Bad Jameis “Body Language” With A “Flat” Offensive Line

December 9th, 2018

“Dancing around”

Joe remains stunned how a quarterback in Year 4 working in the same system could look as shaky as America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, did in the second half today.

A former Buccaneer has weighed in on the subject, as did Dirk Koetter.

Former Bucs tight end Dave Moore, the game analyst on the Buccaneers Radio Network, talked about Jameis’ bad “body language” in the second half against the Saints.

Moore says that after 15 years as a player and many years in the broadcast booth he can read body language of a player well. He said today Jameis transformed into a quarterback that didn’t understand where he was going with the football or the coverage in front of him.

“A lot of dancing around, a lot of [being] nervous how he was going to escape the rush,” Moore said, describing Jameis as indecisive.

Jameis, he believes, was doing too much reading of the Saints defense on the fly, versus envisioning and having his answers before the play. “You gotta kind of have a plan” in your head. ‘How am I getting rid of the football so I’m not taking negative plays,” Moore said of Jameis.

Dirk Koetter spoke after the game and was adamant that the Saints defense changed little in the second half and Jameis’ struggles were mostly about getting rattled.

“They didn’t do that much different [on rushing the pass rusher]; He’s going to get a little antsy back there when you’re getting hit that often,” Koetter said.

“We got dominated on offense in the second half, which led to our defense being on the field too long.”

Moore wagged a finger at the offensive line for coming out “flat” in the second half.

Wherever you place the blame, Joe can’t excuse a veteran offense falling apart like the Bucs did. It should never look that bad. This isn’t a Saints defense that’s going to set any records for greatness.

Protect the ball at all costs…

Whatever you do you can’t turn the ball over…

    Don’t take chances…

Gee, I wonder why Jameis wasn’t trying to do more?

Who is it that wants to re-sign Donovan Quicksand Smith?

  4. NPRSageBoy Says:

Face it JayMiss lovers; he’s NOT the franchise QB all you wet dreamers fantasize over.

Maybe another offense might fit him better, but right now he’s a below average QB certainly not what was expected from the overall #1 pick four years ago.

I know this isn’t what a lot of you want to hear, but Mariota is headed to the playoffs for a second year in a row.

  5. Troy Says:

I’m telling you right now, Koetter is overrated as an offensive guru. Our offense is good despite him not because of him. I’ll argue that with anyone. Atlanta got better when he left.

  6. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

    Rod-

Jamie’s only completed 18 of 38 pass attempts. That’s trash Rod

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

Jameis blew this game…he can not hit anything but a stationary target…all that pocket scrambling is because he is waiting for a WR to come to a stop….time to draft a real modern ear NFL QB…

  8. Geno Says:

Worst coaching decision today was Bill Belicheck. Miami has the ball with 3 seconds left and own their own 31. So clearly outside the Hail Mary range. Dummy Belicheck decides to put Rob Gronkowski on the field as a defender. Miami does the typical hook and ladder type of lateral scramble. You should see poor injured Gronk trying to run on that play. Miami scores with no time remaining and wins by 1. That coaching was worse than anything Dirk did today.

By the way, the worst quarterback decision today was by Tom Brady. New England has the lead as the 1st half is winding down. He is on the Miami 3 yard line with no time outs left. There is 14 seconds left and it is 3rd down. Tom Brady decides he does not have to make a quick decision and actually gets sacked with about 8 seconds left. How dumb is Brady to take all that time and then take the sack. No points by New England. No field goal. Did I mention they lost the game by 1. Of course if I wanted to put an unsubstantiated spin on something, I also might say that the only reason that Brady made that bad play is because he has not running game, or no offensive line, or a coach who does not know how to coach him up.

Oh by the way, they have this kicker named Gostkowski. He missed an extra point. Did I mention that New England lost by 1.

These guys are human and they all make mistakes. The Buc’s worst mistake today was that blocked punt. Just horrible. Not as bad as the winning touchdown by Miami. Equally as bad as the bad decision by Brady. Much worse than the missed extra point.

NPR and Altered, you wouldn’t know winning football if it shot you in the face… at which I would sip on my tea and keep on walking. I didn’t see nuffin

  10. Rod Munch Says:

7423 – Yeah, throw the ball away, don’t force anything, eat the sack, don’t ever throw into traffic…

This is what the Winston haters say is the key to success…

No, your key to success is letting a gunslinger throw the ball and make impossible plays and then have all the dullards on TV go “he shouldn’t have made that pass, but he got it there”.

