He continued to heckle officers until he was asked to return to the sidewalk, police said. Then Beckles moved toward an officer on horseback and was told to stay away.

He moved from that horse and toward another, police said.

Another officer began to yell, “Don’t touch the horse! Don’t touch the horse!”

Beckles touched the horse, police said.

  14. 1sparkybuc Says:

The vast majority of teams today would kick the snot out of Lombardi’s Packers. Very few from that era could even make a roster today. Players are bigger, faster, and significantly stronger now. They do more damage to each other. The rules had to be changed to limit the extent of the injuries. For the knuckleheads that want to blame Obama, equal opportunity and treatment is not the issue here. The NFL simply doesn’t want to fill up nursing homes with retired players before they’re eligible for social security.

  15. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ Thanks Anthem, I knew someone would find it. — Clearly Ian (and the police officer) had a pretty good sense of humor about it to follow up with a picture later.

  16. Howard Cosell Says:

This doesn’t seem to be a problem for the Cowboys D and Rod Marinelli

  17. Pickgrin Says:

“there are teams in the NFL that have less defensive talent than the Bucs and manage to play respectable defense.”

    Exactly Joe!

Howard Cosell – the Dallas reference is perfect. They played with real heart and passion the other night. Fought for every blade of err – turf. And without Sean Lee – again…

  18. Cobraboy Says:

    For once Beckles is correct.

  19. Jean Lafitte Says:

    LA 54 – KC 51

..and these are 2 of the better scoring defenses in the league. The difference is these offenses can outplay their own defenses. They pretty much make every possession count for points. We punt too much or turn it over.

  20. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Howard Cosell

Did you even watch that game? The refs flagged Dallas a lot and gave the Saints a chance to win it in the end. If it weren’t for that miraculous INT 2 inches off the turf they may have.

  21. Jean Lafitte Says:

Unless our defense is playing lights out against Carolina we can’t afford to have 5 punts like we did against SF. We will be playing catch-up …again

  22. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ It’s a sad state of affairs in today’s NFL that if you have 5 punts in a game, it is cause for concern.

  23. DBS Says:

They know the risk when the sign up to play this game. And they are paid millions for it. Now if they want to turn this into flag football than lower the pay. And stop charging the fans out the A$$ for it. Let them go play golf or tennis.

  24. Howard Cosell Says:

    @ Jean
Even if the Saints scored the Cowboy D still held Drew Brees to 17 points. As it worked out they held them to 10 points…..Drew Breesus and the Saints….let that sink in

  25. Howard Cosell Says:

…and they talked trash before the game….and they backed it up…..reminded Howard of Sapp and the glory days

  26. Howard Cosell Says:

“They’re going to have to match our intensity,” Lawrence said via Jon Machota of The Dallas Morning News. “[Expletive], for 60 minutes straight, if you hit a [expletive] in the mouth and then they ain’t doing what they’re regularly doing, putting up 50 points, they start to get a little distressed. Now, you got them where you want them at, and then you [expletive] choke their ass out.”

  27. Howard Cosell Says:

That kind of winning mentality would never fly on a PC Glazer run team Lol. Say what you want about Jerr but he loves his Cowboys

  28. JimmyJack Says:

Howard, the Cowboys are building a Super Bowl contender.

You watch out for them next year and the following decade.

  29. JIMMY T Says:

    BUCANTHEM
Beckles is spot on with his commentary? Really? I think not! His prep work for that crappy show w Diaz is MAYBE reads one page of the TBT sports page! Those two r beyond clueless!

  30. Alanbucsfan Says:

Both Dallas and New Orleans were impressive on D because they
    1 contained the run game
    2 pressured qb
3 played receivers tight and corners were physical

Smith’s defense did none of that and it will take another training camp with a head coach who believes in this to be effective

  31. richbucsfan Says:

The NFL is vulnerable, incredibly wealthy yet vulnerable. They are not what they used to be…stupid rules changes, a lett-wing political agenda, half-filled stadiums, to name a few. If one of these new leagues puts on a great show and display of old time football where they actually know what a catch is, the NFL will feel the pain of real competition. But, that is all yet to be seen. Time will tell.

