Bucs Change “Known Internally”

December 27th, 2018

If this report is to be believed, the decision whether to hire a new Bucs coach for 2019 has already been made.

From the fingertips of heavy-metal headbanging Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, he typed about various teams that likely will have coaching changes. He listed the Bucs among them.

However, La Canfora suggests Team Glazer has already reached a decision. That they won’t have to wait until the end of Sunday’s game, sit around a conference table and draw straws to determine who breaks the news to current Bucs coach Dirk Koetter.

The Cardinals, Broncos, Jets and Bucs have known, internally, for a while now that change is inevitable for 2019.

This intrigues Joe. Wish Joe knew how long “for a while now” is.

When the Bucs struggled out of the gate in 2013, and the team seemed to spiral out of control under the boot of former Bucs commander Greg Schiano with the MRSA mess and the leaky, sleepy Josh Freeman nonsense swirling around One Buc Palace, Joe heard Team Glazer began talking with Lovie Smith about replacing Schiano as early as October 2013.

Answers on Koetter are coming next week.

fire, hire, fire, re-hire, fire, fire fire, fire. It is a never-ending vortex. It sucks because everytime we start over we fall back. It never ends. never freaking ends. I mean 43 years(-5 years of success that I still have to pinch myself, did we really win a championship) of failure, embaressment, and a bad product after bad product, after bad product.

It just never ends. How can NFL football in the whole state of FL be that bad?

  3. Etzel Says:

    I mean… I still don’t know how Dirk even got a third season…

  4. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

This just in….Water is wet, the sun is hot, Caleb Benenoch can’t block, oh and Dirk is done.

  5. LakeLand Says:

  6. snookman Says:

I don’t know why all of you clowns are excited to see a Bucs coach get fired. What makes you think the next 5 coaches are going to be any good? I mean lets go back in time to when Raheem Morris was fired……..Look at us now………we are in the exact same place nearly a decade later. This Franchise is a disaster. The worst in all sports. 37% winning PCT. Garbage.

  8. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Fireeeee Licht too!! Give the Bucs fans a victory! Fireeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Licht!

  9. Troy Says:

Just based on Dirk’s pressers the last 3 weeks, I think he was told after the week 14 loss to the Aints that he wouldn’t be retained. Hopefully, the Glazers are interviewing because the Packers already are.

  11. Jim D Says:

The Glazers remain the common denominator. Nothing improves while they run the team. That they may have already selected the next move sends chills down my spine,

  12. Stevbobucsfan Says:

Again I like Koetter but the team has regress on offense. This team need an injection of energy. The stands have shown this. The stands have been half empty for the pass 4 home games, in a 80,000 something stadium that’s more than 40,000 x 4 games of empty seats. .I think the Glazers have to make some kind of a move

  13. adam from ny Says:

yesterdays dirk presser was hilarious again…dirk vs jenna continues on…she busted his chops with “what if” questions and he kept his cool while freaking kinda out at the same time – as if his wife was busting his chops…she threw 2-3 hair brainers at him…these two are funny to hone in on…she brings sorta like a woman’s perspective of jargon to the presser and dirk wants to bounce off the ceiling…

  14. Not there yet Says:

Only the media cares when the decision was made. All fans care about is when the change happens. Making your mind up about the obvious doesn’t matter until you act on it. Just hire the right guy and if you do it will be the first time since taking over the team you got it right

  15. adam from ny Says:

jenna is in a power position since dirk is kinda lame duck now…so he is sort of defensive with her…she really can ice him next week if she wants to with a question like this at his final post game presser…

“how does it feel to be doing your last post game presser dirk?…are you going to miss us local media pundits?”

I would honestly give Monken a shot at it. Fire Warhol and I’m not sure about dufner. Fire special teams as well

  18. Buc believer Says:

@Buc em up…. Dude the Glazers and the Bucs just CANT afford to “give someone a shot” c’mon man!!! 11 freeking YEARS of NON PLAYOFFS!!! I’m not giving someone a shot!

  19. Bird Says:

The glazers boys pictured above are losing every ounce of stret cred these days. Why do they always pick the wrong guy. (Unlike their father )

The product on the field is crap.

And my season tickets are thru the roof and I have never been offered even a free parking pass or anything ?

  20. Doolnutts Says:

snookman — you are spot on. I have ZERO idea what everyone here is excited about? Do you really think a good coach is going to come here? Remember when CHIP KELLY turned us down hahaha. Late Glazer senior hired dungy and Gruden. Two of our best coaches ever. His kids, on the other hand, seem to totally lack this ability. We are screwed until they hire someone to help them. I will bet money their next hire is also a total disaster. Well fire, turn the roster over, fail, restart in about 2-3 years. Cheers everyone.

  21. OneBucPerson Says:

Hot damn, it never ceases to amaze me just how incompetent the Glazer boys are at running the show. Mr. Malcolm is probably rolling over in his grave watching them make a mockery of the franchise he helped lead to a title. Here’s hoping that after the season lets out that they do the smart thing (for once) and hire either Tony Dungy or Derrick Brooks as the EVP of Football Operations and let someone who actually knows what he’s doing lead this organization.