Winston is “dancing” because he’s told NOT to force the ball unless guys are wide open – and guess what, people don’t get wide open in the NFL. So he plays it safe, doesn’t turn the ball over, and yet you people complain anyways.

What you want, what you always wanted, is Mike Glennon.

  11. SilverBuc Says:

Rod Munch throwing down the truth as usual

  12. dmatt Says:

Over the past four years, Jameis has played his his best football in the no huddle offense. I have no idea y koetter don’t just let the no huddle run early in each game vs running the no huddle in the 4th quarter within the 4 minute range. Can u believe his creative SPayton would be with our offense if he was the coach. He use BoBo Wilson’s skill sets. He would probably use 6’9 Demar Dotson as a tightend on a pass play near the goal line. And I’m sure he’ll find some creative use for RoJo. That’s what a good coach would do.Koetter is a dud.

  13. YucLife Says:

I have a bad feeling Winston is battling something internally or has a tape on his mind because not only is his play erratic, but he’s had a guilty look on his face for months ? Sadly I wish it wasn’t true, but nothing would surprise me this cat

LOLZ bro. Magoo a gunslinger ahahahahahah. You are killing me. Magoo is not accurate enough to be a gunslinger.

  18. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Rod Munch is correct. Jameis no longer feels comfortable even trying to make a play. He feels as though it is “check down Charlie” or “take a sack Charlie” or bust. I like Dirk, but he is done. We need someone in here that allows Jameis to play his best football. It just aint Dirk.

  19. Dapostman Says:

The Saints came out in the second half and just wanted it more. Their DL put more pressure on Winston and their secondary covered better. They played a lot like the Bucs did last week against Carolina. 2 missed FG’s and a blocked punt were the real difference today though. Brees only had 200 yards passing and the Saints weren’t running all over the Bucs. How many of you guys have been saying ‘win the trenches’? Well today the Saints did.

  20. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

    Rod-

Winston threw the ball 38 times only completed 18 passes, I didn’t see Winston throwing the ball away out of bounds so those 20 misses falls on him not being a great quarterback

  21. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

How can any of you pro-Winston folks continue to overlook the fact Jay Miss has been in the same system for 4 years and yet he’s only progressed to where he is. The guy is not a franchise QB, plain and simple.

  22. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

You guys really think Jamies best football is 4 turnovers and 4 touchdowns a game???

If so that’s not a franchise quarterback

  23. DBS Says:

What you got was he did not toss it up in the air on his own 20 or 30 yard line leading to picks and scores.

  24. Bucs 14 Says:

Some of you guys are making the argument that Magoo feels like he has to protect the football, and is being held back from making plays. Do you guys not ever watch his throws? He is inaccurate as all hell. His balls sail high. His deep balls usually are not even in the same zip code.

In reality, Magoo is not that good at the NFL level.

  25. Dumpster Fire Says:

Jamoist Winston is 21-30 as a starter. Do they really want to continue to finance his behavior? Let’s hope not!!!

  26. rrsrq Says:

    @ Rod,

You are so correct, DK got Jameis playing like a game manager. This is why he is leading the team in rushing the last two games, don’t make a mistake has been drilled into his head so much, take the sack – young fella asked to completely change his game.
Poor play calling, no screens, no back shoulder throws, not even using ME in the red zone. This goes back to the game when instead of throwing the ball in the end zone you call some crazy play to try to score.

Nate K should’ve walked with Jay Hayes last year
Mike Smith should’ve went with them
The same stubborn loyalty that got Dungy and Lovie fire, will happen to DK

He’s literally been at the head of the top offense in football this year (and no, Fitz had actually brought them down in the rankings) while having a top 7 scoring offense (and, again, no, Fitz actually brought them down in this ranking), it’s literally the best offense, both scoring and yardage wise in the history of the team, yet Winston stinks, doesn’t get the game. LOL!

You Winston bashers need to get some material based on reality, then you wouldn’t be so boring.

What happened today is what always happens with Dirk. If Dirk gets a lead he plays not to lose, he gets scared, he goes into a shell. I can guarantee you that with a halftime lead Dirk was telling Winston at halftime DO NOT turn the ball over, DO NOT force the ball, just throw it away nothing is there, just eat the sack if nothing is there. That’s what Dirk has been the entire time he has been here.

With that said perhaps that works if we don’t get a blocked punt, perhaps that works if the 2nd FG, which was very makeable, goes through. But coaching scared is what Dirk is all about, and it’s why he’s not head coaching material.

  28. NPRSageBoy Says:

SilverBuc- why don’t you and JayMiss get a room?