  32. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

    Don’t touch the horse
    Beckles touched the horse
    Hahaha

  33. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

All you guys complaining about the game getting soft are the same guys that have never had a concussion or had the wind knocked out of you over and over again until it causes you lifetime disability.

Must be nice sitting on your couch watching someone else ruin their health for your entertainment

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Exactly Bucs fan.

  35. Rich Says:

just wondering, is that the horse that Beckles punched and got arrested? Worst decision ever by WDAE to bring him back!!!!!

  36. richbucsfan Says:

Rich, I agree with you. The lack of preparation for their show by both Ron & Ian is shocking.

  37. richbucsfan Says:

I posted that the NFL is losing TV revenue and it never made it to the Board. I provided Bloomberg Business site to document my words because so many of you require documentation. Sorry about that, but it was a good article. Too bad the censor deleted it.

  38. uckinator Says:

tmaxcom : I know I’m painting with a wide brush here, but softness in our society started with the ability of women voting in the 1910’s. Women, by nature are communal. (I will add I’ve been happily married for 43 years. ) Heck my wife voted for Al Gore because of his kiss on his wife at the Democratic Nat’l Convention. Go figure. Sooo, what’s happened to the greatest nation in the last 50 years ? Slow march to socialism (Great, until you run out of other peoples money. If I have to explain that to you, you are a product of our educational system.) This is where globalism (Kum-bi-yah) started (Angela Merkal anyone. Allowing a million of muslums into Germany. With their birthrate, you won’t recognize that country in 2 generations. This shouldn’t be controversal, it’s a fact. I’m not saying all females are this way, but the majority are. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

  39. uckinator Says:

Looks like my post to tmaxcom on women voting changed our society since the 1910’s crossed the lines on JBFi

  40. uckinator Says:

tmaxcon – You must be radioactive. Both posts to you got erased.

  41. DB55 Says:

    Ian,

Jaylon Smith cowboys linebacker called and said you should check in on Alvin Kamara.

  42. JimmyJack Says:

Diaz is a creep & those 2 new guys were a disgrace this Friday. I think 620 needs to strip their orginazation after this season like the Bucs.

We have some of the most lame Sports Radio in the nation.

  43. JimmyJack Says:

I’ll take Ron and T Krast. But they do some really annoying bits. Good with sports but not funny or enjoyable. I’ll give them hope like my Bucs and believe they can improve based on heart and hard work.

  44. Curse of Gruden Says:

    Tmax’s comment is spot on.

  45. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Luv ya JimmyJack, but disagree about Pat & Aaron on 620Wdae. Been listening to the station since day 1, and think those 2 bring a fresh approach that is alot of fun to listen to. Agree with ya on Ronnie & TKras being great.

  46. Rod Munch Says:

The defense got roasted by the Giants, then played well against a 5th string QB with no starting WR’s that had to fly all the way across the country to play an early game…

I’m guessing the defense didn’t magically suddenly figure it out.

  47. El Buco Realisto Says:

The local media is tripping all over themselves to try and prove the defense is better!!!!!!! But they will be exposed!!!!!! They can’t write enough stories this week, but soon will go silent!!!!!!!! they won’t say it is the soft part of the schedule!!!!!!! Its a shame that we cannot get honest football coverage in this town, and instead all we get is how right their opinion is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  48. MTM Says:

The Bucs can’t tackle for squat. I’ve seen so many plays in which the defense is chasing a RB running parallel with him and no effort to cut off him off. Its baffling. I never see this on any other defense.

  49. martinii Says:

    tmaxcon:

Obviously you have never seen a B-52 strike or watched the New Jersey level a enemy position with one broadside. If you think this country has been reduced to a bunch of weak pansies, go on ops with a Marine Corp Fire Team or look up the destructive power of one Nuclear Submarine.

  50. Evo2706 Says:

Joe’s. Did beckles bully you as a kid? Did he play on a bad team that upset one of yours and you lost money? From trying to entice fans to flood his email in outrage to just outright shots taken at him with your pics. I have to wonder what did the guy do to you? The pic with the horse and the subject of the post. I must say Joe’s. You may have the best bucs coverage around. But your lack of class is really starting to show. And best coverage or not. These little subliminal shots are very cowardly. And it’s hard to keep reading when you guys are cowards like that.