  22. down in the dirt Doug Says:

Maybe the person they may be ready to hire is a new team president.NOW THAT WOULD BE A GREAT NEW YEARS GIFT TO US LONG SUFFERING FANS.

  23. AlteredEgo Says:

If the is a change with HC…Jamesi will be gone too

  24. Bosch Says:

You are right Jim D. The Glazers are the common denominator. And will remain the common denominator until the fans take control of this matter.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Alaskan … you win the prize this morning (and yes, “Dirk is done”). But unless Lapdog Licht goes with him, we’ll just see more of the same. And like Jim D said “The Glazers remain the common denominator.”

Daddy Malcolm was a shrewd businessman and Bucs owner … buying the club for $192 mil in 1995 from Hugh Culverhouse & hiring Tony Dungy then Jon Gruden as HCs are some pretty shrewd moves that showed a commitment to winning. But since his stroke in 2006 looks like ‘the sons’ have been running the Bucs show, and their track record isn’t nearly as impressive (‘promote from within’ with Domenick & Raheem didn’t work out that well; neither has the Schiano, Lovie, Licht & Koetter decisions obviously). ‘The sons’ don’t seem to have that same ‘vision’ that Daddy Malcolm had.

So that’s 2 GM & 4 HC hires in the past 10 years for ‘the Boyz’, none of which have exactly set the sports world on fire (although they do seem to have turned the Bucs into a dumpster fire). So pardon me Joe if I don’t have a whole bunch of faith in them making the right decision THIS TIME. The ONLY decision I want to see from them is to hire the best ‘football mind’ on the planet and give him marching orders to ‘FIX THIS MESS ASAP’ … then support him 100%.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Here’s how stupid fans can be. Mike Tomlin has been a head coach for twelve years. In that time he has never had a losing season.

And yet Steelers fans want him gone.

If the Steelers are dumb enough to give the fans what they want, the Glazers need to do whatever it takes to hire him.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Defense Rules, the Glazer boys ran things all along. It was their idea to buy the team. They chose Dungy and Gruden.

All Malcolm did was negotiate the original purchase deal.

  28. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai, I’m not buying that. I don’t have any insider information like you apparently do, but I’ve read too many other things that say otherwise.

  30. Bob in Valrico Says:

Dirk will walk the plank. Some things are on him.Whats not on him is the poor drafting and free agency selection of Jason Licht . One of a coaches needs is a roster that has quality players willing to put the extra work in to execute the plays. Coaches can teach fundamentals but it is up to the players stop turnovers and penalties. We need players that will not only play hard, but have enough
internal discipline to try to perfect both their craft and their personal performance for the good of the team.
Every week our games have mistakes and penalties that lead to losses. As long as we have these type of players we will have below average results. Our record shows we don’t have all 53 trying to be the absolute best they can be.
In a lot of ways Licht is responsible for that,he has not selected enough mentally strong players.

  31. zzbuc Says:

I consider that the real problem on the BUCS is not Koetter, is about the owners the GM and a roster, and also I am not atracted on what the coach´s market is actually. I am far from being a Koetter´s super fan because he makes mistakes but I think whoever is in his place will have the same problems he has…no running game, no secondary and very errant QB´s…..I am not atracted to Mccarthy neither Pagno, neither Caldwell neither Haurbagh and so on……But I have a completely different opinion if Tomlin is available, something I find very difficult to belive…….Thats a perosn who I think he can rebuild and turn around this franchise really quickly

  32. TDTB Says:

You don’t fire unless you can hire better. A better GM is possible. A better HC is questionable. If you can hire Harbaugh or Peterson, you fire Dirk. If not, hire Richards as DC and overpay him to take the “promotion”. It gives a year to evaluate new GM Koetter (under new GM) and Richards. I’d fire Warhop too. They’d have to overpay for his replacement too since the tour of duty looks suspect. Maybe there’s a good candidate in Richards’ past that could be hired to rear transition should that be the path taken.

  33. 813bucboi Says:

i hope they’ve been targeting kris richard!!!!

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#ADIOSDIRK!!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  34. Playaction Says:

Although they may have made a decision already, most of the top candidates are in the playoff chase. So they can’t speak with them until their season ends.

  35. Jim Says:

If the Glazer’s are the common denominator, here’s two more: Fan Base and Community.

  36. mickman Says:

I am going to laugh when everyone is wrong. Dirk is staying one more year!

  37. mickman Says:

Hey Jimsays: not since 2002/2003 one common denominator is the fan base stinks. 50% of them have always been bandwagon jumpers. Glaciers will. or make a decision based on fans like you think. i would believ at some point they will make a case to move out of Tampa should it continue and make millions and Tampa will have no team.

  38. mickman Says:

813bucboi: Funny everyone said the say of Dunghy.

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Defense Rules Says
“Bonzai, I’m not buying that. I don’t have any insider information like you apparently do, but I’ve read too many other things that say otherwise.”

No insider information required. When they first bought the team, they said it publicly. And anything you have read that speaks against their own words is nonfactual in nature.