  29. AlteredEgo Says:

In Jamyth’s own words..same answer twice…”I’ve got to get the ball out of my hands sooner”…..
    see
All those scrambles….most were because Jamyth still does not..can not SEE the play as it is unfolding (throw on time to the spot)….
Jamyth is waiting until the WR is open and standing still then throws pitch and catch…
Jamyth will never be an elite NFL QB because of those limitations….
    DJax knows this ^^^

  30. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Dirk coached scared. And therefore the team (and Jameis) played scared. When the Bucs had the Saints in a serious hole… light them the “F” up. With their one man deep, light them up. Nope. Dirk has successfully turned Jameis scared of making a play.

  31. Not there yet Says:

What happened to going to the sidelines after each series and talking to you qb coach and head coach? It’s pathetic that no one tried to make adjustments in game. If that’s his take on Winston’s play then why not address it in game. Koetter is a moron, he hasn’t no interaction with his offense during the game. So why sit and watch the defense if your not involved on that side of the ball. Why not try to get your offense in sync? Koetter is trash, we all know Winston is very accurate as a passer when it comes to ball placement but no excuse for not adjusting to your opponent, Winston is inaccurate but according to this article it was half arsed game planning

  32. Troy Says:

Demon, you’re exactly right. Great call. This is why Dirk has to go.

  33. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Munch, we can agree that Koetter has to go. However, you can’t turn Jay Miss loose. When you do that, he throws pic after pic.

  34. Ripcurl57 Says:

Its anyone but Winston’s fault..4 years worth of it….this was jaymiss winston football..same as it ever was..

  35. Ripcurl57 Says:

It’s bad when barber calls jaymiss out about not throwing to open receivers…and taking sacks..

  36. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Thank you, Troy. I wish it wasn’t so. There was a point today that i actually thought we were gonna blow the Saints out. Can u even imagine the statement that would have made? — I think, in spite of liking Dirk, that any number of Coaches could have guided us home today. Not him. — So tired.

  37. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Ripcurl57,, to easy a take, man. Just aint that simple. Jameis was capable of leading this team to victory today. He HAS to be allowed to make a play. Its just that simple.

  38. jay adams Says:

Total team loss, special teams, defense adjustments in 2nd half bad, not enough blockers staying in the 2nd half, way too many overthrows by JW. 10 targets to Godwin and 1 completion-wow.

    Still no running game consistently.

I predicted 6 or 7 wins and sticking with it.

  39. ChipBuc Says:

I’ll say it again as i have said on other posts. Winston can’t consistently win without a running back to help him. It’s unfair to blame him for a sluggish offense, with the awful RBs the Bucs run out there. Every run loses yards or is stuffed at the line of scrimmage. No running game makes it really easy to play defense. Give Winston a good running back and he will improve greatly.

  40. Rayjay1122 Says:

It is very elementary as to what happened today, so don’t over complicate it folks. We were out coached plain and simple. The Saints made adjustments and we’re the better team when it counted.

Winston was good in the first half but the Saints defense looked much better in the second half. Also, our offensive line needs an overhaul. The tackles suck out loud. I can’t hardly stand it when Smith and Dotson are starting.

If you all think Winston is the biggest issue, then I don’t know what else to tell you. Sure, he wasn’t very accurate the whole game and I really do think he has vision issues. He started with the “corrective” visor and wasn’t squinting. I saw no visor in the second half as well as the signature squinting with no bright sun today.

    Koetter has to go.

  41. BrianBucs Says:

Winston looked like he was confused by the coverages he saw, thus making him hold the ball too long and making the O – Line look bad.
However, Dotson had a horrible game

  42. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Go back and look at the film and tell me how many were dropped passes and then we will talk. Enough said.

  43. ATrain Says:

    Excuse after excuse

  44. T REX Says:

Just more excuses from the Winston knob slobberers. Will they ever end?

Time to flush this whole thing.

  45. Grt1 Says:

I guess Jameis got all those holding calls , missed field goals and didn’t protect on the blocked punt. You guys are idiots.

  46. Mike Johnson Says:

  47. tnew Says:

There was so many issues in this game.. Play design is so poor. The all 22 will be very disturbing not sure I can watch this boring scheme again. Without superior talent at every position the Bucs loose with this scheme. Evans was hurting, OJ out, Godwin dropped balls etc. Winston missed some throws, but so did Brees. It happens. Evaluating Winston with this staff is not a great plan. Recent history gives us guys like Tribusky, and Goff, both looked way worse than Winston with old school coaches. The yards are a distraction. Say what you will, the Saints running game WON the game for them. If the Bucs were that effective running the ball, they might have 8 wins.

