Bucs Not Busy With Coaching Search?

December 30th, 2018

“Look Jason, we’re all busy during the holiday season. When we get around to making some moves, we’ll keep you in the loop.”

Is there really a chance embattled Dirk Koetter could survive as Bucs head coach, even with a loss today, which would give him 22 through the past two seasons?

Last week, Albert Breer of theMMQB.com, who is very well plugged in within NFL circles, suggested Koetter may survive because of a perceived blah list of coaching candidates and because Team Glazer prefers splash when hiring a coach.

Joe has no idea if that is true or not (hiring Koetter wasn’t exactly a splashy move) but Breer is right in that Team Glazer has shown it likes to steal the thunder of the NFL when it making a coaching hire.

So Joe found the following from Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times a bit interesting. Per Stroud, there’s not a whole lot of whispering in NFL backchannels of Team Glazer talking to potential candidates.

The Glazers are very tight-lipped about the operation of their team. But among the teams likely to make changes, they are believed to have been the least active in exploring available candidates

If true, the only thing that would add up here is if Team Glazer already has its man and is just waiting for the season to finish today, then break the news to Koetter tomorrow and later in the week introduce the new Bucs head coach.

That’s what happened when Lovie Smith was hired. Team Glazer was talking to Lovie before Columbus Day (if you believe some) and when the season neared a close, the search was over.

Remember, two days before the final game of the season last year, Team Glazer told Koetter he was going to be retained. As Joe is writing this here post late Saturday night, there is no known message from Team Glazer that Koetter will be brought back (or sent packing).

Man, if only some plugged in journalists could investigate and get to the bottom of this…

  2. Todd Says:

If they’ve decided on a team president who will make the hiring decision, why WOULD they be active? Also, the season needs to be over and ALL the coaching candidates KNOWN before getting incredibly active.

Or, maybe it’s already Bruce Arians.

All I can say is that if it’s still Dirk, I personally won’t give a crap about the Bucs in 2019. They will have lost me indefinitely. I’ll totally check out of all things Bucs.

  3. EA Says:

If Dirk is retained as the head coach (should have been canned last year) I’ve lost all hope on this team. The list of boneheded moves goes on for miles, the guy is just NOT head coaching material.

  4. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

    Lazy beta male glazers

    No wonder this team stinks

  5. Not there yet Says:

If they keep Koetter I won’t waste my time getting frustrated about a failed franchise, I’ll be taking a year off

  6. wombat Says:

What if…. Rojo was a half decent running back? What If Roberto was the greatest kicker to enter the NFL? What if Noah Spence was getting sacks at a rate like JPP? What if Sweezey played like he was paid and ppl were screaming for the talented back up Benanoch to play? What if Jameis played like Melhommes in his 2nd yr plus….What if Dirk Koetter had the offense in the top 5 of every category like he should… oh wait, that DID happen…..

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

Patience Coach Hoppers….L&K&Jamyth all get one more year…..like it or not it is the ONLY choice…unless all 3 go….simply cannot bring Jameis back on his 5th year option with a new coach and offense…..well unless we chip in for a new keyboard for Ndog and the Jameis posse

  8. Pete I Says:

    Dirk = 19–28
    Licht = 27-52
    Winston = 21-32
    Since Malcolm’s Stroke = 77 – 130

Oh good more of the same…

  9. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

A SPLASH MOVE? When was the last time Da Boys made a ONE AND ONLY splash move? Gruden. And daddy did that.

  10. mdsbuc Says:

There have been 10 coaching changes in Buc history. How well have most of those worked out? 70% of those changes, following all of the excitement generated by those changes, have been busts. The only successful changes have been Dungy, Gruden, and (cough, cough) Koetter.

That’s right, Koetter. He’s brought us the best offense we have ever seen here in Tampa. Yeah, his head coaching has been circumspect, but he’s learning. In fact, he is just 4 games under .500, with a winning percentage of .438. Only Dungy and Gruden have better winning percentages and no one else is close.

How many more wins would Koetter have had if he’d had a decent defense? How many more wins would he have had if he’d had a kicker worth a damn?

Our current kicker is at least “fair.” If we could land better, great; but at least he’s not part of the putrid parade of kickers that we have seen here the past few years.

I like what has been happening on defense since the firing of Mike Smith. I say give Duffner a year to see what he can do.

Find a better special teams coach.

Find a better offensive line coach.
Draft hard for offensive line. RB is not the problem.
The 0-line is the weakest area of the team.

Find a veteran replacement for Grimes and let the young guys in the secondary continue to develop.

Licht? As far as I’m concerned, let him go…

  11. Hodad Says:

Maybe they do it right this time, and hire the G.M. first who then finds the H.C.. This regime can’t even find a R.G.. Think of it. For two years we’ve been alternating R.G.’s, without being able to settle on one. Last year it was Smith, Benenoch, this year it’s been Smith, Benenoch, Cappa, result failure. If your G.M., H.C., can’t even find, and coach up a R.G., they’re totally incompetent. They both need to go.