As the story goes, the Glazer boys had convinced Malcolm to buy a team. They scouted the teams to do a sale, and missed out on several opportunities before they finally got the Buccaneers. Malcolm’s involvement after the purchase was guided by the boys, who kept him up to date on matters. The team was in his name at the time, and he liked to get to know the staff, but in all other matters, it was the Glazer boys who made the decisions and Malcolm backed those decisions.

I realize that since then, it has become popular to blame the Glazer boys for everything, but the simple truth is that they made the recommendations to their father all along, and he always followed their lead.

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

But the truth is that it really doesn’t matter. What’s done is done either way and it doesn’t really matter who is right or wrong.

  41. Mike Johnson Says:

Joe..I cringe at the thought of the Glazers making all of our coaching and GM selections. Its almost like..Ohhh Boyyy wonder what losers there are gonna
trout out before us now. I have No Faith in them whatsoever. I’m sure they are Outstanding in accounting..at counting their profits. But they suck when it comes to football know how and team operations. And all of us fans know it and You do too! I know some teams don’t need one. But its time for the Glazers to hire a head of Football Operations and leave the football mechanics to knowledgeable personnel. If not, I can guarantee all of you..we will continue to be at the..Wailing wall year after year..headed towards being ..The Wost Team in NFL History!!..Ever.

  42. Bucsfanman Says:

There’s not a lot of faith in these guys to make the right hire, rightfully so.

As such, I have devised a statistical analysis based on chance. After all, even a broke clock is right twice a day! You have to play the percentages. Based on my ultra-scientific method, which has been trademarked, it is “more than likely” that our next coach will bring us back to the playoffs within 3 years.

    Your welcome!

  43. SOEbuc Says:

So who is it? They should of fired Koetter a month ago and made Monken interam for the rest of the season to see what he’s got. Just don’t hope they bring one of these guys that is also on the guarantee list, but it’s the Glazer kids you never know. They have to at least wipe out the entire coaching staff and restart there.

  44. TOM Says:

The Glazers need to fire Licht before Koetter or at least at the same time. Firing Koetter & keeping Licht will not accomplish anything except more losing.

  45. Howard Cosell Says:

Glazers are the worst owners in professional sports.

One commenter raised a good point:
In addition to the facts that they’re aloof, insulated,
sensitive to criticism and don’t care about winning
    there’s too many of them:
Malcolm had 6 siblings and 6 children.
Howard guarantees that every one of them wants a say
and a profit from the Bucs. Howard further guarantees
that none of them give two spits about winning

  46. Howard Cosell Says:

Take the epic Rooney family for example….or the epic Kraft family:
Howard guarantees that in these organizations only 1 or 2 family members run the sports franchise

  47. Howard Cosell Says:

Howard would guess that Kraft family members trust each other

  48. AlteredEgo Says:

It is not Koetter…it is the lack of talent followed by the man responsible for the lack of talent,Licht, and finally Jamyth who’s 4 years in the NFL is like Forest

I COMPLETELY agree with everything you just said. I was just about to post the same thing. It all begins and ends with the three incompetent f$%ktards known as the Glazers, who are ASTONISHINGLY clueless when it comes to knowing how to build a constant contender/championship caliber team/organization. I have ZERO confidence in their decision making and expect them to once again make a piss poor decision when it comes to turning around this sinking ship/organization.

Unfortunately it’s the fans who will continue to walk the plank………IT’S A BUCS LIFE! Yaaaayyyy!

  50. MTM Says:

Clean house so we can learn to despise a new set of coaches.

  51. Buc4evr Says:

Whatever the Glazers do, they need to get rid of Jason Gump before the next draft. He is at least 90 percent of the problem.

  52. SOEbuc Says:

For everyone that thinks Licht will be fired (I think he has a chance to stay), you will hopefully find out the same day Koetter hits the road next week. Glazer kids hopefully have been scouting management and talking to people since the end of last year if they figured this was the way they might go after another 5-11 or 6-10 season. Jameis suspended the first three games and they sure as hell weren’t expecting Fitzmagic.

  53. SOEbuc Says:

I don’t think the Glazers want this team. They put a sh!t ton into the stadium and OBP and now they’re throwing out free tickets. Trying to find a winning HC to up the profit of the sale and at least get someone to option Tampa Bay. They don’t seem like they are going all the way to try to put together a Super Bowl winning team. And I they have to know they’re not good at it if they are because the numbers do show when it comes to that.

  54. Joe Says:

I don’t think the Glazers want this team. They put a sh!t ton into the stadium and OBP and now they’re throwing out free tickets.

If you are curious, Google “NFL TV revenues” and you will find out if Team Glazer wants to keep the Bucs.

Mind you that is *only* game broadcast TV revenues. Just one stream. But one helluva river.

(There is a reason why David Tepper paid $2.2 billion to buy the Stinking Panthers.)

  55. stpetebucsfan Says:

Whatever they do I hope they’ve completed it all by Monday. Don’t want any coaches or players left to dangle. I realize the player moves will have to wait until the new regime decides but if Koetter and Licht are gone just let them go after the game.