Jameis started watching the pass rush today, but so would any QB under that pressure with slow developing routes. The offensive line is so, so bad. This is a bad offensive system. Easy to defend, hard to execute. Go look at the papers from when Smith/Koetter were fired in ATL… Very similar.

  48. Anonymous Says:

When the saints were bringing pressure, it was up to the coaches to call quick 3 step passes that negate the pass rush. This is all on coaching

  49. FireMikeSmith_orDie Says:

Jameis should’ve been pulled out of the game in the 4th quarter. That hit at the end of the half got into his head and he was just WAY TOO hesitant the 2nd half. Fitz would’ve busted the offense out of that nasty funk–he couldn’t have been more flat than JW. I’ve said it NUMEROUS times, DK has to understand he’s got two guys he can go with and he has to know when to switch to the hot hand.

DK is abysmal at reading QBs body language, understanding what is happening in a QBs head. JWs head was way out of it today in the 2nd half, and you actually saw signs of it in the 2nd quarter.

Koetter is the real problem here. A real HC would’ve fixed the myriad of senseless penalties and full-scale team-wide breakdown that started happening in the 2nd quarter and just got worse as the game wore on.

  50. tnew Says:

just went back and watched the second half.. wanted to see how bad it truly was: I was surprised.

    First drive,
    Run gain of 5
    Run loss of 1
Winston’s arm hit on release, Dotson beaten, missed FG This was the game. Should’ve immediately went for the TD.

    Second drive, starting inside 15
Winston Run for 3 escaped sacks,
defensive holding, hit Brate in hands and still nearly caught but first down
Overthrows Godwin, who is doubled. Evans is triple covered and no other receiving option as the Bucs are in MAX Protect.. This was a great decision.
Run.. Barber for 6.. manageable 3rd and 4
    Winston runs for first down
    Barber for 2 but… HOLDING 76 SMITH
    now 1st and 20
Winston.. Complete to Evans for 17 yards. 2nd and 3.. Playbook wide open
    DROP Godwin
3rd3.. INC wouldn’t matter if complete as there was a holding on the play..

This is a win… Switches the field except.. Blocked Punt. 14-11 after Saints TD

1st down at 25.. Time to respond
    Blitz.. no one open Sack..
Rodgers run, gain of 5 3rd and 9
Intense jailbreak pressure, good downfield coverage.. Sack
Poor punt at midfield. Saints TD on 4th and goal 14-18

    Now losing, offense must respond
personal foul on return.. first and 10 at 9
    Barber runs for 3
5 out on route, pressure, quickly, personal foul Dotson, declined
    3rd and 6… FALSE START Dotson…3rd and 11 at the 8
Someone is running the wrong route, I think Hump. no way he and Godwin are supposed to be in this same pattern. The throw is high and behind for Hump but absolutely perfect to Godwin, if Hump doesn’t deflect. Ronde initially called out Winston but changed after seeing the replay.

    Not making stuff up.

TD Saints.. 25-14… So far Winston hasn’t missed a throw, really in the second half, and the team has given up a 14-3 lead. I honestly thought he had played WAY worse than this. Mike Clayton was saying he played ok, and I was way more critical, but I was wrong. The offensive line was dominated and there was zero adjustment.

7 minutes left, first and 10 at 25. MUST play
    5 yd pass to Rodgers
big gain to Evans, first down at 42

    Hit on release, incomplete
intense pressure, high on pass to Humphries, hits both hands, but not catchable IMO, really tough play.
Sack, Ronde made a big point on this to call out Godwin was open.. true, but bracketed. Would have been 4 yards short of first down. Winston nearly spun out. So this was a questionable decision no doubt, but the end result. Would’ve still been 4th down. Should’ve thrown it. This was his worst play of the game.

Saints FG… gets inside 2 minute warning

Game is over at this point.. I don’t count all of the underneath throws as good or the INT at the end as bad

Go back and watch it. I was shocked. Facts are Saints started grinding the ball. Scored on every possession after the Brees fumble.

The O Line lost this game. No way to argue any thing but.

  51. lambchop Says:

This looked like an over confident team coming out of the half. They thought they would win just by showing up. Total night and day halves. Too many penalties, too many lazy and unskilled OL, too many dropped passes, too little of a running game, disastrous special teams. This team imploded all around. You can’t blame Jameis for this one alone. With that OL, how would he have done anything? I’m a huge Jameis basher but this was a total melt down.