  12. Bucnjim Says:

The last move remotely considered a splash coaching move was 5 coaches ago giving up first round picks and cash to the Raiders. The last four have been extreme crap shoots when you think about it. First a coach who was barely a coordinator before taking over. Second a coach who didn’t even have a winning record in college. Third a complete retread who had no business being back since the game LONG passed him by. Then fourth an offensive Coordinator who could rack up yards but had Zero idea about defense or how to possibly score from the red Zone.

  13. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Wouldn’t shock me at all if the Glazer’s didn’t do the completely obviously correct thing and fire both Dirk Koetter and Jason Licht this offseason.

After-all that’s exactly what they should have done last season and they didn’t do it then either.

Rest Assured that if Dork is still the HC in 2019, we’ll start the season 3-5 for the 4th straight time.

Rest Assured that if Jason Licht is still the GM in 2019, he’ll pass over several impact free agents, gamble on a few aging and injury prone players, and he’ll pass up on studs in the 2nd round in favor of meh players.

  14. Buc'd Up Says:

Dirk knows X’s and O’s. All coaches at this level do. I personally don’t believe he has the “IT”factor in the moment. He appears lost or defeated at points in front of us on tv. His press conferences He has admitted he doesn’t know how to fix it. I think he is a good players coach, but that’s like saying I’m a good kid’s dad. I’m their dad, not their friend. Last night Dabo said during an interview that he benched his qb because it was best for the team. That’s his job. Dirk seems to hold onto things too long until outside pressure makes him change. We need proactive ,not reactive coaching.

  15. AlteredEgo Says:

Yo intern…get off your social media and release my posts from the cooler

  16. Stu Says:

    Arians?

  17. PSLBob Says:

Better have someone inked to a contract before you fire anyone!

  18. JJV Says:

I have been saying it for a long time. Koetter , Licht, Winston will return in 2019. Like it or not.

  19. Waterboy Says:

Dirk Diggler might be there guy.

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

If our Bucs keep Koetter and Licht? They get what they rightfully deserve….
More time in the dungeon and a history of..mediocrity.

  21. Owlykat Says:

Hopefully Licht and Buckner have convinced Arians to be our next Buc’s Coach and the Boy Owners are keeping it close to the vest so they can make a BIG SPLASH news conference right after announcing they have fired Clueless Koetter (“If I knew how to fix it I would already have”) and Inept Warhop (“D. Smith is one of the three Top Tackles in the NFL”). HooRay!!!

  22. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

If i remember right (and maybe i have forgotten)….

The Jon Gruden hiring came out of absolute NOWHERE.
NONE of us saw that coming.

They are quiet now, but maybe they have something up their sleeves.

  23. Troy Says:

Already have the replacement hired is my guess. That worries me somewhat because it takes some quality coaches off the board.

  24. BrianBucs Says:

Maybe it’s because the Glazers already have somebody in mind

  25. #1bucfan Says:

IF YOUR A TRUE BUCS FAN IT WONT MATTER WHO IS COACHING OR WHO IS THE QB OR EVEN THE GM YOUR GOING TO ROOT FOR YOUR DAM TEAM. so sick of hearing ppl comment an say if they don’t do this or if they don’t do that I’m done with then. If that’s how you feel great. Then don’t watch or be a fan we don’t need you. I’m going to root for my team if we are 0-16 or 16-0 FAKE FANS GET OUT OF HERE

  26. gotbbucs Says:

Or they’ll sit on their hands for three weeks and then fire everybody like they did with Gruden and Allen.

  27. gotbbucs Says:

…and then they’ll name the front desk receptionist at One Buc the GM and a Quality Control Coach will become the Head Coach.

  28. #1bucfan Says:

TPD Gruden wasn’t hired we traded our future for him. Idk how many years he had on his contract wen we traded for him so then maybe after we traded for him we resigned him

  29. Gambelero Says:

A new coach hire means hope, higher expectations, a hearty appetite for season tickets, a hankering for happy times, a honeymoon between the team and the local press. For ownership changing coaches will always be the default answer to not meeting expectations, even when the new coach isn’t really any better than the old coach.

  30. 1Gr8Buc Says:

Heres to hoping they have already agreed with Bruce Arians to come in, and Buckner gets promoted to DC. I think them letting it out that we are bringing Jameis back next year shows that they may already have their HC picked out and he said he wanted the chance to fix Jameis.

  31. louden Says:

    Hell,
Koetter and Mike Smith couldn´t win the big thing with a very good Falcons Team back then…

I´m not totally against Koetter, but the overall he and GM Licht didn´t build a good team, but they created a Roster that is lacking at serveral positions and it´s a mess… it was a mess when they came in – and they didn´t right the ship..

Licht is a total Looser of an GM – he should get fired for sure..
Koetter at least showed he can coach at a high level (Time with Falcons, an actual good team back then; and good offense here in Tampa..)

  32. DanBucsFan Says:

Hopefully they keep Dirk, then some of these ” fans ” who say they will not follow team if he stays REALLY jump ship. Then we can clean up the fan base and eliminate some of the fair weather fans. I will NEVER jump ship and will stay loyal to this team forever. Let’s instead add some secondary impact players and watch our team win some of these close games. GO BUCS !! WORST TO FIRST NEXT YEAR. DIVISION CHAMPS NEXT YEAR !!

  33. Bradley Clement Says:

    They already have their guy
